What audiences are saying about INTERSECTIONS

“ INTERSECTIONS, the gathering-spot of artists in DC.”--Festival Artist

“Jazz singer, Akua Allrich, gave a phenomenal performance. After she performed her original piece, I had to buy one of her CDs just so I could hear the song again.”

“I love the energy--the festival supports local artists, the ticket prices are affordable, and the venue is beautiful!”

Imagination Stage Inside Out April 9-14 Things can get a little crazy when kids start to turn things inside out. Imagi-nations go wild in a game of dress-up. Scarves become birds. T-shirts become monsters. A sock dance rocks the closet! For children ages 1-5.

Sō Percussion Where (we) Live April 26 Known for music that explores the ex-tremes of emotion and musical possibility, Where (we) Live questions the group’s personal and artistic homes by inviting in the unknown. Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society May 10 Grammy–nominated Argue and his 18-piece big band, Secret Society, evoke the Swing Era. Adopting a steampunk-in-spired attitude towards the traditional big band, Argue refashions this well-worn instrumentation into a cutting-edge en-semble.

Kyle Abraham Live! The Realest MC May 17-18 Kyle Abraham’s ensemble dance work investigates gender roles in the black community and the quest for acceptance in the world of hip-hop celebrity. Live! The Realest MC, references humanity in the digital age, creating an abstracted and humorously dark narrative that places the iconic childhood character, Pinocchio, in an industrial dystopia.

Great Noise Ensemble May 23 Formed when composer and conductor Armando Bayolo placed an ad on Craigslist.org seeking like-minded musicians passionate about contemporary music, now one of the most important and adventurous ensembles in DC’s new music scene.

SOLE Defined May 30-31 Creators Ryan K. Johnson (from Broad-way’s STOMP) and Quynn Johnson (dancer, choreographer) fuse percussive dance forms (tap, West African, body percussion, and hip hop) and theatre in a powerful new production that explores self-acceptance, inner strength, and the death of “No."

For tickets to these and other performances visit atlasarts.org or call the box office at (202) 399-7993 x2.

Andriessen 75April 6-11 The Atlas joins with Great Noise Ensemble, National Gallery of Art, Strathmore, and Shenandoah Con-servatory to present Andriessen 75, a festival celebrating the music of the beloved Dutch composer Louis Andriessen and his 75th birthday. Developed by Armando Bayolo, the Great Noise Ensemble founder and New Music curator at the Atlas, the Festival features premieres and defin-ing works by the honored composer alongside pieces and performances by his collaborators, students, and friends. This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Washington, DC and Consulate General of the Netherlands in New York.

Save the date! Annual Gala, Atlas Underground, will be Friday, October 17, 2014. To sponsor this incredible event contact [email protected].

MAY 2014I Draw Slow May 3 Dublin band I Draw Slow has been setting records in their native Ireland. The five-piece band has been compared to Alison Krauss with a sound rooted in the old style of the Appalachian Mountains, draw-ing on Irish traditional music and modern Americana.

Nnenna Freelon May 8 Six-time Grammy Award nominee Freelon has worked with The Roots, Take 6, Sir Elton John, Andrea Bocelli, and more. Freelon is known for her ability to inter-pret songs in their truest form.

B-FLY ENTERTAINMENT Liner Notes May 9-10 Remember the booklet that came with your vinyl, cassette, or CD? Where you could discover influential genres and per-sonal statements of artistic expression? Join a live musical journey through hip hop’s many intersections.

INTERSECTIONS donors Bruce Chartier and Stegar Thompson were among the first Fans of INTERSECTIONS. Fans donate to support the festival and receive special INTERSECTIONS benefits. To become a Fan of INTERSEC-TIONS, visit atlasarts.org.

We asked Stegar, pictured (right) with Artistic Director Mary Hall Surface and Bruce, for his thoughts on the Atlas.

How did you discover the Atlas?About 25 years ago I lived nearby. I love seeing all the new excitement in the neighborhood—with the Atlas leading the way. Why did you pick the Atlas' INTERSEC-TIONS Festival?I’ve known Mary Hall practically since birth, we grew up together in Kentucky. I’ve always followed her work. Bruce and I now live in California, but from the start we thought the INTERSECTIONS multi-dis-ciplinary concept of connecting through the arts was fascinating. Both Bruce and I have spent our careers in the theatre—acting, directing, costume design—you name it, we’ve done it. INTERSECTIONS is the right fit for our giving. What are you looking forward to at the Atlas? We visit DC about once a year to see friends and family. We try to plan that trip around INTERSECTIONS, of course!
