On Friday 8 August, the Town Hall was packed to capacity with volunteers from all groups in Clunes coming together to enjoy a dinner, guest speaker and to hear the announcement of our new Citizens of the Year. This year, the selection panel had a very difficult job with 16 nominations.

CTDA Pres ident , Michae l Cheshire, welcomed all, including official guests Catherine King MP; Cr Neil Newitt; Suze Camm, Head of Clunes Wesley Campus; Sonia Jardine, Principal Clunes Primary School; Hazel Edwards OAM and her husband, Garnet; and Bishop John Stewart and his wife, Janine.

Again the dinner was catered by Smokeytown Cafe and tables waited on by 12 enthus ia s t i c Wes ley students.

Emcee Kath Mi lne took a moment to reflect on our citizens that had passed away in the previous 12 months before the 3 course dinner was served to tables that had a ‘hot pink’ theme, generously provided by Brett Currell.

Kath also mentioned the many Clunes community groups that were in attendance. There were close to 20 groups in total and, as we know, some people ‘wear many hats’. Thank you, Kath, for another wonderful job emceeing.

Hazel Edwards OAM was our guest speaker whose talk was on ‘quiet heroes’ and she said what an honour it was for her to be in a room full of volunteers. If you missed the dinner, you will have an opportunity to meet Hazel again at Children's

Booktown in November.

A t h o l Chaf fey a ga in wa s g iven the honour to announce our Young Citizen of the Year, which he does so admirably. Athol has a knack of keeping a l l in suspense for as long as possible with clues before announcing the rec ip ient and this year it was Molly Bedwell. You can read all about Molly on p12.

Malcolm Hull announced both Female and Male Citizens. Malcolm’s speech was done articulately and with passion.

Jean Higgins had no idea why she was there with family, but was invited to the stage so Malcolm could cont inue read ing Jean’s long association with many groups here in Clunes and to accept her Female Citizen Award.

For the first time many of us saw Graeme Johnstone speechless when he was named Male Citizen of the Year. All three are well-deserved of th i s recogn i t ion o f the i r volunteerism here in Clunes. Read more about Jean and Graeme from p11.

Creative Clunes kindly donated a g i f t voucher for a n ight ’s accommodation and a round of golf at the Novotel in Creswick. The lucky winner was Vaughan Brown, a

new resident to Clunes and first timer to dinner. Enjoy your break, Vaughan.

Also thank you to Gary Sharp for being the ‘paparazzo’ for the evening and taking lots of happy shots.

This event takes many months of organisation and planning and without a team of helpers it would not happen.

In reviewing the last 12 months, the CTDA continues to provide a service and support: to both the community and visitors to Clunes. Some of our major activities have been...

Our Community Newsletter - thanks to Lily Mason for layout and Judy Burn for stories - which is now printed in Clunes by local residents Peter and Cate Billing.

We ran the successful Cabaret in the Bluestone last October, a fundraising event for the Clunes Youth Group.

We were again the event organisers for Australia Day in Clunes.

We sponsored Organs of the Goldfields to ensure recitals are held in Clunes.

We provided sponsorship and support to Booktown plus writing in support of Creative Clunes, gaining the railway station building for an office and centre.

This year we were instrumental in bringing the Yarra Gospel Choir to Clunes which proved a great success. They are planning to return next year.

We are now looking at revamping the Clunes website (clunes.org), for the promotion of Clunes and to ensure all local non profit groups and clubs have an opportunity to have their website on this CTDA site. We are seeking any ideas from the community on what they would like to see as a result of the update.

Representation on Hepburn Regional Tourism, the Council’s peak tourism body, to ensure Clunes has ‘a voice’.

Under leadership of Leanne Kamp, efforts are being made to revamp and reintroduce a Clunes Market. You will have seen notice of this in The Advocate. Leanne expects it to be up and running before the end of the year.

The CTDA is the auspice body for Words in Winter under the leadership of Rhonda Fawcett and her team. What a great job Rhonda does here in Clunes to provide a month-long, very entertaining event.

Auspice body for the Grasslands Project under the leadership of Ken Evans and Rebecca Russell. This activity has gained some government funding and will be held at the Lee Medlyn Home of Bottles site. Watch for more info about this interesting event.

And, of course, hosting Community Dinners to recognise the volunteers of Clunes.

Thanks must go to all those who have supported the CTDA, and indeed the Clunes community, throughout the year. It is this teamwork that ensures success. Jane Lesock has been our rock over many years and continues to provide much support year after year. Paul Lesock has performed the role of secretary admirably, while Ken and Marg Gibson have given their time by providing a venue for sales and bookings for events. Many other good people have volunteered throughout the year and for this we thank you all.

Clunes Booktown For Kids is coming! And we need a little help from our friends…by Creative Clunes

Building on the strength o f our May Clunes Booktown Festival, we’ve been busy organ i s ing a fantastic program for our first stand-alone Clunes Booktown for Kids. It will happen on Friday 31 October (Schools’ Day) and Saturday 1 November (Family Day).

We’re excited because it w i l l p ro v ide amaz ing opportunities for the children in our community to meet, learn and hear from 13 of Australia’s great children’s authors and illustrators – Hazel Edwards, Craig Smith, Frané Lessac, Mark Greenwood, Claire Saxby, Andrew Plant, Sherryl Clark, Jackie Kerin, Mark Wilson, Krista Bell, Judith Rossell, Ann James and Mark Carthew. Between them they have written and illustrated more than 1100 books!

And we are setting up the Children’s Village of Lost Trades with 20 tradespeople showing their craft and skill.

Schools’ DayWorking with the Clunes Primary School we will be

offering each of our kids a free ticket to one event of their choice on the Schools’ Day and access to all the non-ticketed attractions. The Schools’ Day is for school children and their teachers only. We will be attracting schools from Ararat to Bacchus Marsh, and from Geelong to Bendigo.

Family DayOn Saturday we will hold the Family Day. It’s for

everyone. Toddlers are free; adults are at the children’s price of $20 for the day; and group bookings of 4 or more get a hefty discount. All the details are on the website www.clunesbooktown.com.au and we’re working with tourism authorities to help promote this event into Melbourne.

We have copies of lots of the authors’ and illustrators’ wonderful children’s books on display in our Booktown office, at 22 Fraser Street Clunes. So why not pop in some time to meet our new manager, Sheila Hollingworth, and check out the books?

Getting InvolvedThe event will also provide opportunities for

community groups that wish to participate. Please contact us if you want to get involved.

As with all of our festivals, we need lots of volunteers to help with a range of activities – these include checking tickets at the festival entry points, putting up tents, being ‘room monitors’ for events, selling books at the festival bookshop, helping in the information tent, helping with mailing out programs and other important tasks.

Of course our volunteers are given a festival pass for the Family Day, plus training, support, and general VIP status. If you are able to help, even for just a couple of hours, please pop in to see Jane Lesock at Mount Beckworth Wines (45 Fraser St) on Fridays to Sundays, or Sheila Hollingworth at the Booktown Festival Office (22 Fraser Street) on Mondays to Thursdays.

If you are passionate about football you won’t want to miss hearing Phillip Taylor, a self-confessed ‘Hawks tra g ic ’ , talking about his new book with Club President, John Bedwell. Come and hear about Hawthorn’s triumphant 2013 sea son f rom the f ans ’ perspective. Phillip doesn’t dwell on the kicks, corkies, handballs or hard-ball gets. Rather, he traces Hawthorn’s dramatic and eventful season and g ives vo ice to the excitement, exasperation and, ultimately, exhilaration that all Hawks supporters felt.

Phillip has supported Hawthorn for 45 years, picking the brown-and-gold jumper out of a line-up at a sports store in 1969. He was at the MCG in 1971 when the Hawks won the premiership, and has now seen Hawthorn compete in 15 Grand Finals, winning 10 of them.

Come and join in the buzz of premiership fever. Free admission. Drinks and books will be available for sale.

Clunes Landcareby Sue Kelman

The Courier has recently interviewed the Clunes Landcare Group after hearing about the success of the platypus event. Unfortunately they were unable to see any of these shy little creatures but you may be able to see them at Prue Simmons’ new venture, Fantastic Frogs, coming to you in Frogtober. As is usual the whole Clunes community is becoming involved.

The Clunes Art Group is staging an exhibition in the Angling Club; The Clunes Primary School and Wesley College are creating art works and there will be talks and walks for those who want to know how fortunate we are home to another endangered species (we do not include The Greater Bronzed Aussie Male, which has been proven to be a mythical creature in this group). You will see chalked outlines on the pavements by drains to remind us not to throw litter which will be washed into the creek and affect our fish, frogs, fowls and furries. There is a rumour that Frogs Legs will not be on the menu locally but Frogs in Ponds will be very popular.

Watch out for the notices throughout town and come along to the Tuesday Creek Walks.

CLAG Exhibition Opens Words in Winter for 2014by Marlene Tozer

Regardless of the rain, snow and minus degree temperatures, 80 people ventured out to the Weavery on Friday 1 August for the opening event of the month-l ong Words in Winter program. Whi le be ing warmed by the good food, wine and company, they were part of the runaway success of the opening of the Clunes Artists’ Group’s Annual Art Exhibition.

The diversity and high standard of the 48 works being exhibited by the talented group was as high as would be seen anywhere in Victoria.

The Wunder Cabinet (curiosity cabinet) placed in the centre of the gallery was of major interest. Each drawer contained its own variety of wonders from doll’s houses to haberdashery gems, plants and much more.

The Annual Kate Edward’s Awards for 2014 included the inaugural Kate Edwards 3D Award won by Lorna Fitzpatrick for her sculpture and the 2D Award won by Joanne Hastewell for her beautiful oil painting (pictured).

Other awards offered were the Soul Companions Animal Art Award won by Elizabeth Paszko and the Ian Baker Everyman Award won by Raeleen Young.

The Words in Winter People’s Choice Award will be announced at 3.30 on Sunday 10 August at the gallery.

G’Day everyone, here’s the crime round up for the last month…

No reported crime in the last month.No reported collisions in the area in the last month

either.Still processing a couple of locals each month in

relation to drink driving, so with the footy finals and hopefully some nicer weather upon us very soon, a timely warning about the yearly targeting of drink drivers by both the Ballarat and Maryborough highway patrol boys and girls. They will be sitting off pubs, and footy clubs, so if you think that you won’t be caught, or that if I pull you over I will just let you go because you’re a local, think again. I will not let anyone off for drink driving, ever. I have been to way too many fatal collisions involving alcohol affected drivers, I don’t want to have to knock on someone’s door and tell them that their loved one/s have been killed because of one stupid decision to drink and drive. Enough said…

I was lucky enough to attend the recent Clunes Community Dinner and again privileged to present the Clunes Junior Citizen of the year award to Molly Bedwell. It was a great honour and an equally great night, thanks to Jane and the CTDA for including me again.

As I write this newsletter, the last round of the CHFNL is only a couple of days away. Being the coordinator for the Junior Netball teams I am pleased to say that both the U13 and U15 girls are both in with a shot of sneaking into the 8 and therefore playing finals. I wish them all the very best of luck. I have had a ball being the junior coordinator and the manager of the U17 girls. Thanks to Kath Milne and the committee for allowing me to perform these roles.

Again I will be presenting the Clunes Police Leadership Award at the upcoming Clunes Junior Football and Netball Best and Fairest vote count, the award goes to one player from each junior team who has shown outstanding leadership throughout the year, both on and off the court/oval.

Clunes Fire Brigadeby Lindsay Pritchard

150 Year CelebrationThe Brigade Celebrates 150 years Service to the

community this year.2014 marks the celebration of a significant milestone

for Clunes and the Clunes Fire Brigade in particular. It recognises the 150th anniversary of the formation of the Brigade, even though there had been a form of fire protection in the town prior to 1864.

Clunes, like most towns, formed a Fire Brigade early in its history for the protection of its residents. Most buildings were constructed of timber, the substantial brick and bluestone buildings for which Clunes is now well known came later as the town became more established. The Brigade will be marking the occasion on Sunday 5 October with a street parade in Fraser Street and displays at the Fire Station and area behind the Bottle Museum after the parade. Robert Campbell’s book will not be available until then. Further details will be available closer to the event.

Landscaping Your Home for Fire PreventionSpring is almost here and you may want to start

landscaping around your home or property.Your home and garden can blend in with the natural

environment and at the same time be landscaped for fire prevention and protection. During a bushfire, a well-designed garden will help provide a safety zone around your home, the plant selection, arrangement, location and maintenance of your garden can help your home survive the passage of the fire front and provide you with a place to take shelter during this time.

If you live in the bush you can expect several days each summer that your home and family may be threatened by fire. Landscaping can play a major part in the survival of your property in a bushfire.

With fire protection in mind, landscaping can reduce the amount of fine fuel, (fuel less than a fingers diameter), prevent flames reaching the house, act as a barrier from radiant heat, create a fuel reduced area between your home and the bush, minimize spark and ember threat and reduce wind speed.

Each home is different, so to assist you with information on preparing your home for bushfire the CFA has developed the Landscaping for Bushfire: Garden Design and Plant Selection booklet. This is available free to the community.

Clunes and District Pre-Schoolby Sue Evans and Lee Swanson

We would like to thank everyone who attended the Clunes and Distr ict Pre -School 40th Bir thday Celebration. It was a wonderful opportunity to greet past parents, staff and children and share stories from the past.

Over the years much love and support has gone into this pre-school through fundraising, parent commitment to committees and changes in venues and buildings. We appreciate all the many hours that have been put into this pre-school over the years to make it the nurturing, caring educational space that it is today.

Congratulations to all who have contributed over the years.

Hepburn Shire Libraries Exceeding Expectationsby Maria Abate, Hepburn Shire Council

Hepburn Shire Libraries including The Warehouse - Clunes have exceeded targets set in the Council Plan 2013-17.

Council committed to increasing visits and loans across all Hepburn Shire libraries by 5% over the four year period. This target has been achieved in the first year.

Data for the 2013-14 financial year highlights the following achievements in Hepburn Shire libraries: 11.1% increase in visits; 5.9% increase in loans; 5,412 active members, which equates to 5% increase on 2013 or 38% of the Shire’s population; 441 programs were run in Hepburn Shire libraries, attended by 5,221 people.

As part of its commitment to keep library collections up-to-date and interesting, Council invested $100,550 in 2013-14 to increasing collections across the Shire, including books, DVDs and Talking Books.

GRASSLANDSby Rebecca Russell

The GRASSLANDS theatre project recently received funding from Arts Victoria. With Regional Arts Victoria funding already secured, the project can now formally begin. The CTDA and Clunes Neighbourhood House have both auspiced GRASSLANDS and Rebecca Russell and Ken Evans would like to thank both organisations for partnering and supporting this unusual project in Clunes.

GRASSLANDS explores the history of one place, the site of the old Clunes South School. The site has been grasslands, a school, knitting mills, a bottle museum and a Neighbourhood House. The show also touches on home life, school memories, travel and the landscape.

Rebecca has been speaking to some locals about their lives in Clunes and recording their voices for the soundtrack of the show. Hearing about living, working and school life in Clunes from Enid Steart, Kate Featherston and Christine Rowe has been fascinating. Rebecca is still looking to speak to a few others, please see details below.

Planning for the building of the ‘real hill’ stage is well underway and we have received great support from the Bottle Museum Committee and council staff in the planning stages. The Clunes Waterways and Landcare group have thrown their support behind the project and June Johnstone turned up a couple of weeks ago with magnificent native grasses for the stage. Thanks! We will

be having a hill sculpting day to shape the hill and prepare it for planting. Anyone interested in helping out would be greatly appreciated. Details and regular updates will go out through iConnect and the community Facebook page.

Rehearsals for a group of local children performing in the show will take place in the next school holidays and during term 4, please see p10 for more details.

Beat’s Bit...Hello Fellow Clunesians.

The Neighbourhood House continues in its efforts to provide programs and services that are valued and utilised by our community. Our success can best be described as sporadic.

Numbers of participants in our various activities range from poor to steady: our target is to have at least 200 participants in our activities each month. For July we managed 302 with Lily’s yoga continuing to be the largest single draw card.

Many of the activities on offer attract only two or three expressions of interest. Unfortunately, an insufficient number for us to proceed. We are hoping that the programs outlined below may change this dynamic!

There are several ideas for activities and services that we are looking at developing, however, for us to proceed we need you, the community, to let us know if you are interested. If people let us know their interest we will ‘make it happen’.

On a really positive note: many of the initiatives and projects listed below are as a result of people in the community approaching us with an idea and the Neighbourhood House then working to make these ideas a reality: a fantastic way for us to do things and create activities. I would, again, encourage ANYONE with ideas for activities to contact me.

These type of partnerships are the Neighbourhood House’s life blood!

Living in a small community comprising of people with very varied interests makes it difficult for a Neighbourhood House to offer activities that are wanted by sizable groups. However with your ideas, involvement and participation as ‘consumers’ we will continue to beaver away at trying to meet the interests of as many interest groups as we can.

New: Fabulous Fresh Food FestivalWho said ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’?

Does the idea of a free lunch, loads of give-a-ways, and the chance to win door prizes, the opportunity to learn new culinary skills and to watch professional chefs weave their magic with fresh food appeal to you?

If your answer is yes, then you need to come along to The Absolutely Fabulous Fresh Food Festival (TAFFFF) at Creswick Town Hall 12-5pm on Thursday 11 September.

TAFFFF is part of a Hepburn Health Service project aimed at encouraging healthier food choices and using fresh produce. Project partners include Hepburn Shire Council, the four Shire Neighbourhood Houses and The Novotel Forest Resort, Creswick. Many local individuals, groups and businesses are supporting the event.

Featuring local food growers, Melbourne Markets Fresh showca s ing a va r ie ty o f f re sh produce , entertainment, health checks, kid’s art exhibition, face painting, storytelling and loads more, the event will appeal to all ages.

Lunch will be available between 12 and 2pm with tastings throughout the afternoon and local professional chefs demonstrating how to prepare wholesome and delicious food without breaking the budget.

New: Partnership with the local ABC Open: Telling your stories

We have been approached by a producer from ABC Open in Ballarat to facilitate storytelling via the written word, photography or video.

Larissa, the producer, is keen to conduct workshops through the Neighborhood House to teach the basics of story telling through any of these three media.

ABC Open have regular themes for stories (most frequently human interest. I.e., they want your experiences) that are outlined on the ABC Open website.

Larissa is prepared to tutor people 1:1 however small groups are preferred. If you want to know more or are keen to have a go contact the Neighborhood House ASAP.

Ongoing: Clunes Volunteer CentralIf you are thinking about volunteering, be it for 2 or

20 hours, on an ongoing or one-off basis in any field of interest locally, contact us and we will arrange for you to be trained and employed in a field of your interest (not just with the Neighborhood House!!)

Suitable for anyone looking at volunteering: young or old, employed or Centrelink beneficiary.

New: Clunes Community DinnersOn most Tuesday evenings f rom 19 August ,

Community Dinners will be conducted at the old Town Hall Supper Room between 6 and 8pm.

Simple but tasty meals will be prepared and served for $5 per person (adults), $3 for children or cost free if you arrive ½ hour early or stay afterwards to help with preparation or clean up.

ALL are welcome, come along, bring a friend for a nutritious and good hot meal and a chat.

New: Vegetable/ flower growing allotments - Grow your own

The Neighborhood House has the option of accessing a large block of crown land within the township (about 50 meters from our office) - the possibility of acquiring use of the block, fencing it, building a series of raised growing beds, small garden sheds, compost heaps and watering systems has been suggested.

To pursue the project we need people in Clunes to express interest in ‘renting’ one or more allotments on an ongoing basis. Perhaps at $8 per month per allotment/shed.

If the idea interests you, please let us know and discuss options with us. Ideal for those in rental accommodation or anyone wanting to be part of a community activity and setting. Should we get 10 or more EoI’s, we will progress the idea further.

Ongoing: Homework/Tutoring Program

Conducted by the Clunes Youth Program Association in partnership with CNH, skilled teachers and tutors are available to support, teach and supervise students who require a safe and quiet place to complete their homework or for those wishing to improve their understanding of specific subjects via 1:1 tutoring.

The program is designed for Year 2 to Year 12 students.

Your place cannot be guaranteed un9l the fee is paid in advance and an enrolment form is filled out. Weekly payments are available by special arrangement. Receipts is-‐sued. Courses will only run if there is sufficient demand. Note: Most classes need a minimum of 5 peo-‐ple to go ahead.

WANTED Children Performers for GRASSLANDS theatre project.

Rebecca Russell is looking for 7 children aged between 8-12 years to be part of the GRASSLANDS show. The children involved will work with Rebecca on Monday afternoons during term 4 to rehearse for the show in November.

Children and parents will need to commit to regular rehearsals and be available to perform in the dress rehearsal and two performance nights (see dates).

This is a unique opportunity to be involved in a professional theatre production, have fun performing and help to create certain scenes in the show.Open rehearsals - 2nd week of the School holidays:

2014 Male Citizen of the Year – Graeme Johnstone

This year’s Male Citizen of the Year is a chap who is larger than life, committed, enthusiastic, a hard worker, always happy and always puts Clunes first.

Since moving to Clunes in 1999 to run a B&B, Graeme has literally not stopped running. It is not an unusual sight to see Graeme going from one end of Fraser Street to the other doing some sort of job or fixing a problem. Running his B&B gives Graeme the opportunity to be the perfect host to the many visitors and a great advocate for Clunes. Graeme does not miss an opportunity to promote Clunes.

Graeme got involved in the town straight away. He has been an active member of the CTDA since moving here and been President for many years. Part of this role was as the Clunes rep on the Hepburn Regional Tourism Board for 12 years, involving monthly trips to Daylesford, day or night, to ensure Clunes got its fair share of publicity and acknowledgement.

Graeme is a believer in ‘shop local’ and is a great supporter of the many retailers and businesses in town.

Also, Graeme is the Chair of the successful Clunes Ceramics Awards. The first exhibition was held in 2009. Because of the workload and amount of volunteer time to run such an event, it is only held every two years. It is a respected and highly prized Regional Arts event which attracts Australia-wide exhibits. The event is held over four weekends and attracts visitors from far and wide. With any event you need sponsorship and Graeme has been successful in obtaining large sums for prizes to attract renowned artists.

Graeme’s background is in education, mainly teaching maths and drama and, not being shy, it was not a surprise to see him involved in the Clunes Film & Amateur Theatre Society, either playing a role or directing. Even when we have had films made here in Clunes, Graeme has been involved as an extra. The last one being Ned Kelly back in 2003.

You would have to say Graeme’s biggest commitment to Clunes has been Booktown and its success. He has been on the Board of Creative Clunes since 2007, holding positions as both Chair and currently Deputy Chair. It is impossible to work out the volunteer hours he accumulates but has always got a smile on his face. On Booktown weekend he literally does not stop. Even when everyone else is too exhausted to do anything, you will see Graeme still running around carting equipment, cleaning up or making sure everyone is happy.

When Graeme does have some down time, he enjoys playing golf and supporting the local Clunes Golf Club.

Once this is over, he is not known to say no to a good whiskey or red wine.

Graeme is one of those people that cannot say no. Whenever anything needs to be done in Clunes you can rely on him. You just have to ask. Many a time when things have needed to be set up for a group coming to town he is always willing.

Graeme is a tireless worker and without people like him things would not get done and we are so grateful that he and June decided to make Clunes their home.

The town is indebted to you Graeme for this commitment, enthusiasm and tireless work and a well-deserved recognition.

2014 Female Citizen of the Year – Jean HigginsQuality of life in a small town depends to a great

extent on the efforts from members of voluntary organisations. As we all know, Clunes is noted for the calibre of its volunteers and this lady is no exception.

Jean was born in Melbourne but fate brought her to the district of Clunes where she met and married Jack Higgins back in 1950.

They made their home in Leslie Street and raised three sons. With raising children in Clunes, of course Jean was involved in the local Primary School and was a committee member from 1958 to 1975.

Having all boys meant Jean was also involved with the local Clunes Football Club and on the Junior Football Committee and still to this day is the longest serving member of the Ladies Auxiliary.

Of course, you can’t live in Clunes with young ones and not be involved with the swimming pool - as Jean was for over 10 years.

The Clunes RS&L Women’s Auxiliary has been a big part of Jean’s life since 1983, being Secretary from 1984 to

the present day. Another 30 year service. With this organisation, Jean organises and contributes to the many catering and fundraising events for the members and community of Clunes.

Jeans husband, Jack, is the Welfare Officer and Legatee delegate and as in many cases it is the quiet wife in the background that gives all the moral support.

Another huge contribution Jean has given to Clunes, has been as volunteer for Meals on Wheels, which has allowed many elderly people to remain in their own homes, and Jean only retired from this last year after 34 years.

Jean also is a great church person. This involves being the Sacristan for 22 years and also Secretary at the local St Thomas Aquinas. Other duties would include building maintenance, diocesan affairs, lay assemble and World Day of Prayer.

At the Clunes Bowling Club, Jean has held positions such as President and Catering Officer and being involved for over 50 years, Jean is now a Life Member.

There are many other groups in Clunes that Jean has been involved in either as a member or committee person and to name a few more: Clunes Fire Brigade Ladies Committee and Clunes Golf Club.

When Jean has had some spare time she has enjoyed the social side with sporting interests such as golf, lawn bowls and indoor bowls.

Jean is known in Clunes for her generosity and many acts of kindness. A tireless and cheerful worker who has given outstanding service to Clunes.

Jean has been acknowledged for this numerous times: being awarded Life Membership but top of the list would be the Certificate of Merit with Gold Badge back in 2008 for the RS&L which is a national award and is the highest given to a non-service member for outstanding service.

Jean is a modest person and never looks for praise.The amount of time and effort Jean has contributed

to the Clunes community is immeasurable but it is the caring and generous spirit with which it is done that makes Jean a most wor thy rec ip ient o f th i s acknowledgement. On behalf of the Clunes community we THANK YOU, Jean.

2014 Young Citizen of the Year - Molly Bedwell

Molly is the daughter of John and Jo Bedwell and has a younger brother, Parker.

Molly attended Clunes Primary School before going on to Ballarat College for her secondary schooling. While Molly was at this school, she was selected to go to New Guinea to do humanitarian work and then realised she wanted to become more involved with those less fortunate - especially children. Molly has recently applied to become a volunteer with Camp Quality and, having

been accepted, is now able to go on camps for kids with cancer.

While she was at Primary School, she exhibited in the Children's Section at the Clunes Show before progressing to becoming a Steward, a position she holds today.

Molly has played netball for Clunes from junior to senior level before retiring due to injury. She was one of the many junior netballers who made up sandbags during the floods. Although retired as a player, Molly is still involved as a trainer and is currently their Merchandise Manager.

Not being idle, Molly worked part time in Clunes while st i l l at school , before securing ful l t ime employment in Ballarat and is now studying primary school teaching online.

Coming f rom the Bedwel l fami ly, and with grandparents such as Mac and Judith Fawcett, who are great role models and both previous Citizens of the Year, it was only natural Molly would became a volunteer.

Growing up in Clunes is a wonderful environment for young people. We don't have the facilities the city kids have to entertain ourselves, we seem to learn more about helping others and being part of a community and this is what Molly has done.

It is wonderful to see such young people like Molly getting involved, watching their elders and learning respect for others. I think we will all be in safe hands for the future of volunteerism. Well done Molly.

SPORTS NEWS Clunes Football Netball Club Newsby Warren Anderson

The Clunes Under 13 B Netball and Under 12 Football recently competed in the CHFL Lightning Premiership.

In the netball the girls had a great day. They played a gainst Buninyong, Creswick and Ballan. Although we did not win any of our games, the girls showed great sk i l l s and sportsmanship on the court. Once again I was congratulated by other teams on what good sports our gir ls are , which we can all be very proud of. I would like to thank Kath for making sure I was organised, Georgia for umpiring, Zac for scoring and all the families for coming and supporting the girls. - Michelle Stinchcombe

In the football the kids were the heroes on the day for sure ! Ever y child had a go and really played well. A special shout out to Smythesdale for lending us a few kids for two of our matches .
