~ l,;,;JJ/,,,J FROM THE COMMODORE

Along with the many successful AYC events already held this year, we have continuing efforts from many of our members who volunteer their time for the on-going projects at the club. In addition to those projects and people I recognized in the last Telltale, I'd 1 ike to tell you about some more of these projects and the people who are making them happen.

The Membership Committee, under the guidance of Claude Wei les, is doing an excel lent job. Membership is increasing again. And at the recommendation of the Membership Committee the Board has approved a change in the "Fees, Dues, and Assessments'' section of the handbook. This new ruling states that AYC will waive all initiation fees for adult children of active members with the exception of the application fee currently in force. Other membership standards and probationary requirements remain unchanged. We hope this will make it easier for these young people to continue their association with AYC when they no longer qualify as part of their parents' family membership.

Bill Records, this year's historian, has been taking some great pictures -- a busman's holiday for Bill who makes photography his business. Most of the professional photographs you . see out at the club are examples of Bill's expertise.

An annual safety inspection done by Dave Brenner. Chairman of our Safety Committee, resulted in some great suggestions to enhance the safety at AYC. Some changes have already been made, and we're working on the rest of them as quickly as possible.

Shirley Slaughter, who is responsible for Series trophies this year, has been hard at work since the beginning of the year. Her trophies will also include crew trophies for the first time. This was Shirley's idea , and the coozies were ordered long before the rumors about forming a "crew union" began circulating.

Tim Erwin and Rod Ethridge, who make up our Insurance Committee, are evaluating our risks and are making suggestions on how to manage those risks at the lowest cost. We appreciate all their help with this tough assignment.

And where would we be without our 16 Fleet Captains who represent all the fleets in our club. Their responsibilities include writing articles for the Telltale and getting race committee volunteers together for regattas (at the request of the PRC) and when it's their turn to risk life, limb, and reputation running race committee during a series race.

The success of the Austin Yacht Club is largely due to people like these -- and to all of you who vo lunteer your time and energy for al 1 sorts of tas~s. A special thanks to al 1 of you. I'm looking forward to working with you on future projects.

Terry Meyers

Although was unable to attend this year's Opening Day Ceremonies on March 12. I heard nothing but good reports about the success of our first social event for 1989. With Vfckf Bremer chairing the event. I had no doubts about the event's success! But Vicki credits that success to lots of folks Shfrley Slaughter who made the beautiful fresh flower arrangement for the buffet table and boutonnieres/corsages for the Board members as well as help make the tuna sandwiches for serving; Claudfa Foster and Lauren (our expert pickle arranger!) who helped put together the 180 tuna croissants; Martie, Howard and Chad Shirey who helped with sandwiches and serving (with Chad as our official food taster and tester and retester!); Kathryn and Carl Bryn who helped prepare the food; Pat and Vic Manning who prepared all those delicious (hiccough!) drinks; Kathy and Bob Pf llmore who put up the festive decorations with the help of Claudia Hyland and Dennis Hyland; Mary Lynn Painton who recruited the Capital City Highlander Pipe Band and Camp Mabry Color Guards and, last but not least, Jack Bremer who helped Vicki with all those tasks for which no one else was available. Thanks for a great j ob Vfckf and crew.

The Warm-Up Series Buffet on April 23, organized and prepared by our great chef James Pfnno. served about 130 hungry folks . That's the g ood news. The bad news is that James moved to New York to be with his lady love who is rumored to become Mrs. Pinna sometime in September . We'll miss James and all the hard work he has done for our club the past few years .

Our next scheduled social event will be the Spring Series Buffet on June 18 chaired by Lanelle Montgomery. IMPORTANT : Remember to make yo ur reservations which are important for planning purposes. (For the Warm-Up Series Buffet only 40 people made reservations; 130 people were served. If James had planned on 40 people coming, there would've been lots of hungry folks.) Watch for the Sp r ing Series Buffet notice as the time gets closer. Lanelle will have some tas ty surprises f o r all of us!

See you o n t h e l a ke.

SAILING AS A BUSINESS

The Austin Chamber of Commerce, via its Economic Development Division, has created a Sports & Leisure Committee. This Committee is in its 2nd year of operation and has undertaken numerous activities which promote various sports that bring revenue into Austin.

This year they have set about the specific tasks of: serving as a clearinghouse and advocate for major regional and national sporting events in Austin, recruiting and retaining major sporting events and infrastructure that will boost Austin's economy as well as the city's "sports resume," and are serving as a resource group for the "Sports Foundation Feasibility Committee" (SFFC).

The SFFC relates to an effort to establish a sports foundation in Austin that will create a mechanism by which our city might compete with other cities for these various major sports activities such as national championships, Olympic trials, etc.

Sailing should have representation on the Sports and Leisure Committee. They meet once a month. Ir there is a sailor among our members who has the time and interest to serve on this committee as our sport's representative, please contact me, (Kathy Pillmore, 450-1512) and I will get you plugged in at the Chamber.

CELEBRITIES AMONG US •••

Movie fans will recognize Vfckf Bremer in an upcoming episode of "Gideon Oliver" scheduled for a mid-May showing on ABC Monday Nite Mystery Movie series.

Vicki was asked to dress the role of a farmer's wife out drinking and dancing in a small Texas town bar. The filming took place at the Coupland Inn in Coupland. She was one of about 40 extras chosen from a field of 600 hopefuls. Vicki hopes her cameo role doesn't end up on the cutting room floor after spending 12 hours shooting for a minute and a half of air time. Her '70 Mustang was also spotted by the director and some street scenes were shot with it in the background.

Vicki may or may not achieve immortality with her debut, but her Mustang is a classic.

And so is her husband, Jack! Imagine 35 years with one company! Whew .•• some or us are lucky to get 35 days with one company!! Jack will end that longstanding relationship with Honeywell as their MCC liaison June 30. Then he and the Mrs. will head for the Virgin Islands where they'll R & R for two months. What will we do without Vicki for two months???

CAROLINE HOWARD as remembered by Teri Nelms •••.. •• • • • • •••

have observed, with great sadness, the passing of Carpl ine Howard from the shores and waters of Lake Travis and the Austin Yacht Club. She was a dear friend and a true champion to all of us who knew her. The challenges of competitive sailing had captured her heart, and she was an inspiration to anyone who sailed either with her or against her. She was awarded our Women's Corinthian Sailing Trophy at the 1988 Annual Banquet, but was in the hospital and unable to rece i ve it until she retur ned home . It was her pro udest possission and resided on the mantle

of the fireplace in her living room and then on the dresser in her bedroom where she could easier enjoy it and ''show it off" to the many friends and visitors she had during her last weeks with us.

Caroline's sensitivity. kindness. enthusiasm and constant laughter filled her life and served as a constant source of love and compassion to her family and companions.

Caroline was one of our 'First "token" women to serve on the Board of Directors and was often in and out of the clubhouse or office on the way down to STARSHINE. her beloved Columbia 9.6. The Howards always raced Turnback Canyon and other regattas that would give the good old boat a chance to show her stuff on distance runs. While she occasionally sailed a series race. the boat was not really competitive on a small' course. But Caroline was. When she couldn't be out there racing. she was still behind the wheel ror some serious cruising. Bill has admitted that Caroline was the Skipper in charge in either case.

Caroline was a sailor. an ice skater. a snow skiier. a go-er and a do-er who loved wildflowers. picnics. the lake where she lived and the dozens of "best friends" who shared her life with her. Her memorial service paid tribute to her with comments made by four of the people who knew her best. each of whom could not say enough in admiration. She had requested that arter the service her 'Friends enjoy a picnic in celebration of her life -- which we did with bagpipes, wildflowers and champagne. In lieu or 'Flowers, she has requested that donations be made to:

St. Matthews Episcopal Church 8134 Mesa Austin, TX 78759

ror the construction or an inrant cry room where mothers stil 1 attend services with young children. This was a project or hers that will fill a need in the church that attended regularly and supported with her time and caring.

Caroline's family is extremely grateful to al 1 those who sent her flowers and cards and who phoned her and visited her both in the hospital and at home during her trying illness. She knew her time was limited but continued to plan her days as if there would be no end -- and was most recently concerned with who she could line up for a crew for Bill ror Turnback.

BAGPIPE WARS (by Teri Nelms): When Bi 11 Howard asked Pete Shough to help him by contacting the Highland Bagpipers ror the Memorial Serive, Pete was met with a belligerent secretary with no information. Bill then called me and asked me to please help bail them out. I managed to secure the pipers in time because I knew who would know what I did not know. My thanks to Vicki Bremer and Kathy Pillmore who bailed me out and round the pipers.

AYC MEMBERS PULL TOGETHER IN SPIRIT OF COOPERATION

Thanks to everyone who attended the March Board meeting and contributed to the approval of the children's play area. This was a decision of great importance to a large number of members -- and potential future members! The final result reflected the spirit of cooperation and concern for our club's environment.

The playground went through many changes from the original concept presented to the Board at the February meeting. The design approved by the Board is smaller, approximately 25 feet across, three feet high, octagonal, and is constructed of wood rather than the original chain link/wood combination. The location under the oak tree near the pool filter does not obstruct the view of the lake and "floating" posts will not damage the root bed. In addition, a small house will be constructed to cover the filter and shrubbery will be planted. "Little Tyke" playscape toys will be provided to maintain the children's interest. The swing and jungle gym from the upper playground will be relocated and the mer-ry-go-round will be removed. Construction will be under the supervision of Tommy Kozlowski. Buildings and Grounds Commander, and Richard Facial with volunteer workers and should be under construction by the time this Telltale is published.

The approved design costs a bit more than the original which used donated material. AYC is providing $200 while fundraising activities including Sunday food sales and dollar donations from members will take care of the estimated $1,000 total cost. Any dollar donations would be greatly appreciated (!!!) and anyone interested in helping with the construction should call Claudia Foster at 331-6222 or Richard Facial at 441-6108.

WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!

The Buildings and Grounds Committee needs volunteers who are willing to help water our new plants. We have: (1) planted three smal 1 Burr oak trees (as a future guard against the threat of oak decline), (2) planted five oleander shrubs on the north side of the bathhouse, and (3) filled our barrels and flower bed with blooming plants.

We need volunteers who will these plants for one month. (Home) or 471-1273 (Work) if like to add your name to our

* FLEET TALK * KEEL A by Russell Painton

If I'm going to have a longer article than a few pages. in the future I'm going to have to be advised earlier about the deadline! On the other hand, maybe someone is trying to tell me something.

Anyway. won't dwell on the recent race results themselves since they're found elsewhere. On the other hand, some interesting things have happened to the loons who race with me in A-Fleet.

For example. after the Spring Regatta was over, Bernstein ended up with 2 mainsails, neither one of which fit. And David wasn't even there. I wonder what Gail told him when he got back in town. Seems that the 30 knot breeze that afternoon was too much for the Kevlar main, and it decided to divide, much like an amoeba. Fortunately, Kevlar is much like a piece of tin, and you simply weld it back together, which is what Reinhart did, and they are back in business, good as new.

In the meantime, Tesch, having won the thing, volunteered his wife for the obligatory toss in the pool. Neat. On the other hand, we all would much rather handle Carol. Only trouble is, she puts up more of a fight than Rapid Robert who is only worried about getting his wallet wet.

Since have been down on the big salt pond racing TORC, I don't have any stories about the Spring Series other than to say that I think most of AFleet is in Galveston this Spring doing the same thing as yours truly, so there may not

17

have been one. Steve Vaughan has OBSESSION down there along with every Olson 30 skipper in the club. I, along with half the J-29 fleet, am crewing with "A alum" Rick Smith on his J-36. We have not seen, in total, wind shifts which, when added together, equal what we get here in one shift, but when the boats get a couple of miles apart on the weather leg. a three degree shift means a couple hundred yards!

One thing you notice on the coast is that those guys can really make J-29s and 0-30s go to weather! What they do is to load the maximum number of bfg people allowed on the boat (9) and hold it flat! After 18 miles of racing, it is not unusual to have the lead J-29s within seconds of the J-36, boat for boat. I know I can't do that here! By the way, those guys have just about quit using runners on the fractional rigs.

For those of you who would like to practice your tactics and also learn what makes a boat go, and if you own or have access to an IBM compatible PC, you should get (for $50) a program called the Sailing Simulator by Sailtech which is ~ couple of Thistle sailors out of the Midwest. You will see it advertised in Sail magazine. You can race against 2-15 other boats, all of which are of various degrees of skill, and you can either adjust the sails yourself o r have the computer do it for you. You have to pick wind shifts and everything. It is worth the money and is very realistic. Check it out. If you want to see the program demonstrated.

Page 19: AUSTIN · YACHT · C lU B · austin yacht club 5906 beacon drive lake travis a y c o f f i c e r s commodore-----terry meyers vice-commodore-----gail bernstein

ask me. I make no money off this, believe me.

Word is that the recent combined J-24/LTCA cruise was very well attended with about 25 boats there. All keel sailors should plan on the next one since Records is doing his famous fajita stuff. After a few tequilas anythfng tastes good, even Bill's fajitas. We hope to see you there.

The next big deal is the Turnback (properly spelled Turnrack) race "down the ditch" to the biggest party this side of Alaska. Get your wallets out (of course we need a new Kevlar) and stock up on sun screen. Remember, this is always the weekend when the drought breaks. About the time dinner is being served, as I recal I. For once I'm going to try to find Nelms' boat since it has standing headroom (no pun intended) and wi II be a good place to wait out the rain.

Well, enough stuff. Tell me some printable "A" news for our next article and I promise to edit it. How about some news about the sailing in San Francisco, Carol?!

KEELB by Bob Goldsmith

B-Fleet has long been plagued by the existence of the Gang of Four -- namely Claude Welles, Frank Riha, Mike Chambers and Tom Lott -- who have conspired together to win an unreasonable share of the trophies. Tom Lott having failed to put in an appearance thus far this year, B-Fleet's other sailors were just beginning to speculate that a Gang of Three was at least a marginal improvement when a new gang member, Vern Harris, appeared on the scene. The Warm-Up Series concluded with, surprise, 1st going to Claude Welles, 2nd to Frank Riha, and 3rd to Vern Harris who was racing his Hunter 26.5 for the first time in a series. Despite being official scorekeeper for the series, Mike Chambers was unable to do better than 4th. Mike attributed the facts

this situation to that (a) his wife

Bonnie, in partial misdemeanors, has hidden his copy of "How to Win by Creative Scorekeeping" and (b) in the interest of science, Mike conducted several experiments during the races to determine if 100-foot cliffs have wind shadows (he reports that they do). Mike is writing a scholarly treatise on the subject which will be published in September by the Texas A&M University Press. Also sailing hard were Erhard Sudermann and Tom Blair.

A number of 8-Fleet sailors participated in the Spring Regatta. Upholding the 8-Fleet tradition of dental sailing excellence and taking advantage of one of those rare occasions when the squirrels have not eaten holes in his mainsail, Barry Bowden was first in the spinnaker class in his J-30.

Vern Harris managed a despite the fact that "spinnaker" appeared to either a wel 1-used Sunfish

or a medium sized beach umbrella. In the non-spinnaker class. sometimes 8-Fleet sailor Greg Porter helmed non-member Bill Byrum's Santana 525 to 2nd while your humble correspondent was able to eke out a 3rd in our Hunter 28.5. Tom Blair also sailed with determination but was disqualified as a result of a. shall we say. regrettable protest. The protest was based on Tom's adding crew members for the lighter air race on Sunday and the jury was apparently puzzled. but not swayed, by Tom's contention that this actually slowed his boat down. We have informed Tom that inflatable crew members are available from the B-Fleet Commissary. or. if he prefers a more. ahem. detailed version, downtown at Forbidden Fruit.

Several 8-Fleet sailors put on a very strong showing on 4/30 in the Lake Travis Hunter Fleet's Spinnaker's II Regatta. Tom Blair took time off from his usual pasttime of trying to get the rating raised on his Hunter 28.5 to accept a lst place trophy in the 15 boat non-spinnaker class while we managed to overcome a crew of mutinous teenagers to finish 2nd. Vern Harris finished 2nd in the spinnaker class (an accomplishment in no way diminished by the fact that this class contained only 3 boats) while race organizer and potential 8-Fleet sailor Don Canada took 1st in the spinnaker class.

KEELC THE COMPLETE C-FLEET

by Lauren Vicknair

Spring 1989 has been extremely windy but overal 1 has provided excellent sailing weather on Lake Travis. The Warm-Up Series had a large C-Fleet turn out. (Results are recorded elsewhere in the Telltale.)

The Spring Regatta was "wild and wooly" according to Bill Records who starboarded through Jim Baker's jib as Jim readjusted Bill's bow pulpit. Meanwhile, Eddie smoked the fleet in both races on Sat. Threadgills catered a scrumptious meal and most sailors were too tired to dance to the live music as Sunday's race loomed ahead. (Final results are recorded elsewhere.)

While dishing out clam chowder, ham and swiss sandwiches and tomato chutney. JAMES PINNO explained that his move to New York involves wedding plans. But he promises to come back to AYC at least once a year to visit.

Please note that in the Keel Fleet Championship standings (listed elsewhere in the Telltale). 3 C-Fleeters are in the ~op 10 BILL RECORDS #1. JIM DEETER #4 and EDDIE CALOGERO #6. Great showing guys!

THE THRILL OF VICTORY .... .... THE AGONY OF 0-FLEET!!

by Perry Weller

The 1989 Series Racing season began with Opening Day Ceremonies in perfect Spring weather. Thanks to Vicki Bremer and her helpers who made this event so enjoyable for all of us. BOB and KATHY PILLMORE wasted no time in sailing to 1st place in the 1st race of the Warm-Up Series with HAL HAYDEN right on their heels. Congratulations to the Centerboard Fleet in receiving the Excellence in Race Management award for their performance on this race.

TOM CUMMINGS had some excitement on the 2nd race when his foredeck man decided to go swimming during a spinnaker j i be. He apparently challenged the chute to a tug-of-war and lost. Gusty northeasterly winds during the 3rd race, combined with a new bottom job helped DAVE BOERNER correct over the PILLMORE team for 1st. I demonstrated spinnaker broaching sur vival tactics for my new crew, at the other end of the scale.

Warm-Up Series trophy winner s are 1 isted elsewhere in the Telltale. Shirley Slaughter felt sor ry for us and gave out 3 trophies even though we only had a 4-boat average. Thanks Shirley! We'll try to do better next series. If we don't keep at least our 5 - boat average, the "0" in 0-Fleet may stand for "Deceased."

While we were all chasing each other around the lake, HAL HAYDEN was crewing on a Hinckley 49 being delivered from St. Thomas to Miami. He brushed up on celestial navigation during the 1,000 mile trip with stops in Providenciales in

the Caicos Islands and Bimini. Bet he can find his way to Turnback after all that.

Thanks to everyone who helped with race committee on race #5 of the Warm-Up Series. 0-Fleet traded with the Ensigns for Nov. 5 so they could get two more races in before their upcoming Regionals. Please update your schedule to show we will be racing on Nov. 5 And while you have your schedule out. note that we have duty again on June 11. I wil 1 be getting back to you with more deta i 1 s .

Which reminds me LARRY RATLIFF oF 0-Fleet party fame has some bad news For us. How was he to know that Miller Lite would pick September 2. 1989 for their big Special Olympics benefit. Not wanting to draw attendance away from so worthy an event. Larry has postponed his party to a later date. He will be getting back to us with more detai 1 s.

PERRY'S SURVIVAL TACTICS FOR NEW CREW ...•.. . .. , .

by Greg Schertz

(EDITOR'S NOTE: Greg wins this month's Telltale award for his article having traveled the furthest -- all the way from Atlanta. GA!! And Greg beat the deadline too!! Take note you procrastinators.)

J-22 CIRCUIT STOP -- CHANDLER'S LANDING

While some of our J-22 fleet was at the AYC Opening Day Ceremonies. a couple oF the local boats made a trek up to Dallas. Chandler's Landing Yacht Club hosted the first of seven 1989 J-22 Circuit Regattas on March 11-12 at Lake Ray Hubbard. Thirty boats competed in what turned out to be a great weekend for racing.

TERRY SCHERTZ. with Kelly Gough and myself crewing. started strong with a 1st in the first race. MARK RYLANDER came on strong as the regatta went on. He had Carol, Heidi, Thomas. and John Bartlett crewing. Neither team could hold off the consistent sailing al 1 weekend by Kelson Elam and crew. Kelson sailed a great series and won the regatta.

It wasn't al 1 that bad for the AYC boats though. Mark pushed Kelson al 1 the way and ended 2nd overall. Terry followed right behind and finished 3rd overall. 1st and 2nd might have been better, but 2nd and 3rd ain't bad!!

by Phil Spletter

Since the last Telltale, J-24 fleet 21 has been very active. There were 5 major events the AYC J-24 Texas Circuit Stop. the AYC Warm-Up Series, the Spring Regatta and on the same weekend the fleet had a social event in conjunction with the LTCA, and the fifth stop of the J-24 Texas Circuit Regatta was held at Chandler's Landing Yacht Club on Lake Ray Hubbard. There was strong participation in all of these events. It sure is easy to tell that winter is Jong gone!!

Our fleet did a superb job of planning for al 1 contingencies possible for the AYC Circuit stop that was held March 18-19. Unfortunately. the only one that could not be covered, the wind, bit us. Twelve local boats -- Thunderstar. mr. happy. PSYCHO, Grands lam, Superman, Garrison's Tangerine Machine. Bon Temps, Jackpot. WindShift, Chapter XI and Kevin Selfridge entered the regatta.

In addition. some folks from the frozen tundra of Minnesota and the Wayzata Yacht Club on Lake Minnetonka sailed Double Trouble. A total of 43 boats entered the regatta. For the entire weekend, only one race was sailed and that didn't get started until after 5 p.m. on Sat. In a moderate breeze from an unusual direction that requires playing chicken with the bluff on the back side of Windy Point. two locals Thunderstar and mr. happy dueled with Thunderstar coming out on top. Team PSYCHO took si x th and Grandslarn placed 10th . The finishes for the one race stood for the entire regatta but unfortunately. since at l east 3 races are required, the regatta will not

22

count in the overall standings for the '88-89 J-24 Texas Circuit. But don't we'll get another October 21-22 when AYC the first regatta of the '90 Circuit.

worry, chance hosts

'89-

A total of 10 boats sailed the Warm-Up Series. (Results of all finishers are listed elsewhere in the Telltale.) Superman won the perfect attendance award as well as the series. Thunderstar, making an unusual homestand, took 2nd and WindShift placed 3r~.

In stark contrast to the AYC Circuit stop, the Spring Regatta had plenty of wind. Four boats -- WindShift, Double Trouble. Jalapeno and Pachuco -- sailed in Keel B fleet along with a (believe it or not!) J-30. The J-24s survived the gearbuster conditions and the change to daylight savings time with WindShift taking a 2nd and Double Trouble placing 3rd.

The weekend of April 21-22 was very busy for the fleet. S i x boats headed to Lake Ray Hubbard while Running on Empty took a full load to the Ca j un cruise with LTCA. The fare included real Boudin sausage. red beans and rice as well as a keg of Shiner Bach courtesy of the J-24 fleet. Robbie Nelson is planning another social event in the near future so stay tuned!

Like the Spring Regatta, the Chandler's Landing Circuit stop also had an abundance of wind which, coupled with a 57 boat fleet, made for exciting racing. PSYCHO, Thunderstar, mr. happy, WindShift. Grandslam and Garrison's boat with a new

bottom. new sails AND a new spare tire all made the trip. Planing on reaches was common and mark roundings were equally stimulating. For example, in the last race the weather mark was shifted and most of the fleet approached it on port tack. Jim Brady, the midwinter's champion, took top honors. Thunderstar was 3rd beating the boys from North Sails with Olympic medalist John Kostecki on board. Our Olympian on Grandslam took 5th and mr. happy placed 7th. Team PSYCHO put together a superb last race to move up to 11th.

For the first five stops of the eight regatta circuit (not including throw-outs). mr. happy is in third. Thunderstar is in fourth, and PSYCHO is in seventh.

May May The first of May Topless sailing Starts today.

What a month for fleet 69! We have had everything from heavy weather hard driving competition to genteel and elegant social cruis i ng. Let's begin with the Warm-Up Series. (Final results are listed elsewhere in this Telltale.) The fleet had a total of IO boats participating with a fleet average of 8 boats per race. The Warm-Up Series was consistently breezy from start to finish resulting in a good shakedown for everyone's boat. There were two noteworthy items from the last series race. First of al l , Howard (Sandbagging) Shirey, after months of meticulous bottom job work, managed to b l ow almost everyone's doors off. On top of this his crew Martie sailed with one l eg in a cast recovering from a "cruising" accident. Also during the final series race Heather Morack sustained a bank to the head during the course of the race. I cal l ed Bi l l and Heather later that week to see if Heather was OK and Bill informed me that she sustained no serious damage. They apparently had to leave early because of social obligations.

In April, F l eet 69's monthly cruise was a wine and cheese cruise to Long's Canyon. Racing and cruising members gathered for an evening of wine, cheese, fresh fruit. fresh bread, and good company. Next month's cruise has been scheduled for May 20. Fleet 69 members should receive a notice in the mail soon.

Catalina 22 (cont'd)

Speaking of cruising, the grandfather of all cruises Turnback Canyon -- is just a few weeks away. This would be a good opportunity to get some of our less active members back on the water and also introduce some of our non-racing members to the "kinder, gentler" race.

Last but not least, we have some serious racing business coming up. Fleet 69 has committee duty on May 21. We wil 1 need lots of help for this. If you are interested in working and have not already volunteered, give ·Nelson Mikeska a call at 331-4153.

At the last Catalina 22 racing fleet meeting it was decided that we should put a bid in for the 1990 Catalina 22 Regional Regatta. I presented a request for support at the April 27 AYC Board of Directors meeting and was granted a unanimous go ahead with a tentative regatta date of May 19-20. 1990. Our bid will be presented at this year's regional regatta on May 6-7. Planning and preparation will have to begin as soon as possible for this event. If you are interested in rolling up your sleeves and seeing some real regatta action. let me know as soon as you can.

See you on the lake

The big news is the 1989 SC-21 Metcalf National Regatta is getting closer. It wi 11 begin with check-in Thursday n i ght. June 8. Racing begins on the 9th and ends the next day. Hopefully everyone will turn out for the Nationals!

The Spring Regatta was a wi ndy and exciting race. Our SC fleet was well represented. (Results are listed elsewhere in this Telltale.} It was great to see Jimmie Fontenot here again. And someone needs to remember to nominate Carl Morris for the Blue Duck Trophy for being so sure-footed. He fell off Bud Boucher's boat twice in one race!

Turnback Canyon is almost upon us, so take a break and sail the longest race of the year!!

ENSIGN by Mel Kunze

Harold Neel and David Stark squeaked in to win the hotly contested Warm-Up Series. By 1/2 point, Tommy Kozlowski was close behind but settled for 2nd place. Jim Baker and crew nailed down 3rd.

Earlier this year, in March, Harold and David set the pace for the season when they trailered to Houston and won 2nd place handily among Ensigns competing in the Houston Yacht Club's Mid-Winter Regatta. The competition included Dean Snyder, two times Ensign national champion! Tha~ fine performance is even more remarkable considering they were sailing in unfamiliar tides, currents. and swells. That crew may become hard to live with!!

Fleet 30 sailors are asked to post a change to their 1989 racing schedule. We will have committee duty on Nov . 5 since 0-Fleet very kindly took our committee duty on April 23. Many thanks to D-Fleet for their cooperation.

John Weiler, one of the elder statesman of the Ensign fleet, has sent several important administrative documents to be placed in our records. These include a complete Ensign parts list, a letter from Pearson Yachts explaining which hull numbers need attention to the built-in flotation, and a paper showing how lightning protection can be added. Thanks, John. These papers are in the possession of the Sec'y/Treas. Call Mel Kunze if you have any questions.

Fleet members are reminded to send in their 1989 class association dues which are $25.00 -NOT $30.00 as stated in the last Telltale. One more time; dues are $25.00. Send checks to the Secretary/Treasurer and make them payable to the Ensign Association.

Remember the regional regatta in June ..• we're in charge!!!

C15 Fleet 34 by Bill Smith

The ClS turnout for the Centerboard Regatta was great. We had 13 boats total, with 5 of them from other clubs. The racing was really competitive, with nobody really dominating the regatta. Three boats each took two firsts with a fourth taking 1 first. From my point. of vi~w, one little mistake (or fluky wmd shift) and pow, you were wondering how everybody finished ahead of you.

Not to mention that first race on Saturday. When the s~ling instructions stated the race coIDIDittee could move marks with no warning, and the skippers meeting empha~~ed that this would probably be the fm1sh line 11to give a good to-weather finish\ it was no joke.

Sometime right after the preparatory signal for the Cl~ start, the wind shifted 90 degrees nght so we started on a reach. Thus the leg before going to finish was to windward. I know the 3 leaders around that last mark headed for the original windward mark. The ot~er boats were being sneaky, not wantmg to make their 11break11 too soon. It was an eye opening experience. to not find the finish line in your field of vision after fighting your way around the last mark (now where the .... could that race committee have put that finish line NOW .. ?). The rest of the racing was a bit more 11 straightforward11

Congratulations to the Livingstons blasting into the limelight with a first place. I hope that pool

cooled you off a little. The Musselmans got second place 2 points back, with the Fosters right behind. Ted Perna from Dallas got fourth, and the Smiths got fifth.

I think the Centerboard Regatta was a lot of fun and a good omen indicating what a good year this is going to be racing C.15 1 s. Sine~ !he water temperature 1s 7 4 and nsmg fast, all of you ClS sailors that haven't been out racing yet need to unpack your boat and join the fun.

The ClS fleet is competing as a fleet in the Spring, Evening, and Fall Series. Also, many boats will be

26

attending the circuit regattas, including Dallas Districts (J~ne 10, 11), Nationals (June 19-23 m Tulsa OK), and the Houston regatta (Sept 30). Many boats have not been measured, so we will be scheduling various measuring parties soon.

Saturday series racing is under way with a good level of participation already. Saturdays are good day to get in a lot of practice with shorter courses and lots of racing. Come on out. Generally speaking, this racing will happen every Saturday through the summer ( one way or another). Typically some sort of strat.egy ch~k talk will start at 1 PM with racmg starting at 2 PM. For more detailed questions, give Vic Manning a call.

Other interesting news. . . the new Fischer sails have come in. The only question now is how to interpret the class rules for measuring the sails. One way the sails measure in ... one

Page 28: AUSTIN · YACHT · C lU B · austin yacht club 5906 beacon drive lake travis a y c o f f i c e r s commodore-----terry meyers vice-commodore-----gail bernstein

way they don't. What a hassle. We'll have a ruling on this one soon.

Another interesting boat modification being recommended by various factions has to do with shortening the spreaders and sidestays. This supposedly stiffens the mast, reducing the chance of mast breakage in heavy air. As I understand it, the factory will perform this shortening for you for a nominal fee (and some time). Jonathan Davis went this route and would be a good person to talk to about the drawbacks to "factory work". One thing to consider may be that the factory is shortening the spreader to 15 inches and the class rules state a minimum of 16. 5 inches. I wonder.

Any of you PHRF people ( or Lasar sailors without a "big" boat) want some good competition in ONE DESIGN racing, the C15 fleet is the place to be. There seem to be a few good (cheap) ClS's for sale and plenty of help available for tuning, go fast suggestions, and more. There may be boats that could be borrowed for racing purposes. NOW is your chance to have fun racing in a competitive ONE DESIGN fleet. Think about it. Get a partner, buy a ClS.

One of those "other" pasttimes ...

CENTERBOARDS

by Teri Nelms

The Centerboard handicap fleet has unanimously decided that for Spring Regatta next year, instead of sailing it, we wil I get sticks and go down to the point with our boats and take turns hitting each other and the boats. We won't get nearly as cold or wet and do as much boat damage as we did when we sailed it this year. GOOD GRIEF!! Who ordered up all that wind? After you added it to the water temperature, the words "uncomfortable" and "miserable" are sti 11 inadequate.

I felt fairly confident that my 200+ crew "Tiny" and I would have no problems, but 30 seconds into the start, our 1st jibe, with no spinnaker, dumped us on our faces. It didn't bother me though because we weren't the only ones who bit it. The keel fleet, observing from behind the l ine, got some big laughs out of it all. But it also served as a warning to them to plan for a fast and tiring day. We were outdone by Taco Fred LSchroth who had Bill Mitchell crewing for him on a partially-deceased Fireball that should not have been al lowed off a workshop bench. Their combined weight was in excess of 300 pounds so their capsizes were fewer and easier to retrieve than ours. Their first mistake was putting up the spinnaker, and their ensuing mistakes were caused by just being there. The two 505's were disgustingly fast and thank goodness they had their share of dumps too or none of the rest of us would have been speaking to them. My biggest mistake was listening to the weather station and then believing what they said:

Centerboards (cont'd)·

"Winds 10-15, temperature in the low 80's ..• " What that means to me clothes-wise is 3 layers under foul weather gear. The layers come off as the temperature rises and 10-15 might not even need the foul weather jacket. Well, ha-ha, try winds in the range of 25-35 instead which calls for a wet suit and rocks in your pockets. Every time I went in the water my knee-high boots would fill up and I'd gain another 50 pounds of body weight. When we finally tied up to AVALANCHE's anchor line, Big Mike reached over the bow pulpit and lifted me out of the water by my hands. He almost cleared the lifelines before he had to have some he 1 p. "Geeze, Ne 1 ms, I don't remember you weighing THAT much! ... " Thanks to the Tesches and Pam for dehypothermia-izing me so I could jump back on the boat and do it again on the way back home.

If had known that the winds were going to be that high, I would not have sailed it and risked doing the damage to the boat, myself or crew. I'm sure a rescue boat could have used us. With no main halyard as the easiest excuse, we didn't even sail the Sunday race. Finishes are in here somewhere. Congrats to the 505 Tapley and (choke!) Fred who so graciously al lowed me to throw him in the pool at the trophy presentation.

Our Saturday Centerboard series races were well-attended and a good lead-in to the Centerboard Regatta. I didn't get to sail any of it, but I was there at least for the Regatta to do some on-the-course observing. Boy, was I glad I didn't sail

28

it. This time? NO WIND. At 6:30 p.m. the boats were still on the course and running over time limits. Sunday was a much better day and 8 races were completed by regatta end. Mark Rylander and crew did an outstanding job of race committee with multiple start-finish 1 ines, 6-minute time sequences and number flags that were al 1 too confusing to me but worked great for everybody.

Doug and Nancy Woodward, regatta chairs, produced a great show with classy t-shirts (a few left over; go buy them), BBQ, a DJ, and trophies that were so neat that I went on and bought one on Friday evening so I wouldn't have to sail.

think was most impressed with the blow-through-storm show that they arranged to begin as I was half way through my dinner. What a party! Plates, people and boats were flying al 1 aver the place. Dave Wahlberg and I managed to tow an unmanned Capri 14 into Commander's Point, upside down, and Mandell, Saunders, Strange and others rescued 3 guys off a Hobie that was never seen again. Wahlberg and I got to observe the port and starboard bow lights of a poor power boat that sank stern first off of Windy Point. A messy evening, an impressive storm -- and nobody got hurt. Good thing it didn't come through midafternoon ! !

The Coffee Table will be fixed in time for Governor's Cup and my rude and insulting challenge to Dr. Mcintyre to "show up and get beaten up" still stands. See you on the lake.
