Lompoc 4-H Vaulters Host German ChampsThe Lompoc 4-H Vaulting Team was

very fortunate in being able to host thevaulters from Neuss-Grimlinghausen, WestGermany.

When we first found out about the Germanteam coming for a visit, we had a little overfifty dollars in our savings account. Thanks tocar washes, bake sales, saving aluminumcans, plus a very generous donation from the"Knights of Pythias" and other organiza-tions, we were soon planning a full calendarof fun things for us all to do when our guestsarrived.

Money was only a small portion of thework involved. We made another vaultingring for our guests along with borrowing ex-

tra barrels, rebuilding the corral and pickingup a horse for them to vault on.

We were at the Greyhound Station in San-ta Maria to meet them. After getting themsettled in their appointed homes, they startedtheir three week visit in Lompoc. It alsostarted the physical workout in preparationfor the International Vaulting Fest inHollister. Our workouts were in the morningsfrom 8-12. After practice, everyone would dovarious group activities such as shopping in

Solvang, visiting La Purisima Mission, goingto the Santa Barbara Fiesta Rodeo, having aslumber party and many other things. Theactivity that they all seemed to enjoy the

most, however, was the trip to Disneyland. They had never seen anything like it.

Fest finally rolled around and a girl fromthe German team took fourth in the Int' -tional Kur Routine, but their good fortun, .unot stop there. The entire team provedthemselves and placed first in both Interna-tional Compulsories and Kur. Everybodyfrom both teams was ecstatic.

It was a rewarding experience just havingthem here, a special "once in a lifetime". Weall became very close, and when it came timefor them to leave their wasn't one dry eye.Right now our team is earning money so thatwe can visit them in Germany next year.

Rainbow Vaulters Thanksgiving Competition

The competition was held November 18at Fox Den Farms in North County of SanDiego. Marcia Sullivan judged the regularclasses and Cheryl Davidson judged the3-phaze. Matthew and Lili Bossenmeyeracted as show managers.

"Two months before the competition,"states Lili, "we called all of the interestedteams and discovered that only one would beable to compete as an 8 member team, butseveral could if we had 4 member teams in-stead. Most wanted 3-phase classes, but hadonly one or two people that were going tocompete in it, so we had individual and pairs3-phase. The pairs class worked out nicelyfor us because the vaulters would worktogether at each others homes, on their own, without much help from Matt and me. For

beginning groups, we had individual com-pulsories on the barrel, team compulsorieson the barrel, and team kur on the barrel. This team kur wasn't a 3-phase kur, but ex-actly the same as what is done on the horse. We felt that this class would help the beginn-ing teams to get their timing and team workperfected before they try to perform it on thehorse. Also, watching our barrel teams workgave us some good ideas for new kur exer-cises that we could do on the horse.

We gave ribbons to first, and fancy cer-tificates out to sixth. These only cost usabout 25 cents a piece to make. A gold sealwas placed in the corner of each certificate, with a small piece of ribbon in the correct col-or for the placing, A rainbow went across thetop, and a space was left in the middle where

VAULTERS LOVE A PARADE !

It has been said that Americans love asde. Well, if this is true, then it is doubly

true for Vaulters! Many towns and com-munities have a parade for any occasion. These local parades are a perfect way forvaulting to be shown to the public. Vaultingis colorful, flashy, exciting, and the crowdloves it, not to mention the vaulters and theirparents.

This year, the Timberline Vaulters par-ticipated in two local parades. We foundthese parades to be fun, exciting, and pro-fitable. We would like to share some tips andideas on how to efficiently and effectivelymarch in these events.

1. When you get the entry blank for theparade and you wish to be judged, {the thrillof competition does wonders for pointed toesand straight legs!) enter your teams in"Mounted Groups," You will want to be inthe horse section and this class is the onebest suited for vaulting.

2. Arrive at the line-up area at least onehour before starting time. This is a long timeto keep little ones clean and neat, but it isgood to allow extra time for fixing britchesand bows.

3. Use stage make-up (lip stick, rouge, eyeshadow and mascara) on all the girls. Itmade the parade seem more festive and itlooks good to the audience.

4. Line your vaulters up big-Httle-big-little.This way, you have a flyer-base line-up,which is perfect for kurs.

5. Have one competant vaulter lead thehorse and have the coach march alongbeside the surcingle to leg-up vaulters. It isthe coach's decisions that keep the kurs safeand in this position. She / he can observethe exercises, closely sporting the vaulters toprevent injury.

6. Leg the vaulters up in the big-littlefashion, beginning with two. Have them dosimple, safe doubles. It doesn't take difficulttriples to impress a crowd. Some of the mostpopular kurs were Supported Handstand,Flying Angel, Double Decker, and Flag onQuadruped. Have the vaulters hold the kursno less than eight counts so that the crowdcan get a good look. Then, after the kur isfinished, have the vaulter seated in front do asimple dismount to the outside to avoid in-terference with the next vaulter getting onand leg the next vaulter up in back. They do adouble, and the one in front gets off, etc.. In

this way, all vaulters participate equally, anyou have a smoothly working assembly-linof vaulters continuously performing theikurs. This routine works out especially wewith young or inexperience vaulters who arunfamiliar with kur work. "A" or "B" teammay wish to perform their competitive kiroutines. However, the pavement and noiscrowds are important factors to take into a<count.

7. Be sure to have at least one lar<:vaulter on the off side to spot and to catch litie ones as they dismount.

8. Line your horses up Indian Style, heeto tale, with adequate spacing for tlvaulters to line up directly behind their horsif more than one horse is used. It is nicalthough extremely difficult, to co-ordinathe vaulters' routines to be identical aisimultaneously performed on all horses. Vfound, however, that this was too mutwork, so our two horses and one barrel intruck had different kurs being performed.

Parades are a great way for vaultersshow off their beautiful work. We hope to iin many more parades in the coming yeaand hope to see more vaulting teams jointhere!

Every year, every team and every vaulteris faced with the choice of continuing withour sport or moving on to other things. If allthings are considered, vaulting is a ratherunimportant frill that most of us got intowithout ever really thinking about what wewould do with these vaulting skills once we'veacquired them. You can't go onto collegeand major in P.E. with a minor in vaulting. You can't start in local fun meets and workup to Olympic level competition. You can'teven explain to Grandma why you vault andgive her a sound reason why this is good foryou. In terms of dollars and cents, it is not acheap sport, although compared to otherequine sports, is is by far the least expensive. You won't even get a moment of nationalrecognition if you win a Fest, something eventhe Guiness Record Holders are used to get-ting (for more flippent achievements, like themost consecutive frogs kissed by an eighthgrader!)

Like most "new" organizations, we've hadto evolve our own system of competition, judging, achievement levels and goals. And,like most new groups, we've bungled along, stomping on each other and searching forrecognition and identity. We seem to be at across roads, or even as point of no riand not one can really guess what the nextten years will do for vaulting's search for animage and a foothold in the door of recogniz-ed legitimate sport! The rapid rise inpopularity of such sports as Soccer and Gym-nastics can be attributed in a large way to thepublic image projected by individual stars inthose sports. Vaulting offers both the graceand beauty of Gymnastics and the excite-ment of Soccer, with the added undeniablemystique of the horse. We have all theelements needed to be a vastly popular spec-tator sport, for like the two above mentionedsports, and ice skating too, you need knownothing about the rules of the game to enjoythe show. So what is missing and what canwe do to see vaulting gain the audience itdeserves?

Somehow, we must capture the imagina-tion of the American public by exposing themto vaulting as often as possible, and next, weneed to produce and promote our own"superstars" so that someday Pele, OlgaKorbut, Bruce Jenner and Dorothy Hamiliare no more recognized than Brian Post,Sydney Stang, and Brad Wells. I feel that itis every vaulters' duty to try to promote an ex-citing public image, and enhance the publicawareness whenever possible.

IDENTITY CRISIS - continued

•The 1980's should be the decade we in-vade! If we all make an effort toward public

Bareness, we are well on our way to getmore than just our pointed toes in the door. It's time to' re-examine your own club's ac-tivities and make promotion of the sport justas much a priority as Fest. In the end, nomatter how good or bad you are as a vaulteror a club, the future of our sport rests in theactions of today. None of us can afford toleave promotion to someone else, or wait forAVA to bring us out of the closet. We areAVA, every one of us, and it's time we giveGranny something to brag about at herbridge club that every one can identify with!If you have ideas on how to make this sportmore recognized, share them! If you are notasked to demonstrate vaulting, volunteer. Ifthe newspaper doesn't come to you for Festresults, go to them and if all else fails, put onyour own Media Event and let the localnewspapers and TV stations know you'rethere. You'll be please to find what a goodSunday Section vaulting makes. It looksgreat on TV'too. I want to see vaulting growlike it never has before, but we will only growwhen we start getting the recognition and ap-preciation that this unique sport deserves.Use your imagination and sell vaulting toyour friends and community. Then theOlympics will not be simply a dream, but a

^ goal for future vaulters.

A used vaulting surcingle was given tobe used for work with handicapped children.Connie Vance, one of the instructors whoworks with the children, writes as follows:The Handicapped Program is considering thepurchase of a second surcingle. We have hada tremendously positive reaction to the oneyou gave us. One parent told me that herson's doctor said that there was such im-provement since Brian started riding thatsurgery had been postponed indefinitely. Anytime we can save someone from months in abody cast...! Also, the mother told us thatSPECIFICALLY the major improvement hadcome since Brian had been able to use thesurcingle and the doctor urged the use of itfor Brian whenever possible.

I have worked with Brian whenever he hasused the surcingle and can vouch for the factthat physically and psychologically, he is"king of the hill" when he has the surcingle. Iam enclosing a picture of Brian doing a "roll-off." Turn the picture upside down and seehis grin. Quite a thrill for someone in awalker!
