Chrysler brings back the sizzling SRT Viper

Ford to expand Chinese factories againDEARBORN, Mich. — Ford says it will spend $600 mil-

lion to expand its factory capacity in China as it tries to play catch-up with competitors.

The company says it will add to its factories in Chongq-ing to handle growing demand. The additions will give Ford the ability to make 350,000 more vehicles per year by 2014. That will increase its total to 950,000.

Ford Motor Co. says it plans to triple the cars in its Chi-nese lineup to 15 over the next three years. It also will add 20 new engines and transmissions.

The company will build a new assembly line, body shop and paint shop at the Chongqing site in southwestern Chi-na. The investment will be made with the company’s joint-venture partner, Changan Ford Mazda Automobile Limited.

Chrysler recalls small Jeeps to fix gas valves

DETROIT — Chrysler is recalling about 1,700 small Jeeps because faulty gas tank valves can cause fires.

The recall affects some 2012 all-wheel-drive Jeep Com-pass and Patriot SUVs.

Chrysler says the valves were damaged when the manu-facturer tested them for leaks.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the valves can leak gasoline if the SUVs are involved in a crash. Chrysler says it doesn’t know of any fires or injuries. The recall is expected to start in June. Dealers will replace the fuel tanks free of charge.

Owners with questions can call Chrysler at (800) 853-1403.

Nissan wants to woo more U.S. car drivers

DETROIT — Mention Nissan to most car drivers and they think of the Altima. And not much else.

The sedan is America’s second-best selling car and Nis-san’s top seller by far. When the new version goes on sale in July, it will likely be a hit.

But Nissan’s other models — such as the Sentra small car and the boxy Cube — are struggling to win buyers, even as auto sales surge. They’re old, inefficient, or just plain odd. And their designs are inconsistent, which keeps customers from sticking with the brand when they move up or down a car size. That’s making it hard for Nissan to hang on to cus-tomers or woo new ones in the U.S.

Nissan is hoping to win over U.S. buyers with some new models in key segments. In addition to the Altima, Nissan will roll out new versions of the Versa hatchback, Sentra, and Pathfinder and Rogue SUVs over the next 15 months. The company promises more emphasis on fuel economy, more luxurious interiors, handsome and consistent styling and updated dashboard technology. The new Pathfinder, for example, will be lighter and nimbler, which will improve fuel economy and make it a smoother ride.

The new vehicles should help Nissan step out of the shadow of its Japanese competitors, Toyota and Honda, who have outsold Nissan in the U.S. nearly every year since the late 1980s. Toyota commanded a 14 percent share of the U.S. market in the first three months of this year, compared with 9 percent for Nissan.

DETROIT — The SRT Viper is Chrysler’s roar, a comeback car for a comeback company.

T h e 2 0 1 3 V i p e r, i n t r o d u c e d Wednesday at the New York Auto Show, is the fifth generation of the iconic two-seater, which first went on sale as the Dodge Viper in 1992. More important, it’s the first Viper since Chrysler shut down produc-tion of the sports car in 2010. At that time, the company was emerg-ing from bankruptcy protection and needed to focus on improving high volume, bread-and-butter products like the Sebring sedan and Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Ralph Gilles, the president and CEO of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Tech-nology team — or SRT — said uncer-tainty about the Viper’s future was “gut-wrenching.” The company de-cided to revive the Viper as its for-tunes changed and sales rose. Chrys-ler earned $183 million last year, its first annual profit since 1997.

“The launch of the 2013 Viper proves that we simply would not let the performance icon of the Chrysler Group die,” Gilles said in a statement.

The Viper, which is built by hand at a plant in Detroit, won’t make a lot of money for Chrysler. The company sold just 1,172 Vipers in 2007, the year before the recession began. They cost around $90,000 then, and will likely top $100,000 when they go on sale later this year.

Instead, the Viper is a so-called halo car that shows what the com-pany is capable of. It will also bring luster to Chrysler’s other SRT offer-ings, including performance versions of the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Challenger.

Under the hood The original Viper was among the

first cars with a V-10 engine. The 8.4-liter V-10 is back, although this version is about 25 pounds lighter than the last one thanks to new materials. Chrysler expects it to get 640 horsepower and 600 pound-feet of torque. For compar-ison, the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 gets 638 horsepower and 604 pound-feet of torque from its V-8. There is a six-speed manual transmission.

Outside Gilles has famously said that the Vi-

per’s design was inspired by “a naked woman on the beach.” The fluid design has some of Viper’s hallmarks, includ-ing a “double bubble” roof that gives the driver and passenger more headroom and gills along the fender to release heat from the engine. The headlights are de-signed to look like snake eyes, while the LED tail lights have a snakeskin texture on the lens.

InsideChrysler is bringing the Viper’s sig-

nature bare-bones interior up a notch, with better seat padding, lower seats for improved ergonomics and higher

quality materials. A specially designed instrument cluster can be customized by the driver. The Viper also will have an 8.4-inch touchscreen to control the radio, navigation, climate and other ap-plications.

Fuel economy Chrysler hasn’t released that yet, but

no one who buys this car will really care.

Price Chrysler hasn’t released a price, but

expect it to crack $100,000. The Cor-vette ZR1 starts at $111,600.

Cheers Chrysler didn’t truly have a full line-

up until it brought back this car. It’s a triumph for the company and for the Detroit plant where it will be made.

Jeers There are lots of other great sports

cars available for this much money, from the Audi R8 to the Porsche 911. The Viper could even face some com-petition from within its own fam-ily. Fiat, which holds a majority stake in Chrysler, also owns Ferrari and Maserati.

Value in a luxury sedan: Lexus LS

By ANN M. JOBASSociATEd PrESS

With a starting retail price of $68,505, the 2012 Lexus LS sedan is bargain-priced compared to Eu-ropean competitors.

The flagship sedan of the luxury Lexus line, the roomy, comfort-able, V-8-powered LS also is a recommended buy of Consum-er Reports magazine, where this four-door auto is rated above av-erage in reliability.

And the luxury-swathed, five-passenger LS is notable for its many large, well-labeled and well-arranged buttons and controls that allow a driver to operate the sound system and heater/air condition-er directly, without having to go through a menu of selections on a display screen.

Yet, the LS isn’t old school. It’s just one of the best in the luxury sedan class at providing both old and new, easy-to-understand in-terfaces for drivers to adjust things they tune frequently.

There is no frustrating BMW-like i-Drive system here, nor a confusing Audi-like scrolling half circle of selections for car settings.

Still, while the LS is a fine high-way cruiser, it lags V-8 competi-tors in engine power.

Starting manufacturer’s sug-gested retail price, including desti-nation charge, is $68,505 for a 2012 LS 460 with rear-wheel drive, 380-horsepower V-8 and “regu-lar” length of 16.6 feet. With all-wheel drive, the 2012 LS 460 has a starting MSRP, including destina-tion charge, of $70,810. A 2012 LS 460 L, which stretches to 17 feet in length, has a starting retail price of $74,050. With all-wheel drive, the 460 L starts at $76,355.

In comparison, the start-ing MSRP, including destination charge, for a 2012 Mercedes-Benz S550 with 429-horsepower V-8 and standard all-wheel drive is $95,375, or some $24,500 more than a base, all-wheel drive LS 460. The 2012 BMW 750i with

400-horsepower V-8 starts at $86,195, or some $17,600 more than an LS.

The major price competitor to the LS is Hyundai’s rear-wheel drive 2012 Equus, which has a 429-horsepower V-8 and a start-ing retail price of $59,900. Note that while the Equus comes with standard luxury features, it does not carry a luxury badge.

Lexus, whose parent company is Toyota, struggled last year with car supplies because of the Japan earthquake and tsunami. As a re-sult, after 11 years as best-selling luxury brand in the United States, Lexus last year fell behind BMW. And LS sales so far in calendar 2012 are down some 30 percent from a year ago.

The car didn’t receive major changes for the 2012 model year.

But the LS is back to its roots as a value-based competitor to the Eu-ropean luxury cars.

The test LS 460 showed how it can make buyers feel at home who enjoy an environment free from

intimidating, overwhelming tech-nology.

The interior of the LS test car in-cluded wide front seats that were stylized and shaped as sport seats. They were fatigue-reducing rest-ing spots that provided good sup-port without being hard, and the range of power adjustments made them adaptable to both short and tall passengers.

Gauges were easy to understand and well illuminated, even in day-light. There was nothing gim-micky or distracting about them.

Controls on the center of the dashboard on down to the cen-ter console were a pleasant mix of large buttons and good-sized dis-plays and were arranged in a co-herent way.

For example, driver and front passenger could readily find the respective temperature controls and tune the radio without fuss.

Having listened to the Mark Levinson audio system available on the LS before, though, I would have preferred to have it in the test car. Instead, sounds came through

a premium, 10-speaker system that worked fine but didn’t quite have the crispness and amazing clarity of the Levinson system.

All seams on the seats and gaps on the metal car body as well as between interior trim pieces were perfectly aligned for exceptional fit and finish on the test car.

The ride was compliant in nor-mal suspension mode, so riders didn’t feel much of the road and bumps came through as only mild vibrations.

There was a mild amount of road feel from the optional summer tires that were 19-inchers on at-tractive, 10-spoke alloy wheels.

But the sensations dialed up when the suspension setting was moved to sport mode, and passen-gers readily could notice the ride was stiffer and bumps more pro-nounced.

This was part of an optional sport package that added paddle shifters inside for quick shifting, sans clutch pedal, of the eight-speed automatic transmission.

The more than 4,200-pound LS

also stiffened a bit in corners and turns while in sport mode, but it still felt like a good-sized, weighty auto in emergency maneuvers.

The 4.6-liter, four-cam V-8 delivers strong, but not unnerv-ing, power, and it comes through smoothly. It was normal for the car to glide forward, rather than roar forward, in serene and re-fined fashion. The V-8 tops out at 367 foot-pounds at 4,100 rpm, so 0-to-60 miles an hour takes 6.4 seconds, which is about a second slower than higher-powered V-8 cars like the S550.

Premium gasoline is required in the LS’s 22.2-gallon tank, so a fil-lup at today’s prices is above $90.

In the test drive, which was half city driving and half on highways, the LS managed 18.9 mpg.

The official U.S. government fuel economy rating for the LS 460 is 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on highways.

This compares with 15/25 mpg for the more powerful 2012 Mer-cedes S550 and 15/22 mpg for the more powerful 2012 BMW 750i.

Ford’s top truck adds six-cylinder option

By MIkE BLAkEcArliSlE EVENTS

Ford F-150 has been the num-ber-one selling truck in America for 34 straight years and is headed for its 35th win in a row as well as again being America’s top-selling vehicle for the 25th consecutive year. This year, something new has been added … two new V-6 engine choices.

The 6-cylinder engine has been a staple in many trucks over the years, but Ford’s F-150 has been known for its V-8 power since it was introduced in 1948 as the Ford Bonus-Built, a replacement for the previous car-based pickup line launched in 1941. In its 12th generation, Ford continues to of-fer V-8 brawn with two 8-cylin-der choices – a 5.0-liter four-valve dual-overhead-camshaft Ti-VCT V-8 that thunders out 360hp and 380 lbs-ft of torque, and a 6.2-liter two-valve single-overhead-cam-shaft V-8 that stampedes 411hp and 434 lbs-ft of torque – but the Blue Oval has also moved into 6-cylinder territory.

More power from 6 cylindersReplacing its venerable 4.6-liter

V-8, this year’s F-150 can be out-fitted with a 3.7-liter V-6 that it shares with Mustang and which powers up with 302 hp and 278 lbs-ft (both of which are improve-ments over the old 4.6’s output).

But the real powerhouse-6 comes from the turbocharged 3.5-liter Ti-VCT EcoBoost V-6 turbo with sequential direct fuel injec-tion and a six-speed automatic transmission. The system produc-es 365hp and an aggressive 420 lbs-ft of torque for a tow rating of 11,300 lbs. and a fuel-conscious EPA rating of 16mpg in the city and 22mpg on the highway. The 3.5 is specially tuned and calibrated for

the F-150 and delivers 20 percent better fuel economy than the pre-vious 4.6 V-8 produced.

Tough-looking designOn the outside, Ford F-150 still

conveys the muscular, durable tough truck that delivers at work or at play. With a confident front end, athletic shoulders and a deep bed, my Tuxedo Black test truck in 4x4 configuration with a Su-perCab and a 6.5-foot box, sat on a 144.5-inch wheelbase with a length of 231.9 inches, height of 76.1 inches and width exclud-ing mirrors of 76.1 inches (add 3.1 inches for the mirrors). The cargo box is 78.8 inches long, 50 inches wide at the wheelhouse and 22.4 inches high. Curb weight was a hefty 5476 lbs.

Premium turbo engineMoving back to F-150’s pow-

er central, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost is a premium engine offering af-ter-launch power comparable to a naturally aspirated V-8 and fuel economy of smaller-displacement engines. Ti-VCT creates precise, variable timing control of both the intake and exhaust camshafts to optimize power, performance and fuel economy and it delivers up to 90 percent of peak torque from 1,700 rpm to 5,000 rpm. That power translates well on the high-way with virtually no turbo lag, aggressive passing power and ex-treme confidence. It also bestowed solid track times of 7.6 seconds for a zero-to-60mph sprint and a 16-flat quarter-mile.

At low speeds, you can feel the fuel drain, but you also have no problems towing full loads with ease and my weeklong examina-tion showed that the impression was correct as my test truck al-

located only 12.2mpg in city driv-ing, but topped out at 23.5mpg on the highway for an average of 19.4mpg.

Steering was communicative at low speed, but a bit light when pushed on autocross twisties, and the ride was quiet -- almost too quiet for a big powerful truck.

Truck roomy and car functional

Inside, F-150 is truck-roomy, and car-functional. Interior head-room is 41.0 inches up front and 39.8 inches in the extra cab. Leg-room goes 41.4 inches in row one and 33.3 in the second seats, with shoulder room measuring 65.0 and 65.7 inches.

Interior features include color-coordinated steering wheel, car-pet and floor mats; driver and front passenger door scuff plates; display center; outside temp gauge; power windows and door locks with au-tolock; perimeter alarm; remote

keyless entry with integrated key transmitter; illuminated entry and panic button; cruise control; Secu-riLock anti-theft ignition; manual air conditioning; compass; front passenger side A-pillar grab handle and fade-to-off interior lighting.

Rated high for safety, F-150 is endowed with an anti-lock brak-ing system, AdvanceTrac with roll stability control, Hill Start As-sist, dual stage driver and passen-ger front airbags, dual stage driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, Safety Canopy front/rear outboard side curtain airbags, MyKey system, SOS post crash alert system, auto lock safety belt feature for child seats and tire pres-sure monitoring system

The 2012 Ford F-150 is packaged in formats and prices that can fit nearly every truck taste and budget.

The basic XL trim starts at $23,300 and the power-luxury FX4 starts at $37,755. My test F-150 in XLT trim is at $27,965 for a regular

cab and 6.5-foot box in 4x2 con-figuration with a 3.7-liter V-6 en-gine. The Super Cab adds $2590 (a Super Crew cab would have added $6305 to the sticker); the 3.5-li-ter V-6 EcoBoost engine added $2095, and 4x4 added $3420. The XLT Convenience package added Chrome (including running boards and 18-inch wheels), trailer towing, power heated side mirrors, 6-way power driver seat, power adjust-able pedals, Ford SYNC, 4.2-inch LCD cluster with leather-wrapped steering wheel and 5-way steering controls -- discounted by $1500 for a package price of $1465. Destina-tion charges of $995 put the final sticker at $38,530.
