Autumn’s Colors On view September 10–November 20

From the vibrant beauty of goldenrod, native asters, and grasses in our Meadow Garden, to colorful foliage painting our landscape, to the enjoyment children experience in our Garden Railway and Pumpkin Playground, Autumn’s Colors is one of our liveliest seasons.

It’s the one time of year where you can explore one of our most horticulturally challenging displays, Chrysanthemum Festival—which showcases more exquisitely trained mums than ever before.

As night falls, experience the wonder of our Gardens through the magic of Nightscape, running through October 29. Also after dark, our popular Night of 1,000 Lights event returns for a back- to-back, two-weekend celebration.

Highlights from Our Gardens The Art of Grafting Chrysanthemums

(1) Year-round our gardeners work to prepare our most horticulturally demanding seasonal display–Chrysanthemum Festival. In 2008, our Horticulture Technical Specialist Yoko Arakawa, travelled to Japan to learn the art of grafting chrysanthemums which has been practiced for centuries. Our horticulturists perform this delicate art, using cleft graphs, to create several different chrysanthemum forms including our 100 cultivar grafted dome chrysanthemum, pagoda forms, and gnome tree forms. Our gardeners skillfully cut the base plant branch stems and split them lengthwise. A small stem-piece from a different chrysanthemum plant is inserted tightly into the split so it will fuse together. The graft is wrapped in paraffin tape and kept cool and moist so the stems will knit together. The art of the gardener is to balance where each graft is added to form a harmonious whole. Our 100 cultivar grafted dome chrysanthemum is created with more than 120 different cultivars, each differing in form and color, grafted onto one chrysanthemum stem. Chinese pagoda forms and gnome tree forms are grown using specific chrysanthemum cultivars grafted onto Artemisia base plants. Be sure to see these exquisite plants on view during this year’s Chrysanthemum Festival, on view October 22–November 20.

Maple Bonsai On View This Year

After two years of training by our Gardeners, a small display of maple bonsai trees will make their debut this year inside our Conservatory as part of our Chrysanthemum Festival. The art of growing these maple bonsai trees allows us to showcase another unique Japanese growing and cultural tradition. It was our goal to elevate the bonsai

growing technique on a larger scaled tree. Our team of horticulture experts grew, pruned, and trained these maples in containers at our Nursery with the help of our dedicated bonsai volunteers.Throughout the display the leaves on the maple bonsai are expected to be beautiful golds and oranges.

Practicing Retrenchment Pruning

(2) One of the many responsibilities of our arborists in their role in caring for our more than 7,500 trees throughout our Gardens is to manage the aging process of our mature trees. When the tips of the branches of a mature mossy-cup oak (Quercus macrocarpa var. oliviformis) in Oak Knoll, began dying back several years ago in a natural process called senescence, our arborists had to decide how they were going to maintain the tree as the deadwood could create a potentially hazardous condition. In response, our arborists implemented a practice that has rarely been used in our Gardens known as retrenchment pruning. Retrenchment pruning is commonly practiced in the United Kingdom, and is a practice of pruning that reduces the overall spread of the crown by cutting dead or dying limbs back to live growth. Retrenchment pruning minimizes the likelihood of failure by decreasing the length and weight of branches. Shorter, lighter branches are better able to tolerate forces created by wind, snow, and ice. Our arborists’ goal through implementing this new pruning technique is to first and foremost take every safety measure to keep our Gardens safe, and to help our trees age gracefully. Another reason we want to prolong the life of our mature trees is that large trees provide valuable habitat to insects, birds and other wildlife in all their life cycles, and its large root system filters rainwater, stabilizes banks, and prevents erosion.

Longwood Seasons: Fruit House Ale

(3) Enjoy a real taste of Longwood Gardens in our new autumn signature brew, Longwood Seasons: Fruit House Ale. Guests can enjoy the new brew starting in early September. Our Beer Garden is open now through October 29, Wednesday–Saturday evenings, with a Nightscape ticket or Member reservation. Fruit House Ale is a marriage of the traditional wheat beers from Leipzig and the fruits of Longwood Gardens. Throughout the summer, our Gardeners harvested three varieties of peaches from our Idea Garden and seven varieties of nectarines from our Estate Fruit House to use in the brew. A total of 135lbs of harvested fruits were pureed at peak ripeness by our Longwood Gardens chefs. Then, the processed fruit product was delivered to the expert brew masters at Victory Brewing Company to use in the brew. Pouring a hazy orange color with a fruity aroma of peaches and nectarines, this brew provides a fun way to quench your thirst with its tartness and fruit flavor.

Expanded Parking: Coming Soon!

You may have noticed construction occurring near the entrance of our Gardens on Route 1. For the convenience and overall experience of our guests, we have created an area of overflow parking for peak attendance days. The new parking lot will provide 1,173 additional paved spaces for our visitors and will be open for this year’s A Longwood Christmas. Shuttles and bus shelters will be available for visitors parked in the lot. Much like other areas of our Gardens, sustainability, water conservation, and natural lands’ protection is a priority. Native tree, shrub, wildflower and grass species, such as serviceberry, red maple, river birch, red oak, silky dogwood, Indian grass, little bluestem, goldenrods and asters will be planted to provide natural habitat for native insects, and shade to the parking lot. Our horticulturists and Natural Land experts’ selections of vegetation and perennial plantings is designed to help build a natural ecosystem reminiscent of our Meadow Garden.
