03 04 EXTERIOR DESIGNADVANCEDIN EVERY WAY

How advanced something isdepends on how you view it; a key principle Honda’s engineersconsidered when designing thenew Accord Tourer. At first glance, many will see a wider, lower car, while our engineers see improvedaerodynamics and stability. This isbecause every aesthetic advancehas a fundamental engineeringobjective. Take the sleek linesflowing from the headlights to thewheel arches and the newlydesigned tailgate; all part of anaerodynamic shape thatsignificantly reduces nose and taillift to improve the Accord’s overallbalance. And we didn’t stop at theexterior. Once behind the wheelyou’ll notice how quiet the cabin is,through a combination of improvedaerodynamics working in tandemwith high quality sound deadeningmaterials throughout the bodystructure. It’s exactly this balancebetween looks, performance andtechnology that makes the newAccord a truly advanceddriving experience.

THE VALUE OF EXPERIENCE

Experience is a quality Hondaengineers and designers bringto every project. We believe thatour experience means we have theknowledge of what is neededrather than what is merely desired. This vision has resulted in Honda’sphilosophy for manufacturing carsthat are always more than the sum of their parts.

The Accord incorporates some of ourlatest engineering developments, froman improved chassis to the powerfulnew engines, the automated safety

features to the remote operatedpower tailgate. But at Honda we havealways believed that things workbest in unison. Individually thesetechnologies are state-of-the-art, butthe way they have been puttogether lets you feel what advanceddriving truly is.

SMOOTH? SPORTY?HOW ABOUT BOTH?

Combining a sporty performance witha smooth drive was a challenge to ourengineers. The innovative solutionwas to move the fuel tank and enginecloser to the car’s centre of gravity tominimise body roll when cornering. The all new front double wishbone,multi-link suspension and greaterbody rigidity means it respondssharper and more accurately to thedriver’s demands. A new dampersystem helps regulate the type ofperformance required, from dynamicand sporty to smooth and luxurious.

Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) isa traction control system thatcalculates the exact amount of

power, brake-force and tyre gripneeded to prevent skidding andgive you maximum control atall times. It works together withElectronic Brake-force Distribution(EBD) to ensure that your car alwaysstays exactly where it should be.So no matter how the roads orbraking conditions vary, it cancompensate for weight transferwithout you even lifting a finger.Even when you’re towing, you canrely on Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)to sense and reduce vehicle andtrailer roll. All in all, the Accord’ssmooth and responsive driveprovides you with a confidenceto enjoy your journey.

3. Action: If a collisionis unavoidable, strongseatbelt retraction willautomatically be appliedto provide maximumprotection for front seatoccupants beforeapplying brakes toreduce impact speed.

COLLISIONMITIGATIONBRAKING SYSTEM(CMBS)

Works in three stages:

1. Warning: A buzzerwill sound and the word‘BRAKE’ appears on themulti-information displayif the distance betweenyou and the vehicleahead drops below apre-set level.

2. Precautions: CMBSapplies light brakingand tightens the driver’sseatbelt if the distancebetween vehiclescontinues to drop.Buzzer and warningsigns are still active.

THE MORE EYES,THE BETTER

At Honda, for many years we’vebeen developing technology in oneof the world’s most advancedhumanoid robots: ASIMO. Similar toASIMO’s sensor and visualrecognition systems, the mostadvanced sensing systems can befound in the Accord’s AdvancedDriver Assist System (ADAS),available on EX grades. The new Accord applies thistechnology to minimise driver fatigueand improve safety on long journeys.

Once driving, if the pre-set distancebetween you and the driver aheadreduces, the Collision MitigationBraking System (CMBS) automaticallycomes to your assistance. An audibleand visual dashboard warning willalert you to any danger and yourspeed will be reduced to help avoidan impact.

Page 9: Accord Tourer Brochure 2008

LANE KEEPING ASSISTSYSTEM (LKAS)

A small camera senses wherethe white lines are on the roadand relays tiny adjustments tothe electric power steering tohelp keep you safely in lane.

THE MORE EYES,THE BETTER

Another measure to keep yourdriving experience safe and enjoyableis Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).By using a radar device in the frontgrille, ACC automatically slowsdown your Accord if it senses thecar in front is decelerating and willincrease speed up to its pre-setcruise control limit if the way isclear. You can also manually adjustthe pre-set speed and distance withsteering wheel mounted controls.

The innovative Lane Keeping AssistSystem (LKAS) uses a cameramounted by the rear view mirror tosense line markings on the road.LKAS calculates the amount ofsteering torque required to help youkeep the vehicle on track and issupported by an audible warning ifyou drift off course.

As with all of Honda’s developments, they only operate with your interaction. We’ve put as many eyes as possibleon the road to make your journeysafer and more pleasurable.

i-DTEC. ECONOMY AND POWERWITHOUT COMPROMISE

The i-DTEC is the latest iterationof our ground-breaking dieselengine technology. Its designmirrors our commitment to findingcleaner, purer and more advancedways of powering our cars.

This 2.2 litre all aluminium engineis cleaner, more refined and quieterthan before, yet it still delivers aperformance of 150PS and increasedtorque of 350Nm for a sportierdriving experience. The newmulti-stage pilot injection systemlets the engine continuously adaptto the driving conditions by

releasing smaller injections of fuelafter the main power boost. These added injections make thei-DTEC smoother than traditionaldiesel engines to deliver a trulyrewarding drive.

It’s another example of how Hondaare commited to developing thelatest practical technology to achievemuch cleaner exhaust emissions.

NEW DIESEL AUTOMATIC

In addition to offering a manualgearbox, the i-DTEC is our firstdiesel engine available withautomatic transmission. Thiscombines the ease and relaxationyou expect from driving anautomatic with the impressivetorque output and excellent fueleconomy delivered by this newdiesel engine.

i-VTEC. AN ENGINE OR APIECE OF TECHNOLOGY?

Years of development and testinghas culminated in the latestgeneration of i-VTEC engines.Honda view engines as more thanbeing just the power-train of the car.Our engines are a piece of refinedtechnology designed to delivereverything you need for pure drivingpleasure – from sheer exhilarationand performance to lower emissionsand better fuel economy.

There are two i-VTEC petrolengines to choose from. The newlydeveloped 2.4 litre i-VTEC enginedelivers an advanced drivingexperience with effortless powerdelivery and fuel economy.Increasing the intake valve diametersand optimising the cam lift andvalve timing has improved the allimportant intake and exhaustvolume. With an output of 201PS,and a fuel consumption of up to31.7mpg, it has the ability to

balance economy and emissionswith impressive performance.

You can also choose a 2.0 litrei-VTEC engine that delivers anexcellent balance between powerand fuel economy with a fuelconsumption of up to 38.7mpg.Both come with a 6 speed manualtransmission which includes a shiftindicator that informs you of thebest moment to change gear inorder to maximise fuel economy.

The 5 speed automatic transmissionprovides stress-free motoring, with the option of a steering wheelmounted paddle shift function.By selecting the ‘S’ mode, a sportierdrive is engaged and the paddle shifttakes full priority. The introductionof a new kick-down feature on the5 speed automatic transmission alsooffers the driver an additional burstof speed when required.

DEVELOPING SAFETY

To ensure we remain at the forefrontof safety technology, we built theworld’s first multi-directional crashtest safety facility. The results ofrigorous testing and analysis haveall been applied to the new Accord. The Advanced CompatibilityEngineering (ACE) structure of the car is made from 42% hightensile steel, which dispersesenergy away from those inside. And the high rigidity body forms astronger protection zone in theevent of a collision, protecting youfrom the force of an impact.

Page 16: Accord Tourer Brochure 2008

SAFETY IN CONTROL

A car with impressive looks andperformance should have equallyimpressive safety features.Large rear brake lights ensurethose behind you have clearwarning of your actions.Unavoidable impacts trigger aseries of safety features to helpkeep you protected. Front and sideairbags are controlled by anintelligent Supplemental RestraintSystem (SRS) which recogniseswhere the impact has occurred, and inflates those airbags requiredto give you all round protection. We’ve also thought about who maybe sitting in the passenger seat.Airbag deployment can be adaptedto give maximum protection forchildren in a child seat, giving youeven more peace of mind.

Three-point Emergency LockingRetractor (ELR) seatbelts withload limiting pre-tensionerstighten to limit body movement.Active head restraints moveforward on rear- end impact tosupport the neck area, reducingwhiplash. In addition, safely hiddenfrom view in the rear child seatanchor mount, is a lock to gainaccess to the boot space in case of emergencies. Simply insert themain ignition key, turn, and theboot will open.

49 50 GLOSSARY

ABSThe Anti-lock Braking System prevents the wheelsfrom locking when the brakes are applied in anemergency, reducing the possibility of a skid onwet, icy or loose surfaces, and enabling the driverto retain steering control.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC) ACC uses information from a millimetre waveradar mounted inside the front grille to measurethe distance to the vehicle ahead, while vehiclespeed and yaw rate sensors detect the vehicle’sdriving parameters. In addition to maintaininga set speed, ACC is also able to automaticallyregulate both the vehicle speed and its distanceto the vehicle ahead travelling in the same lane, thereby reducing the burden of motorway (or similarroad) driving and enhancing driver comfort and safety.

ACC only operates if all the following conditionsare fully fulfilled:- the vehicle speed is set from 20mph- main switch is activated.

ADVANCED COMPATIBILITYENGINEERING (ACE)The Accord has been designed with an innovativeframe structure engineered to reduce theconcentrated frontal force on occupants in front-end impacts. The Accord’s AdvancedCompatibility Engineering (ACE) design disperses andabsorbs crash energy over a larger area, enhancingthe preservation of the cabin space and improvingsafety for all occupants. Additionally, ACE also helpsto reduce misalignment with vehicles of different sizes. The design of the Accord’s structure reduces impactforces acting upon other vehicles.

AERODYNAMICSAerodynamics refers to the ability of a car toovercome the resistance or ‘drag’ generatedby its body as it moves through the atmosphere. The lower the Coefficient of Drag (Cd), the moreaerodynamic the shape. An aerodynamic shapeis more fuel efficient, quieter and keeps the carfirmly on the road. The Cd value multiplied bythe cross section area of the car is the wind dragof the car.

BLUETOOTH®

The Bluetooth® Hands Free Telephone (HFT) systemenables the driver to make and receive calls withouttaking their hands off the wheel. By using aBluetooth® compatible telephone, automaticconnection may be made on start up. Telephonecontacts can be easily transferred onto the systemand made accessible via the Satellite Navigationscreen or through voice activated commands. With this system, even redialling and transferringcalls are simple and safe.

BRAKE ASSISTIf you have to make an emergency stop, thesystem detects the quick pedal action andautomatically boosts braking power to reduce thestopping distance.

COLLISION MITIGATION BRAKINGSYSTEM (CMBS)CMBS has been specifically designed to help alertthe driver of an impending collision or, if it’sunavoidable, to reduce the severity of impact byautomatically applying the brakes if a collision isdetected. The ‘eye’ of the system is a radartransmitter mounted behind the Accord’s grille.A radar signal is constantly transmitted and thereturn echo evaluated. If the system detects avehicle or obstruction in the road, it determines thedistance and closing speed. If the closing speedgoes above the threshold, the system immediatelyalerts the driver with a flashing indicator on theinstrument panel and an audible alarm. If the drivertakes no action to reduce speed, the system willautomatically tug at the driver’s seatbelt and lightlyapply the brakes. At the point when the systemsenses that a frontal collision is inevitable and thedriver has still taken no avoidance action, both of thefront seatbelts are retracted tightly and strongbraking is applied automatically. This automaticaction is designed to lower impact speed and helpreduce vehicle damage and the severity of personalinjury.

CO2

Carbon dioxide is an exhaust gas believed tobe one of the causes of the green house effect. The lower the CO2 emissions, the better forthe environment.

COMMON RAILCommon rail diesel engines have a reservoir ofhighly pressurised fuel close to the cylinder heads. As well as allowing extremely precise amounts offuel to be injected into the combustion chambervery quickly, the pressure means the fuel forms afiner mist, so burns more efficiently. This makesthe engine more economical, and reduces noise, smoke and emissions levels.

DOUBLE WISHBONE SUSPENSIONThis wheel suspension layout provides maximumaccuracy in defining the wheel movement duringdriving. The result is precise and predictable handlingof the car as well as reduced body movement duringbraking and cornering. Double wishbone suspensionsystems are used in race cars.

ELECTRONIC BRAKE-FORCEDISTRIBUTION (EBD)EBD works in tandem with ABS, analysing weightdistribution around the car and automaticallyadjusting the braking force applied to front and rearwheels to help maintain directional stability.

ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROLSYSTEM (ETCS or Drive-By-Wire) The mechanical link fromthe accelerator pedal to the engine is replacedwith sensors that detect the throttle position andfeed instructions directly to the enginemanagement system. This provides instant, directly proportional yet smooth responses tothrottle inputs.

ERGONOMICSErgonomics is the applied science of designing aworking environment, in this case the car’s cabin,in order to maximise the occupants’ comfort andsafety. In simple terms, that means locating majorcontrols and instruments in a way that makesthem easy and comfortable to use and to see. This is extended to seating which minimises driverfatigue and discomfort.

FUEL CONSUMPTIONThe figures for the fuel consumption and CO2emissions are to give you an indication of the car’sperformance. Following legislation by the VCA

(Vehicle Certification Agency), all car manufacturersgenerate these statistics through the sameindustry standard test. This allows comparisonacross all manufacturers and models. The testsuse a base grade version of the model and do nottake into account optional levels of equipment, such as different sized wheels, tyres and otherfactors that can affect the economy of the model. The test is on a rolling road and there is noadditional weight in the car other than the driver(no passengers or cargo) and it does notaccount for individual driving style, which canmean a difference to the figures achievable inthe real world.

GRADE LOGICAn intelligent system built into our 5 speedautomatic transmissions. When the Accord is infully automatic mode, Grade Logic recognisesdifferent driving styles and road conditions, thenselects the optimum gear ratio for smooth, seamless driving, particularly over hilly routes andthrough corners.

HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE (HID)The sealed HID headlamps, instead of a bulb, contain xenon gas. An electric spark (arc)passing through the gas produces an even, truewhite light with a higher intensity thanconventional halogen units, for improved visibility.

i-DTECThe Honda i-DTEC engine – the ‘i’ stands for‘intelligent’ – is a new generation direct injectionengine that uses both the latest common rail andvariable turbocharger technology. As a result,it’s significantly quieter, smoother, more powerfuland returns greater fuel economy thanconventional diesels.

i-VTECThe combination of VTEC and VTC for improvedengine performance, fuel economy and emissions.

LANE KEEPING ASSIST SYSTEM (LKAS)Identifies the boundaries of the vehicle’s lane byprocessing images from a C-MOS cameramounted behind the windscreen. It then calculatesand provides the optimum steering torque to keep

the vehicle in the centre of the lane. A continuousbeep sound will be emitted when the vehicle isabout to cross the lane markings.

The Lane Keeping Assist System operates whenthe following conditions are fully fulfilled:- on roads with left and right boundary markings

(where markings are clear and visible)- on motorways or roads that are equivalent

to motorways- driver has to keep contact with the steering wheel;

if the system fails to recognise the driver’s input onthe steering, it switches itself off

- side indicators are not activated - steering torque generated by the driver does

not indicate imminent lane change manoeuvre.

POWERPower is a measurement of how fast work canbe done.

SATELLITE NAVIGATION SYSTEMWITH VOICE RECOGNITIONThe satellite linked, DVD based navigation systemdelivers turn by turn directions by voice andmoving map display all the way to your destination. The DVD also contains points of interest such asservice stations if you should require them in anunfamiliar area. The system can recognise over550 voice commands – including many operationsfor the audio and climate control systems – so thedriver can make adjustments without taking theirhands off the steering wheel.

TORQUETorque is a twisting or rotational force. For example, when you use a spanner to tighten a bolt, you areactually applying torque to turn the bolt. The furtherout you hold the spanner, the more torque youapply. Low rev torque is the ability of an engineto develop strong response (rotational force),and hence, acceleration from lower revs andspeeds. As speed rises, torque becomes lessimportant than power for maintaining high speeds.

TRAILER STABILITY ASSISTTrailer Stability Assist (TSA) System works inconjunction with VSA and has been designed

to enhance safety when towing a trailer.Through various sensors, normally attributedjust to the vehicle’s VSA, TSA will initiate theappropriate brake applications to the wheelswhich will then stabilise the Accord and trailer.

VARIABLE TURBOCHARGERTurbochargers use rotors to pressurise the airgoing into the cylinders. This increases the air’soxygen density, improving combustion andproducing more power. The turbocharger fittedto the i-DTEC engine has variable nozzles, whichboost the airflow according to how hard youpress the accelerator – the more you put yourfoot down, the more the airflow is increased. This produces instant, smooth acceleration, virtually eliminating the problem of ‘turbo lag’.

VEHICLE STABILITY ASSIST (VSA)VSA helps keep the Accord on course during fastor tight turns by detecting and correcting potentialundersteer or oversteer. The system continuallymonitors vehicle speed, throttle position, individualwheel speeds, steering angle, lateral G-force andyaw rate to detect when oversteer or understeer isimminent. When necessary, VSA automaticallyreduces the engine’s torque and uses the ABSsystem to apply brakes to each wheel, as needed,to help stabilise the vehicle. The response is soquick that the instability may be corrected beforethe driver even knows it’ s occurring.

VTCVariable Timing Control changes the timing angleof the intake side camshaft relative to the crankshaftas engine speed and load change. This way thecylinder filling with air/fuel mixture is optimised forimproved torque and performance, with 90% oftorque available at just 3,000 rpm.

VTECVariable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Controlvaries the amount of valve lift and the durationof valve opening during the intake stroke ofeach engine cylinder. The effect is optimisedcombustion over changing engine speeds withthe result of reduced fuel consumption andemissions as well as increased engine performance.

MOBILISING A NATIONAs a young man, Soichiro Honda dreamed ofgiving all people, no matter what gender, wealth orstatus, motorised transport. Even to this day, insome countries, there is no word for motorbike, they simply say a ‘Honda’.

RACING DNAHaving created the Honda Motor Company ,Soichiro was now able to concentrate on hispassion for racing, learning quickly that defeatwas only another way of improving. This love ofovercoming challenges would become the heartof our philosophy.

THE RED HHonda is widely regarded as a sports brand, producing top class performance machines inMotoGP, power boats, ATVs and even lawnmowers. If we can build it, it is said, we can race it.

Soichiro Honda once said, “Think for yourself and don’t follow in other people’s footsteps.”

It’s a sentiment that has allowed us to explore some of the most advanced and radical ideas in modern engineering. It’s the thinking that hastaken us from building affordable motorbikes to winning Grand Prix and building emission free cars. But, perhaps more than anything, it’sthe reason why we believe in the Power of Dreams.

Because of our sporting heritage, we knew road cars built with performance technology required higher standards of safety. To achievethis we constructed the world’s largest crash testing facility and harnessed what we’ve learned from ASIMO, one of the world’s mostadvanced humanoid robots, to refine the innovative technologies found in our cars.

THE POWER OF DREAMS 51 52

THE POWER TO BE DIFFERENTWe believe that engines are good. The challengeis making them better for all of us. This is why wecreated a jet with engines above the wing insteadof below to increase fuel efficiency and loweremissions. We also vowed never to manufacture2-stroke outboard engines and only make lighter, cleaner 4-strokes.

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGYEvery piece of technology we create is for a reason.Even the cameras, laser sensors and microprocessorsin ASIMO, our advanced humanoid robot, areinfluencing the design of our cars to be safer andmore intelligent than ever before. And our conceptHome Energy Station can provide fuel for ouremission free fuel cell car and help to power a home.

A BRIGHTER FUTUREAt Honda we have always strived to developproducts that benefit all, and that includes ourplanet. We believe our development of emissionfree cars and reusable energy sources is achallenge we need to undertake to help protectthe planet for everyone. And as Soichiro said, “If itis difficult, it is worth doing”.
