CREATIVE PROCESS: AtlAntA MusicAl theAtre FestivAl Debuts with Developing tAlent AnD broADwAy DreAMsBy Holley Calmes

One year ago Benjamin Davis was preparing for his participation in the New York Musical Festival as Associate Producer for a work

titled “The Last Time We Were Here.” The concept of the New York festival, as he explains it, “Had my mind buzzing. I asked myself, ‘Why Doesn’t Atlanta Have Something Like This?’”

Thanks to Davis, Atlanta now has its own Musical The-atre Festival which will debut at the Actor’s Express on August 1st and 2nd. Audiences will experience 4 new full length musical theatre works and get an inside look at the difficult process of writing a new musical.

The young organization has a mission to “cultivate the next generation of theatre artists by mentoring talent, propelling new musicals forward, and celebrating the community in a supportive, nurturing, and creative environment.” The new festival kicks-off what Davis hopes will be a boon to both audiences and aspiring musical theatre artists.

“We received 20 submissions with a wide array of genres, from classical musical theatre to contemporary musical theatre, folk music to gospel music, and just about everything in between,” says Davis. “It was truly inspiring to see the community chomping at the bit to submit their work for consideration.”

Davis is excited about all four of the selected works, but two of them are particularly special.

“We have 2 shows that already have somewhat of a following behind them. But I think I am the most excited about the ones that have yet to be heard by the Atlanta community. The fact that our festival will be the very first time that someone hears this luscious music is a very exciting aspect of the AMTF.”

“I see limitless opportunities for growth,” Davis continues. “Atlanta is already a multi-cultural hub of art and activities. This festival has the potential to not only be a staple of the musical theatre community in Atlanta, but also in the Southeast, the US, and internationally. I hope for year-round programming culminating in our Festival where we will present world premieres in Atlanta.”

An interactive outer space adventure for astronauts 0–24 months old and their caregivers.

Dashboard, an experimental curato-rial agency, was commissioned by the Alliance to produce Babies in Space,

a new production geared toward the very young. Together, the companies produced an outer-space-themed environment that engages babies, ages 0 to 24 months old, and their caretakers. Babies in Space is an immersive environment open to the public for free daily (hours vary) with ticketed weekend perfor-mances. The visual component of Babies in Space consists of digital and sculptural works by artists Jane Cassidy and Kelly O’Brien,

and is touchable and toss-able for visitors. The performance element, created and performed by Atlanta’s Fly on a Wall dance

collective, responds to the visual work and is fully interactive to engage the young audience. Babies in Space runs through September 4 in the Joe Bankoff Gallery at the Woodruff Arts Center.

Pancakes, Pancakes! is an adaptation of Eric Carle’s beloved book of the same name, and explores the process of cooking — celebrat-

ing the joy in the labor and in the final feast. It is written by Alliance favorite Kenneth Lin (Warrior Class); directed by David de Vries (A Christmas Carol); and features original music by Phillip DePoy (Edward Foote). Part of the Family Series, it runs through July 10 on the Hertz Stage.

“Eric Carle’s ability to endow the simplest story with a profound sense of wonder makes his work perfect for theatrical adaptation, and Ken Lin has written a script that honors Carle’s artistic gifts.” says Chris Moses, the Dan Reardon Director of Education/Associate Artistic Director of the Alliance Theatre.

The 2016/17 Alliance Stage Series opens on August 18 with The Prom, a hilarious and timely new musical directed and choreo-graphed by Casey Nicholaw, who returns to the Alliance following the world premiere of Tuck Everlasting last season. Nicholaw and The Prom creators, Chad Beguelin (book and lyrics), Bob Martin (book), and Matthew Sklar (music) have sixteen Tony Award nominations among them for Broadway favorites including The Book of Mormon, The Wedding Singer, and Aladdin. The Prom is sure to be a smash hit!

This summer many local dancers are heading to the dance hubs of the

world for summer intensive training. Atlanta dancers will be seen in Boston, New York and Los Angeles amongst many other cities and countries.

These dancers have worked very hard and as such, have earned scholarships for their summer training. Having myself been in the dance industry for the last 36 years, I know many of the renowned dance instructors that will be teaching these Atlanta dancers. I am confident these dancers will return to Atlanta at the end of the summer with even more skill, technique and artistry to bring to Atlanta’s dance scene.

My company, Eurotard Dancewear, has been offering dance scholarships for many years to enhance students’ dance education. For movie fans, the 1990 film Ghost (starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Academy Award-winner Whoopi

Goldberg) is a cinematic icon. Its romance and excitement generated memorable moments like “the pottery scene” and quotable lines like “Ditto” and “Molly, you in danger, girl!” More than 20 years after the film’s success, the story of Sam, Molly, and Oda Mae comes to the stage as a modern musical. The script is written by Bruce Joel Rubin (Academy Award-winning screenwriter of Ghost). The music is by Dave Stewart (of The Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (writer on Michael Jackson’s Thriller) and features a blend of modern pop/rock, hip-hop, and Broadway influences — plus, of course, “Unchained Melody.”

Why turn this iconic film into a musical? The music explores new facets of storytell-ing that offer insight into why the characters

make the choices they do. While this closely follows the movie’s plot, bringing it to the stage makes the visual experience entirely new. Au-diences will relive the excitement of the film, and be able to introduce the story to a new generation. At its heart, Ghost is about connec-tion. Before his death, Sam has struggled to communicate his emotions with Molly; only the story’s journey can show him the impor-tance of “Three Little Words.” Oda Mae’s troubled life has led to her working as a fake psychic, but when Sam’s ghost proves to Oda Mae that she can have a real connection, she will learn to know her own value in the world. And after her loss, Molly will find that, with the help of women who support her, she can stand on her own and move forward. Contemporary music modernizes the story — highlighted by a beau-tiful all-acoustic orchestration, newly adapted from the version of the musical that played on Broadway (nominated for 3 Tony awards).

Following the recent introduction of At-lanta Ballet’s new artistic director Gen-nadi Nedvigin, the Company reveals an

exciting 2016-17 season featuring a mix of classic favorites and inventive new works.

One of the city’s most magical holiday traditions, Atlanta Ballet’s Nutcracker will kick off the 2016-17 season at The Fox Theatre in December. In February, Atlanta Ballet will bring David Bintley’s Carmina Burana to back to the stage, a bold production that the Company debuted to the U.S. in 2013.

In March, patrons are invited to become even more acquainted with Atlanta Ballet’s new artistic director by celebrating works of “Gennadi’s Choice.” The program will feature three works carefully curated by Gennadi, all which explore the evolution and transforma-tive nature of dance. Featuring selections from Paquita choreographed by Marius Petipa and staged by Gennadi himself, the Atlanta premiere of Vespertine, an abstract piece created by famed choreographer Liam Scarlett, and an enticing world premiere by Gemma Bond, longtime ballet supporters and newfound followers alike will witness entirely for the first time the unique artistry and intrinsic understanding of excellence

that Gennadi brings to the Company.The April program will continue to reflect

the range of illustrious choreographers and works that Gennadi has encountered over the course of his career as a student at the Bolshoi Ballet School and as a principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet. Featuring pieces from three of the most inventive choreographers of the 20th and 21st centuries, the April program titled “Firebird” will give Atlanta a special opportunity to appreciate the timeless beauty and power of ballet. A well-rounded and remarkable program, audiences will enjoy Yuri Possokhov’s sensational Firebird, the neoclassical splendor of George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, and the passion of Jiří Kylián’s Petite Mort.

The season will conclude in May with a ballet based on Camino Real by Tennessee Williams, with choreography from Helen Pickett and music and sound design by Peter Salam.

Atlanta native Cheryl Thomas didn’t need a Genie to make her Broadway dreams come true. She did it the old-

fashioned way — through talent, training and hard work. Today, the Avondale High School graduate is Hair and Make-up Supervisor for Broadway’s Tony Award-winning blockbuster, Aladdin at the New Amsterdam Theatre (www.aladdinthemusical.com). And while a magic carpet could have transported her from Atlanta to Times Square, Thomas is grateful for her own journey and the mentors who helped her along the way.

“As a stylist, I couldn’t have chosen a more exciting show to work on than Aladdin,” said Thomas. “How the characters look is as important as the music, choreography, costumes and sets. All of these elements combine to create the magic that thrills the audience every night.”

Thomas fell in love with the performing arts an early age. Encouraged by dance teacher Gary Harrison to pursue her passions, she performed for four years with his popular Atlanta dance company. She was awarded

a vocal scholarship to college, majoring in theater. Thomas also earned her aesthetician’s license and studied under celebrity make-up artist Gwynnis Mosby. She found local success doing hair and make-up for album covers, music videos and Atlanta theater companies and, eventually, for the Broadway touring companies performing at the Fox Theatre.

With her performance background and styling expertise, Thomas soon took her talents on the road with several Broadway touring productions, including Big River, The Lion King and Mary Poppins. Then, in 2012, Thomas made the leap to New York.

“I had always dreamed of living in New York,” said Thomas. “When I landed my first Broadway show, A Leap of Faith, I took it as a sign that I was where I was supposed to be. I feel that way now with Aladdin. I love helping the actors transform into their characters. I’m no genie, but working on Broadway still feels magical to me.”

Milestones are welcomed anniversaries for arts organizations. They indicate stability and longevity, so it is with

For the past several years this production, accompanied by a 35 piece professional orchestra under the baton of Predrag Gosta, has attracted 12,000 plus at-tendees for its 16 shows. It is one of the largest “Nuts” in the Southeast.

“For many ‘The Nutcracker’ is a focal point for the Holiday Season,” says GBT Artistic Direc-tor Wade Walthall. “It is an American tradi-tion for friends and families, but we also reach beyond the usual audiences to benefit special groups of individuals.”

GBT’s non-profit school is a training ground for serious dance students, and the ballet becomes a unique opportunity for this special group of aspiring young artists. As these youths develop their skills, they proceed from role to role, year by year. But with 16

performances, they also have more chances to perform.

Other groups that benefit from GBT’s Nutcracker are those who rarely have opportunities to experience a live performance. “We are also motivated to offer this ballet to special groups of children and adults,” Walthall says. “GBT began dedicating special shows to those with autism and other sensory issues and brain injuries two years ago, and the program has expanded ever since. This year will be no exception, with ‘special performances’ for these ‘special audiences.’”

GBT’s 35th Anniversary Nutcracker is under development in the heat of summer, looking to create the shiniest, most exciting Nutcracker ever. But it is for the ballet’s basics that ticket purchasers seem to yearn.

“The music of this ballet never ceases to inspire audiences,” Walthall states. “Thousands of people come from all over to experience this warm and magical version of ‘The Nutcracker,’ made exceptional by its visual spectacle, personal authenticity, and magnificent live music.”

Dance Theatre of Harlem is returning to Atlanta after a decade hiatus on October 21 at 11:00 a.m. to kick off the 2016-2017 ArtsBridge Field Trip Season! On November 15 at 10:15 a.m. and Noon, Artrageous hits the Cobb Energy Centre stage with visual artists painting live accompanied by vocals, choreography and music! Returning this year is Rhythmic Circus with their new tap-dancing, beat-boxing, big band holiday production, Red & Green, on December 1 at 11:00 a.m. On January 26, ArtsBridge is exploring the world of science with Doktor Kaboom’s “Live Wire! The Electricity Tour” at 10:15 a.m. and Noon. The Atlanta Ballet Fellowship Ensemble will present a one-hour classic ballet on February 9 at 11:00 a.m. Just in time for election year and President’s Day, we are celebrating our

nation’s history with Rock the Presidents on February 14 at 10:15 a.m. and Noon. Students will explore the world of dinosaurs through life-like puppets on March 1 at 10:15 a.m. & Noon with Dinosaur Zoo. Kennesaw State University’s College of the Arts returns this year with their free production of Synergy on March 8 at 11:00 a.m. And closing out our Season on March 30 at 11:00 a.m. is The Atlanta Opera’s Don Pasquale.

In April, ArtsBridge produces the Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards — The Shuler Hensley Awards, named after Tony Award winner, Shuler Hensley. Patterned after Broadway’s Tony Awards, the adjudicated event celebrates excellence in high school musical theatre. This year, the program is accepting 65 schools from the state to participate. The ninth annual Shuler Awards will take place on April 20, 2017.
