DOWN MEMORY LANE. . . . . .

Guest Speaker at the.. 6 June (D-Day 56 years

on) Meeting of the VMVC was theVictorian State Secretar of theRats of Tobru Association, MrMuray Bowles (2/24 Btn) whojoinedup at 17, and whose photo

is among those on the walls oftheRats of Tobru HalL. Muray gave

a fascinating personal account ofhis experiences during the niemonth Siege of Tobru in 1941.

It must have been early April of '41

that Murray and his2/24 Battalionmates were proceeding in convoyalong the Dérna Road when wordcame down the line to tur aroundand head back to Tobru.

Six black specks appeared in thesky and someone shouted "Itsallright, they're ours!" Everyonestaed cheering and waving, then

six Stuas screamed down on themand properly set aböut thecolum. Someone said "Cripes

Bowlsy, if they're ours, this lookslike being a long war!"

Muray's lot walked backto Tobruand took over the old Italianfortifications that encircled theseaside port. An edict came downfrom a General that there was to beno surender. (You can see thesewords under the Rats ofTobrumotto in the ROTA halL. )

Murray said that the enemy'sfailure to take Tobru was the firstreversal for the all conqueringDAK forces (Deutches AfrkaKorps).

It probably saved Egyt and theSuez Canal for the Alles, but itwas a tough time. Every morngat seven, 100 Stuas would comeover and lay their eggs, returng atnoon; and at dusk they'd be back todo the same thing. That went on

right throughoutthe siege.

Muray reckons he earned thePolish Medal, which the suriving

Rats are to be presented with at aceremony in late June, when hestripped off to save a fully kittedPole who fell into the water whilstdisembarking at Tobru. Muraywas nearly court marialled by anEnglish Lieutenant for deserting hispost, but luckily an AustralianCaptain intervened.

A patrol going oulat Tobruk

Muray paid special trbute to thework of the Royal Navy who keptthe life-line open to the beleagueredport, runnng the gauntlet oftheLuftaffe's attacks.

He also spoke highly not only ofthe men of the 9th Division, but oftheir compatriots in the English, theGurkas and the Poles.

DOWN MEMORY LANE. . .. . .

Muray also spoke of the respectand, in many cases, the frendshipsthat have endured since with theirfoes, the men of the Afrika Korps, and reunions, both in Germany andAustralia are happening stil.

Often too it was the humorousincidents that kept them going. They were riding in an openbacked truck one day when 'BurdiaBil' the Italian's huge canon waslobbing shells around, one causingthe driver to put the vehicle into aculvert - out the back they flew inall directions - up comes the Ser-geant . . . . "Who gave you menpermission to leave the vehicle?"

0".

~. they played in those dark days, was obvious- they were a terrficbunch of fellows. Unfortnately

the numbers are diminishing - theystil have 450 on the books.

It is their wish that the ROTA Hallshould, in time, be passed on tosomeone who cares for theheritage and that it be preserved asit is forever.

The VMVC members said"Here" "Here" in their acclama-tion.

ANOTHER TIME, ANOTHER PLACE - VIETNAM(Paras from "The Screaming Eagle" Vol IV, No 5, March 1,1971, the offcial Information Sheet of

IOIst Airborne Division (Airmobile)

101 st Returns to the A Shau ValleyAmerican forces returned to the A Shau Valley recently after nearly an 18 month absence, The day was hot andclear - a switch from the cold rain and mist of the monsoon weather that had plagued Alled troops in northernMilitary Region 1 since October.

The 2ndBn, (Ambl.), 327th Inf. led the return of the 101st which began February 10 with the reopening of Firebase

Rendezvous at the edge of the valley. Members of the 'No Slack' Battalion jumped from helicopters onto the hilL.They were quickly followed by a team of Pathfinders from the 1 01 st Avn. Gp" a mine-sweep team from the 326thEng. Bn. (Ambl.), a company of the2/327th and an advance part of cannoneers.

Cpt Peter O'Halloran, San Francisco, a company commander, reported the hill to be heavily booby trapped. The engineers worked swiftly to eliminate the hazards as the infantry secured the firebase perimeter while thePathfinders immediately set up a communications station and directed the continuous flow of air traffic.

The reopening of Firebase Rendezvous marked the first time American forces had occupied that position sinceSeptember 1969.

EOD Does 'Bang Up' .JobCAMP EAGLE - A 750 pound bomb lays undeton3.tedin the jungles; a booby trap is set menacingly along apath; a mine field is detected along a friendly road. All these dangers and more are part of a day's work forthe Explosive Ordnance Demolition (EOD) teams op-erating with the 101 st.

A~,,~

The 287th Ordnance Detachment personnel describetheir job as "rendering safe any dangerous ordnance",which may include anything from a 60 mm mortarround to the largest bombs used in the Republic ofVietnam.

One specialty of the EOD team is the handling of dudrounds which are dangerous in two respects. First, they can be accidently detonated by the troops, andsecond, the explosives can be used by the enemy forbooby traps. A 750 pound bomb could provide theenemy with as many as 100 booby traps.

Australian Army CWO Tony Jordan, attached advisor fromMelbourne, takes a rocket from CPT Ronald Knight, Bedford, Ind.,as the EOD tem unloads part of more than 10 tons of agingexplosives. for destruction. The first step in approaching undetonated explosives

is to secure the area and search for booby traps. If the enemy sees a dud round he knows the EOD team wil soon be onits way and he wil booby trap the area. Animportntfactor in determining how an explosive wil be handled is the fuzing. Different fuzes, such as delay and impact detonating, areapt to be found. After locating dud rounds, the EOD team clears the area and uses C-4 explosives to destroy them. A lot of

people wouldn't have the job, but the men of the EOD teams know that their work saves lives and prevents serious injur toAmerican and friendly forces, and have dedicated themselves to the task of helping to prevent injures to the ground troops,

The "Screaming Eagle" was provided by Tony 'Slim' Jordan. Thank you very much Tony.Editor

WARBURTON WINTER FEST CAR DISPLAY - SUNDAY 2 JULY 2000

OK it was very, very cold. i

left Ringwood at 7.40am to drive to Warburton, but what a wonderfultime to be out inthe country; beautiful country-

side covered in frost, with a thick mist rising fromthe fields and valleys as the early morning sun came overthe hils.

We sat in the sun and enjoyed the crowd and activities andquestions and answers about our vehicles and Club.I am pleased to say on behalf of our small attendance that

Graham Jacobs won the prize for the Best Pre-1950Vehicle with his 'Jeep 44' ~ Congratulations Graham.

After another eventful Club outing for the few members

I arrived just before 9,00 am to find three others in their who chose to attend, we left about 2.40 pm after theJeeps had already chosen a good place to park (at the mar- grand parade.shall's behest). Don Ashton arrived

on my tail and weparked in line. The parking area was higher than the main

road, so we all had a good view of on-going proceedingsand activities.

I arrived home about 3.30 pm, pleased with the day'sevents but disappointed that more of our members don'tattend Club events such as this.

Vehicles attending - A Brooks Jeep B Brown JeepM Kaukas Jeep G Jacobs Jeepo Ashton Land Rover

Lots and lots of cars - well over 100 - of all makes andsizes. Of interest was a display of vintage bicycles - in par-ticular, a German First World War one that had aninner rim, on that were fixed all round small valve springs, placed on top of them was a laminated steel tyre (all thisowing to the lack of rubber). SCOUTS COMMUNICATIONS BADGE WEEKEND - 8 & 9 JULY

After a rather embarassing tow

start (thans to AlfBrooks forthe tow), we both arrived atGilwell Park at approximately

10.30 hrs where we met up with LionelSmart and Greg Nicholls.

The campsite allocated came with asheltered area complete with water, powerand an electric BBQ; also a drm andplenty offirewood for our camp fire which, with the weather on the chily side, was litat once.

The afternoon was spent answeringquestions from scouting groups who werethere to obtain their communicationsbadges on successfully completing varioustests. This continued into late Saturday

night.

Cooking Satuday night's meal wascancelled following an invitation to dinewith the Scout Leaders (a three coursediner!) it sure beat cooking our own.

After the activities finished, the rest oftheevening was spent around a roaring campfire swapping yarns til around 23.30 hrs, before retirng.

On saying our good-byes to Lionel andGreg and the Scouts, Alf and I travelledacross to Yarra Junction to pick up somewine and then stopped at Launching Placewhere members of the 'T' Model Ford Clubwere taking a break.

After browsing over the old timers it wasoffhome, arriving back at 16.00 hrs.

Sunday morning meant an early start as the Vehicles attending -first group of Scouts were through at 09.00hrs with the last group at 12.00 hrs.

After lunch it was time to break camp andattend the presentation of badges for theScouts who passed their communicationtests (including four VMVC members).
