award for achieving BN RATO and TKA. Lucy Bailey was presented with an award for accomplishing Instinct in Barn Hunt with her Welsh Terrier Dodger. Jeanine Navratil and her Dalmatian, Jenna achieved great honors in the world of dog competition. They were ranked #1 in Obedience for 2016. CH

(champion) Snowood Crystal Blue Ingenuity accomplished their CD, BN, RE, CGC. They were busy! (See “What do all those letters stand for?” on page 7 to understand how much work is involved.)

Jeanine has always loved Dalmatians. She and her husband have rescued many Dalmatians over the years. She has learned the breed and the breed’s temperament to the point of achieving high honors in the ring.! We were all honored with the attendance of members that have been long time members. Lucy Bailey was a member since she was a young girl. She has been a member for 50+ years. One of her many hats is running the Assistant Trainer’s Course (with Barb Kohner). Martin Schnitker has been a member since 1971. He serves as our Treasurer. Val Smith has been a member since 1972. She is very active in the Trial committee. Jeanine Navratil has been a member since 1975. She is very active on the competitive circuit. ! Many members were honored for their volunteer service over the year. The club is very active in the community. We have a face in public venues such as Canine Games at Purina, Petapalooza in St Charles, and Pet Expo. We also have many trainers training the public and their dogs

at the Shrewsbury Facility. Last but not least, we have the Obedience and Rally ObedienceTrial in May and the Rally Obedience Trial in February. Many people have helped man (and woman) these events to

    make them successful.! The final

The 21th Annual Canine Games are being held on Sunday, October 15th, 2017 at Purina Farms. For those of you who are not familiar this event it is hosted by Saint

Louis Samoyed Rescue. Every year GSLTC is invited to participate by providing a Rally course and the Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC) for those who come out to enjoy the day with their pets. GSLTC is compensated for this event and receives funds for every person who chooses to walk the Rally course or take the the Canine Good Citizen Test (CGC) with their pet. For this to happen we need your support in the form of volunteers. If you would like to make a day of it please let me know and I will forward your name to Carol so

she can coordinate a time for you to help with

CGC testing. The hours for the Rally ring will be 9:00 am – 3:00 pm. The hours for the CGC Test will be from 9:00 am - 3:00

pm, with the last testing time at 2:30 pm.  As

always, we will bring the Rally and CGC equipment and set up the ring. We would ask for 3 persons per shift, two to walk the course and one person to take tickets. One person would need to be Rally savvy to be able to provide guidance to other volunteers and participants. For the CGC Test we are looking for one evaluator per shift, we would also need a person for the separation exercise and 2-3 people for the other stations. The rings will close at 2:45 pm. Waverley, A Dog for all Seasonsby Mary Duncan (written 2007)

Whether in darkness or early morning light, the muted bedside bark is more reliable than the alarm clock that will go off precisely ten minutes later. The

    announcement that a fresh new

day is starting without us, is

    made with emphatic

insistence and a note of regret that it could slipping by

    without us. With tail held

    pennant-like she trots out

the door to explore the day

with enthusiasm. She is happy with whatever the

    weather may bring. Her joie

    de vivre is infectious, she

never fails to make me smile,

whether she is wallowing in muddy puddles in the

    spring. . . skipping through

    sprinklers or rolling in

freshly cut grass in the hot

heavy heat of the summer. . . snuffling through the snow

with a growing nubby rhino horn

of snow. . .snorting clouds of cold dragon’s

breath. I have never known a dog so positively

excited, glued to the window during thunder and lightning, waiting for a passing glimpse of her tooth fairy, the creator of good sticks. When life brings her

lemons, Waverley is happy to make lemonade.

last shift we would like to ask for assistance to break the Rally course and CGC course down and bring the equipment Shrewsbury. Or, they may call Barb Hurley and she will be glad to pick the equipment up from their home. The amount of equipment is minimal and will probably be limited to one or two totes. Our hosts are to provide chairs but you may want to bring a portable chair for comfort, just in case. You are also welcome to bring your pet, they should be crate trained and will need to be crated when you are not able to supervise them. Please, bring water for them as well. The shift times are listed below. Please respond to us directly. Barb Hurley: [email protected] if you can help with the Rally Ring Carol Meagher: [email protected] to help with the CGC test. Please indicate which shift you would like to work:

(Rings will close at 2:45 pm) If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask. We are happy to have anyone participate but would need a minimum of three per shift. As always, the more the merrier.

    GSLTC Office Rescues in Texas

Students know Christine from their confirmation emails. Trainers know her from all her updates on

classes and her diligence with the ever prompt rosters. She and Lorraine make up the GSLTC office and they are based in San Antonio, Texas. San Antonio escaped the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Harvey. “It shifted 30 miles eastward,

literally in the last minute, and hit Houston instead. We had seriously strong wind gusts but no rain,” Christine said in an email. ! They did not stand by and watch, they

sprung into action. Their mobilization efforts through their rescue organizations was impressive and moving. Some of the trainers that work for Lorraine’s dog training business in San Antonio manage a rescue

organization called MMK9. Christine, also runs a rescue organization named P.A.W.S. The two rescue organizations “typically work hand in hand. So when we received the call that dogs and cats needed to be rescued, we swung into action,” Christine said in her email. Due to a levy breaking they lost a generator, a rescue truck and two of the trainers were stranded in Houston. The water took over everything pretty quickly. Luckily, everyone got out safely. Christine has “been wearing a rescue coordination cap trying to get animals to safety.” And they were successful having impacted the welfare of many animals.

The ever hard worker she is, Christine apologizes for delays in answering emails and messages. Thank you, Christine and Lorraine for all your rescue work.
