    ARC

    or

    A

Draws an arc. The default method ofdrawing arcs is selecting three points(so-called "3 point arc"), which are thetwo endpoints of the arc and some otherpoint along its locus. Other methods ofdrawing an arc can be specified bythree letters, such as SEA, whichmeans "Start Point, End Point, andIncluded Angle."

    A Included angle

    C Center point of arc

D Direction angle of a line tangent to

    the arc

    E Endpoint of arc

L Length of chord passing thru both

    endpoints of the arc

    R Radius

    S Start point of arc

uses the end of the last line or arc asthe start point for the arc

AREA Computes the area of any shape byselecting points at the corners of the

shape, or by selecting a circle orpolyline after typing or picking the "E"option

    A sets "Add" mode

    S sets "Subtract" mode

E computes area of selected circle orpolyline

ARRAY Makes multiple copies of selectedobjects in a rectangular (parallel withthe snap rotation) or circular pattern

    R rectangular array type

P "polar" array type in circular pattern, you must indicate number of items andangle to fill, and whether the objects

    get rotated with the angle

C "circular" array type in a circularpattern, you must indicate anglebetween items, angle to fill, andwhether objects get rotated with theangle

    can be transparent

DIM Takes you out of the drawing editor and

into the semi-automatic dimensioningprogram built into AutoCAD. Will displaya Dim: prompt on the command promptline. To get back to the drawing editorand the Command: prompt, type the key.

DIM1 Same as above, but only allows onedimensioning command to be used, andthen takes you automatically back to thedrawing editor and the Command:prompt.

    DIM

    ALIGNED

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws a linear dimension with thedimension line parallel to theselected dimension origin points. This lets you align a dimensionwith an angled line that is noteither exactly horizontal orvertical.

    DIM

    ANGULAR

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws an arc and calculates theangle between two non-parallellines, and draws the text andarrowheads. Arrowheads are thestandard AutoCAD filledtriangles, regardless of yourdefined Arrow Block.

BASELINE Continues a linear dimension fromthe baseline (the so-called "firstextension line") of the previous orselected dimension. This is notfrequently used in architecturaldimensions. The spacing between

each dimension line is controlledby the AutoCAD variableDIMDLI ("Dimension LineIncrement"), which you should setat 0 normally, but if you use thebaseline command, you shouldreset to 1/8".

    DIM

    CENTER

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws a pair of crossed lines atthe center of a circle or arc on the

    current layer

    DIM

    CONTINUE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Continues a linear dimension fromthe second extension line of theprevious or selected dimension. Itis used to create a so-called"string" of dimensions. This isused quite a bit in architecturaldrawings.

    DIM

    DIAMETER

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws a dimension through thecenter of a circle or arc, calculating the diameter, with oneof the arrow heads located at thepoint on the circle or arc which ispicked.

    DIM

    EXIT

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Exits the dimensioning programand returns from the Dim: promptto the normal Command: prompt

    DIM

    HOMETEXT

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Restores the text of an associativedimension to its default (home)location if you have moved it.

    DIM

    LEADER

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws an a line or series of lineswith an arrow head (commonlycalled a "leader") to point to anobject to notate it. This commandwill also prompt you for the noteat the end of the leader line, but itwill allow only one line of text. Themost useful method of using thiscommand is to simply drawleaders between the object to benotated and text that you create

    with the DTEXT command.

    DIM

    NEWTEXT

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Permits changing text of anassociative dimension withoutexploding it. However, once thetext has been changed, thedimension will no longer beassociative.

    DIM

    OBLIQUE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Adjusts the obliquing angle of alinear associative dimensionsextension lines. Useful indimensioning isometric drawings.

    DIM

    ORDINATE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws the X and Y coordinateswithin a box with a leader lineattached to the point, for a

    selected point. Automaticallycalculates the coordinates.

    DIM

    OVERRIDE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Overrides the dimension variablesettings on a selected dimension.

    DIM Dimensioning sub-command:

Redraws the viewport, just like theregular REDRAW command.

    DIM

    RESTORE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

    Makes a dimension style current

    DIM

    ROTATE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Draws a linear dimension with thedistance measured origin points, but with the actual dimension lineset at a different angle.

    DIM

    SAVE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Saves the currently set dimensionvariables under a dimension stylename for future retrieval throughthe RESTORE command.

    DIM

    STATUS

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Lists all dimension variables withtheir current status.

    DIM

    STYLE

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Switches to a new Text Style forall future dimensions.

    DIM

    TEDIT

    Dimensioning sub-command:

Allows moving text in associativedimensions without having toexplode the dimensions.

    DIM

VPLAYER Sets viewport visibility for new andexisting layers

? Lists layers frozen in a

    selected viewport

    F ("Freeze") Freezes specified

    layers in selected viewports

    T ("Thaw") Thaws specified

    layers in selected viewports

    R ("Reset") Resets specified

    layers to their default visibility

    N ("Newfrz") Creates new layers

that are frozen in all viewports

    V ("Vpvisdflt") Sets the default

    viewport visibility for existinglayers

VPOINT Selects the viewpoint for a 3Dvisualization

    R Selects viewpoint via

    two rotation angles

Selects viewpointvia a graphic compassand axis tripod which

    appears on the screen

    Specifies x, y,and z relative coordinatesof viewpoint

VSLIDE Displays a previously created slide file viewsslide with name of

    "filename.SLD"

*filename preloadsslide which thenext commandVSLIDE will view

WBLOCK Writes selected entities or previouslycreated Block to a drawing file

    writesspecified entities to

    "filename.DWG"

= filename.DWG to becreated is same as theentities included in a

previously defined Blockby the same name

    * writes entire drawing tothe filename.DWG andpurges all unreferencedblocks, layers, linetypes, text and dimensioning

    styles

    writes selectedobjects

XBIND Makes portions of an Xref a permanentpart of your drawing

B ("Block") Makes a block in theXref a permanent part of your

    drawing

D ("Dimstyle") Makes a dimstylein the Xref a permanent part of

    your drawing

L ("Layer") Makes a layer in theXref a permanent part of your

    drawing

LT ("LType") Makes a Ltype inthe Xref a permanent part of

    your drawing

S ("Style") Makes a text style inthe Xref a permanent part ofyour drawing

XREF Allows you to work with other AutoCADdrawings without adding them

A ("Attach") "Attaches" a newXref to the drawing or updates

an Xref that is already attached

B ("Bind") Makes an Xref a

    permanent part of your drawing

    D ("Detach") Removes an Xref

    from your drawing

P ("Path") Allows you to viewand edit the filename path(directory and sub-directory) thatAutoCAD searches when

    loading a particular Xref

    R ("Reload") Updates one or

    more Xrefs at any time

? Lists Xrefs in your drawing andthe drawing associated with

    each one

ZOOM Enlarges or reduces the displaymagnification of the drawing, withoutchanging the actual size of the entities

    can be transparent

    multiplier from

    original magnification

    multiplierfrom current

    magnification

    multiplier ofmagnification relative to

paper space -- used forplotting to get right plotscale in each viewport

A ("All") fills limits of drawing to

    screen

    C ("Center") makes picked point

    the center of the screen

D ("Dynamic") makes anadjustible rectangular lensappear on the screen which iscapable of being made smalleror larger and moved to differentpositions over the drawing andonce set by the user, thedrawing will quickly zoom to thelocation and magnification setfor the lens. This sub-commandis no longer useful because allcomputers have very fast zooms

    naturally now.

E ("Extents") makes the farthestedges of the actual visibledrawing fill up the graphics

    screen

L ("Lower-Left") makes the pointpicked become shoved to the

    lower-left corner of the graphicsscreen

P ("Previous") zooms back towhatever the last zoom, previous to the current zoomwas -- AutoCAD stores about 10of these, so you can walkbackward in zoom magnification

    10 times

V ("Virtual Screen") makes thelargest area available to the

graphics card fill the graphicsscreen -- this varies with thequantity of graphics RAM that

    your graphics card has

W ("Window") asks you to pickthe lower left corner and theupper right corner of a zoomwindow and then fits thatwindow to the graphics screen

3DFACE Draws flat planes in 3D space witheither 3 corners or 4 corners (3 sided or4 sided flat planes). These are used tohide objects behind them in space tocreate the illusion of a solid object.3DFACEs can also be shaded using theSHADE command, in which case theentire plane takes on the color assignedto its edges. Normally (without using theHIDE or SHADE commands, 3DFACEsare transparent, which means thatobjects behind them in space are visiblethrough them, and they appear as"wireframes."

I ("Invisible") this is used bytyping in the letter "I" just beforepicking a corner point for the3DFACE, and it will make theedge of the 3DFACE drawn fromthat point to the next one"Invisible" (that is, it will not beshown as a line on the drawing). This is important when joiningseveral 3DFACEs together tocover a complex, multi-facetedsurface, where you do not wantthe "seams" of the 3DFACEs toshow in the final drawing. Thevisibility of edges of 3DFACEscan further be turned on or offby the AutoCAD variable"SPLFRAME." WhenSPLFRAME is set to 1 ("on"),both edges which have beenmade "Invisible" as well asnormal, visible edges are shownon the drawing. WhenSPLFRAME is set to 0 ("off"),Invisible edges are not shown. The purpose of sometimeswanting to see invisible edges is

3DMESH Draws a 3D polygon mesh by specifyingits size, in terms of the number of facesin each direction (called M and Ndirections), and the location in 3D spaceof each vertex (the corner of a face) inthe mesh.

3DPOLY Creates a 3D polyline C Closes the polyline back to
