mccsHH Issue #6
July 2014
Kati, who is a Prevention & Education Specialist for the Behavioral Health Program, Marine & Family Services here at Henderson Hall, keeps busy promoting and teachING classes on everything from marriage to stress relief to how to recognize jerk behavior when dating. We asked her a few questions...
Where do you consider home? “Home” for me has always been wherever the military sends me. However, my family and southern roots are planted in the small town of Kernersville, NC.
If you could live anywhere, where? Anywhere the map turns blue! I love coastal areas and dream of having a charming beach bungalow one day.
What is your dream job? Though it sounds “cliché”, I’m currently in my dream job! I love being a Social Worker, and the Prevention & Education piece of what I do brings such a sense of inspiration, advocacy, creativity, and purpose.
Favorite food? Anything lemon flavored. Especially lemon sorbet and lemon meringue pie.
Doughnuts: cake or yeast? Yeast, and only Krispy Kreme.
How you would like to be remembered? As a dedicated, positive, and inspiring person, who leaves a little sparkle everywhere she goes.
Most inspirational/favorite book? There are many, but currently I’ve enjoyed Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg, and Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman’s Soul by John and Staci Eldredge
Favorite drink? Cheerwine. If you’re from North Carolina, you know what I’m talking about.
Your hero/heroine? My kindergarten teacher, Ms. Bryant. You truly do learn everything you need to know in life in kindergarten. She has been an inspiration in much of what I have done throughout my life and into adulthood.
Favorite color? Purple
Life motto? “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are.” – E.E. Cummings- A close second would be, “Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.” – Margaret Thatcher
Sports team you root for? Duke Blue Devils
Favorite holiday? Christmas and New Years! I love the spirit of the season and sense of joy that comes along with the festivities.

PCIT is fun for both the parent and child.
Most parents understand the importance of the first years of their child’s life in terms of emotional, intellectual, physical and psychological growth and development. But the first years are also critical to developing a positive parent-child relationship that will set the stage for a life time of positive experiences. If you want to improve your relationship with your child, PCIT might be your answer.
Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is a short-term, specialized behavior management program designed for children ages 2 to 7 who are experiencing the following behavioral and/or emotional difficulties:
• Refuse/defy adult requests• Lose temper easily• Steal things• Destroy things• Start fights/hurt others• Have difficulty staying seated• Have difficulty playing quietly• Have difficulty taking turns• History of abuse• Adjustment difficulties
Parent Child Interaction Therapy Helps
Research shows that there is a small window of opportunity (ages 2-7 years) when PCIT can be utilized. PCIT is different than most therapies because the therapists coach parents or caregivers until they have developed skills needed to get the child to listen and follow directions. PCIT focuses on improving the parent-child relationship by increasing the child’s self-esteem, reducing anger and frustration and helping with attention concentration and organization. Families often notice changes within a few weeks of beginning therapy and children change their behavior both at home and at school. And finally, PCIT can contribute to reducing parenting stress.
Henderson Hall’s Behavioral Health Branch Counselors and New Parent Support Program Home Visitors are a resource for providing PCIT to military families. To contact them, please call 703-614-7204.
