JulyAttempted burglary: Service St, offender disturbed

by owner who was at home at the time.Theft of sheep: theft of approx. 60 fat lambs in the

Glengower area.Burglary: on two houses in Bath St, unknown what

has been stolen at the time of writing the article.

As you can see, same as last article, burglaries and theft from motor vehicles are still rife in the area. Please make sure that your homes, sheds and cars are locked at all times, even if you are at home.

Please don’t leave your valuables, purse/wallet/car keys/phones etc on the kitchen bench when at home, it doesn’t take long for a scumbag to open the unlocked back door of your home and grab the stuff from the kitchen, this has happened on a couple of occasions where the victim was at home and in the front of the house unaware.

The majority of the TFMV occurred when the car/ute was parked at the victims home address, sometimes in the driveway next to the house. If you can park your car in the garage or shed or even in the back yard I would encourage you to do so and tradies if possible, I know it will be a pain in the behind, but not leave ANY tools in the ute or the lockable tray on the back of your ute. LOCK YOUR CARS. Any information greatly appreciated.

No reported collisions in the immediate area for the last couple of months, with the recent wet weather (article being written on 10/7). Please take care when driving, have a look at the tyres of your car as well as the windscreen and wipers, etc.

Also if the weather is a bit dodgy, rain/fog/drizzle etc and it’s a bit hard to see other vehicles, this means that they probably can’t see you so turn on your HEADLIGHTS, not just the parker lights which are absolutely useless in inclement weather.

Until next newsletter, look after each other and stay safe …. As I always say I am YOUR local copper and can be contacted on station number 5345 3211, mobile number 0427 683 940, fax number 5345 3794 or email at [email protected].

If you need police attendance for an emergency situation ALWAYS rings 000.

Facebook is all well and good for what its designed for, but if you have anything that needs reporting to the police, please make sure that you do report it not just comment on the Clunes Online Facebook page. In an emergency - i.e., I need the coppers here right now - dial 000. If it’s some information or anything other than an emergency ring me or send me an email.

The little piece of information that you may think is not important may just be what I am looking for to identify a crook, etc.

Bowled Over by Historyby Sheila Hollingworth

Clunes is now a well-known historical town, but you may not know that the Clunes Bowling Club was established 138 years ago, during the gold rush days. Early members, who generally worked in the mines, were even asked to wear their slippers when playing, to reduce the wear and tear on the greens.

The first annual subscription was one pound one shilling and for the first 50 years it was the custom to ask the Mayor to be the Club President – even if he didn’t play bowls.

Like many areas of life, the early days were gender segregated, with ladies membership only first proposed in 1899. This suggestion was apparently received with much laughter and it was generally agreed that the ladies were only there to provide refreshments. It wasn’t until 1921, when membership numbers had declined, that nine ladies were allowed to join as members – at half the usual subscription fee.

The Club has occupied its current site since it opened, making it the fourth oldest club in the Ballarat District. The land was initially a temporary reserve of the public gardens along the creek. It wasn’t until 1963,

some 85 years after the club began, that the land was formally reserved for the Clunes Bowling Club.

In 1882 the Council approved plans for a pavilion to be built, and by 1912, night bowls were being played under gas and acetylene lights. In 1964, after many delays and a lack of agreement about replacing the old buildings, the then President, Bill Anderson, came in one day with his tractor and pulled the old building down. By 1965 the current club house had been built and various improvements to the building and grounds have continued since then.

The Club has always relied on the tireless efforts of its members who continue to look after the wonderful greens, run the bar and kitchen, take care of the premises, select and coach teams, and generally keep the Club bowling along. Even after nearly 150 years, there’s still much work and play to be had.

(Thank you to Valerie Anderson for compiling a brief history of the Club, which was used to write this article.)

Notes from the PastFrom the Clunes Museum

Most of the veterans of labor who are looking forward to the establishment of the old age pensions are disgusted with the idea of making the age at which the pension be payable so high as 65, and I have heard one impassioned grey beard put the case against it with a good deal of force. “ Sixty – five!” he said, scornfully,

Clunes Free Lending Libraryby Phil Taig

The residents of Clunes can be rightfully proud of their civic buildings as they provide a link back to the days when Clunes became the first Victorian Gold Town. One of those buildings is the Free Lending Library in Templeton Street. It is just one of a select few buildings in our town to be on the State Register of Heritage Victoria and was once a dynamic centre of learning.

The CFLL Committee of Management has been concerned that the building has deteriorated over the past decade and commissioned a report from Hepburn Shire Heritage advisor and Historic Architect, Ms Amanda Jean. Her report was received last month and covers the need for an extensive list of repair work that

must be carried out to avoid further deterioration of this grand old building.

Two of the worst problems relate to recent heavy winter rainfall: a leaking roof and water drainage occurring under the floor. These faults must be urgently addressed and rectified. Several construction companies have been approached to provide tenders for the cost of the repairs required to be carried out.

In the week after the Federal election vandals have again broken into the building on two separate occasions, hammering a hole in an internal brick wall, smashing light globes, breaking (another) window, and brushing red paint over walls, the Hall floor and electrical appliances.

Remembering that the CFLL Committee has a goal to restore the building, and upgrade it to contemporary standards for the benefit of the Clunes residents, It is extremely disappointing that there are some in the community that have no respect for public property and no civic pride. This destructive action has added a considerable financial burden to the task of restoring our majestic Free Lending Library.

A suggestion has been received that if disabled access was provided, the Free Lending Library would make a wonderful venue for a voting Poll Booth, (The State election is not far away). Should you have a creative idea for the Free Lending Library, contact Reg Kinnersly by phone on 5345 3107.

Neighbourly NatterHow can you get involved and make your own film?

Sign up at Clunes Neighbourhood House on 5345 4078 and register to become a Clunes Kid Filmmaker.  Bring your device or tell us you’ll need to use one provided, and participate in weekly “How to” filmmaking sessions to create your very own Clunes Blockbuster.

There will be four themes to choose from:Our landOur historyOur peopleOur futureYou can choose what sort of film you want to make.

A comedy, drama or documentary… or something in between! It’s up to you. As the Words in Winter festival draws to a close you’ll have a chance to enter your short-film into the Clunes Kids Short Film Premiere.  Have you ever imagined what it would feel like to dress up in some fancy duds and literally walk down the red carpet to see your own film? Well during Words in Winter, you’ll get to do just that!

Earlier this year when we started a conversation to help us pull together a Small Towns Transformation grant, the idea of developing the grounds around Neighbourhood House and the Bottle Museum into an amphitheatre and natural playscape was raised.

Whi le we d idn’t ge t the Sma l l Town Transformation grant, it seemed like too good an idea (like many of the others as well!) to waste. So we pitched it to Hepburn Shire Council as part of a Community Planning Fund grant round – and were successful! We are working with local landscape

architects to begin getting all the necessary planning permissions (always time consuming on a heritage property), but hopefully as it warms up you’ll begin to see some changes afoot.

Funding will provide us with the foundational work required, but we will still need to undertake a community build for other aspects. Anyone interested, p lea se don’t hes i ta te to contact me on co [email protected].

Road to Rio - Steven Hill Homeby Jane Lesock

Equestrian Australia has announced that the final two members for the 2016 Australia Rio Jumping Team are Matthew Williams and James Patterson-Robinson. Both have had the advantage of being based overseas and competed in previous Olympic Games representing Australia. We wish them well. Sadly this means our very own Steven Hill and Belle will not be realising their dream to represent Australia at the Rio Olympics.

While in Europe, Steven and Belle competed in 3 Nations Cups, the only Aussies to be selected for all 3

teams, where up to 16 teams representing 16 different countries compete against each other. They jumped in Italy (a warm up event), Denmark finishing 11th, Austria finishing 9th and Poland finishing 8th. In al l competitions, Steven and Belle with their grooms, Amanda and Indy, represented their country with dedication, pride, enthusiasm and 100% effort.

Steve and Amanda extend their sincere thanks and gratitude to the entire Clunes community and district for their best wishes, Facebook entries, encouragement, interest and financial help whilst in Europe. Without this support all this would not have been possible. Welcome home Steve and Belle to your family and friends here in Clunes. We are ALL very proud of you and for us you are No 1.
