EditorialWHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

by Janny Brizius

The holidays, Thanksgivng and Christmas, are upon us! Surely a joyous timefor most, and a time of celebration – celebration of what? Do we even think about it?

Given the state of the the world these days, perhaps it would be good toremember the first Thanksgiving. Today, we are confused by a totally different wayof life by the people of the Middle East, and I guess they are as confused as we are.“Why do they think that way? They’re barbarians!”And so it was, also, with the Pilgrims and the NativeAmericans... much misunderstanding and fear – yeton one day they came together, shared a meal andlearned from one another!

Way before that, though, in a cave inBethlehem, A baby was born. It turned out he was not an ordinary baby, but indeedone who would perhaps save this cruel world from itself! As we gather together thisThanksgiving and Christmas may we remember what it’s all about.

The babe gave us just one comandment; “Love One Another” Yes, That’swhat it’s all about.

YES! CHRISTMAS AT THE CABIN IS NOW OPEN!

Some folks say they haven’t had their Christmas till they’ve had a visit toChristmas at the Cabin. How this phenomenon has happened is a mystery to some, but not to folks who have been to the rustic log cabin Christmas shop on Cave Roadnear Bainbridge. One step inside the door and folks are amazed at the array ofbeautiful Christmas decorations and gifts that fill the cabin to the rafters!

The Cabin opened October 16th, and in one day, one of the artisans had toreplenish his wares! (Fortunately this particular artisan just lives “up the road,” soit was easy for him to run some new items down to the cabin). However, about 30artisans from across the USA send their special hand-crafted creations for JannyBrizius to sell in her very special holiday shop. All are of high quality, and Jannywill not accept an artisan if she believes they have priced their crafts tooexpensively, so folks always know that at Christmas at the Cabin they can find reallyunique gifts and decorations at reasonable prices..

The Cabin is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am till 5pm and onSundays from 1pm till 5pm. On Thanksgiving Day there are special evening hoursof 4pm till 9pm. (The cabin is especially pretty after dark, and on that eveningyou’ll follow a torch-lit driveway all the way up to the Cabin). However, you’llprobably not want to wait till Thanksgiving for your first visit, as many of thecreations are one of a kind!

If you’ve not been to the Cabin, you will find it just off of US Route 50 on theCave Road, midway between Hillsboro and Chillicothe, and four miles west ofBainbridge. Call (937) 304-0818 for specific directions from your neck of thewoods or more information. A visit to the web page may also be of help to you; it’sat www.magicwaterstheatre.com

FOLKS MAKE THINGS HAPPEN

Folks meet Steve Anderson, a local boy made good!Everyone from around Bainbridge knows his father, DaveAnderson, who has been a barber in town forever. Thisis an excerpt from Steve's new book "1979" which is acharming collection of short stories. I hope you like thistaste of his writings because he may just continue withmore in future issues of the Happenings! Steve’s bookmay be the perfect Christmas gift for someone on your list. The following is an excerpt from the short story ‘Oil Wells’.

OIL WELLS

The old gray and red tractor chugged to life and its stack spewed smoke rings intothe air until Clarence pushed the choke back in. The boys climbed on behind itsmetal seat and grabbed hold of the tractor’s big rounded fenders. Clarence pulledthe throttle down and the tractor crawled up out of its mud. This was the part Lukealways liked the most, the start of the ride. Something exciting always seemed tohappen and he was anxious to be on their way. Last summer Clarence pulled acopperhead snake by its tail out of a bush while the boys chased it and threw rocks.Another time, the tractor had gotten stuck in a low spot and they had to worktogether to free it from its sticky bottom, getting covered in mud in the process.Luke had alwaysassumed these events were an everyday occurrence in the valleyand that life was just more adventurous at his grandparents’ farm. It wasn’t untilyears later that he realized it was Clarence who had created these shared momentsfor Luke and his cousins. When you were young you thought things happened andthat was it, not knowing how memories worked. But Clarence knew. He knew thatthe things you did every day were important because they lived forever, not only inyour memory, but in everyone you touched.

The tractor crossed the submarine bridge over French Creek and headed up SchultzFork toward where the holler narrowed into a cut and the trickle wells sat. Gettingthe oil out of these wells was like turning a paint can upside down to get its lastremaining drips. Because most of the oil had already been taken from the hills, thetrickle wells were slow to fill back up, so Clarence only needed to pump them onceevery couple of days.

They followed the stream for a ways before they turned off the red dirt road andonto a rutted two-track lane that angled up a hillside into the woods. They couldlook over and see that they still followed the creek and soon merged back downwith it. The hillside steepened as they came to a rock outcropping everyone calledAlum Caves. Luke remembered other times they’d gone this way and Clarence had

stopped to let them go swimming in the pools below the cliffs. It was at thisswimming hole where Luke and his cousins had dared each other to see who couldchug the most of the warm beer they’d found behind the tractor’s seat whileClarence slept under a tree. Luke couldn’t remember who won, but did rememberhis Grandma June scolding Clarence when she smelled beer on their breath oncethey got back home. It was also near the cave’s cliffs where Clarence had taughtLuke how to take a crap in the woods, something crucial to know if you plannedon spending any amount of time outdoors. “Just go over there and get a leaf,” he’dsaid, and pointed to some bushes off the side of the road. Luke wasn’t the only oneClarence had helped out in this particular way. Another time when one of Luke’sgirl cousins came along and had to go, Luke had seen his grandpa take his penknifeand cut the tail off his old faded shirt and hand it to his granddaughter.

The tractor’s exhaust made the little rain flap, flop up and down, and the engine’spopping sound grew louder as it echoed through the narrow holler. The dirt trackcontinued to follow the stream and along the bank a salt lick oozed out of a crackin a rock wall. Clarence said he’d see a bear down there every once in a while, butit would always run off when the clanking tractor came too close. The road angledup again to where the hillside flattened out onto a little bluff above the creek andthe oil well came into view.

“I’m first!” Eddie shouted, and jumped off the rear of the tractor. He ran ahead tograb hold of an old rope that hung down out of a tree that sat on the edge of asteep embankment above the creek. “Waaa-hooooo.” Eddie’s rebel yell echoed upthe holler as he swung out over an expanse of empty air. The creek’s water level wasa little too low to let go of the rope, so he hung on for the fun ride of it just the same.

Clarence pulled the tractor up next to the dilapidated old shack and cut the engine, and the silence echoed through the woods. An oil derrick sat off to the side of theshack that Clarence had converted into the well’s pumpjack. Normally they breakdown a derrick once oil is found and move the rig to the next well to be drilled.Since Clarence’s well was the last to be worked in the surrounding hills, theydecided it wasn’t worth the expense and simply left the derrick where it stood.

“You want some?” Mike asked Luke as he stuffed a wad of chew from his MailPouch bag into the side of his cheek.

“Naaaw,” Luke said. He wanted to say yes, but he had tried the stuff before and itonly made him sick when he accidentally swallowed some of the juice.

“Let’s go see if it’ll start,” Clarence said, and ducked inside the leaning building.Mike trailed in behind him, but Luke stayed to watch Eddie swing out over the creekagain. He thought about joining him until the banging sounds inside the shack drewhim over to the doorway’s edge. “Gotta make sure it don’t dry out,” Clarence said

to Luke when he noticed him standing there, then scooped up another handful ofgrease to work into a gear cog’s metal teeth.

The old shack smelled of oil and the dirt floor was slick with hard packed mud thatnever dried. The pump’s motor looked like an old train engine in that it had a bigmetal spoked wheel. An eight-inch wide canvas strap looped around the giant trainwheel and trailed off to spin a set of grease blackened gears fifteen feet away.

Clarence fired up the pump’s engine using a car battery he’d taken off the tractor, and the ancient machine roared to life. It was even louder than the tractor and theyhad to yell to be heard above its clatter. Clarence released the hand clutch and thesix-foot metal train wheel started to spin. The canvas strap grew taut and spun offthrough a maze of metal gears that spun lesser gears ‘til it all shakily moved inunison.

“Let’s go,” Clarence shouted above the racket, and took off at a fast gait to followa cable that stretched and pulled at something on the other side of the old tin shackwall. Luke and his cousin lingered behind to watch the spinning belt as it turned thegrease-blackened clogs. He never understood how it all worked, but knew the up-and-down motion of the oil well’s pumpjack was somehow tied to the machine inthe shack.

The boys caught up with Clarence under the derrick where he sat watching thecrude oil flow through an uncapped elbow pipe. It gurgled as it made its waydownhill to a giant tank that sat at the edge of a field across from the church andits swinging bridge. The boys joined him and sat on the ground next to the pipeand the sounds of the flowing oil. Luke always imagined that one day he wouldcome back to this valley to stay, to become part of the culture and learn all he couldfrom his grandfather’s life spent working in these hills.

The crude oil smelled sweet like decay and tasted salty like the ocean and Clarencewould remind them of the salt lick they saw earlier. “If you find one you usually findthe other,” he’d say. Other times if it was hot and the gnats were bothering him,he’d dip his two fingers into the pipe’s opening then pull them out and rub the purecrude oil onto his bald head. “Keeps the bugs away,” he’d say. When Luke wasolder and thought back on his times spent in the West Virginia hills, these were thememories he always thought of.

20TH CENTURY CLUB AT THE CABIN!

Note: the following report and the photo below appeared on Ron Coffey’swebsite, www.coffeyweb.com, after Ron and his wife visited The Cabin inDecember 2013.

Boonie and Janny Brizius hosted a recent meeting of the 20th Century Club, allowing members to see the lovely cabin along Cave Road filled with crafts andunique gift items. I snapped this photo using the panorama feature on my iPhone, which slightly distorts but allows the creation of some interesting shots. If you arestill seeking that special something for a special someone on your Christmas list,Christmas at the Cabin is a great place to find it. While you’re there, Janny couldtell you some very interesting stories about the cabin that has been in the family foryears.

I’ll also give a shout-out to the 20th Century Club, a nice group of people fromthe Greenfield area who get together occasionally for a lovely dinner, some relaxedsocial time and a program. I only became a member in the 21st century, but nowwish I had joined earlier!
