HEADLINES
Last week I had the opportunity to listen to some great educational speakers,
including Professor Deborah Eyre, Priya Lakhani, OBE and Dr Nihara Krause.
Whilst all of their specialist areas are very different there was an overriding
theme regarding attitudes towards learning. The power of growth mindset, in its
truest sense, enabling children to readily take up challenge or opportunity rang
true, as this is the way we support children’s learning at Rose Hill.
With this in mind, it is terrific that our Year 6 girls have taken part in Roedean’s
STEM Festival where they explored chemistry, computing and more. Thank you
Roedean for hosting this wonderfully engaging event.
Next week we celebrate our own STEAM Week. I look forward to reporting back
on the many events we have lined up for our pupils. Thank you in advance to all the pupils and staff for
embracing this event, especially Mr Mansfield and Mr Izzard for your energy and expertise.
This morning we have held our first Open Morning of the academic year and it has been our busiest to
date with thirty families registering to visit. Thank you to the PA parents who volunteered to meet with pro-
spective parents and to our wonderful Year 6 tour guides. We are holding our first Coffee Connections of
the term next Friday straight after drop off. This is an informal event for parents to come together, I look
forward to seeing many of you there.
And finally, well done to the U10 Boys’ Football team for their stunning victory last Saturday winning the
annual 5-a-side tournament at St Michael’s, read more about it later in the newsletter.
Best wishes.

SHOEBOX APPEAL
CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Rufus who took 1st place at Saturdays race at the Indoor Lowland Championship in
the Netherlands beating the next fastest u10 boy from Belgium by over 1.5 seconds. Ben took 6th place in
the u12 category, and was 3rd fastest GB boy.
Congratulations to Julian who completed the Kent Golf Approved
Junior Academy 2019.
Congratulations to the following children who have completed the
following Nessy objectives:
Max M 30 objectives
Ameer TA 20 objectives
At this time last year we collected items to fill 344 shoeboxes, for the Satellite Rotary Club of Southborough and
Pembury, which were then sent to Eastern Europe. They were much appreciated by children and families last
Christmas.
This year the School Council would like to support this initiative again. Over the next few weeks Rotarians are run-
ning their ‘Shoebox Appeal’ and have asked Rose Hill School if we could collect non-food items, small enough to
fit into a shoebox, to send to children in Romania, whose only Christmas gift will be the items in the shoebox. Fur-
ther information can be found at http://www.rotaryshoebox.org/ .
There are 3 categories for the shoeboxes:
• Children from 0 to 7 years old
• Children from 8 to 11 years old
• Teenagers
There will be a female shoebox and male shoebox for each category and the items that are acceptable to send
can include:
Toothpaste, shower gel, shampoo
Stationery, small books, notepads
Toys, games (nothing that needs a battery)
Gloves, scarves, hats, combs, mirrors
Soaps, sponges, flannels, hair decorations
Teenage items cosmetics, stationery, games
Items should be new or of good quality, remembering that the recipient will be opening the box in eager antici-
pation and, especially with toys for the children, quite possibly the first real gifts they have received for a very
long time.
We hope you will kindly support this Shoebox Appeal and bring in your donations to your child’s class teacher by
Friday 18 October. We will then pass them on to Mr Cornish and members of Rotary Club for collection and
packing into special boxes. (DO NOT prepare your own shoebox as all donations will be sorted appropriately at
the depot).
Thank you for your co-operation.

ROEDEAN STEM FESTIVAL
Tuesday saw all Y6 girls head to the coast to attend Roedean School
STEM Festival along with nearly 150 other girls from across the South and
London. The girls had four sessions across the school: Science – making
rocket fuel, Technology – improving an air powered car, Engineering –
making the tallest tower from spaghetti and marshmallows, Maths – un-
derstanding binary and codes (and really bad maths jokes!). The day
ended with an inspirational talk from Dr Suzie Imber about her quest to
become an astronaut.
Y7 TRIP TO BATTLE ABBEY
Y7 had a great trip to Battle Abbey last Friday. We were met outside the abbey by Brother James, dressed
as a Benedictine monk, who gave us a tour of the abbey grounds and Battle Abbey school. We met up
with our former pupils, Dylan Horton and Finly Lloyd, who
joined us for drinks and donuts. We then went on a tour of
the battlefield and visited the exhibition centre. We watched
an informative film on the Battle of Hastings and spent the
last part of the trip visiting the Gatehouse museum.

Excited pupils in Year 6 and 7 made their way to the West End on Thursday, 26 September. Pupils and staff
alike were left speechless by the incredible staging, costumes and talented performances. Those familiar
with the production could not resist singing along to songs such as ‘Defying Gravity’ and ‘Popular’ whilst
newcomers vowed to download the soundtrack as soon as they got home. It turned out to be a rather
special night for the musical as they celebrated 14 years in the West End with balloons galore filling the
aisles and stage at the end of the show.

The Flu Immunisation Programme helps protect children against flu which can be a
very unpleasant illness in children which may lead to serious complications like
bronchitis and pneumonia.
The Kent Immunisation Team will be visiting the school on Monday 2nd December
2019 to deliver the Flu vaccine to all those pupils in Years Reception- Year 6 inclu-
sive.
The vaccine is administered in the form of a nasal spray which is a quick and pain-
less process.
Serious side effects are uncommon but many children can develop a runny or blocked nose, headache,
some tiredness or loss of appetite that lasts a short period.
Invitation Letters along with information leaflets and consent forms will be emailed out to all parents of
those year groups in November with clear instructions on how to complete electronically and return to the
Immunisation Team.
Due to the large number of schools, our vaccination session is scheduled slightly later in the term. If you are
concerned about this because your child is more at risk from flu because of an underlying health condi-
tion, please contact the Kent & Medway Immunisation Healthcare Team directly on Tel: 0300 123 5205.
CODA SUNDAY 6 OCTOBER
Autumn Term 2019, issue 5
Rose Hill Under 10 team won the annual 5-a-side
tournament at St Michael’s on Saturday with an ex-
tra-time “Golden Goal”. This was a deserved reward
for going through the tournament unbeaten, aided
by the team’s spirit, determination and non-stop ef-
fort, even when being a goal behind in some
matches. A truly tremendous overall performance.
