Public Swimming Pool Backwash Recycling
The Average Olympic size swimming pool can use 100,000
litres of water per week in Backwash operations
water filteraustralian
There are approximately 2000 Olympic size swimming pools in Australia which would use 200,000,000 litres of water
per week in Backwash operations
water filteraustralian
Therefore in one year these 2000 Olympic size
swimming pools would use 10,400,000,000 ltrs
10.4 Gigalitres

Apart from the Environmental necessity of not wasting Water –
There are very good economical advantages
1. It is expensive to get rid of the dirty backwash water either to sewer or having it removed from site.
2. It is expensive to replace the water lost during backwash operations.

• Public Swimming Pool Backwash Recycling• Some indicative costs1. A large Public pool can use up to 120,000 litres of water per week
in backwash operations.*2. The cost of replacing this water is up to $25,000.00* per annum3. The portion of the discharge levy for sending this water to sewer
is $12,000.00 per annum4. The cost of carting the water away can also be considerable5. Additional to these costs are the disposal costs of sludge
removal. up to $8,000.00* per annum• Total cost for not recycling this water could be up to $50,000.00
per year • Or on a weekly basis approx. $1000.00

HOW?
Use an AWF TRITON Recycling Plant

Backwash water is pumped into the main settling Tank
water filteraustralian
Chlorine Dosing Pump adds the correct amount of Bactericide to prevent algae
growth in the settling tank
water filteraustralian
The water in the settling tank is left for a predetermined time for the contaminants to settle
The settled water is then drawn off and pumped into the main AquaZEL media filter
water filteraustralian
The water then passes through the Ultra Filter Membranes
water filteraustralian
The next stage is Activated Carbon Filtration to remove the hidden Contaminants such as Volatile Organic Compounds
water filteraustralian
The next stage is to add chlorine to the water to enable a residual to be tested prior to returning the bulk of the Backwash
Water to the pool for reuse.
water filteraustralian
The Backwash Water is then disinfected using Ultra Violet to ensure absolute bacterial control prior to returning the water to
the pool for reuse

A Reverse Osmosis unit can be provided as an optional extra to allow a side stream of treated water to lower TDS in the final
water returned to the pool if required.

The Flow control valve can be adjusted to control the amount of water sent through the RO Unit as a side stream.
The flow meter gives the indicated rate through the RO

At calculated intervals (determined for each system depending on volumes etc), the Main media tank is backwashed and the waste is pumped into the sludge pit. The water used for backwashing is taken from a clean water connection

At calculated intervals (determined for each system depending on volumes etc.) the sludge in the bottom of the settling tank is pumped into the sludge pit via a chlorine neutraliser, aerated and then treated with microbes.

Sub Soil Irrigation
The Treated sludge which after about four days is the consistency of dirty water can be pumped through sub surface irrigation for lawns or garden beds
