Year graduated from Kohler

High School: 1993

Post-high school education: St

Norbert College: Education (non

complete) George Williams Col-

lege: Business Leadership/Hospi-

tality

Degrees: Just need to finish that

one random science class that

never transferred.

Occupation: Corporate Properties

Manager/Estate Manager: Private

Service (16 years in private serv-

ice/hospitality)

Fondest memories growing up in

Kohler: Too many “fondest mem-

ories” to count. Wonderful to grow

up in a huge playground. Close-

ness of friends, accessibility to

everything. Kohler Pool, The

Bowl, walking to and from school,

Sports Core, Youth Center, the

Trestle, kick the can, SGLO. When

I look at my group of friends from

Kohler, I always say that if we met

today, we would probably NEVER

be friends. The thing with a small

class, small town is that friend re-

sources are limited, so you work

with what you have...and these

people become like family to you.

Different, but sharing so much in

common. The close knit commu-

nity is really something magical.

Summers spent at the Kohler Pool,

as a youth and then working....the

pool will always be my number

one. Running around town with no

plans or agenda, making our own

fun. Friends, friends, friends.

Many details that I cannot share!

What was most memorable

about attending Kohler Schools,

and how did the education at

KHS help this grad attain their

goals?

So much is memorable about at-

tending Kohler Schools. First, it is

the friends and activities and

sports, and music classes. How

fortunate we were to have pro-

grams that everyone could partici-

pate in. All of these things built

skills like team work, confidence,

and accountability. Things that I

really treasure having learned. My

education doesn’t seem as signifi-

cant, but certainly I came out pre-

pared enough to succeed when I

chose to. Interestingly, Home Eco-

nomics and Family Living classes

probably had the greatest impact

on my career. I can vividly remem-

ber the cooking classes and com-

petitions. I remember making

manicotti in seventh grade and I

went home and made that meal for

my family. We decorated fancy

cakes, planned menus and shopped

for items. Today I manage chefs

and menus and events, and mag-

nificent estates. I work in situa-

tions with kids and families and

high profile guests...and really, it

all started with that manicotti

dish.....or was it the bran muffins?

I also have found myself in a jam

more than once where I was thank-

ful I could whip up an impromptu

cake at work and decorate it like a

pro.

National History Day is an op-

portunity for students in grades 6-

12 to research in depth a historical

topic, person, or event; create a

thesis, and defend it by creating a

project. The five categories in

which they can create their project

is a performance, an exhibit, a

documentary, a website, or writing

a paper. NHD is an empowering

program which allows students to

really delve into their passions and

interests in history.

Kohler Middle School earned

three spots in the National Com-

petition which was held in Mary-

land/Washington D.C. from June

14-18 this summer.

Eighth grade student, Kate

O’Leary, competed in the individ-

ual performance category with her

project called “Elizabeth Black-

well: Changing the Face of the

Medical Field.” Nicole Koenecke

and Hannah Neist, also eighth

grade students, competed in the

group exhibit category with their

project called “Mahatma Gandhi:

The Person, The Hero, The Leg-

end.” Eighth grade students Grace

Unger and Cecelia Zielke com-

peted with their group exhibit ti-

tled “William Lloyd Garrison: The

Leadership and Legacy of an

American Abolitionist.”

Congratulations to all five stu-

dents who gave their personal

bests at the National History Day

competition.

years in which they have partici-

AUGUST 15, 2015 = KOHLER VILLAGER KOHLERVILLAGER.COM4

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (Aug. 12,

2015) - In celebration of the 2015

PGA Championship, the PGA of

America Spouses and PGA TOUR

Wives Association joined forces

today with PGA REACH and the

Kohler Co. at Bookworm Gardens

– a local garden space that pro-

motes youth literacy and learning

– to garden for a great cause.

Bookworm Gardens is divided

into six areas – called Gateways –

that are organized by theme. Dur-

ing the event, Nina Kohler, wife of

David Kohler, General Chair of

the 2015 PGA Championship and

Kohler Co. President & CEO, led

the participating organizations in

building a garden space that tells

the story of “Connor the Caddie,”

a new, limited-edition children's

book written by local author Ul-

rich Koberstein and illustrated by

his wife, Christina Koberstein. The

children’s book is available at

Bookworm Gardens, The Empo-

rium at The American Club and

Wisconsin Trader at the Shops at

Woodlake Kohler.

The participating organizations

were guided by Jennifer Sprague

of the PGA of America Spouses

and Kate Rose of the PGA TOUR

Wives Association. This is the

third year these groups have lent

their time to positively impact a

PGA Championship host site. In

2013, the organizations con-

structed a Habitat for Humanity

home for a deserving family in

Rochester, N.Y. Last year, the

wives partnered with Blessings in

a Backpack to plant gardens that

would be utilized in the program,

feeding underserved schoolchild-

ren in Louisville, Ky.

“Through the combined efforts

of the PGA of America Spouses,

PGA TOUR Wives Association,

Kohler Co. and PGA REACH, we

are so pleased that the 2015 PGA

Championship will leave a posi-

tive legacy in our host commu-

nity," said PGA President Derek

Sprague. "The PGA of America is

thrilled to be a part of this special

event, which will impact the lives

of children for years to come.”

Funds raised by PGA REACH,

the charitable foundation of the

PGA of America, during the 2015

National Car Rental PGA REACH

Charity Pro-Am, which was held

in June at Whistling Straits, aided

in supporting this year's collabora-

tive project. Additional proceeds

from the charitable golf event ben-

efited four Southeast Wisconsin

organizations – Bookworm Gar-

dens, PGA HOPE with the Wis-

consin PGA Foundation, the

Caddie and Leadership Academy,

golf programs in Sheboygan

County Schools and PGA Junior

League Golf. In the book, one of

the famed Scottish blackface sheep

that roams Whistling Straits-young

Connor-dreams of becoming a

caddie in the 2015 PGA Champi-

onship.

The 18-scene book is cleverly

structured to mimic the 18 holes

found on a golf course and is full

of colorful artwork depicting Con-

nor's adventures. In addition, a

replica Whistling Straits Club-

house was constructed to comple-

ment the garden.

“Our intention was to commem-

orate the positive impact the PGA

Championship has brought to our

community, to honor the artistry of

my father-in-law, Herb Kohler and

his dear friend Pete Dye, and to

create a wonderful learning space

for the children and families of

Sheboygan County,” said Nina

Kohler. “It has been an honor and

a pleasure to work with the tal-

ented and passionate people in-

volved with this project, from the

designers and craftsmen to the

PGA TOUR Wives, the PGA of

America Spouses and PGA

REACH. Our hope is that this

space will serve in bringing joy to

those who visit it and introduce

children of all ages to the wonder-

ful game of golf.”

“We are thrilled to be partnering

with the PGA of America Spouses,

PGA TOUR Wives Association,

Kohler Co. and PGA REACH,”

said Elizabeth Wieland, Executive

Director of Bookworm Gardens.

“Bookworm Gardens is a place

where children can see books

come to life and embrace the

magic of reading, and the support

of these organizations means our

gardens will continue to grow and

inspire young minds.”

Announcing a limited edition golf-themed children’sbook in timing with the 2015 PGA Championship(August 10-16)

“Connor the Caddie”

(www.ConnortheCaddie.com) is

sure to delight dreamers

and golfers and those who

are both with a whimsical

story of a Scottish Black-

face Sheep named Connor

who yearns to be a caddie.

Written by parents Ul-

rich Koberstein and color-

fully illustrated by self-taught

artist Christina Koberstein of

Kohler, Wis., “Connor the Caddie”

is now available as a limited edi-

tion 9”x13” inch hardcover book.

The perfect size to fit in a golf bag!

The settings of the tale span

from Whistling Straits in Kohler,

Wis. to the O’Hare Airport in

Chicago to the home of golf St.

Andrews, Scotland. The book fea-

tures 18 scenes noted by a num-

bered pin flag page marker that

concludes with Connor re-

turning to Whistling Straits

to realize his dream to cad-

die at the 2015 PGA

Championship.

A true labor of love, the

book stems from a late

night request from the cou-

ple’s 6-year-old son for an original

bedtime story. By writing this

book Ulrich also discovered that

storytelling runs in his family as he

remembers the imaginative tales

his grandfather once told him.

The story comes alive at Book-

worm Gardens in Sheboygan,

Wis., where visitors to this vibrant,

playful garden based on children's

literature, can enjoy the newly un-

veiled “Connor the Caddie” ex-

hibit featuring a miniature

Whistling Straits Clubhouse and a

cast iron Connor created at the

Kohler Co. factory. Complimen-

tary admission.

In April, Sports Core Health and

Racquet Club initiated the first

phase of the largest renovation un-

dertaking in its 36-year history – a

complete makeover of the chang-

ing rooms, showers, restrooms and

steam rooms in its lower level. As

of July 10, and nine days ahead of

schedule, the renovation of the

Men’s area was completed. Sports

Core allowed members to tour the

space which featured photos from

before construction began and key

features and benefits were high-

lighted. Among the improvements,

a more spacious changing space,

increased locker count, new

shower experiences, an upgraded

steam room and aesthetic improve-

ments throughout the space.

Phase II of the project began

with demolition of the Ladies’

changing and shower area on

Monday, July 13. This phase of the

renovation is scheduled to take less

time than the first, as planned dem-

olition is not as robust as the Men’s

space. The team overseeing the

project anticipates construction of

Phase II will go just as smoothly as

Phase I and is optimistic all Sports

Core members will return to their

designated spaces by fall as sched-

uled. At that time, the third and

final phase will begin as the pool

walkway, tennis court hallway and

other common areas are updated.

To see before and after photos,

stay up to date on progress of the

project, or be aware of offerings
