‘What is your age?’ The first question on my questionnaire was ‘What is your age?’. I asked this question so I knew who to aim the magazine at, and to work out an ideal target audience.

From the people I asked for my questionnaire, there was 3 people in the ‘20 to 24’ category, and the other 14 in the ‘15 to 19’ category.

This shows that I should primarily aim my magazine at people between 15 to 19, but whilst also keeping it appropriate for people up to the age of around 25.

‘Are you Male or Female?’ I asked this question to again help work out the target audience for my magazine. Out of the 17 people I asked, only 2 were female, and 15 were male.

‘How often do you buy music magazines?’

I asked this question to help me decide how often my magazine should be published, based on how often people actually read music magazines.

The most common response was ‘Never’, with over half of the people I asked responding with this. Once a year was the second most popular. However, both of these results are against what would be best for my own magazine, so I won’t let the results influence my decision about magazine length.

‘What do you consider to be a good length for a music

magazine?’

I asked this question to help decide a popular magazine length, so that I have an idea of what lengths would appeal most to my target audience.

The most popular lengths were ‘61-80’ and ‘81-100’ pages, which were selected by 5 people each, and ’41-60’, which was selected by 4 people.

From the results to this question, I can conclude that any length from 40 to 100 pages would be fairly popular, and I have decided that I will probably make my magazine roughly 80 pages in size.

‘What are your favourite genres of music?’

Again, I asked this question to help gain an idea of what is popular with my target audience. I asked about favourite genres of music so I knew what appeals to the target audience and what doesn’t.

The most popular option was ‘Indie’ music, with 13 people choosing this option, and ‘Rock’ music, with 11 people.

I also included an ‘Other’ option, which gave me the results ‘RnB’, ‘Post Rock’, ‘Ska’, ‘Reggae’, ‘Irish’, ‘Folk’, ‘Dance’ & ‘ShoeGaze’. However, they only had 1 vote each, so none of these were popular enough to influence the final results.

This shows that my magazine should focus on ‘Indie’ and ‘Rock’ music.

‘Do you currently read any other music magazines?’

I asked this question so I know which magazines my target audience are currently most familiar with, to give me an idea of what to try and emulate with my own magazine.

The most popular was NME, followed by Q and Kerrang. This has given me an idea of what my target readers currently associate with this genre of music magazine.

‘How much would you pay for a music magazine?’

I asked this question to know what my target audience consider to be an appropriate price for a magazine.

The most popular response was ‘£1 – £2.50’ with 50% of the people I asked choosing this option. Another 25% responded with ‘£2.50 - £4’.

From this question, I have reached the conclusion that my target audience would prefer a cheaper magazine of a price around £1-£2.50.

‘What colors do you associate with your favourite genre of

music?’

I asked this question to help create ideas for the colon scheme of my magazine, and to find out what colours stand out with my target audience.

The results of this question were the closest out of all my questions. The most popular responses were Black, White, Red, Green and Dark Blue.

Due to this survey, I now intend to use a colour scheme involving these colours in my magazine.

‘Who are your favourite bands or artists?’ ‘What words do you associate with your favourite genre of music?’

I asked this question to enable me to develop a better understanding of the tastes of my target audience. I received a variety of responses to this question, but the most popular responses were: Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club, Taylor Swift, Oasis and Slade.

This goes well with the question about the favourite genre of music, as they both help me to understand what the target audience wants to read about.

I asked this question to help me decide on some key words that would stand out to potential buyers of my magazine. Again, I received a variety of responses.

Some of the responses included: • Sound

• British

• Madchester

• Melodic

• Chill

• Experimental

• Brave

• Original

• Pyschedelic

• Guitars

• Mod

• Interesting

• Gritty

This has helped me develop an idea of good titles and headlines that will catch the readers eye.

Conclusion

From the results of my questionnaire, I have decided a few key points for my magazine.

Firstly, I have decided that my target audience is primarily Male fans of indie and rock music, between the ages of 15 and 19.

As well as this, I have concluded that an ideal length for my magazine would be between 61 and 100 pages, and an ideal price would be between £1 and £2.50.

The questionnaire has also helped me decide which colours would be best for the magazine, with Black, White, Red, Green and Dark Blue all seeming to be popular with the people who I asked to complete my survey.
