the scoop AUGUST 1 2012 This Friday is Moffett Cup day for our Year 3 ,4, 5 & 6 students! The weather has turned a corner and the hard work and organisation behind the scenes by our sports coordinators and Friends of the School group have set the foundation for a successful and enjoyable day. I look forward to seeing a lot of you out there supporting your children in this significant Southern Zone event. You will see from the photo above that we had some of our children across our Year 3, 4, 5, & 6 groups visit Enrich (which is the ILT subsidised Gifted and Talented Learning Centre) on Monday. Each school in the ILT Foundation zone gets allocated some days, depending on roll size, throughout the year to give other children the chance for a workshop learning day at this wonderful facility. Each year the ILT fund the majority of the running costs for this centre, its resources and its staffing, with the school and the parents of those who normally attend making a contribution towards the per student cost. We are certainly fortunate to be part of the ILT Foundation zone and to have a significant contribution from them annually towards this and other educational initiatives in our area. This week I have been busy collating the responses from the survey I conducted during the interview process. Thank you to all the parents who took the time to give some feedback on the different aspects of school life via that survey and for the many different conversations I had. I see it as a significant opportunity to get a realistic perception of how our families are feeling. I, and our teaching team, have very high standards and expectations for our school just as you do. Getting your feedback is an important part of acknowledging the strengths of our school and getting some ideas of what we could improve on. If you did not get a chance to give some feedback and would like to do so then please email me - [email protected] - and I will forward you the link. Once the collation and analysis of complete I will post this information on the school website. Have a great rest of the week. This Friday is Moffett Cup day for our Year 3 ,4, 5 & 6 students!

Each school in the ILT Foundation zone gets allocated some days, depending on roll size, throughout the year to give other children the chance for a workshop learning day at this

wonderful facility.

Tip from the internet that we have introduced to the medical supplies at school. Keep some small wet sponges in a ziplock bag in your freezer - and you will always have a great ice pack that won't drip all over the place as it thaws!

Week 3 Term 3MANUKA shared the best way to stay healthy and keep the bugs away by performing a handwashing song with the help of the 'wiggles' in practice assembly. We gave out the message of washing your hands after blowing your nose, going to the toilet and before you eat. I have put the clip onto our blog. (Access through the Myross Bush website). You will notice that when your child is 'leader' for the day they will be bringing home Q-Bear to help them collect ideas about living things. Thanks for your support - the home school connection to their learning is so valuable for them to apply their learning to real life contexts.

KOWHAI It has been exciting to discover some interesting facts about living creatures that come from eggs in our big book this week. Did you know baby spiders are called 'spiderlings'? We have been beginning to discover the 7 things that all living things need to be alive. Ask us! We'd love to tell you about it! Q-bear is coming home to help us discover some living creatures in our home environments too. We are also thinking and talking about the Olympic games- keep an eye on your homework book for your day to bring a piece of news about it. We have started some new maths homework. Doing a little bit and often helps us to consolidate new skills and reach our learning goals, so thank you for your support!

RIMU Room Rimu were lucky enough to to join with Rata to listen to Mrs Aurik's brother who told us about skinks and how they need protected by a large fence. This week we are starting to send Q Bear home with a camera so that the children can take a photo of a living thing. We have been looking at living things and know that they need to: Move, Respire (breathe), show Sensitivity (has smell, sight, touch, hearing or taste), Growth, Reproduction (make more of themselves), Excretion (get rid of waste), Nutrition (eats). We have shortened this to the anagram MRS GREN. Have fun taking the photos.

Certificates: Sacha Horton, Logan Thornton

RATA Last week it was great to meet with you and plan together how we can make the most of your child's learning opportunities. On Monday we had a visit from my brother who is on the Otago Conservation Board. He came to talk to us about Otago skinks and how they are endangered animals. He also told us about the work they are doing to protect the Otago skinks. You can see some photos and read more about this on our blog. Have a great week Evelyn

MIRO Last week Miro shared their speeches and gave each other feedback and feed forward. Myself and their peers gave voted and we chose the top three to share with Totara. Adam was first place, Joel second and Grace and Harriet tied for third. Impressive speaking everyone, well done:)On Monday 5 children had the wonderful opportunity to attend an animation workshop at Enrich.• I liked making the animation - Grace

• I enjoyed working in my group because they were encouraging - Emma• We made lego animations and put them on imovie. Our group did a police chase - Blake• It was cool going to enrich because there were lots of computers - BenHave a fantastic week

Certificates: Anneka Ivanov, Jackson Herrick

TOTARAI had the privilege to go to Enrich on Monday with a group of Wonderful Myross Bush School children to play with making animation movies. What a fun and jam-packed day, I was so proud to be the teacher that went alongside these students as they all worked so well and represented our school to a high level. Well done! Meanwhile in Team Totara we have presented super speeches and have enjoyed presenting them to the whole class. The finalists went on to present to Miro and Totara and then to the entire senior syndicate. I always enjoy Parent /teacher /child conferences and this time was no exception! Thank you for all your wonderful support, and keep working hard to achieve those goals! Remember that we are here for you and are only an e-mail, call or quick catch up away.

Certificates: Eilish McLeod, Ella Wylie and Danja Jamieson for writing and presenting great speeches with awesome eye contact, facts, jokes and gesture. Well done!

KAURI With the Olympics starting and Moffett Cup at the end of the week, we are very excited about sports in general! Your posters are looking fantastic. It's been awesome meeting so many parents/caregivers at the interviews last week, thank you for your time. In numeracy we are focusing on fractions and our inquiry learning is around habitats and ecosystems. This will help us to explain how all living things have an impact on each other. I am impressed with how Kauri are working ‘soo’ well together and are inclusive to all, well done students! Miss Duncan

MATAI (Rm 9) Ben M

• I can’t wait till the speeches are read in the finals. I wonder who the two people are that will go to the inter school comp! Ben M• I’m very excited to give my speech in front of the senior school on Wednesday. I’ve been practicing hard and I don’t need my cue cards! Cassie G
