Challenges

12” x 12” Mid-year Challenge “CARNIVAL”

Hi Everyone

Remember, if you want to still be a part of our challenge, (and at this late stage, a challenge it definitely is) you can hand your Carnival quilts to me at the OCTOBER Hand-in Day meeting – we will still take them because we want to make a BIG impact at Festival of Quilts.

i will be in the back room typing for the Festival of Quilts database but, if you hand them to any of our Committee people they will then hand them to me. I’ll also come out to the front now and then to see if there are any for me.

There is no entry form for this mid-year challenge, you just need to put your quilt title, your name and your membership number on the back (and the HOOK Velcro) so that we can ensure it is returned to you.

2017 DOROTHY COLLARD CHALLENGE

“IF I ONLY HAD TIME”

I always like to try and find a different way of looking at the theme title. Perhaps use the words in a differ-ent way. Look up a word in a Dictionary or Thesaurus to find different meanings. Time is something I’m always short of and I’m sure there are others out there who have wish lists, bucket lists, etc.

One of my secret wishes is to go on a quilting cruise. I’ve always thought it would be a great holiday, with no time to get bored. I can’t see it happening for a few years yet but it’s good to keep in mind.

Keep thinking of ideas – something will come to you and you will find yourself finding time to get it done, after all.

Photos show progress being made on

the striped pieced community quilts.

We have had our beginners quilting class taught by Chris Behersing and ‘quilt as you go’ workshop as I write my article for October Newsletter. We had fourteen people for the quilting class and ten for the ‘quilt as you go’ class including three of our Community Quilts ladies. I have attached some photos from both classes. I would like to thank you all for those people who made Community Quilts that we presented to Kids First last month. We had 30 quilts in our stock and 23 quilts came in on the day. So we presented 53 quilts to David Kemeys who is in charge of the Middlemore Foundation. We thank you all for your time, effort and generosity of our members. You are such kind and wonderful people. “Thank you so much!”

With all our best wishes from

Community Quilts

Well done to all you ladies who have already sold some raffle tickets. So

far we have raised $300 towards this year’s good cause – a good start

all be it a modest one. I was a little disappointed though that only a

further 16 books were sold or taken for pre-sale at the last meeting. I

know we can do better than that. Pre-selling is very important as it’s a

chance to get non-quilting friends, family and work colleagues, people

who would not come to our show, involved in our fund raising efforts.

Some of you may have seen the article that appeared in the New

Zealand Herald on 8 September following the release of a survey by the

Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust. The report highlights the

tragic circumstances which so often lead to a child or children going into

the care of their grandparents.

“The grandparents often face ongoing sacrifices to deal with the health and education of the children, all

the time their own health may be getting worse, their retirement savings disappear and they have to give

up work, change jobs or reduce hours to meet the needs of the children” Liz Gordon, Researcher

I will have copies of this article at the next meeting if you want to look at it.

So although its hand-in day I hope that lots and lots of you will come and get some books of tickets to pre-

sell. I am counting on you ALL to really get behind this year’s cause!

Thank you, Pauline

Auckland Festival of Quilts 2016

Welcome to the October update.

By the time you receive your newsletter, there’ll be around 1 week till Hand in Day on 1st October 2016!! Last minute rushes, binding and attaching labels and fluffy side of Velcro to quilts will be everyone’s focus – can’t wait to see all the gorgeous Quilts, challenges, Mixed Media etc This is the highlight of our quilting year! Phew everyone!!, what an effort you’ve all put in!!

Our annual show is what sustains the guild, keeps our annual subs at a very low cost, library and fabulous subsidised classes and more. So please, help out both on Hand in Day and at the Show.

For our new members (and those not so new) it is a great way to meet other members and see just what goes on behind the scenes.

Thank you to those who have volunteered to help on Hand in Day, without your help there would be long queues waiting!!

Rosters

All rosters, for Set up Day Wednesday 2nd November, the Show itself: Friday 4th November, Saturday 5th November and Sunday 6th November, will be at the October meeting on the Education table at the back of the hall. We’d love to have you help, so please volunteer to do at least one duty period. This is your show and we need your support to make it successful! Remember, on the day you volunteer, your entry is complimentary as a thank you for volunteering your time.

Everyone is very welcome to attend the Awards event on Saturday 5th November, complimentary drink & nibbles from 4.15pm, then the awards around 4.45pm so thanks for supporting the very deserving prize winners of your Guild and our wonderful sponsors.

The Show closes at 4pm on the Sunday. Volunteers for pack down of the show and members who arrive to collect their quilts, please note: Entry is free after 3.30pm

Entry to Show $12.00 per day

To try to resolve a hiccup from 2015, this year at the ticket booth you will be given a wristband to wear. Just put it around your wrist, ask for help if needed. This will avoid congestion at the entry door, no stamping of the hand, and makes it more convenient to leave the show floor then return.

Drop off points – We have 5 drop off points this year, please phone to make a convenient time to drop off your quilt/s and make sure all your quilts are ready for display. If you need your quilts posted back to you after the show (only for out of town people) please ensure your return packaging is big enough and that you have the right postage prepaid. We do not encourage this but will do it in special circumstances. These drop points are only if you can’t make it to hand in day. Remember, it is a huge responsibility these volunteers take on, to look after your quilts. If you send your quilt to a drop off point, you will need to make contact with that person prior to collecting your quilt at the end of the show, to get the official receipt voucher, this avoids a lot of confusion at the quilt collection point and avoids having to send you to the back of the queue for collection. It is a responsibility, not a right!

Please take posters and place them in libraries, shops, community centres, display boards in malls, your office or car, where ever it is appropriate. The flyers can be placed in letter boxes, shop counters, at the library. We need as wide a coverage as possible.

If you receive the newsletter via email you will have the Festival of Quilts poster as a separate attache-ment as a .pdf file. You can simply forward this to your friends/family/workers to advertise the show. If you receive a printed copy there is the attached flier for the show. We would like you to on send it to as many of your friends who are not Guild members, we are keen to attract as many people to come to the show and enjoy all the beautiful quilts and our Merchant Stands and the wonderful exhibitions on display. If you are on Facebook, please go to the Auckland Guild page and “share” the flier. This will reach a whole heap of people!! Tell your friends as well!!

We are also advertising on the radio this year – listen out for the advert

Don’t forget to also collect raffle tickets to sell to friends, work colleagues etc. This years proceeds from the raffle quilt are going to the “Grandparents Raising Grandchildren” A lot of us are Grandparents, and some know the demands more than others, that circumstances can be very stressful and distressing, so a wonderful cause to support as they do not get any government funding, for their wonderful work.

Note:

Please don’t forget: on the label which you attach to the back lower left hand side of your quilt, and also on the entry form, to please also add :

Design Source: and who/what was your source

Thanks for that.

Happy Stitching everyone (and finishing like me!!) Look forward to seeing you on Hand in Day!!

EDUCATION

The Gifting Basket

The committee have been looking at ways of embracing our charitable status and as a charitable trust we need to demonstrate this. Being Patchworkers, Quilters and Textile Artist, we have, at times, surplus or unwanted lengths of fabric. We are going to instigate our Gifting Basket. A basket will be available at each Guild Meeting for you to donate your unwanted or surplus fabrics and notions. Because it is a ‘gift’ there will be certain requirements i.e. the minimum size = a fat 1/8th in size. Please take the time to square it up. Fold it and make it look inviting. When there are enough pieces, we will sort for suitability and donate to groups who will benefit. Please feel free to let us know of a group you feel would like to be the recipient. You can find the basket by the membership area at Guild meetings.
