When it was launched in 2004, the Cadillac SRX was considered by the industry as a truck and a luxury SUV, even winning several awards as such. Three years into its second generation – a re-styling is in order for 2013 — the 2012 SRX is designated by the EPA as a sport utility vehicle, however Cadillac considers Escalade its lone luxury ute, and lists SRX as its only crossover.

Many believe the initials SRX stand for “Sport-Cross Over” or “S-series Recon-figurable Crossover”, but Cadillac (GM) is mum on the subject, preferring to just keep it in the family of marketable groups of initials it has been successful with.

Upgraded with more power

As the top-selling vehi-cle in the Cadillac line, the 2012 SRX gets upgraded with more power as the for-mer standard 265-hp, 3.0-liter V-6 engine has been replaced by a new, lighter, tweaked 3.6-liter V-6 that adds 42 horses to the par-ty. Built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico the ’12 SRX has also added suspension tuning, a heated steering wheel, stan-dard Bluetooth connectivity, a new 20-inch machined-face wheel finish, interior door lock switches added to the driver and passenger door panels and a slight in-crease in curb weight.

Bold architectureThe SRX comes boldly

at you with aggressive and confident sculpture work, multi-piece shield grille and signature vertical head-lamps, a wide stance, mini-mal overhangs and wheels pushed to the corners. SRX utilizes light pipe technol-ogy and adaptive forward lighting technology that turns the lamps in the di-rection of the front wheels. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard on the Base and Luxury trims and 20-inch wheels are standard on Per-formance and Premium trims.

Measuring 190.3 inches long, 75.2 inches wide and 65.7 inches high on a 110.5-inch wheelbase, SRX has a minimum ground clearance of 7 inches. And with 57 per-cent of its weight up front, SRX comes in with a curb-weight of 4442 lbs in AWD configuration.

Standard exterior features on the tested Luxury trim include high-intensity dis-charge Halogen headlamps with windshield wiper-acti-vated Twilight Sentinel fea-ture, power liftgate, heated and power-adjustable out-side mirrors with power-folding and driver-side auto dimming and Rainsense au-tomatic windshield wipers.

Effortless accelerationSRX is formidable on the

road with its new 3.6-li-ter direct-injected V-6 with continuously variable valve timing and SAE-cer-tified 308 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a 6T70 Hydra-Matic six-speed transverse, electroni-cally controlled, automatic overdrive transmission.

The system provides en-ergetic acceleration in all ranges, entertains with a

throaty engine growl and re-acts effortlessly when called upon. On the track, SRX sprinted well for the class with a zero-to-60 run of 7.5 seconds and a quarter-mile jaunt in 15.8.

For a two-tonner, SRX handles amiably with only a bit of top wobble dur-ing quick maneuvers. With minimal body lean, it han-dles more carlike than trucklike, but with a truck’s demeanor. The SRX has a four-wheel independent suspension system, real-time damping, power-as-sisted rack-and-pinion hy-draulic steering system, all speed traction control us-ing engine torque reduction and brake intervention, Sta-biliTrak electronic stability control, four-wheel power-assisted disc brakes with ABS; vented front and rear rotors; cast iron front cali-pers (two-piston) and alu-minum rear calipers (single-piston).

SRX is EPA rated at 16 city and 23 highway on gas and 12/17 for E85. My week of mixed-use testing on gasoline alone came in at 18.8mpg.

Entertaining interiorSRX seats five with two up

front and three in row two. Headroom is adequate in row one at 39.7 inches, but a bit tight in row two at 38.4.

Legroom is 41.2 inches in the first seats and 36.3 be-hind, while shoulder room goes 58.3 and 56.3. Cargo volume with the second seats down is 61.18 cu ft. while volume behind the second seats in upright po-sition is 29.20 cu.ft. While cramped rear seat headroom and impacted sightlines and visibility outside prevail, the overall ride is quiet, smooth and luxurious.

The cabin is upscale and comfortable with plenty of high-tech and enter-tainment features (though several were option pack-age upgrades). One cool function is that the Cadil-lac script logos in the front door sill plates illuminate when the doors are opened. Other interior features in-clude dual-zone automatic climate control, driver in-formation center, keyless access, ambient lighting, auto-dimming inside mir-ror with OnStar controls, adjustable pedals, rearview camera system, front bucket seats with power eight-way driver’s adjustment, heated front seats, leather-trimmed heated steering wheel, Ul-traView power sunroof, car-go management system and a cargo shade.

Safety features include a strong body structure and chassis that absorb crash energy, martensitic steel

in the fully enclosed rocker sections, dual-stage fron-tal and side-impact driver and right-front passen-ger air bags, head-curtain side-impact air bags, roll-over mitigation sensors, tire pressure monitoring system and trailer stability assist.

The 2012 Cadillac SRX in AWD Luxury trim starts at $43,885. Performance trim is $48,015 and Premi-

um trim starts at $50,460. Black roof rails add $260, molded splash guards are $170. An upgraded au-dio system with naviga-tion, AM/FM/XM stereo with single CD/DVD play-er, 10gb hard drive to store music, 10 speakers and rear view camera, adds $2395. Rear seat dual-player DVD system with remote control and flip-up 8-inch screens adds $1395 and destination

and freight charges are $875 for a sticker price as tested of $48,105.

It may be hard to believe, but Buick sold more sport utility vehicles last year than it did Regal, LaCross or Lu-cerne sedans.

All the SUVs were En-claves — a high-riding, up-scale family vehicle with seating for at least seven, a quiet interior, pleasant ride and decent power.

Notably, even third-row seats in the roomy Enclave can be used by adults, and there’s relatively easy access to the third row, thanks to a quick-lever release that gets second-row seats out of the way.

The Enclave also earned a top, five-star overall crash test rating from the federal government after posting a five-star rating in side crash protection and four out of five stars in frontal crash protection.

Pricing is up there, even for a base Enclave. But pric-es can still be less than those of some competitors. Start-ing manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price is $37,175 for a base, 2012 Enclave with front-wheel drive. The low-est starting MSRP, includ-ing destination charge, for a 2012 Enclave with all-wheel drive is $39,175.

All Enclaves have the same 288-horsepower, direct in-jection V-6 and six-speed automatic transmission.

Fuel economy ratings, which top out at 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway in a front-wheel drive model,

are comparable with other crossover SUVs. But other SUVs can have more power than the Enclave.

For example, the 2012 Acura MDX, which has a starting retail price of $43,925, comes with a 300-horsepower V-6, six-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive and is rated by the federal government at 16/21 mpg. Tthe 2012 Lin-coln MKT, which starts at $46,160 for a front-wheel drive model, comes with a 303-horsepower V-6 and six-speed automatic and has the same 17/24-mpg rating as the Enclave.

At nearly 17 feet long, the Enclave is among the larger crossover SUVs. Bumper to bumper, it’s just an inch shy of a Cadillac Escalade with regular wheelbase.

Un l i ke t h e E sca l a d e , though, the Enclave rides on a car-based platform. While riding higher above the pavement than a regular car does, passengers ride a bit lower than in the Esca-lade. So, while passengers and driver have good views out the front and sides of the Escalade, they don’t have a huge climb up to get inside.

The Enclave’s exterior styling makes it seem small-er than it is, and proportions are good.

Adding to the appealing looks are 19- and 20-inch wheels and tires from the factory, some with chrome cladding. But the Enclave grille and headlights seems a bit dated these days, when light-emitting diode ac-cent lights and fewer round-

nosed grilles are becoming the norm.

Frankly, the biggest com-plaint about the styling is how little the driver can see of what’s behind the Enclave while backing up. Pillars at the sides of the rear window are sizable, and and liftgate metal comes up to meet the rear-window glass. This made reliance on the test vehicle’s rearview camera imperative.

The Enclave’s 3.6-liter, dual overhead cam V-6 ben-efits from direct fuel injec-tion, and the Enclave feels lively in city traffic and on flat two-lane roads.

P o w e r c a n c o m e o n strongly and torque peaks at 270 foot-pounds at 3,400 rpm, which provides ac-ceptable mid-range perfor-mance and gets the 2-ton Enclave up and moving well. But with several passengers riding in higher altitudes and up-and-down hills, this engine can feel tapped.

By comparison, the MDX V-6 delivers 270 foot-pounds at a 4,500 rpm. But the MDX, with standard all-wheel drive, weighs 230 pounds less than the hefty, 4,780-pound, base Enclave with front-wheel drive. And Lincoln’s MKT has an up-level engine that’s a turbo, providing 350 foot-pounds of torque at 3,500 rpm.

The Enclave’s strong, con-fident engine sounds were a nice surprise for a Buick.

Fuel economy, though, barely made it to 18 mpg in combined city/highway travel. The 18 mpg is equal to the combined mileage re-

ported by the federal gov-ernment for an all-wheel drive Enclave, and translat-ed into 395 miles on an $85-plus fillup of the 22-gallon gas tank.

The ride in the test Enclave was impressively quiet.

There was a lightness to the steering but it was re-sponsive, too. The weighty Enclave rode with some ob-vious heft, and passengers felt the vehicle weight trans-fer from side to side during curves.

Front seats were wide and comfortable. Second-row seats were adjustable cap-tain chairs that could move forward on tracks to help adjust legroom between second- and third-row pas-sengers. Third-row pas-sengers sit across a cush-ioned bench that rests closer to the floor than the first two rows, but there’s still good headroom back there of 37.8 inches, down a bit from the 40.4 inches in the front seat.

Cargo capacity is a whop-ping 115.9 cubic feet when second and third rows are folded down. With all the seats holding passengers, the back of the Enclave still offers 24.1 cubic feet of car-go room, more than most sedans. Towing capacity is 4,500 pounds.

Consumer Reports puts Enclave reliability at below average.

Last month, some 2012 Enclaves were recalled so dealers could tighten windshield wipers to pre-vent blades from coming loose.

Easier credit, new models keep U.S. auto sales solid

DETROIT — Easier credit, hot new cars and falling gas prices kept Americans buying vehicles at a strong pace in May despite bad economic news.

May sales totaled 1.3 million cars and trucks, up 26 per-cent from the same month a year earlier. It was the best May for the industry since 2008.

The good results surprised some analysts, since car sales usually hew closely to the performance of the stock market and to consumer confidence numbers. In May, confidence was wobbly and the stock market had its worst month in

two years.“We should have had a disastrous new vehicle sales

month, but consumers are still interested in the new prod-ucts,” said Jesse Toprak, vice president of market intel-ligence for the car buying site TrueCar.com. “This was an anomaly.”

Toprak thinks June sales will stumble as people weigh troubling headlines, like Friday’s report that U.S. unem-ployment rose for the first time in 11 months. He expects sales to pick up at the end of the year as the economy im-proves and the presidential election ends political uncer-tainty.

But others don’t think the disappointing news will derail the industry’s recovery.

“I don’t believe that the employment data in and of itself will have an impact,” said Ken Czubay, Ford’s U.S. sales chief. Czubay said dealer traffic was strong in May, par-ticularly over Memorial Day weekend.

Toyota led sales increases with an 87 percent rise from a year earlier, while Honda saw a 48-percent jump. In May 2011, both companies ran short of cars and trucks after the earthquake in Japan crippled their factories. But their showrooms are full again, and they’re rapidly gaining back the market share that they lost to competitors such as Hyundai and GM.

Sales of the Toyota Prius hybrid tripled from a year ago, while Honda Civic sales were up 80 percent.
