Transcript of Aug. 24(plant vs. animal cells)
- 1. Biology I Mr. Nettles
2. Agenda- Wednesday, August 24, 2011
- Warm Up 5 min
- Review Activity 10 min
- Daily Lesson 20 min
- Wrap Up (in teams) 10 min
- Begin Homework 15 min
3. Todays Objectives
- I will define the words:vacuole, cell wall, chloroplast, and centriole.
- I will define and describe the primary organelles of eukaryotic cells.
- I will articulate the differences between plant and animal cells.
4. Warm-Up
- Define organelle.
- Identify two differences between the ER and the Golgi apparatus.
- Which organelle is responsible for breaking down dying organelles and food particles within cells?
5. Review : Come up with a school-related analogy for the different parts of the cell
- Nucleus - Central Office
- Nucleolus -Guidance Office
- Cytoplasm - ?
- Cell membrane - ?
- Ribosome - ?
- Endoplasmic Reticulum - ?
- Golgi apparatus - ?
- Mitochondria - ?
- Lysosomes - ?
6. Plant Cells vs. Animal Cells 7. Vacuoles(what they both have)
- Definition :
- fluid-filled sac
- Small in animal cells
- Large in plant cells
- Function :
- Used to store materials needed by the cell like water, food and enzymes
- Supports heavy structures like leaves and flowers in plants
8. Organelles found ONLY in Plants: Cell Walls Chloroplasts 9. Cell Wall
- Definition :
- A rigid layer that surrounds the cell membrane
- Function :
- To provide support and protection for the cell
- The cell walls of multiple cells can attach to one another to support the organism
- Cell walls are made of different materials depending on the organism
- *Note:Cell wallsare also foundin prokaryotic cells .
10. Cell wall 11. Chloroplasts
- Definition:
- Are organelles that have adouble membraneandstacks of disc-like shapes containing chlorophyll
- Function :
- Use energy from the sunlight to make food for the cell through the process of photosynthesis
- Chlorophyll gives plants their green color
- Like mitochondria because it provides energy
12. Chloroplast 13. PLANT CELL Cell wall Large vacuole Chloroplast 14. Organelle found ONLY in Animals: Centrioles 15. Centrioles
- Definition:
- Are barrel-shaped organelles composed mostly of microtubules
- Function :
- Organize and transfer chromosomes and other organelles during Meiosis and Mitosis
- Serve as the construction point for cellular microtubules
- *Note:Centriolesare also foundin some prokaryotic cells .
16. Centriole 17. Small vacuole Centriole 18. Wrap-Up
- Get in teams of two or three people.
- Take out a sheet of paper to write your answers.
- In the questions that follow, your team needs to Name that Organelle.
19. Question 1
- Im a real powerhouse
- Thats plain to see
- I break down food
- To release energy
- What am I? ______________________
20. Question 2
- Im strong and stiff
- Getting through me is tough
- Im found only in plants
- But I guess thats enough
- What am I? _____________________
21. Question 3
- Im the brain of the cell
- Or so they say
- I regulate cell activities
- From day to day
- What am I? ____________________
22. Question 4
- Found only in plant cells,
- Im green as can be
- I make food for the plant
- Using the suns energy
- What am I? ______________________
23. Question 5
- Im a series of tubes
- Found throughout the cell
- I transport proteins
- And other things as well
- What am I? ___________________
24. Question 6
- Im full of holes
- Flexible and thin
- I control what gets out
- And what comes in
- What am I? _________________
25. Question 7
- Proteins are made here
- Even though Im quite small
- You can find me in the cytoplasm
- Or attached to E.R.s wall
- What am I? ______________________
26. Question 8
- Ive been called a storage tank
- By those with little taste
- Im a sac filled with water
- Food, enzymes, or waste
- What am I? ______________________
27. Question 9
- Since I contain many enzymes,
- I can digest an injured cell;
- And can break down a large molecule
- Into a smaller one as well
- What am I? ______________________
