1949 DeSoto Custom• Chrysler introduced the DeSoto name in 1928

with much success. DeSoto is named after the 16th century Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, who discovered the Mississippi River and explored much of the North American territory. In early 1949, the DeSoto was still manufactured using the prewar-era body. Mid-year came, and the completely redesigned Custom was referred to as “1949 Second Series” models. The Custom came with a six-cylinder engine, generating 109 brake horsepower.
