PGE blood driveWednesday, Aug. 8 8 a.m.–1 p.m. 2WTC Plaza Conference Room

PGE has been holding blood drives for decades.

Blake Wolfard from the Red Cross had some awesome comments about PGE’s blood drive on May 30:

“Last week was incredible! Our goal was 46 units of blood, and we ended the day with 64! Everyone there went above and beyond. This was the best drive you have had in years! On behalf of the nearly 200 lives saved due to your efforts, thank you!”

Can we top that? Let’s make Aug. 8 a “Red Banner Day” with your giving and volunteering!

President’s cornerby Stan Chiotti

Thanks to some prayers from our former president, Terry Judkins, I made it through my first board meeting as your new president, and we are still a functioning body! Our one-hour meeting at the Oregon Service Center is open to all PGE retirees. We meet the second Monday of all even months at 9:30 a.m. with free coffee and donuts.

As our name implies, we are all retired people — some older than others. A few have been on the Board for 15 to 20 years and they are ready to retire again! So WE NEED YOU! Our committees work on fun things like bowling, field trips, golf, luncheons, picnics and whatever we think up! You can also do rewarding work by helping at the quarterly PGE blood drives. We like to emphasize the good times that we had with PGE. Come and join us at the next board meeting on Monday, Aug. 13 in Oregon City.

After many years of dedicated work, Barbara Bergmans is stepping down as the editor of the Retiree News Bulletin. The next time you see her, give her a big hug and a thank you. Sylvia Handris has offered to help keep it going. She will be working with our PGE liaison, Dale Ritter. The newsletter is published every other month. To meet publication deadlines (editing, printing, mailing), all articles need to be sent to both of them the first week of February, April, June, August, October and December. You can contact Sylvia at 503‑518‑1182 or [email protected] and Dale at 503‑464‑7958 or [email protected].

And by the way, see our updated PGE Directory for Retirees at the end of this issue.

Like us on Facebook!About 70 retirees (and counting) think the PGE Retirees Group Facebook page is a great way to communicate, discuss and make announcements. It is more secure than a normal Facebook membership because it is a “closed” group; you can’t see any of the information it contains unless you are a member.

If you would like to join the group, already have a Facebook account, don’t currently use Facebook or need any kind of assistance, send your email to Mark Lander at [email protected].

Notes from our editorsBarb Bergmans, our former editorAfter many years of being the editor of the PGE Retiree Bulletin, I have decided to step down and hand the baton to the new editor, Sylvia Handris. I have enjoyed putting together the bulletin over the years, and I want to thank all past and present chairpersons and co-chairpersons for getting their reports to me in a timely manner. Sylvia is as passionate about our bulletin as I was, and with her experience having put together the paper for Blue Cross, I know she will do a wonderful job.

I’ll still be around and involved on the Retiree Board and want to invite the newer retirees to join the board and get the satisfaction of helping keep our organization going far into the future. I joined the board at the spring luncheon in 2003, right after I retired, when Doris Davids came up to me after the

luncheon and asked me to become a member. I’m proud to say that I was the first woman to hold the office of president in the 63 years of the organization and held the office of vice president for three terms afterwards. You can help make a difference by joining the board!

I’ll still be going to my little place in Yuma, Arizona, for the winter months and returning to Oregon for the summers, as long as I am able. I’m not slowing down — just following my dad’s advice, “to stay young, stay busy.”

Take care and God bless, Barb Bergmans

Sylvia Handris, our new editorWhen Ted retired in 2015, I knew that we had to keep busy, and it was only natural to come to the Retiree Board meetings. As we said after Ted’s 45 years of service, friendships are won and lost, but they have also endured. Now Ted and I are eager to render any

help we can, as our health and physical capabilities will allow. We owe it to the retirees to give our help and encouragement to face the “golden years” with a friendly outlook and support through all the events sponsored by the Retiree Board.

Ever since I met her, I have admired Barbara Bergmans for her energy and fortitude to push on and never give up! When she submitted her resignation as editor, I was saddened. I think this newsletter is the “bridge” of information between the company and the retirees to keep us informed about what is happening and how we can help the community at large through PGE.

I will try to do my best, and with your help we can keep up the good work Barb so eloquently has done all these years.

Sylvia Handris
