A STRIKING TECHNICAL IMPROVEMENT

Save for the obvious item of increased transmitter power, most of the successive improvements in the technical department of broadcasting are likely to be taken pretty much for granted by the average listener.

But one recent improvement is so striking that it is already the subject of widespread and enthusiastic interest among listeners who ordinarily care nothing about technicalities.

We are referring to the new electro- dynamic microphone used to broadcast the first two concerts by the Philadelphia Symphony Orches- tra over the Columbia System and WKRC.

As might be gathered from its name, this new microphone (devel- oped by the Western Electric Laboratories) employs the same basic principle on wbich the familiar dynamic loudspeaker operates. But what it does, rather than how it does it, is causing the wave of enthusiastic interest.

For one thing, it makes possible a considerable improvement in tonal fidelity. That was evident to any listener with an ear for quality, who heard the Stokowski concerts. The reason is a virtually uniform response over the whole band of audible frequencies from 20 to 10,000 cycles.

However, a still more important improvement is the wide volume range the new microphone can handle. Any musically- minded listener who heard the two Philadelphia programs cannot have failed to note that, instantly and gratefully.

With the condenser type microphone, standard equipment for the past several years, the volume level in the studio must be held within rather narrow limits. Fortissimos have to be throttled down and pianissimos built up, until the heart is pretty much ironed out of the music, particularly if it is the better sort. But this deadly flatness is eliminated with the dynamic microphone.

It has the extraordinary volume range of 40 decibels; or, in non- technical language, a power variation of 1 to 10,000. Sforzandi can be played as scored. Pianissimos come through as they should, and fortissimos have to be shaded only a trifle.

In short, this new dynamic microphone sounds like the nearest approach to hearing a concert in person which broadcasting technique bas made thus far. It should be as much of a boon to harassed con- ductors as it is to the listeners who demand that certain something that makes programs live.

Probably it will be some little time before the new equipment comes into general use. But, judging by the first two trials, it cannot be too soon. For example, we are impatient to hear a Sousa broadcast so han- dled. With the dynamic microphone the result should be more of the stuff that makes Sousa Sousa in person, but somehow has been conspic- uous for its absence via radio thus far.

Around the Dial By THE DIAL TWISTER

WCKY's new full -time schedule is improving the program service hereabouts. It gives you a wider local choice to find something on 1490 kilocycles any time in normal listening hours. And it's especially gratifying to have Covington car- rying some of the NBC Blue net- work features which WLW doesn't offer. Among the most welcome of these additions are Dr. Harry Em- erson Fosdick's National Vesper Service (Sunday at 4 p. in.), Har- bor Lights (Sunday at 10:15 p. m.), Clara, Lu and Em (Tuesday to Sat- urday inclusive, at 10:30 p. m.), Cuckoo (Saturday at 10 p. m.), the Rochester Civic Orchestra (Wed- nesday at 10 p. m.), and Paul Whiteman's Painters (Friday at 10 p. m.).

They say Columbia has put up the bars against astrologists, nu- merologists, mind -readers and for- tune- tellers of all kinds. But tbe ban doesn't seem to apply to pre- dictions of scores by football coaches and other sports crystal - gazers.

Then there's the unsolved mys- tery of Snoop And Peep (\VSAI, Wednesday at 8 p. no.). Will some- body please explain why one of the talent- hungry sponsors hasn't snapped up these guaranteed laugh- makers long ago?

Rumor has it tbat a half dozen more stations just over the line in Mexico are going to go on the air before long. If they cbisel in be- tween the American channels like XER is doing, tbat's going to make some pretty back -fence ^tatic. And the story is that American money is building them,

a That Xavier 20 Minutes of Good

Reading (WKRC, Sunday at 5:30 p m.) is something pleasantly dif- ferent Rev. Father P. J. Pernon botb reads well and chooses good

material. In addition he has capable musical support.

Vincent Lopez says he thinks the waltz is on its way back to popu- larity. Speed the day, say we.

Those programs by the National Oratorio Society (WSAI, Sunday at 10:1 p.m.) are worth a twist of anybody's dial. Reinald Werren- rath, who conducts them, says thc purpose is "to show that good mu- sic isn't a bore." He proves it. This season the Society is pre- senting shorter works.

And some people are blaming radio for the freakish fall weather we've been having. Poor old radio! Last year it was responsible for the drougrt, and before that too much rain. What's the next charge, your honor?

The Alias fi Doepke program WKRC (Sunday at 8:15 p. m.) pre- sents Dan Beddoe, with Howard Krell playing the Music Hall organ. It's almost superfluous to add that the result is something really fine.

Too bad that an operation bas taken H. V. Kaltenborn off tbe air temporarily. That breaks his string of 1583 broadcasts witbout no much as being tardy for one. There's something in the record class.

So Hortense Rose and George Hall, two- thirds of the Don -Hall- Rose Trio, have come bark to \VLW as The Happiness Kids. \Nell, it's no wonder they're get- ting lots of welcome -home mail.

They say Columbia limits broad- cast cussing to five naughty words per program: three d -mns and two h -lls, or vice versa. But noth- ing stronger. What's more, there! can't be four references to con- demnation and only one to the place said to be paved with good inten-

Hi there, Radio Dialers!

They had a pre micre of the cw opera called "Woz. zeck" at the New York Metropolitan Opera House last week. The entire music world is all agog it, though it sounds like th ername of a patent medicine.

I didn't go because opera gets in In) hair as a rule, but Mr. Willy Nllly, our operative in charge of opera, attended. It was written in 1921 by Alan Berg, who is no vela. Live of the Mrs. Berg who writes "The Rise of the Goldbergs."

Ten years ago is practically yes- terday when it comes to opera, on they just got round to producing it at the Met.

Mr. Nilly says that what "Won cck" lacks is a few good belly.

laughs. Don't raise your eyebrow, that's

an expression used in show bus!. ness and isn't considered vulgar.

Perfectly nice people say it. Mr. Nilly's idea is that if they

made the first act curtain stronger, put in some gags, a couple of good tap dancers here and there, a good theme song, and cut down a little on the murders it would make good popular entertainment.

It seems everybody gets mur- dered or commits suicide, just like in a Eugene O'Neill play.

Willy says you'd think it were put on by the Theatre Guild.

"Wozzeck" is pronounced "woz- zeek,' as in the sentence: Who wozzeck girl I seen you w:tb last night?

Dolores Gillen Dolores Gillen, one of radio's newer entertainers, is often heard

ae a dramatic artist from the Chicago NBC studios. Dolores is brown -eyed, has brown hair, and is a graduate of the University of Illinois.

think radio is partially responsible for this year's slump in gridiron attendance. As if anybody would rather hear a game broadcast than see it. Ray Perkins Has New Commercial Program on WLW

Ray Perkins, RADIO DIAL'S columnist, has a new program at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Satur- days on an NBC network in- cluding WJZ, WLW, WMAQ and WHAM and probably addi- tional stations. It is sponsored by the Andrew Jergen Company which has taken up its option on Perkins air time so that he can not continue on the Three Bak- ers program on Sunday nights. His Libby program on Thursday and Friday mornings at 10 o'clock will continue on WJZ, WCKY, and other NBC stations. The new program will give Per- kins fane a better chance than before to hear his subtle type of punful radio entertaining, his original songs and hie adroit contortions with his twin piano Clarence and Cuthbert.

We did a ravishing moon song the other night called "Pague Moon." By "we" I mean I and zoiy piano, the one named Cuthbert -a stallion he is, the pride of the NBC stables.

When television arrives we shall have tableaux to go with songs of this sort.

For "Pagan Moon," for example, we would bave a big orange moon rise just over Cuthbert's right shoulder, half way between the floor and the ceiling.

We would have a bugle call off stage (not off key, just off stage); and six little girls about 19 years old (19 years apiece, making 114 years altogether) would flutter down on wires (private wires, not party lines as these are nice girls), dressed as Pagan Moon goddesses -all good flutterers in yellow cheese cloth (the very hest Swiss Cheese, full of boles to facilitate fluttering).

For a wow finish to the tableau I would enter driving a chariot, in thc nimble seat of which would be the Goddess of Dawn, Aurora, which is up near Syracuse some- where.

Aurora and I would pose as liv- ing statuary like a Vision, symbolic of something or other, I dont know what, but the audience would know.

I figure' tell-a vision when they

audiences see one.

can

A tableau like that would ter - tainly be greeted with a roar of Borealis. The only question on our minds is whether the bugle should keep on blowing during the entire tableau.

Tableau or no tableau, that is the question.

Television is certainly going to open up a tremendous field. Whether it will stay open or not of

course remains to be seen.

Verna Is Red - Headed Blue

Singer on CBS

Red of hair and blue of voice, this decorative young woman is the latest find in the Columbia network's studios in Chicago. She's a contralto, responds to the name of Verna Burke and is beard from WBBM over the Co- lumbia network each Sunday at 6 p. m. during the Chicago Knights Program which WKRC sometimes broadcasts.

You Should Know- : Russ fi

Columbo

Russ Colombo started life as a violinist. Started it, literally; for the dark -haired lad was no more than a child when he first tucked a violin under his chin for a gruff Teutonic teacher back in the little town of Calistoga, California, where Russ' family moved following his birth in San Francisco in 1908. And neither his teacher, his father, his moth- er, or any of his eleven brothers and sisters foresaw the day when he would be capturing the hearts of National Broadcasting Com- pany audiences, not with a violin, but with his own inimitable soft - voiced baritone which has earned him the title of the "Valentino of Song."

By the time he was fourteen he was playing solos in the Im- serial Theatre in San Francisco. Iris father, who had been a musi- cian in his native Naples, was confident that his son was start- ed on a successful career as a violinist. But already Russ' mel- low baritone was beginning to attract attention.

Then came that great day when he was engaged for $75 a week to sing at the newly -open- ed Mayfair Hotel in Los An-

"Los Vaqueros de Ramona"

"Los Vaqueros de Ramona" is the official title of this picture, and although we're no great shakes at Spanish, we suspect that freely translated it means simply "Ramona and her Boy Friends." They appear at WLW at 5:15 p.m. on Monday and at 5:30 p. m. Wednesday. Ramona further demonstrates her versatility by singing some of her songs in Spanish, adding a linguistic ability to her talent for singing blues and playing the piano.

Ross MacLean Rose MacLean, young bari-

tone from Canada who achieved success on Broadway overnight by stepping into Everett Mar- shall's role in the "Scandals" when the star was ill, will be heard on the radio for the first time when he appears as guest artist with Nat BrusiloWs or- chestra on the Nestle Choco- lateers program Friday (De- cember 11) at 8:00 p. m. over a WJZ - NBC network and WCKY.

MacLean will sing three tunes from the "Scandals,' as his con- tribution to the program. They are "That's Why Darkies Are Born," "The Thrill Is Gone," and "You Didn't Know the Music and I Didn't Know the Words."

TOUGH "I don't like the person who plays

Clem in your 'Jimmy and Grandad' sketch. \Vlty don't you fire him and get somebody else ?" wrote a listener to Pat Barnes who broadcasts every noon on an NBC-WJZ network. Pat doesn't know what to do now. He takes all the parts in the sketch him- self.

HOKUM P. T. Barnum built a great show

on Hokum. The Hokum trio are following in

the footsteps of the Master Show- man in their acts which go on the air several times a week from WCKY. Plenty of noise, pep, mu- sic, and nonsense are included with a novelty in Will Cole's tap dan- eine, and mad singing and saxo- phone playing.

Rudy Vallee will soon be seen in films again? He is making a series of "shorts" with his orchestra, at the Paramount Astoria studios.

geles. Russ later sang and played in the Roosevelt Hotel and in the Cocoanut Grove at the Ambassador Hotel. Then he had a try at talking pictures, appearing with Betty Compson, Lupe Velez, and Gary Cooper. Finally he opened his own club, the Club Pyramid in Los An- geles.

When he came east he went on the air over an NBC network on September 5. The next day the fan mail began to pour in.

Columbo is tall, dark, hand- some--and unmarried. He is one of radio's best dressed men. His personal interest is in opera and he has a private collection of every operatic work ever re- corded. The old Teutonic violin master's teaching has left its mark.

He sings now late at night over the NBC -WJZ network. Some think he sounds "exactly" like Bing Crosby.

TOO FAST NBC is trying to work out a way

to put an announcer and portable radio transmitter on one of the bob sleds that will swish around the 25 turns of the glare -ice course in the 1932 Olympic Games at Lake Placid, N. Y. The sleds travel 65 or more miles.

DAN_DEDDOE

Dan Beddoe, celebrated Welsh oratorio tenor, is singing with the Music Hall organ in the Alms and Doepke program on WKRC at 8:15 Sunday night. Beddoe is one of the most fa- mous exponents of oratorio music and is a remarkable edi- tion to Cincinnati radio pro-1 grams.

With 12 pages or more as its established size from this issue on, Radio Dial is able to make the one improvement for which its readers bave asked: programs for each day complete on one page. We hope you like it.

Although Radio Dial is p rimarily a Cincinnati publication, it has won

no many friends outsde of Cincinnati area, that the network pro- grams have been elaborated to include outlets that can be heard by its readers away from the city.

To simplify the tuning of chain stations, the following log of net- work stations is given, with each chain headed by the New York station which broadcasts its programs: (Those marked take either NBC network.)

Kaltenborn's Friend Carries

On News Editing H. V. Kaltenborn's record of 1,583

broadcasts without missing an ap- pointment with the Columbia micro- phones, has been broken, but he didn't give up until he was ordered to the hospital for an operation. For two weeks he carried on from his bed in a hotel where a special microphone was installed for him. Robert E. Mae - Alarney, a friend of Kaltenborn, for- mer newspaper man, journalism pro- fessor and managing editor of the Lads' Home Journal, is pinch hitting for Kaltenhorn in his broadcasts through WKRC at 7:30 p. m. on Tuesday and Thursday. Although MacAlamey never had been on the air, in his first broadcast he spoke ex- temporaneously, perserving the spon- taneity of the "editing the news" periods in which Kalteuborn has al- ways spoken from a fete scribbled notes on a card index blank.

ARTISTIC TEMPERAMENT Even children have attacks of "ar-

tistic temperament" as Nila Mack, CBS director of children's programs, will testify. A fete days ago a young- ster appeared at Miss Mack's office, accompanied by her parents, and asked for an audition. The child's first re- quest was that her parents leave the room, because she found their pres- ence "dish -concerting." After a five - minute non -stop recitation, punctuated by exaggerated gestures, she suddenly caught sight of a glass bowl in which a solitary goldfish was swimming, at the moment, in the direction away front her.

"The fish isn't listening!" she ex- claimed, grabbing her hat and coat and leaving in a huff.

NEW TRIO The Rogers Musical Trio, harp,

violin and cello, is nosy on the NBC - WJZ network at 11:30 a. m. Mondays. It can be heard on WLW and KDKA, WENR, WGAR, WJR.

Frank Crumit of Blackstone Plan- tation broadcast fame says the most embarrassing moment of his life was when he discovered, after cursing his way through six holes of golf at the Audubon Club in New Orleans, that his partner, whose identity up to then had been unknown to him, was Bishop Thirkfield of the Louisiana Methodist Diocese.

The Landt Trio and White vocal- ists, who tell early morning risers how to get "On the 8:15" over an NBC -WJZ network, themselves "hit the deck" early. At 5:00 a. ne. their alarm clock sends thee.: leaping from the sheets. By 6:45 a. m. they are at the NBC New York studios re- hearsing. Promptly at 8:00 a. ne., 'On the 8:15" takes the air. Bob Burdette and Syd Ten Eyck, of \'LW, have been on an even worse schedule for a year or more.

Brad Browne, Radio "Nit- Wit,"

Joins Bakers

Bradford Br own e, banjo - strumming master of foolish- ness, succeeds Ray Perkins as master of ceremonies, or "Spare Baker," on the Fleischmann "Three Bakers" program Sun- day (December 6) at 7 30 p. m, on WLW and the WJZ -NBC network.

The change is being made be- cause the Jergen Company ex- ercised an option on Ray's ex- clusive services for their new program at 6:30 Tuesday and Saturday nights on WLW and the WJZ -NBC network.

In Brad Browne, the "Three Bakers" have one of radio's most versatile performers, k n ow n most widely as producer and leading genius of the "Nit - Wits," He's a song - writer, script- writer on humorous sub- jects, announcer, banjo -player and singer, on occasion, of funny songs. Quite a record for one whose early education at Georgetown University, was in the solemn ways of the law.

The skit for Sunday is titled "The Three Bakers With Co- lumbus," "1492 Complete With Tubes."

The Royal Northwest Dismounted Police

By SYDNEY TEN EYCK

Our story tonight deals with that famed, easy riding, hard eating bunch of Saturday night bathers known as the great Royal North- west Dismounted Police.

Their incomparable history runs back thousands of years to the days of the great Pharaohs of Egypt. They were organized by the Ar- canadian government for the pur- pose of aiding criminals to wrap themselves warmly with large iron bars as a means of preventing hali- tosis on Thursday evenings when all is well along the Moneen.

Their chief weapons are powder puffs, nail files and scented lace bordered hankies.

Let us pee- k into a typical bunk- house of the Great Royal North- western Dismounted Police. Ser- geant Cuthbert Monteith is engaged in packing his traveling bag pre- paratory to being sent upon a dark and dangerous mission. The back of his neck is quite dark but not dangerous. He has been ordered by the commander of the post to bring back my great grandfather, Tar- baby TenEyck, who had run amuck in the great northwest and is wanted by the Arcadian govern- ment for questioning in regard to the proper method of preserving baked watermelon rind.

Stuffing an extra dozen pairs of silk pajamas into his light brown goat skin suitcase he gargles a quart of carbonated whale oil, parts his hair neatly in five places and dashes forth in quest of his pris- oner. The uniforms of the great Northwestern Dismounted Police are beautiful things, and as he strolled languidly through the great Arctic wastes the pale pink stripes along his trousers glinted and flashed in the sun like searchlights in a fog.

Sergeant Cu- thbert Monteith was noted as one of the bravest men on the force. Several years ago he had had the temerity to talk back to his mother -in -law in no uncertain fashion, Although badly beaten and scarred for life be had won a moral victory over the old battle -axe and had been immediately promoted to the rank of sergeant. According to the reports of bravery filed at the main office, he will be promoted to the rank of lieutenant if he man- ages to sneak away from home three more nights. This will prob- ably take a long time, however, as he is still a bit dizzy in the region between his ears, resulting from the last unsuccessful attempt.

He walke- d 3000 miles the first reek and was beginning to get a

bit tired when word came to him by an Eskimo maiden riding a rein

EYCK

Working eediliously under cover, and hilariously fenoogel- ing, RADIO DIAL was able to induce Grandpappy Tarbaby Ten Eyck (otherwise known es Old Pop or Sydney) to hand over one of his famous "Royal North- west Dismounted Police" stories for the delectation of those of our readers who can't sit up late enough on Saturday nights to hear the Dopey Doodlesockers at 11:30 -end for those who don't get enough of Ten Eyck when they do sit up.

Being perfectly geloptiously generous (as Ten Eyek hee it) we include also the picture of El Ten Eyek.

deer with side saddle that the man for whom the was searching was in the next town and that assistance was badly needed. The great Tar- baby with his trusty six gun had already killed a dozen quarts and twice as many pints. Remember- ing the great motto of the dis- mounted police he surged forward with renewed vigor.

That motto, my friends, is that a Royal Northwestern Dismounted Policeman never gets his man. That's why Cuthbert was a Ser- geant. He'll be a General in later life because he couldn't even catch a cold wearing wet socks and sleep- ing in the gentle breeze of a Kansas tornado.

Two thousand miles later he ar- rived at his destination fresh as a last year's apple pie and strode boldly into town doing an admirable interpretation of an Ethiopian tap dance down the main street. Hear- ing a loud noise within the doors of the First Chance Saloon he smacked his lips three or four times, imitated the lonely call of a heart- broken land turtle, flung back the swinging doors and stood face to face with the man for whom he

Their answer is the suggestion that adhesive tape be applied over the nostrils end nose of the offender, or that liar. monicas be strapped over the mouth and nose of the sleeper to produce slumber music. Almost an equal turo. her of husbands wanted to know how to keep wives from snoring. (The Sisters can be heard at 10 a. m, Mon. day on \VEAF, WGY, \VTA \I, WWJ, \VSAI, and KYW; at 8 :15 p. m. Tuesday on \VJZ, KDKA, PILS, and at 8:15 p.m. Thursday and Fri- day, on those stations and \VLW.

There's an encore never heard by the radio audience to that signature jingle with which Billy Jones and Ernie liare conclude the Interwoven Program over an NBS network on Friday nights. It is sung by the members of the orchestra after the final chimes ring, and consists only of the line: "Sox, sox, doncha forgetia your soxaphone."

Professional Radio Daughter

Nan Dorland, formerly of the stage, is Dore Mae, daughter in the "Keeping up with Daughter" programs WSAI and other "red" stations of the NBC networks broadcast at II o'clock Wednes- day mornings. She played with robert Edeson and Elsie Fergu- son in Los Angeles and also was the ingenue of several stock companies on the West Coast.

was searching. There was a dead silence, punctured only by the in. cessant Hammering of a riveting machine across the street. Then things began to happen.

The great Tarbaby downed an. other quart of pickling brine, wiped his chin with a frozen moose hide, and salt and pepper shakers started smacking against the wall like a dozen machine guns at target prac- tice. When the smoke of battle had cleared away, Sergeant Cuthbert Monteith was draped across a bar- rel of smoked herring holding a lily in one hand and a bag of golf clubs in the other. Great Grandfather Tarbaby was on his way to the oil fields of eastern Africa and another Royal Northwestern Dismounted Policeman had lived up to the code of honor and had failed to get his man.

This, my friends, was the reason why the Doodlesocker programs are now broadcast by WLW at 11:30 Saturday nights instead of day after tomorrow.

Like Father Like Daughter

5

Like Father like Daughter is the rearranged axiom that pre. veils in the Horton family of WLW.

Although no one is willing to believe that Murray Horton is old enough to be the father of two almost -grown daughters. it really is true that two of the Horton Trio who sing with the Sunday afternoon Crosley Ramios programs are his daughters. At the left is Mary, at the right Harriet. Their trio -mate is Libby Beck who somehow was squeezed out of this family picture. Father Horton conducts the A. & P, orchestra at WLW morning and after- noon, and also directs several other programs. It was only natural that the two Horton girls should have begun to harmonize as soon as they learned that they could get farther by singing than by crying.
