What you might not know is these children and these families are part of a history of educating, nurturing and forming children and families that spans half a century. Fifty years later, the church and the Preschool are celebrating the lives and families and communities who have been blessed by this important ministry. “It is a support to parents and in the last few years a strong support to grandparents who are either raising their grandchildren or supporting their own children in raising their children,” FCUMC Preschool Director Susan Todd said. “It is not taking the place of Bible School or Sunday School and it doesn’t need to. You can still minister to children in important ways--that they are important, that they have value, that they have worth.” What began by welcoming a pre-existing program has evolved over the years into its current ministry. Although the Preschool operates within the church building, most of the children and families it serves come from outside the worshiping community of FCUMC. Not surprisingly, many families throughout the years have joined the church after first hearing about the Preschool. Susan Todd says, however, that ultimately the effectiveness of the Preschool’s ministry is not judged by number of families that come into the church, but by the need it fills for children and families in our community. “It values young kids and it says that they are important. It is about learning in community; learning how to be in community. Educationally it is important; but it is not so much about letters and numbers, but it is about relationships and how to build them. I can’t imagine my life without it.” Celebrating 50 Years: 1964-2014 Fountain City United Methodist Church Preschool Loving Children. Serving Families. Teaching Our Future. Pastor Cornered

What did Jesus mean when He said, “Whoever loses his life for my sake, will find it?” How often do we stop to consider the commitments that we made when we joined Fountain City UMC or the commitment that Jesus expects of us when we profess Him as our Lord?

During the month of October we will address such questions as we examine the series “Living Generously.” Each week during the Sunday School hour and worship we will watch a brief film about the Donovan family as they seek to understand what it means to live the words of Jesus. Each week we will see a glimpse of their journey as they take risks, experience suffering and joy and find themselves transformed by the call of Christ.

Life is busy, and it is easy for us to become distracted by the many demands that we face. We have been blessed in countless ways…but life has a way of making us anxious, worried, self-protective or even callous. In the process, we often lose that attitude of gratefulness for all God has done in our lives and in our church. It is my sincere hope that this journey prompts all of us to take an inventory of the blessings God has entrusted to us, to be more aware of the goodness of God’s presence among us and to live grateful lives.

On Sunday, October 26 we will all have opportunity to demonstrate how we have been impacted by this focus as we hold our Commitment Sunday. I ask that you join me in praying that God will prepare our hearts to see afresh the generosity of God and to take new steps of generosity in our own lives.

Your Gifts: Commitment Sunday“Find our how much God has given you and from it take what you need; the remainder is needed by

others.” – St. Augustine

During the month of September we explored how David’s life could provide a template for us as disciples of Jesus trying to grow in spiritual maturity and depth. As Christians, we live our lives in thanks to and response to the love of a generous God. Consequently, in October, we will be exploring how living a lifestyle of generosity that is rooted in our faith is a vital component of a mature Christianity.

We will be studying generosity during our Sunday School classes and also will focus in worship on the way a generous life can not only make us more thankful but can also allow us to participate in the life and in the kingdom of God. We will conclude this focus by receiving financial commitments for 2015 in worship on Sunday, October 26.

To live faithfully by definition involves commitment. During July we committed to sharing our faith out of love. In September, we committed time to serve in leadership during the next year. In October, we look forward to committing our finances to make disciples and to continue to change lives in our community and all the way around the world. The people of Fountain City UMC have shown their faithfulness to God again and again and we look forward to the ways in which we will demonstrate how we will allow God to use us in 2015.
