Dear Friends, If you are reading this, it can only mean two things: 1) My summer has reached its end, or 2) Fr. Tom is out of town and needed someone to fill in his space in the bulletin. The answer is actually a combination of both of those answers. Sadly, another summer has come to an end, and this means I must bid all of you farewell. I thank you all for opening your doors to me, some more literally than others. (I did have a goal to shrink my stomach this summer. I thank you for allowing me to NOT achieve that goal!) Don’t forget that Fr. Tom has to eat as well! I think God works in mysterious ways, and seeing the connectedness that this place has to my hometown of Opelousas was a bit surreal. There was a little bit of home found here amongst the bigger city of Baton Rouge. If everyone from Opelousas and the surrounding area winds up here, I wonder if I may not be assigned here in the future…get your prayers in now if you wish otherwise! This summer I had the opportunity to sit in on meetings with you, worship with you, and visit with you, among other things, such as handiwork around the rectory and “remodeling” the office I was in. I really think that this parish knows where it is and where it is going, and you are blessed to have someone in Fr. Tom who shares in this vision and does what he can to move it forward. There is an intimacy here in this parish that connects you all, and that is something I appreciated about my time here. As I leave to go back to seminary, I would just like to offer a little advice. Live out your Catholic identity in everything that you do. In every encounter with another person, in everything that you do, live out your core as a Catholic person. This world is hurting and we are all in need of being healed in some way. As Pope Francis said in one of his interviews, "I see clearly that the thing the Church needs most today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful; it needs nearness, proximity. I see the Church as a field hospital after battle." Let the sacraments be your medicine. Let the faith guide you in your decisions. Allow the Church to act in the way Christ intended it to, so that we may be able to one day be united with Him in heaven.

LIFE TOGETHER Again, thank you all for being so welcoming to me this summer. You will be in my prayers and I hope to be in yours. I will try to occasionally pop in and say hello from time to time. Until then, I look forward to seeing you in the Eucharist. - Carlos Lucito

Bible Timeline Gospel of Matthew

Building on the foundation laid in The Great Adventure bible Timeline, this next study in the Great Adventure series, Adventures in Matthew: The King and His Kingdom by Jeff Cavins, focuses on Jesus as the fulfillment of the promises of the Old Testament. It also touches on Jesus' establishment of the Church as the Kingdom of Heaven on earth, making it an excellent introduction to the Great Adventures study on the Acts of the Apostles. Set in the rich context of Jesus' Jewish culture, this study will help you understand the universal truths of the Kingdom of God; it will help you understand more fully God's will for us today.

•Go deeper into the story of Salvation History and discover the riches of the Gospel message

•Enrich your spiritual life through a better understanding of the life of Christ.

•Develop a greater appreciation for the Church and the sacraments as you see them being instituted by our Lord.

Come to a deeper understanding of your role in the Kingdom of God through the Beatitudes and all of the teachings of Christ.

For more information call Patsy Burgess,OFS at 225.907.8248 or email [email protected].

Greater Adventure Bible Timeline The Bible Timeline

The Bible Timeline is the introductory study of The Great Adventure. This remarkable journey through the Bible gives participants the "big picture" they need to put the entire story into context. Salvation history is covered from its beginning in Genesis through the coming of Christ and the establishment of the Catholic Church. A clear understanding of the underlying Scriptural narrative is essential to all Bible reading and study, and for this reason The Bible Timeline is the first foundational study in The Great Adventure Bible Study Series. A combination of individual reading and study, group discussion, and lecture commentary guides participants as they read through the 14 narrative books of the Bible and discover the meaning of each in light of the whole. Participants will:

•Read for themselves the 14 narrative books of the Bible — the ones that tell the story — in chronological order. •Discover the major people, places, events, and themes of the Bible •Learn God's marvelous plan of salvation history and see how your faith story fits into "His-story." •Develop a strong foundation for further Bible reading and study •Gain a greater appreciation for the Scripture readings they hear in Mass. •Encourage one another as they learn together how God's Word applies to their lives.

•Study key Old Testament passages in light of their fulfillment in Christ

For more information call Patsy Burgess,OFS at 225.907.8248 or email [email protected].
