A taste of Spain – from Moorish palaces to river cruisingArriving in Spain, Aegean Odyssey takes youon a spectacular journey cruising up theGuadalquivir River to moor in the heart ofthe Andalusian city of Seville.

Spain is rightly famous for its great foodand wine, and a stop at Jerez allows you to sample one of the country’s mostfamous products, sherry.

In the year 711, Moorish forces fromMorocco and Algeria invaded Spain and in seven years conquered the IberianPeninsula, eventually controlling territorythat comprised most of Spain, Portugal andparts of France. Their rule lasted until 1492and the Moors left behind a remarkable

legacy of elaborate palaces, mosques andgardens. Two of the greatest treasures fromthis time are the Alhambra in Granada andthe Great Mosque in Cordoba. In Seville, you’ll stand on the exact spot whereColumbus set sail for the Americas.

With its cosmopolitan lifestyle, stunningarchitecture, fabulous food and fascinatinghistorical sites, Barcelona is understandablyone of Europe’s most popular destinations.Highlights of your visit include the Romansites of the city including the Temple ofApollo and Roman remains in the GothicQuarter and, perhaps the most extraordinaryof the city’s landmarks, the Sagrada Familia, the massive Catalan church designed by thevisionary architect Antoni Gaudi.

Mediterranean islands and Italy’s Dolce VitaMuch of Mediterranean life, culture andhistory revolve around its magnificentislands and our itineraries include visits to some of the most alluring. With itsimpressive fortifications and surroundings,it is hard to beat the drama of arriving atthe Grand Harbour of Valletta, the capitalof Malta. Ruled by the Phoenicians, Greeks,Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines,Normans, Arabs and the Order of theKnights of St John, Valletta is one of themost concentrated historic areas in theworld.

Nearby Sicily is also blessed with remarkable historical treasures including

the Greek theatre at Taormina, the cathedral of Monreale, and the temples atSegesta. You will also visit the glamorousCosta Smerelda on Sardinia, cruise thebeautiful waters around the MaddalenaArchipelago and call at Napoleon’s place of exile, Elba.

No other country in Europe combines thebest of art, culture, gastronomy and stylewith quite the same panache as Italy. Here you can enjoy a scoop of the mostdelicious gelato in the world as you admiresome of the greatest treasures of antiquity,or sip a Campari while sitting in the sun-shine on the stunning Amalfi Coast.

Whether you are marvelling at Pisa’sfamous tower or wandering through theextensive ruins of tragic Pompeii, the joy of Italy and its way of life will entrance you.Furthermore, from the grandeur of ImperialRome to the Renaissance splendour ofFlorence, Italy’s great cities are places ofcharm and wonder. Few will forget settingsight on the monumental Colosseum andthe sprawling Roman Forum or the greatFlorentine Renaissance palaces and theirnumerous masterpieces of Western art.

Marseilles and Carcassonne with its impressive fortress also await.

The natural beauty of the French Rivieraincluding Nice, Cannes and Monte Carlo, combined with its mild Mediterranean climate have made them popular destinations since the 18th century.

Provence: land of olive trees and lavenderThis is an ideal place to not only explorethe lavender fields and charming villages of Provence but also for visiting some ofsouthern France’s most interesting places.Chief among these is the medieval town of Avignon. Surrounded by well-preserved800-year-old stone ramparts, gracefulAvignon was once the seat of papal powerand this honour bestowed the city with alegacy of magnificent art and architecture, none grander than the massive medievalfortress and papal palace, Palais des Papes. It is also home to the Pont d'Avignon – ofnursery-rhyme fame – that spans halfwayacross the Rhone. Aix-en-Provence,

Nice’s main seaside promenade, thePromenade des Anglais (‘the Walkway of the English’) owes its name to some of the city’s earliest visitors, the Englisharistocracy. The picturesque surroundingshave attracted not only those in search of relaxation, but also those seeking inspiration. The clear air and soft light have been of particular appeal to some of Western culture's most outstandingpainters, such as Marc Chagall and HenriMatisse. Their work is commemorated inmany of the city's museums, including theMusee Matisse and Musee des Beaux-Arts.

As the southern Mediterranean begins to overheat in the high summer months,Aegean Odyssey turns north and sails formore temperate climes.

The sounds and sights of PortugalLisbon is one of the oldest cities in theworld, and the oldest in Western Europe,pre-dating other modern European capitals such as London, Paris and Rome by centuries. The Lisbon experienceencompasses so many things, from visitingmagnificent museums and exquisite palaces to enjoying a fresh pastry and bica (espresso) at a bar in a leafy plaza and listening to the haunting melodies of Portuguese fado (folk) music.

Located along the Douro River estuary in northern Portugal, Oporto became a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. A colourful city, Oporto is dottedwith medieval relics, soaring bell towers, extravagant baroque churches and stately

beaux-arts buildings. The historic centre isin the Ribeira district, a place typified byold shop fronts, village-style plazas and oldhouses where Roman ruins lurk beneaththe foundations.

An unforgettable pilgrimageThe capital of the Spanish province ofGalicia, Santiago de Compostela is one ofthe most important places in Christendomas it is reputed to be the place where StJames, one of the twelve Apostles of Christ,is buried. It was in the 8th century AD thatthe remains were identified as those ofSaint James the Great, and accepted assuch by the Pope and Charlemagne. Fromthen on, this settlement was not just a city, but a holy city, and one of the main centresof Christian pilgrimage.

Wine tasting in Bordeaux to the chateaux of the Loire and NormandyAfter sailing along France’s Atlantic Coast,Aegean Odyssey cruises up the RiverGironde to berth in the centre of Bordeaux. The city boasts the most beautiful streets in France and its magnificent 18th-centurycentre prompted Queen Elizabeth II to call the city “the very essence of elegance”on her last visit. Bordeaux is also rightlyregarded as the wine capital of the world, producing some of the greatest vintagesavailable. This is the perfect opportunity to try some of the greatest wines and learn about the vineyards.

Further up the coast you will take an unforgettable land tour to the picturesqueChateaux Country of the Loire. From the

16th century, the Loire Valley was wherethe French royalty preferred to spend their time and so the local chateaux wererenovated into lavish summer residences. You will visit the most elaborate and magnificent chateaux includingChenonceau, one of the most recognisable chateaux in the world.

On France’s northern coast two contrastingbut equally moving sites await you: theancient fortifications and abbey of MontSaint-Michel and the Museum of War &Peace in Caen. The island of Mont Saint-Michel has been the seat of a monasterysince the 8th century. The abbey is one of the most stunning monuments to thegreat Norman civilisation that gives thisregion its name. Descended from theVikings (“Norse Men”), the Norman influence would be felt throughout Europe(including the Kingdom of Sicily) and theHoly Land. Mont Saint-Michel’s uniqueposition of being an island only 600 metresfrom land made it readily accessible on lowtide to the many pilgrims to the abbey.Equally, this position made it readily defensible as an incoming tide stranded, or drowned, would-be assailants.

On the 6th June 1944 the largest invasionforce ever assembled landed on theNormandy coast of occupied France on fivebeaches codenamed Sword, Juno, Omaha,Gold and Juno. You can remember thebravery and endeavour of those who tookpart in the landings at the moving Museumof War & Peace in Caen.

England’s stunning West Country coastlineFramed by some of England’s most beautiful countryside, the historic port of Falmouth is our first port of call in theUnited Kingdom. Fortified by Henry VIIIand the place where news of Nelson’s victory – and his death – at Trafalgar was landed, Falmouth is soaked in British history. From here you will drive through theCornish countryside to a place that can lay claim to being one of the modern wonders of the world. The Eden Projectwas opened in April 2001 and is theworld's largest global garden. The scene is breathtaking worlds in microcosm – acultural melting pot of global plants, bothwild and cultivated, housed in glass domeslarge enough to fully enclose the Tower of London in its 60-metre-deep crater. Aegean Odyssey then sails up the estuary of the River Dart to the idyllic town ofDartmouth. Situated at the mouth of theRiver Dart, this small fishing port is a quintessential English seaside town. Withits Elizabethan streets, charming harbourand unspoilt beaches, this is truly a magical place.

London: a global capitalToday, London, with its unsurpassed cultural life, fascinating history and vibrant economy, is arguably the mostexciting city in the world. A two-night stay with a sightseeing tour past some of the city’s most famous sites is included on some itineraries.

in tHe Summer

From the Lake District to literary Dublin:the best of Great Britain & IrelandThis year, Aegean Odyssey will make itsmaiden voyage around the coast of theBritish Isles and Ireland. From the historiccity of Liverpool, you will travel to thebeautiful and dramatic Lake District. This magical area has long been a place of inspiration for artists and writers including Beatrix Potter, John Ruskin andWilliam Wordsworth. The landscape ofcraggy peaks, glittering lakes and lush valleys has made the Lake District the most popular National Park in Britain.

A call at Douglas on the Isle of Man allowsfor a visit to Peel Castle, which has beenproposed as a possible location of theArthurian Avalon or as the location of theGrail Castle. Although most of its Vikingpast is long gone, Dublin is a city that hasa great history stretching back to the 9thcentury. This is not a city, however, thatwears its history heavily and it is equallywell-known for its warm welcome and legendary pubs.

Aegean Odyssey will also sail to Ireland’sdramatic west coast to visit the city of Cork and the stunning scenery of BantryBay and the Donegal Peninsula.

Other “must-sees” visited on our BritishIsles cruises include the bucolic ChannelIslands, the historic Roman city of Chester, and the tranquil Isles of Scilly off theCornish coast.

new adventures

Edinburgh and the castles and islands of ScotlandWatched over by its imposing castle – thesymbol of the city – Edinburgh combinesmedieval relics, Georgian grandeur and a powerful layer of modern life with contemporary avant-garde. In Edinburgh, medieval palaces rub shoulders with thebest of modern architecture, Gothicchurches with amazing museums and galleries, and evidence suggests thathumans have inhabited the city for millennia. Criss-crossed by cobbled streets and narrow lanes, Edinburgh is a city that cries out to be explored.

Another highlight of historic Scotland is its castles and our new cruises feature visits to some of the most striking. Theseinclude the late Queen Mother’s favouriteresidence – the Castle of Mey, the largestand most impressive fortifications inScotland – Stirling Castle, and the home of the Dukes of Argyll – Inveraray Castle.

The Hebrides is an archipelago comprisinghundreds of islands off the northwest coastof Scotland and home to rugged landscapes, fishing villages and remote Gaelic-speakingcommunities. Here you will not only enjoymagnificent scenery including the Sound ofMull and fascinating wildlife but also tastethe very best of Scotland’s malt whiskey at the famous distillery on the Isle of Islay. The remote Shetland and Orkney Islandsare also featured on some cruises.

Iceland: land of volcanoes, glaciers, myths and legendsIt has been said that the problem with travelling in Iceland is that it is hard to take in what you are seeing because everyfive minutes you are confronted withanother breathtaking, life-affirming naturalspectacle. With its deep fjords, rainbow-arched waterfalls, volcanic peaks, gushinggeysers and creeping glaciers, Iceland putson one of the most dramatic natural spectacles on the planet.

Our itinerary has been designed to ensurethat you don’t miss any of the highlightsthis remarkable land has to offer. It takesyou from the capital of Reykjavik and theUNESCO-listed Thingvellir National Park, where the European and North Americantectonic plates meet, to the whale-filled bays of Isafjordur on the edge of the ArcticCircle and the geo-thermal baths at Myvatn. Here you will also be able to see some ofthe spectacular birdlife that makes its home on Iceland. As the ship heads back to Britain, she callsat the charming harbour of Torshavn on theFaroe Islands.

Furthermore, your visit will be crowned bya real treat, an exclusive visit to St Mark’sBasilica. As you make your way to or from Venice, one of the great advantages of small-shipcruising becomes apparent as the size ofAegean Odyssey means that you sail as closeas possible to some of the most dramaticand beautiful scenery in the world.Cruising in coastal waters allows you toappreciate the true magnificence of KotorBay. Cutting through the Dinaric Alps inMontenegro, this dramatically beautifulinlet stretches over 20 miles inland and isEurope’s southernmost fjord.

Explore Venice, the Dalmatian fjords,Roman palaces and Adriatic islandsThe first doge (duke) of Venice was electedin 726AD and the Venetian republic existedfor over a millennium until 1797. Oftenreferred to as La Serenissima, the MostSerene Republic, the Venetians acquired anempire of trade and commercial interests. This wealth funded the marvellous city yousee today.Unlike most cruises on larger vessels thatoffer a brief stop off in this wonderfulplace, our itineraries include an overnightstay so you have time to explore the city, shops, sites and restaurants of Venice.

Along the Croatian coast Aegean Odysseycalls at two fascinating and architecturallypleasing ports, Dubrovnik and Split. Thebeauty of Dubrovnik moved the writerGeorge Bernard Shaw to describe it as“Paradise on Earth” and indeed it’s hard

Having enjoyed the temperate climate of northern Europe duringhigh summer, Aegean Odyssey thenheads south, calling at France,Portugal and Italy as she makes her way to the Aegean and Greece.

to imagine anyone becoming jaded by thecity’s marble streets, baroque buildings andcharming people. Further up the Adriaticcoast, the highlight of the visit to Split iswithout doubt touring the vast Palace ofDiocletian. Completed in 305AD, the lime-stone and marble palace was built by theEmperor Diocletian for his retirement, andthe complex comprised three temples,Diocletian’s massive mausoleum (now theCathedral of St Dominus) and enoughaccommodation to house 9,000 people.

The wonders of Athens, Classical Greeceand the Greek IslandsThe poet John Milton called Athens "the eye of Greece, mother of arts and eloquence," and it was here in the 5th century BC that the genius and creativity of the ancient Greek world shone withunprecedented brilliance. This was the time of the great statesman Pericles who organised the construction of the Acropolis, of the dramatists Aeschylus,Sophocles and Euripedes and, of course, of the philosopher Socrates. Through

visits to all the key sights and the insight ofexpert guides and lecturers, your visit tothis truly remarkable place will bring to lifethis "Golden Age" of Western civilisation. After the vibrancy of Athens, the tranquillityof the Greek Islands offers a wonderfulcontrast and, as you sail through thesparkling waters of the Aegean, you havetime to meet your fellow passengers, get toknow the ship and relax into life on board. As well as stunning natural beauty, the islesof Greece offer some of the most impressivesites from this region's fascinating history.

On Delos, legendary birthplace of Apolloand the paramount religious sanctuary ofthe ancient Greek world, you can walkalong the Terrace of the Lions with itsfamous marble guardian lion statues and explore the classic Doric Temple of the Delians. By contrast, nearby Mykonos offers themore sybaritic experience of vibrant tavernas and bustling shops. A visit toCrete takes you back to the time of theMinoans, one of the earliest civilisations of antiquity, and the ornate palace atKnossos. Charming Patmos, the crusaderstronghold of Rhodes and spectacularSantorini also feature. The ship then heads for the Greek mainland with calls at Kavala for Philippi,Thessalonica, and Volos for Meteora, before cruising westward back to Sicily,Morocco, Spain and the Canary Islands to end the spring/summer/autumn seasons in Tenerife.

THE BENEFITS OF SMALL-SHIP CRUISING

In contrast to the massive vesselscruising to and from the major ports of the Mediterranean, we have a ship adaptedfor island and coastal cruising. This meansthat Aegean Odyssey can visit smaller, lesscrowded harbours, sail closer to the coastenabling you to really appreciate the magical views, and even cruise upriver to reach some amazing cities.

As we carry an average of 350 passengers, our ship is ideal for those who dislike travelling around with hordes of people. This boutique-style cruising tends to bemore expensive to operate than largerships, but if you like to avoid crowds, wander around beautiful islands, cruiseremote inlets and rivers, visit charming villages and explore ancient sites that are inaccessible to others, then AegeanOdyssey is the ideal ship for you.

Evenings on board There will be a stringtrio, pianist, casual dancing before andafter dinner, and occasional visiting localentertainment. No casino or disco. Theofficers’ introductory cocktail party iscasual without the usual formalities, andthere will be plenty of opportunities tosocialise with your fellow passengers andmeet the officers.

Dress code Suggestions for what to wearduring nights and evenings aboard arefound in the Essential Travel Informationbooklet we send you with your travel documents. Resort casual is the generalrecommendation, however, there may be occasions where a jacket for men andcocktail attire for ladies is appropriate.

Wine is included with dinner on boardAs we are in Europe, we do not think it isappropriate to serve dinner without wine.Wines are from Italy, France, Spain orGreece and are included. Other vintagesare available at reasonable prices.

A good night’s sleep We place particular importance on the standard of bedding in cabins irrespective of category. Fine duvets, covers and sheets, ample soft pillows and quality towels can be expected and your cabin steward isalways ready to make changes if you desire.

A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE ON BOARD

Language on board The ship’s languageis English and you can expect fellow passengers to be mainly from Australia,New Zealand, UK, US and Canada with a sprinkling of enthusiasts from Europe.

Technology We ask that mobile phonesand laptops be used discreetly in the interest of fellow passengers. The internetroom is always open for those who cannotresist contact with the outside world.

Children Our cruises are destinationfocused and not designed for childrenunder the age of 12.

Tipping Always a difficult subject. Wehave decided to include all tips to cabinstewards and restaurant staff. You maywish to show your appreciation to individuals offering exceptional service(totally optional).

All voyages have been meticulously planned by the Voyages to Antiquity staff in conjunction with noted historians.Plus, with frequent evening and overnightstays in port, there’s the opportunity to enjoyan after-dinner stroll ashore.

This year we are delighted to include manynew and exciting destinations. As well asreturning to the delightful ports on England’swest coast, we have expanded our sailings toGreat Britain and Ireland. New ports of callinclude: Dublin, Cork, Isle of Man, theHebrides and Faroe Islands, and Liverpoolfor a trip to the stunning scenery of theLake District or Chester.

Central to our high summer sailings in2017 is the fascinating and beautiful island of Iceland. With its creeping glaciers, bubbling geysers and active volcanoes, this is a place that genuinely warrants thedescription of “unique”. Aegean Odysseywill circumnavigate Iceland to ensure youmiss nothing of this remarkable land.

Included pre- & post-cruise land staysMany departures also have pre- and/orpost-cruise hotel stays in Rome, Athens,London, Lisbon, Edinburgh and Seville, providing guests with a wonderful chanceto relax before their cruise or the perfectopportunity to explore one of these remarkable cities at the end of their journey.

26

it’s our people

that make all the difference

It is this personal approach that ourguests remember and value mosthighly. But don’t just take our wordfor it, here is what recent travellersaboard Aegean Odyssey had to say.

Just a few comments from previous guestswere better than I dared to expect, andspeaking to fellow passengers who wereoften well experienced in cruising, theytoo were pleasantly surprised at the highstandards attained throughout. My onlycomplaint is that you have of coursespoiled me for any cruise other than withyour Company, and I look forward tojoining you again.” G.G.B MBE - UK

The cruises are itinerary driven with astrong emphasis on shore excursions(which are included in the packageprice!) that stress cultural history atports of call. And while I remember – nobingo, no casino, no photographer, nochorus line and no Baked Alaska! NeedI say more?” M.R. - Canada

WOW! Wonderful in every way! I cameby myself, but never felt alone. The shipwas very comfortable and easy to getaround. The shore excursions farexceeded my expectations! I look forward to another adventure on thisintimate ship.” R.S. - USA

Everyone from the Captain, crew, cruiseorganiser, front office personel, cabin

Thank you, yet again, for the wonderfulAegean Odyssey and Voyages toAntiquity. We were on the Athens toIstanbul cruise and visited incrediblesites. This was right up my husband’salley but, l am now certain that, if l want to see something ancient again, l will look in the mirror! This particularcruise was jam-packed with excursionsand it offered a huge number of veryserious “must-sees”. Aegean Odysseywas, as always, special and we were soproud to be a part of it! By now weknow quite a few of the crew and passengers whom we have met on previous cruises. It was a real “cominghome” experience.” J.O. South Africa

I have recently returned from The Islesof Greece cruise and feel disposed towrite and congratulate all concerned inproviding me with a truly memorableexperience. I was a single passenger onmy first ever cruise, and can honestly saythat I could not find even the smallest faultwith the whole experience.

The ship, its facilities, the food onboard, all the crew and the excursions

staff and beverage staff were extremelyfriendly and very helpful. They are acredit to your organisation and you canbe proud of them – they are doing agreat job!” G.B - Australia

As a classicist, I was looking for somefun too and this cruise has certainlydelivered. Big ships aren’t for me andthe size of this ship means you can get toknow people very quickly. It’s hard tothink of anything on this cruise whichhasn’t been a highlight for me. I’veenjoyed every minute of it. The sceneryhas been stunning and the places – without doubt I would recommend it.”

M.M. - UK

The ship was absolutely marvellous, thecrew outstanding, accommodationfood, service, entertainment all firstclass, and interesting Guest Speakersmade it a wonderful cruise.”

B.W. - Australia

It was awesome!!!!! I am very happywith the way the cruise panned out –well organised, great food and wine.Great sights to visit.” A.P. - Australia

EDINBURGH – ATHENS OF THE NORTHAdmire Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh, dramatically situated on and around remnants of an extinct volcano and its castle – said to be the most besieged castle in the United Kingdom – that stillguards Scotland’s crown jewels and thecenturies old Stone of Destiny. Edinburghis also recognised by UNESCO for the‘harmonious juxtaposition’ of its medievalcentre and neoclassical New Town.

NEOLITHIC ORKNEY Lying closer to Norway than to Edinburgh, the Orkney Islands retain significant evidence of their Neolithic and Norse heritage. With more than 1,000 prehistoricsites identified, discover Neolithic high-lights such as the Maes Howe burial chamber, the henge and stone circle knownas the Ring of Brodgar and the well-preserved settlement of Skara Brae, uncovered during a storm in 1850.

ICELAND – A GEOLOGICAL POWERHOUSEIn geological terms Iceland is a youngcountry, still being shaped by volcaniceruption. Heimaey, the only inhabited island of the Westman islands – most of which were formed by submarine volcanoes between 10,000 and 5,000 years ago – features Eldfell, the ‘mountain

of fire’, which was created during an unexpected volcanic eruption in 1973. Theisland’s sheer cliffs are home to vast puffincolonies and, as Aegean Odyssey sails on toReykjavik, you might also spot whales andother sea life which thrive in these cold waters. Reykjavik, according to the medievalBook of Settlement, was named ‘smokybay’ by its founder Ingolfur Arnarson. Eventhe design of its cathedral, Hallgrimskirkja,is based on shapes made by lava cooling to basalt. The nearby ‘Golden Circle’ route introduces many of the highlights ofIceland’s extraordinary landscape, includingthe thundering Gulfoss waterfall, Strokkurgeyser and Thingvellir, the 5km wide fault that divides the American from theEuropean plate. Thingvellir is a nationalshrine; Vikings began meeting herec930AD, making it the world’s oldest existing parliament.

Continue to remote Isafjordur where themaritime museum records how the townprospered on the salt fish industry, or enjoy a boat trip to nearby Vigur Island, known for its large colonies of puffins, Arctic terns and black guillemots. The Lake Myvatn area near Akureyri astoundsthe senses with its lunar-like landscape ofpseudo-craters, lava and geothermal fieldsfeaturing steam vents and sulphur deposits, while Husavik is the ideal departure pointfor a whale watching boat trip.

FAROES AND SHETLAND ISLANDS Cruising south Aegean Odyssey arrives in Torshavn, capital of the Danish Faroe Islands. The Shetland Islands claim to besituated ‘where Scotland meets Scandinaviaand the North Sea meets the AtlanticOcean’. As in Iceland there are few treesbut, with a heavily indented coastline, nowhere is more than three miles from thesea and there are miles of sweeping whitebeaches and turquoise seas to admire.

CLASSICAL ATHENS & NAUPLIAYour two-night hotel stay in Athens includes a full-morning's guided tour of the city's ancient citadel, the Acropolis.Built during the "Golden Age" of Athens between 447-438BC, the Acropolis represents the magnificent achievements of Athenian culture during this remarkableera. You will also visit the wonderful Acropolis Museum.

The first port of call is Nauplia, whereyou have a choice of excursions: eitherAgamemnon’s Mycenae or the UNESCOWorld Heritage Site of Epidaurus with its14,000-seat amphitheatre.

THE GREEK ISLAND ODYSSEY: FROMSANTORINI TO PATMOSAmong the Aegean's most spectacularsights are the cliffs of Santorini rising froma great half-moon caldera. The island wasalso home to the Minoan settlement ofAkrotiri: dating from the 16th century BCthis ancient city was wonderfully preservedunder volcanic ash.

The heyday of Minoan civilisation (2000-1600BC) was marked by the constructionof great palaces, the best known is Knossoson the island of Crete. Excavations beganin 1899 by the British archaeologist SirArthur Evans, who controversially “restored” the palace with his own eccentric ideas of Minoan interior design.

The next port of call is Rhodes and achance to explore the Old Town and theCitadel of the Knights of St John. There isalso the opportunity to visit the Acropolisat Lindos. The island of Delos is one of the most interesting archaeological sites in Greece, and nearby Mykonos, with itscafes and shops, is the perfect contrast.Tiny Patmos is a significant Christian pilgrimage site. Its Cave of the Apocalypseis where John of Patmos is said to havewritten the Book of Revelation.

PHILIPPI AND BYZANTINE THESSALONICAPhilippi is where the apostle St Paul delivered his first sermon in Europe, sowing the seeds of Christianity. TheRoman forum, completely excavated, is from after Paul's time. Thessalonica (also known as Salonica) became part ofthe Byzantine Empire in 395AD and istoday Greece’s second city. Your tour will concentrate on its Byzantine heritage, including the 5th-century basilica AgiosDimitrios, the Rotonda that was built as a mausoleum for Emperor Galerius in the4th century, the mosaics of the Agia Sofiaand the Museum of Byzantine culture.

METEORA AND SKIATHOSFrom the port of Volos, you will travel by road to see the famous Byzantinemonasteries built on the sandstone towersat Meteora. In all there are twenty-fourmonasteries at Meteora (which means “suspended in the air”) and although many have fallen into ruin, some of the remaining are adorned with beautiful frescoes. Skiathos is a delightful Greek island and the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing stroll or watch the world go byfrom a harbourside cafe.
