We’ve had a spectacularly successful year marking the first half of our centennial celebrations. Together, we salute 100 years of AUC’s enduring legacy and look forward to the promise of our second century. We launched a full year of celebrations where AUC first began in 1919 on our iconic Tahrir Square campus. Our program of events will culminate with a full week of festivities on the New Cairo campus in February 2020.
Our centennial programs are accelerating this University’s trajectory into our second century. We inaugurated AUC’s Tahrir Cultural Center, which is already enriching cultural life downtown as we aim to catalyze an Egyptian renaissance in the arts, thanks to a generous donation by prominent businessman Naguib Sawiris. Its first historic cultural exhibition revived for today’s rising generation the legacy of the pioneering feminist Doria Shafik, who led from AUC’s Ewart Memorial Hall the 1951 women’s march on Parliament for the rights to vote and hold public office. The Egyptian government minted our centennial coin both in silver and gold. We brought prominent speakers to major cities around the world: our own Dame Minouche Shafik, director of the London School of Economics and Political Science who studied at AUC from 1979 to 1980, delivered the Nadia Younes Memorial Lecture. Our $100 million Centennial Campaign has now reached 86% of its goal. Within this campaign, AUC’s Centennial Benefit Dinner held in New York at The Metropolitan Museum of Art showcased the glories of Egypt and of AUC, and raised more than $1 million in fresh scholarships.
Such positive momentum affords no rest; however, in the pursuit of our ambitions for our second century, I thank our trustees and other donors, alumni and friends listed in this report for your sustained generosity and belief in AUC’s mission. Your commitment and support enable us to advance in our daily quest to go from good to great among world universities. This past year of extraordinary accomplishments has sustained my confidences in our fine institution and has well set the stage for a new century of even greater accomplishments ahead.
FRANCIS J. RICCIARDONEPRESIDENT

This is a special time for all of us at AUC as we commemorate our 100-year legacy and usher in a new century of service to Egypt. The Board of Trustees was delighted to join the campus as well as alumni and friends around the world to celebrate AUC’s centennial, both on campus and internationally in New York and London. The energy that brought these events to fruition reflected the dedication to AUC shared by so many. Our faculty remains the core of the University, our students bring it energy and curiosity, our alumni display its impact, and our friends demonstrate its appeal. The celebrations exemplified AUC’s commitment to continuous revitalization. As part of the centennial, we inaugurated the Tahrir Cultural Center at our historic downtown campus and initiated a series of projects to reinforce the vibrancy of the New Cairo campus, which celebrated its 10th anniversary as AUC’s home.
AUC’s impact on Egypt and around the world is a defining characteristic of its history and its continuing mission. This year, AUC was selected, along with Cornell and MIT, to collaborate with public universities and launch three USAID-funded Centers of Excellence in Egypt — a $90 million investment — in collaboration with Egypt’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. AUC hosted the Chinese-African Higher Education Forum, with leaders of more than 20 Chinese, African and Egyptian universities. Our students won first place in a global robot design competition, and our Cairo International Model United Nations delegation received an Outstanding Delegation Award for the 10th consecutive year at the National Model United Nations conference in New York. AUC also introduced a data science major, the first-of-its-kind in Egypt and the Arab world, and launched our new Summer@AUC program for high school students and learners of all ages.
The board also welcomed two new members: Thomas W. Lentz, a specialist in Persian painting who previously served as director of the Harvard Art Museums, and Jonathan L. Wolf, founder and president of Wendover Housing Partners. The board will benefit greatly from their expertise and wisdom, and it is a delight to have them as colleagues. Sadly, we also lost one of our dedicated former trustees, Paul Corddry, who played a tremendously consequential role in building AUC’s new campus. The University benefited greatly from the energy, enthusiasm and optimism of his service, and he made the rest of ours wonderfully more gratifying. As we reflect on our past, we must focus on what has allowed AUC not only to persevere, but also to flourish. AUC thrives because its central mission — a private, not-for-profit liberal arts University dedicated to education in Egypt — responds so fundamentally to society’s needs. Let us remain energetically true to this mission, and the success of our next century will take care of itself.
RICHARD A. BARTLETTCHAIRMAN

AUC’s story is truly woven into the fabric of
Egypt’s own development over this past century into a
leading, influential power among the community of nations.
As Egypt’s story continues to unfold —powered by the
vision, creativity and dynamism of its people —so does the story
of AUC’s mission of service to our host nation and the world as
Egypt’s global University.

FINANCIALS
Total operating revenue for fiscal year 2019, which covered the period from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019, was $185 million, including foreign exchange gains of $3.1 million. Total expenses were $180.7 million, resulting in a surplus of $4.3 million.
The largest source of revenue was gross tuition and fees, which generated $111.3 million. Endowment support and interest income totaled $27.2 million. Gifts and sponsored research income generated $21.8 million. Revenue from education extension services realized $10 million.
The largest operating cost, $75.8 million, was spent on faculty and staff salaries and benefits. Supplies and services costs were $27.6 million, financial assistance costs were $27.8* million, and depreciation expenses were almost $17.2 million.
These expenses are also categorized according to function as follows: academic and academic support represented about 41.3 percent of all expenses, or $74.6 million; administrative and general expenses followed at 23 percent, or $41.6 million; financial aid and scholarship costs were about 13.5 percent of all expenses, or $24.4 million; auxiliary enterprises were 8.1 percent of all expenses, or $14.7 million; education extension services costs were about 7.6 percent of all expenses, or $13.7 million; student services costs were about 4.1 percent of all expenses, or $7.4 million; and research expenses were 2.4 percent of all expenses, or $4.3 million. Depreciation expenses and operation and maintenance expenses are allocated to the respective functional categories.
As a not-for-profit institution, AUC budgets rigorously to match anticipated revenues, including gifts and endowment income, to anticipated expenses. Due to the unpredictability of key economic factors, such as foreign exchange, fluctuations and inflation, AUC’s actual budgets from year to year may result in modest deficits or surpluses versus projected revenues and expenses. Occasional surpluses help offset occasional deficits and, over time, always result in sustaining prudent and sustainable fiscal health for the benefit of our students. Members of AUC’s Board of Trustees serve without compensation beyond the satisfaction of contributing their own time, talent and treasure to AUC.

1919 SOCIETYConsistent giving is the cornerstone of the AUC Fund’s success. To honor the many devoted donors who support the AUC Fund year in and year out, AUC created the 1919 Society, named in honor of the founding of the University. The 1919 Society recognizes consecutive giving in increments of five, 10, 15 and 20 years.
