Audience Research In order to understand who watches horror films, I have decided to conduct audience research into my chosen genre; horror. I am planning to look, firstly, at the overall audience attendance for horror films, followed by breaking down the different audiences there are (ethnicity, socio- economic group, etc.) and look at how much viewing levels change. This Pie Chart shows all the viewing platforms available to an audience and the popularity of each platform by the audience. From this pie chart the information that I can gather is that online streaming is not one of the most popular viewing platforms for watching films.
2% of the audience watch films that stream online. Therefore I need to ensure to utilise the online platforms that are popular by the audience in general and target my audience through known online sites such as ‘Youtube’.
After looking at the whole audience percentage into online streaming for films, I researched into more diverse audiences and whether this affects the popularity of online streaming. Film audiences are broken down into diverse groups such as; Asians, working class, Eastern European and LGB (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual). Each bar chart breaks down the percentage of people who use each platform. Looking specifically at online streaming, I have found that Eastern Europeans make up most of the 2% that watch films online. This, along with choosing popular online channels to stream my short film on, are factors that will improve the success of my short film.

As my chosen film genre is horror, I looked into the success of horror and horror sub-genre’s with the audience. This bar chart to the left shows the percentage of an audience that enjoy watching a film genre. From this bar chart, thriller/ suspense films are more popular by the audience (53% enjoy watching films of this genre) than general horror films (32% enjoy watching films of this genre).
