Vox Pop Style Interview: EXAMPLE 1

Interview 1

What features do you enjoy reading in magazines?

Articles about concerts that have been on, I also enjoy reading about the band members and what they are doing in their personal life

Is there anything else that you would like to see in a music magazine?

Probably things about film and photography because people buy music magazines for like variety on different subjects and things, but a lot of them are just based on music.

What attracts you to buy magazines or music magazines?

A lot of magazines give out free things which are always a good thing. Posters, or CD’s or calendars and things like that. Also depending on what bands are playing, or like on the cover.

Do you go to concerts or festivals?

I go to concerts and festivals.

How many times?

Probably like festivals once a year, like Leeds fest normally. And then I go to concerts like once every month or two.

Where do you buy your clothes from?

I get my clothes from Topman, burton, loads of places online.

Are there any brands you prefer?

Not really, I just go on what it looks like and comfort and things like that.

If you were given fifty pound to spend what would you buy?

Probably end up saving it or spending it on clothes or something like that.

What do you do on your weekends or free time?

I Just go out with friends, and recreational stuff.

Again celebrity gossip, I like to read about them and see pictures of them.

How often do you go to concerts or festivals?

I've never actually been to one, but that's not because I don't want to, I just don't have enough money. They're too expensive.

Photography Planning

ModelsFor my magazine front cover and double page spread I will use two girls and a boy as part of an indie band. I will also photograph other people to look like artists so the images can be used in my contents page.

CostumesMy indie band which will be on the front cover and in the double page spread will all wear vans. The male band member will wear a cream jumper, skinny jeans and vans.

PropsFor my front cover I may get one band member to hold a guitar to show that they are a live music band, however as after looking at other NME covers with bands on the front cover I have seen that they rarely use any props, instead the covers often show the band standing together.

LocationsFor my front cover I will shoot in the studio, and for the double page spread I will take photographs at various places to find a sofa that fits with the image. I will take photos at places like starbucks where there is a relaxed atmosphere which fits in with the indie image of the band. Ideally I would like to use an old brown leather sofa. For the other smaller photos which will be used in my contents page they will be taken in a variety of different places, some will be taken outside in an urban environment whereas others may be taken against a white wall if a studio is not available.

My front cover will feature all three band members stood together, with the male band member in the centre while each female band member will stand to either side of him. It will be a long shot so the audience can see what the band members are wearing as when I carried out my audience research they said they would like to see more fashion in a music magazine. I will shoot the cover in a studio, as this is a genre convention of most music magazines, I will take these photos portrait. Also on my front cover will be two or three smaller pictures of features which will be inside the magazine. This follows the style of NME the magazine I have roughly based my magazine on.

For the double page spread main image I will have the band members sat down all with their feet up towards the camera so we can see the soles of their vans. In the double page spread I will also feature a mini profile on each band member so there will be medium close up of each person. This means there will still be a clear shot of each band member even if the main image the band members faces are slightly out of focus due to the depth of field. I will shoot the cover in a studio, as this is a genre convention of most music magazines. The images I will take for the double page spread will be landscape as I want the image to take up more than one A4 side of the double page spread. The remaining space on the page will then be split into columns as this also follows genre conventions.

You may include images off google of props and

map screenshots for location scouting, be

creative!

Draft Pitch

I am creating a throwaway style magazine called soundwave, it will contain all the latest music news of new music and artists. Because my magazine is aimed at people who enjoy listening to indie music I decided to call the magazine soundwave, as this implies they are learning about new music from the magazine before anybody else as sound waves are what carry sound.

It will be published by Bauer Media and be fortnightly, so that all the information printed in the magazine is current, and will cost £1.80 per copy. This price reflects the target audience, as the magazine will be aimed at an audience aged between 15 and 25 who may not have a large disposable income available to them. I will feature articles about new music, up and coming artists as well as concert calendars/ gig guides, interviews and reviews.

As it is a throwaway magazine and aimed at a younger audience the language used will be informal and easy to relate to and understand. As it is published fortnightly and not an upper market magazine this should reflect I the number of pages published and therefore the magazine will contain around 82 pages. In these pages will contain a few double page spreads but as I am creating a throwaway style magazine many of the articles will be shorter therefore making them much more accessible.
