    Message from The Principal’s Desk

Sept 4th, 2019 – there was chaos and despair all over Mumbai, except DBIS. The Management, teachers and support staff, as one, put their minds and hearts towards alleviating anguish and loneliness of their young wards. Constantly talking, playing games, banishing hunger and quenching thirst to the point that the young ones were so comfortable that they did not want to go back home. A few parents who managed to reach the school, adopted all the children as their own, lavishing their actions towards care and comfort. They dipped their hands into their pockets, without hesitation, pampering the gastronomic needs of children who simply loved it. DBIS teachers put their children before themselves and gave them what every loving parent would. On that day, by their actions, they taught a lesson of a life time to all the children and parents, humanity first, all be responsible till suitably relieved.

Sept 11th, 2019 –organized chaos, fun, laughter, frolicking. Happy Teachers’ Day. The teachers let their hair down, the students and the parents too. The parents showcased their talents and proved once again that they are as talented as their children!

DBIS teachers wore their social avatar dressed as Bollywood’s iconic characters, effectively demonstrating that they are good in whatever they do. The organization (despite the stressful events just a few day back), the meticulous execution speaks volumes of the character of DBIS to take in their stride, the rough and the smoothed, without ruffling feathers. The coordination between the school, students and parents was seamless in their presentation. The students and parents gave from their heart “thankfulness” to the teachers of DBIS for being with them through thick and thin. DBIS teachers are an embodiment of the spirit of a guru and may we continue to be blessed.

Happy Teacher’s Day! As we look at professions in a changing world there is one profession which will stand the test of time and that is of a ‘Teacher’. The DBIS teacher will hold your hand and take the brunt of the heat and sunshine, while you walk in the cool comfort of their shadow, confident of their protection. As time goes by, and your shadow lengthens, the teacher smoothly moves into a higher gear of mentorship, protective, yet granting enough latitude for independent growth. DBIS teachers belong to this elite group of special teachers who have gone beyond the call of mere duty to one of ownership, a commitment to care.

The IBDP visiting team had conducted formal interviews with the school Director, the Principal, the IBDP Coordinator, teachers, staff, librarian, groups of students, parents and others who will be involved in the programme and had conducted the tour of school facilities.

The report is tremendously positive, effectively recognizes many of our forte’s, accomplishments and also provides us with some useful recommendations to help us improve.

To quote the Principal, Ms. Meena Saldhana, “Our school philosophy is aligned with that of the IBO.

IBDP authorisation journey has highlighted the proficiency, sincerity and commitment of our staff. This process has also reiterated the high happiness quotient among the members of DBIS family.”

IBDP report on DBIS’s accreditation, pointed to special commendations. Some of the comments from our authorisation report include:

The DBIS Governing body, Director, Principal, Pedagogical leadership and staff demonstrate wide understanding of and commitment to the approaches to teaching and learning.

The IBDP Coordinator, supported by the Principal and the Director provides extensive support for the in-school training of the IBDP teachers in order to implement the programme.

IBDP Teachers have planned collaboratively within and across subjects to ensure that students will have a coherent learning experience.

All teachers demonstrate a good understanding of Theory of Knowledge. DBIS is also commended for its attention to vertical and horizontal planning

The visiting team had also appreciated our commitment to developing an inclusive, happy learning environment among school community members, our use of ICT and our community outreach initiatives.

Tremendous hard work had been put by our dedicated DBIS staff with full support from the Director, the Principal and the administrative team to meet the IB’s authorization requirements.

We look forward to a meaningful, engaging and fruitful IB Diploma Programme at DBIS!

We have started our admission process for IBDP. Our first Class of IBDP will graduate in 2022 with curriculum delivery commencing in June 2020.

    IBDP AUTHORIZATION REPORT

We are pleased to announce that DBIS is now an authorised IBDP school.

In order to become an IB World School offering an IB programme, schools must demonstrate that certain practices and programme requirements are in place. On 19th and 20th August, IBDP team had visited DBIS to verify the school’s claim that it had taken all the necessary actions and is prepared to become an IB World School.

    GRANDPARENT’S DAY CELEBRATION

It is rightly said, ‘Grandparents are a delightful blend of laughter, caring deeds, wonderful stories and love.’

Our pre-schoolers along with Grade 1 students had the opportunity to spend a day with their grandparents and create some fond memories.

The day started with students welcoming their grandparents by putting sandalwood tikka and sprinkling rose water. As a surprise element, a PPT displaying pictures of them with their grandchildren was shown. This wasn’t all, our students expressed their gratitude by dedicating a song to their beloved dada-dadi, nana-nani. Needless to say, grandparents were touched by the gesture and spoke a few words on the bond they share with their grandchildren. This was followed by them visiting different centres. While some relished the scrumptious South Indian cuisine, others were seen shaking a leg on some foot tapping music. We saw no apprehension when it came to them participating in outdoor games with gusto. The photo booth corner seemed to be most liked by everyone as they were seen donning various accessories and getting themselves clicked with their grandchildren. The icing on the cake was a card made by the grandchildren as a token of love. The day ended on a happy note filled with memories and laughter galore.

DBIS has been conducting ASSET exam since the last two years. This is a skill based test that measures student’s conceptual understanding, benchmarks school’s performance at an international, national and regional level with actionable insights through easy-to-understand reports. This year we conducted ASSET summer series in the month of August. Students of grade 6-9 took the assessment for the subjects - English, Mathematics and Science.

We believe rather than testing student’s memory or their ability to remember formulas and definitions,we try to get students to apply these concepts in various hypothetical situations where a student's higher-order thinking skills are tested. With the help of ASSET reports, teachers can gauge performance of students and their learning problems. This will help them to analyse and work on their strengths and weaknesses for better understanding of concepts.

    WORKSHOP BY DR. STUART KOHLHAGEN

    ON COMPUTATION MATHEMATICS

    Not Your Ordinary Math Workshop

A Mathematics workshop on ‘Computational thinking’ was conducted in the AV Room of Don Bosco International School at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, 3rd September, 2019 by Dr Stuart Kohlhagen. Dr Stuart has worked at Questacon - Australia's National Science and Technology Centre for over 35 years and helped pioneer exhibit development, science demonstrations and shows. He has also been leading the development and delivery of a range of teacher professional development programs within Australia and internationally.

After a brief introduction, Dr Kohlhagen asked the students a few basic questions about Math. He showed the students a chessboard and asked them to find a route to cover all the squares using the chess piece known as a Knight. He then drew a pictorial diagram of the same problem and asked all who were present to find a route to cover all the dots. This activity was easier for all the students compared to the first. This proved that looking at things from a different point of view can be helpful in solving complex-looking problems

We solved many more intriguing puzzles in our groups which helped us work in a team as well as develop critical thinking, problem solving and analytical skills. Dr Kohlhagen’s sense of humour and encouraging behaviour motivated the pupils to think differently and look at the subject ‘Mathematics’ in a completely different perspective.

The event concluded at 4 in the evening. A vote of thanks was proposed by the Assistant Head boy, Shivaditya Pandit

Overall, it was an enriching experience for us, having learnt new strategies and skills and we look forward to many such workshops.

    LEADERSHIP WORKSHOP FOR COUNCIL

A leadership workshop was organized on the 10th of August for the the Senior and Junior Council Members of our school. The workshop was conducted by a renowned counsellor, Mr. Jeevan D’Cunha working with adolescents in the education management industry for nearly 25 years.

In the recently concluded workshop, the student leaders of our school were given the mantra of the ‘know-how’ of leadership which they can utilize to great effect in this upcoming academic year and will also hold them in good stead throughout their life.

    The Workshop

The workshop started off with the students seeing a short video on the A-Z of happiness in life followed by a small discussion. Post this a small round of icebreakers was conducted comprising of a series of fun-filled team games and challenges.

With a discussion, students highlighted the importance of being true to oneself and following one’s ambitions. Through this Mr. Jeevan D’Cunha emphasized that competing with oneself is more important than drawing constant comparisons with others.

In a follow up to the discussion, Council Members were asked to list down their ‘POSITIVE ATTRIBUTES’, ‘SPECIAL INTERESTS’, and ‘HOBBIES’. On the basis of these, they were asked to form a ‘MISSION STATEMENT’ (a goal to be followed and reflected upon throughout the year by the Council Members).

Post a brisk round of discussions, the attention shifted to short-term goal settings that is essential for a good leader. In this segment, the students learnt about and created their own ‘SMART’ goals, which involves an efficient technique that makes a specific, time-bound goal easily attainable and is used widely in the corporate world.

The Council Members were taught the important art of delegating work, which involves the distribution of work among members of a group. This is essential for the members of the Student Council to learn and employ in the long run, considering the numerous House competitions and events that take place all year round.

The best form of learning is having fun and the students did exactly that when they were asked to display the four pillars of delegation through a set of innovative role plays.

This eventful workshop was brought to close just the way it started, on a light note with a series of brain racking team games in which teams had to solve complex word puzzles.

On this note the students left the AV room with truckloads of knowledge giving them the confidence to essay their duties as Council Members and future leaders.

LIGHT AND SOUND INQUIRY- GRADE 5

A TRIP TO THE MAGICAL WORLD OF THEATRE

We the students of Grade 5 are currently exploring the concept of light and sound. Our Speech and Drama teacher Miss Dayle organized a trip for us to visit St. Andrew’s auditorium Bandra. We were taken to see the sound and light arrangements for Ace Productions The Best of Broadway and Beyond. Our objective was to learn about the importance and right execution of light and sound required for any show and particularly the skit for our ongoing assessments. We were accompanied by our homeroom teachers Ms.Nameita and Ms.Roanna. We were enthralled by what we saw! It was all so fascinating and exciting, the console for the light and sound, the spotlights, the side lights and stage lights. We observed so many different props that were made to suit different scenes and their requirements. Like a scene which was supposed to be completely dark they used neon tapes so that the props glow in the dark. I was intrigued by how they chose to brighten or dim the lights for each scene. The coordination of the lights and the right timing for the sound like the music, background music, the use of different mikes is all so important. We all got to see how they practice their dialogues and work effectively as a team. Controlling sound and light may seem very easy but it isn’t. Precision for right timing and calmness to not make a mistake are very essential. It was a unique and exciting experience and we learnt a lot from it. It indeed was a Sunday well spent.
