NEW OWL TO FLY INTO COMPSTALL
INSIDE : CHURCH APPEAL • RECIPE

THE COMPSTALL COMMUNITY COUNCIL
SAY: This is the first glimpse of our brand
new owl, which will be unveiled at a
ceremony in late September (check the
website for the date, which will be finalised
soon). Currently Oscar, as he has been
named, is residing at a local farm, but will
soon be in pride of place on the village green
outside the Post Office.
Oscar was designed and carved with a
chainsaw by an accomplished local artist
called Andrew Frost. Once in place, Oscar
will be able to be enjoyed by all and will also
be far more visible than the previous owl. As
such he will become the symbol of the village
and the country park, which is an important
haven for not only owls, but a huge variety of
important species of animals, birds, insects,
plants and fungi.
BRAND NEW WEBSITE
www.compstall.weebly.com
The Compstall Community Council have set
up a new website, which will be used for the
benefit of the village and its inhabitants. We
will post minutes of all the meetings, public
notices and news items amongst other things.
If you have any items of local interest that you
would like to post there, get in touch with
Richard Britton on [email protected]
ST PAUL'S CHURCH CHANCEL APPEAL & FUNDRAISING REV LYNN SAYS: As you will be well aware, our lovely parish church of St Paul‟s is on a hill and, after so many years of gradual movement, unfortunately the foundations of our chancel are just not holding up, literally, and we must face the fact that urgent, extensive work will have to be carried out in the forthcoming months. At this moment in time we do not have the fine details. We are awaiting the full report of the quantity surveyor and then we can begin to find out the exact building costs and apply for an initial grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. It does look as though it will be in the region of £240,000. To see the extent of the work and the probable costing all laid out in black and white is a little daunting and we must prepare ourselves for a challenging time ahead, which will last well into 2016 and probably beyond, but we do so with the eyes and heart of faith. We don‟t know yet what match funding we may have to find, but we have faith that all will be well, and that the restoration work will all be successfully completed. In the meantime we will continue to fund raise through a variety of events including: A harvest themed afternoon tea with a bring and buy and raffle on 3rd October beginning at 2pm. This will be followed by our Harvest Festival on Sunday 4th at 10.45am. On the evening of 14th November we will once again be holding a concert of the
Marple and Hawk Green Bands in church at 7.30pm. And on 21st November we will be holding our Autumn / Christmas Fair in the Parish Hall from 10.30am onwards. We hope you will be able to support us and your parish church in these events as we try to accumulate funds and to support our bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Of course you are always welcome at our weekly services which take place at 9.30am and 10.45am each Sunday. The later service also includes children‟s groups which provide enjoyable practical activities for children of all ages. God Bless Reverend Lynn Vicar
RESERVOIR
POLLUTION
COUNTRYSIDE OFFICER
JOHN ROWLAND SAYS :
The surface water drains
around Compstall village all
discharge into the reservoir in
Etherow Country Park. This is
permissible and United Utilities
are adamant that there are no
foul water connections into
these surface water drains.
However a perennial problems
has arisen.
Pollutants are entering the reservoir through these surface water drains and this occurs when people put substances (paint, emulsion, oil etc) down their grids/sinks
as this invariably ends up in the reservoir at Etherow. Anything you pour down your waste water grids ends up in the reservoir, polluting the water-way with potential implications to the health and welfare of the duck and fish populations.
PLEASE REMEMBER :-
Think before you pour any waste down your drains.
Do not pollute the reservoir.
Dispose of your potentially hazardous waste in a safe manner at a registered tip site.
Look after your environment.
The Green Space Team is currently looking into the possibility of clearing out the feeder canal part of the reservoir and we are getting prices for this work, which includes the removal and relocation of the silt which has built up over many years and is now choking this small backwater of the feeder canal. There is currently no funding available for this work but we will be looking to secure the funds necessary to resolve the problem. With thanks, John.

LOCAL MP
MAKES A
SPLASH!
OUR LOCAL MP WILLIAM
WRAGG (pictured above, left,
with Marple North councillor
Annette Finnie, right) took part
in the annual boat race at
Etherow Park. He and his
team raced for Beechwood
Cancer Centre. Although they
came nowhere near winning,
William said, "It's great to
support local events such as
this and get behind them as
the new MP. I plan on
attending as many events as
possible and raise as much
money for local charities as
possible". William has
pledged to enter the boat 'Mrs
T' next year.

COMPSTALL
HISTORICAL
SOCIETY
UPDATE
HILDA HEALD SAYS:
Compstall History Society has
been in existence now for
three years. In that that time
we have staged two history
fairs with the help of Marple
Historical Society, This year‟s
fair celebrated the bi-
centenary of the arrival of
George Andrews into the area
and the founding of the village.
The extensive photographic
exhibition mounted by our
chairman Roy Westall was
repeated at the „Well
Dressing‟. Members of the
Historical Society have also
carried out conducted history
walks of the country park
which have been well
received.
We also have a Memories
Group which has been running
now for nearly two years. It
meets on the first Monday of
the month at 2.30pm in the
Sailing Club in the park. We
are grateful to the Sailing Club
for their continuing support
and hospitality.
Originally set up to record an
oral history of the village, we
have recently enjoyed some
very interesting talks from
local historians Anne Hearle,
Judith Wilshaw, and Pamela
Davenport who gave us a
perspective on women‟s
changing roles in the wars.
There was also an interesting
tour of St. Paul‟s by Mike
Mawby, and there is always
an opportunity for a cup of tea,
cake and a chat afterwards.
All are welcome and our next
meeting is on the 7th
September when our speaker
will be Derek Davidson, his
topic is “The Magic of the
Music Hall”. We Hope to see
you there.

CALLING ALL BUDDING WRITERS,
ARTISTS, PHOTOGRAPHERS &
REPORTERS!
RICHARD BRITTON SAYS:
We are hoping to publish this eight-page
Newsletter on a regular basis - maybe quarterly
(four times a year). However, to make it
worthwhile, interesting and feasible, we need
contributions from a variety of people in the
village - not only adults but children and
teenagers too! Can you help ?
You might be great with a camera or a paintbrush
and have produced some great pictures of the
local wildlife that you would love to share. You
might be a poet who has been inspired by the
stunning scenery in the park. Or you might want
to report on events held in the village, or even
write about its history. On the other hand, you
might have some completely different ideas for
articles and content for this Newsletter. Whatever
your interest, we need your help and would love
to hear from you! So, if you think you have a
contribution to make, or even an idea, then
please email me at [email protected]
LOCAL BUSINESSES For a small fee your business could be advertised
in this Newsletter, which reaches every home in
Compstall. Your fee would be used to fund local
schemes for the benefit of the village and country
park. Email [email protected] for details.
COMPSTALL CALENDAR 2016
Before you go and spend your money on One
Direction, Hollyoaks or Cliff Richard calendars -
don't forget that Compstall has its very own
calendar and it will be available very soon!
It may not include pictures of hunky firemen or
scantily clad ladies, but it will feature some
beautiful photography of the village and park by
local people. Not only would it make a great
addition to any kitchen wall, but it would also be a
perfect Christmas present to send to someone
who has moved away from the area and feels
homesick or nostalgic. Keep an eye on our
website www.compstall.weebly.com and the
village notice-board for the date of publication,
which is soon. It will be available at the Post
Office to purchase.
Secret Recipe
Secret Recipe No. 1
Do you have a tasty, well-guarded
recipe that has been handed down
from generation to generation? Or
have you been experimenting and
discovered a delicious combination of
ingredients? If so, we want to hear from you!
This column is to feature a tried and tested recipe
from people in the village that is so good that
whilst it should be secret, you've just got to share
it! Why not cut out and keep for future reference?
1. COURGETTE PASTA
Serves: 4
You will need: 4 medium/large courgettes; A
tablespoon of olive oil; A teaspoon of balsamic
vinegar; salt and pepper.
What to do: 1. Boil a pan of water. 2. Using a
potato peeler, shave each courgette into strips.
3. Heat the olive oil in a wok. 4. Place strips into
boiling water for about three minutes and then
strain fully in a colander. 5. Fry the courgette
strips in three or four batches, to taste. 6. Enjoy
the courgette strips as a low carbohydrate
alternative to pasta with your favourite sauce.
DID YOU KNOW ? THE ATHENAEUM
Photo: Roy Westall.
In this section, each issue we will explore a
feature of the village and country park.
Have you ever wondered why the Athenaeum
was named so? Well, it is the Latinized version of
the Greek word "Athenaion" - the temple of the
goddess Athene in ancient Athens, at which
famous philosophers would come to teach and
poets and actors would also rehearse and
perform. The Romans used the term to denote a
place where teaching and learning might take
place. By the late eighteenth century in England,
the word "athenaeum" was used to mean a
"literary club", "reading room" or place to store
newspapers and books.
The Athenaeum in Compstall was built at the
orders of George Andrew the younger, for the
education and physical recreation of his mill
workers. It contained a library, a gym and a stage
for the recital of concerts and performances. The
basement became St Paul's National School until
1963, and in 1965 the building was used as
offices by the then local authority Cheshire
County Council. From 1973 until as late as 1997
it was used as a public library. Now it houses a
nursery and a boxing club, so it arguably
continues to improve mind and body in the spirit
of George Andrew the younger's original
objectives!
Do you know any interesting facts or stories
relating to places in the village? If so, we would
love to hear from you!
KNITTING FOR THE CHRISTIE
THE KNITTING GROUP SAY:
The knitting group is one of the groups in Compstall that are working together to raise money for Christie Hospital. It has been meeting now for nearly three years. We normally meet on a Monday evening 6.30 to 8.30 pm at one of the „Nitwits‟ homes and knit and chat and plan our projects.
We normally have two stalls a year in Christies foyer at Xmas and Easter where we sell our goods, and the „Bobby Moore‟ unit at Stepping Hill Hospital also has a little stall at the same times selling our wares. So far we have raised in the knitting group £1500. The knitting ladies also sell the cakes so generously made by so many people in Compstall at two other occasions at the Christie and the cake stalls have also made £1500.
This Christmas, because of refurbishment to the foyer at The Christie, we will hold our stall at Marple Bridge Winter Wonderland on the 5th of December, so please come along and meet us and support our stall.
Thank you Compstall for all your generosity in the past.
REPORTING PROBLEMS
The Compstall Community Council is here for
you if you have any local issues you would
like help with resolving. If you need us,
please contact us and we will do our best to
help you. The current Chair is Mike Mawby,
and he, or indeed any other members of the
executive, are available to be contacted (see
page 2 for contact details).
However, it is also worth noting that Stockport
Borough Council have an excellent online
system for reporting a number of
problems, including antisocial behaviour,
disputes with neighbours, dog fouling, illegal
rubbish tipping, noise pollution, water and
sewerage leaks, uncollected trash and many,
many more. This service is called Report It.
As well as reporting problems to the
Community Council, it is also advised that
you contact Stockport Borough Council by
reporting any issues on their online system,
which typically is the most effective way of
doing so. If an issue affects or disrupts not
only you, but other neighbours too, then it is a
good idea that you all separately report the
problem as this will make the Borough
Council more likely to take notice. Of course,
if you have any trouble using the online
system, then please get in touch with us and
we can help you. Or, if you have limited
access to the internet, or if you are really not
confident using it, you could phone the
Borough Council and report it to one of their
advisors. The Stockport Council website also
has "Browsaloud" for those with sight
impediments, so they can navigate it by
hearing descriptions of links.
If you find you are not getting anywhere by
reporting your problem through this channel,
then it is worth getting in touch with your
councillors. The local councillors responsible
for Compstall are Cllrs Geoff Abell, Martin
Candler and Annette Finnie. If you feel your
issue has much wider or deeper implications,
then you might find it appropriate to contact
our local MP for Hazel Grove, who is William
Wragg, or even your local MEPs.
The main thing though is to make sure you
report your issue and get it logged, and if no
action is taken, then contact them again and
again until it is. Be persistent!
Our new website contains a load of useful
web links and details of how to contact
people. Why not have a look at
www.compstall.weebly.com ?

SECURITY & THEFT
We are lucky that we
live in a pleasant semi-
rural community, where
theft and burglary is
rare. However, this
does not mean it is
nonexistent. Unfortunately there is the odd
occurrence of theft and burglary in the area.
It is better to be safe than sorry, so always
keep your doors locked, even when you are
home during the daytime. Never pop to a
neighbour for a coffee or nip to the shop
without shutting and locking your door first -
you never know who might be watching.
Keep any garages and sheds that may
contain valuable equipment or machinery
shut and locked when unattended. Always
keep bikes locked securely, even if you are
only leaving them for a moment or two.
If you do see anything suspicious, report it to
the Police straight away by calling the non-
emergency number 101.
If you see a serious crime being committed,
then phone emergency services on 999.
