I t took an Atlanta project called the Dance Truck to revitalize my passion for photography … and to reawaken my heart.I had fallen in love with photography in college after encountering my roommate’s Nikon SLR

camera. Looking through that lens, I felt like I was home. It’s magic to capture someone’s personality in a photo, and there are so many moments—like weddings, children’s birthdays, or the first perfect smile—that beg to be kept forever. As a wedding and portrait photographer for the past ten years I’ve been privileged to capture thousands of just such moments.

But recently I had an experience that inspired me toward a new level of artistry with my photography. I had been intrigued by a local organization called Dance Truck and agreed to photograph a performance. (Dance Truck is a mobile performance venue presenting Atlanta’s artists.)

The night of the photo shoot, I was bone-tired from travel and busyness, coming off a long season of burnout. It was freezing cold outside, but as soon as the first dancer swayed I felt my heart begin to warm me from the inside out.

This is what I’ve learned: live dance captivates me. It’s pure artistic expression, full of power and beauty, capable of telling complex stories without a need for words.

I went into that night anticipating the technical challenges of shooting dancers in low light: adjusting the shutter speed to slow down motion, capturing pockets of light bouncing around in the trailer, reacting to the movement of light against dark.

What I didn’t anticipate was how this project would transform my outlook. I’ve moved from thinking of myself purely as a photographer to now thinking of myself as an artist. Simply put, I’ve learned how to feel and see again, personally and professionally.

I still delight in capturing milestone moments in weddings and portrait photography. But my growing passion is capturing the unvarnished artistic expression found in the performing arts, especially dance. Come join me in the journey. Contact me at www.bobbijobrooks.com.

CREATIVE PROCESS: GINA HYATT-MAZON

STRENGTHENS GEORGIA BALLET THROUGH EMPHASIS ON EDUCATION

6

hen Gina Hyatt-Mazon accepted the Artistic Directorship of The Georgia Ballet in August of 2003, she stepped into a role previously occupied by an Atlanta dance legend. Founding Director Hensley had created a company and school run with passion, generosity and kindness, and Hyatt-Mazon was determined to emulate her predecessor. In doing so, she has strengthened Georgia Ballet and expanded the infl uence of the company beyond its Marietta roots.

Hyatt-Mazon arrived in Atlanta with an illustrious dance career behind her. She was the recipient of the Gold Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Jackson, Mississippi, and performed with the Hamburg Ballet as Principal Dancer from 1986 to 1997. She came to the Georgia Ballet in 1997 and joined the staff, under Iris Hensley’s artistic directorship, as Ballet Mistress.

Georgia Ballet has gained strength in all facets of the organization under Hyatt-Mazon’s watchful, and enthusiastic, eye, particularly in the school. “My goals for Georgia Ballet continue to remain the same as when I started as Artistic Director in 2003,” she states. “I embrace achieving my goals by continuing to strengthen our school, as I believe it needs to be the internal and primary structure of our company.”

The performing company and its repertoire is another primary focus. “I continue to strive to present a varied, challenging and exciting repertoire for our beautiful dancers as well as for our audiences. We accomplish this by setting known, full-length classical ballets, newly created works by our resident choreographer Janusz Mazon, as well as a number of Balanchine works.”

Outreach in a four-part program is another impressive element of the company. Field trips, in-school lectures and demonstrations, residency programs and scholarships are offered to area children, fi lling a void left by underfunding of the arts in classrooms across the state.

“Dance specifi cally teaches cooperation, self-control, and the importance of practice and regular attendance,” Hyatt-Mazon explains. “With these outreach programs, we are able to impact the lives of our audience, our students, and our community at large. Dance is a universal language that transcends barriers and changes lives.”

The effect of cooperation, self-control, practice and regular attendance is felt by more than the recipients of outreach. “Our sixty Upper School students maintain a grade point average of 3.9,” she says. “They are exceedingly fi t and healthy in body and mind. They strive for excellence in all areas of their lives. It is important to us that we are developing, training and nurturing the whole person, not solely the dancer.”

Iris Hensley would be proud. “I feel we grow stronger with every passing season,” Hyatt-Mazon says. “I am certain that Iris would be pleased with the technical and artistic development of our company and school.”

And although Hyatt-Mazon has exciting plans for Georgia Ballet’s future, her personal happiness seems to come through living in the present.

“The small, but most signifi cant, successes are those that happen while putting one (pointed!) foot in front of the other. The present brings such joy!”

In 2009, lighting designer and production maven Malina Rodriguez arrived in Atlanta, seeking a vehicle through which to curate performance and introduce new audiences to contemporary dance. At the time, dance artists faced a lack of accessible venues, limited performance opportunities, and fragmented support from presenters. Seeing this need as a chance to make an impact, Rodriguez founded Dance Truck, the mobile movement project

dedicated to bringing dance to the people. The company’s utilitarian approach—pull up a truck and dance in it—is evocative, egalitarian, and wildly successful. The young company has presented more than 60 choreographers, including a dozen national and international artists, at a variety of cultural hotspots including the Le Flash Festival, Eyedrum Art & Music Gallery, Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Museum of Design Atlanta, The High Museum, Mint Gallery, The Goat Farm Arts Center, The Atlanta Beltline, and the prestigious Time-Based Art Festival presented by the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art. They’ve staged dance in box trucks, pickups, moving vans, food trucks and shipping containers, winning over audiences while cultivating new synergy around Atlanta’s cultural community. Dance Truck earned critical acclaim for their fi rst evening-length production, PLOT, created with choreographer Blake Beckham and voted Best Dance Performance of 2011 by Creative Loafi ng readers. The publication declared Dance Truck “a beloved part of Atlanta’s thriving installation dance scene” fueled by a unique fusion of Malina’s production and design expertise, along with her advocacy for the local dance artists. In recognition of Dance Truck’s signifi cant contributions, Rodriguez received the 2011 Community Impact Award from Emory’s Center for Creativity & The Arts. This spring, Dance Truck will partner with the Los Angeles-based company, Dances Made To Order, to present online dance fi lms by three Atlanta choreographers, as well as make an appearance at Duluth’s Barefoot in the Park Festival. Dance truckers will perform in Houston, Texas this summer at The Big Range Festival. The grass roots company is rasing funds for their international premiere in Asia, with performances and artist talks in Septembers, 2012. You can follow Dance Truck on Facebook, Twitter, or at their blog: wwwdancetruck.org.

Created in 2007 by director/choreographer

Cherrise Wakeham, Project 7 Contemporary Dance Company is ever-evolving as the excitement surrounding contemporary commercial dance continues to make its way from stage to household through the internet and television. With the public spotlight on this genre of dance and with the sudden explosion of interest in dance, Project 7 strives to entertain their audience with unique stories about love, relationships, fear, passion, insight, and inspiration. Using a mix of both current and classical music, the choreography takes on images that evoke a familiarity with these stories and ultimately, turns dance

into a personal experience for the viewer.Ms. Wakeham is widely known for her choreography

in contemporary commercial dance. Her pieces have been selected to perform at the Joyce Theatre, the Capezio Ace Awards, and for The Pulse’s gala summer show in NYC. In addition, one of her pieces was chosen as Dance Spirit Magazine’s Video of the Year.

Project 7 produces two full length shows each year: a winter performance at 7 Stages and a summer production; The, Land, The Sea, and The Creationist at the 14th Street Playhouse. They are also invited to guest perform for many diverse programs throughout Atlanta and they hold master classes in studios and colleges throughout the Southeast.

Project 7 members are students of Emory University, Georgia Tech, University of Georgia, and Berry College. In addition to their academic pursuits, they are fi nalists from So You Think You Can Dance and have traveled with and assisted some of the foremost commercial dance

instructors in the world. They are invited to appear in music videos and perform in both TV, fi lm, and on stage as well as with the hip-hop crew, Swagger Crew.

With their pulse on the youth of today, their understanding of the art of dance as well as the commercial and entertainment aspects of the industry, Project 7 has strived to bring their style of dance to Atlanta and beyond with the goal of entertaining and broadening the awareness for this artistic and industrious form of dance. While many arts disciplines trace their heritage to founding fathers, modern dance traces its roots largely to founding mothers. To celebrate

Women’s History Month, the Agnes Scott College Dance Program and Zoetic Dance Ensemble come together to honor the pioneering women that sought to create an art form refl ecting the sensibilities of the modern woman. Zoetic’s work is inspired by the unique voice, vision and experience of contemporary female artists. Coming from the Greek ‘zoe,’ Zoetic means living, vital and animated which accurately describes this highly acclaimed company of women. The Agnes Scott College Dance Program is focused on technique, creative expression, and a scholarly understanding of the historical legacy and sociological impact of dance. Led by Bridget Roosa, the Dance Program offers a well-rounded, creative and critical approach to dance.

The residency refl ects Zoetic’s initiative to foster the creative and contemporary voices of female artists. “Women’s History Month is the perfect time to celebrate our roots and traditions while illustrating the impact female dance artists have on Georgia’s cultural landscape,” says Zoetic’s Director Melanie Lynch-Blanchard. “We’ve offered many programs in universities and high schools, but this marks our fi rst true collaboration.”

Zoetic’s artists and Agnes Scott dance students are working together to explore the societal conventions that were challenged and changed by founding mothers of modern dance, including notable fi gures like Ruth St. Denis and Martha Graham. “We’re asking students to consider what

is taboo for women today, and whether young women understand their history,” explains Lynch-Blanchard. Bhumi Patel, a senior at Agnes Scott

responds: “In a world where we are taught that other women are our competition, here we are reminded to trust, embrace, and form

physically intimate relationships with our peers. How else could we dance together? This has caused me to go out into the world with a better sense of self.”

The work resulting from these thoughtful explorations will be accompanied by original music by Joanie Ferguson. Performances take place at Agnes Scott College on April 13, 14 and 15, and the Inman Park Dance Festival

on April 28 and 29. For details visit www.zoeticdance.org.

ehind every “happy ending” there is usually a fascinating story, and Gwinnett Ballet Theatre has a good one. This story involves two Artistic Directors and a former student of one of them and is set in locales from Tucson, Arizona, to

Snellville, Georgia. The “happily ever after” is new artistic leadership for the 35-year-old pre-professional dance company.

During the mid 1980’s, Wade Walthall was Principal Dancer for Pacifi c Northwest Ballet. Lisa Sheppard Robson admired his artistry as she performed in the PNB corp de ballet. 25 years later, Lisa is handing over the reins of GBT to a new artistic director, named Wade Walthall.

Lisa taught many students during her 14-year tenure at GBT, and one of them, John Streit of Snellville, GA, went on to a dance career capped by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Dance from the University of Arizona. While in Tucson, John met fellow student Wade Walthall, and they became friends. Upon graduation, John and Wade traveled to Atlanta to prospect job opportunities along the way. A chance meeting in a local restaurant brought Lisa and John together one evening, and introductions were made.

“Connecting with Wade was purely a coincidence,” says Lisa. “And of course I remembered him and his exquisite artistry and dancing from PNB.”

Mr. Walthall soon became the perfect candidate for GBT’s Artistic Directorship. His resume begins with his graduation as a Ford Foundation Scholar from the School of American Ballet. It ends with his acquiring the MFA in Dance from University of Arizona. In between, Mr. Walthall enjoyed a career in dance spanning 18 countries and countless collaborations. His fi rst assignment was as Principal Dancer for the National Ballet of Holland under Rudi van Dantzig. He was Principal at National Ballet of Spain and Pacifi c Northwest Ballet. He toured with “Rudolph Nureyev and Friends” as well as with Alexander Gudanov. He starred in “Nutcracker: the Motion Picture” with PNB.

He created and developed his own pre-professional company, Evergreen City Ballet in Seattle, WA, and led it successfully for 14 years. A desire to become an academic was overcome by the stronger wish to return to teaching, choreography, and the development of young dancers.

As Walthall begins his creative journey with GBT, his fi rst original production is nothing of a surprise, given the happily-ever-after nature of his arrival in Georgia. Walthall’s ballet “Cinderella” will be performed by GBT on March 3 at the Gwinnett Performing Arts Center in Duluth, GA.

arefoot in the Park Arts Festival announces their 8th year of bringing arts, food, and fun for all ages to the Duluth Town Green on May 4, 5, and 6. This popular regional arts festival welcomed approximately 15,000 attendees last

year, a record number. This year, there will be even more to see and experience.

Approximately 100 tents containing fi ne artwork of artists from across the Southeast and beyond will vie for visitors’ attention with a continuous schedule of musicians and dancers on two separate performing venues. A Children’s Art Tent, a Book Bistro, an Adult Learning Village, a Wine Tasting, and a Student Exhibition of artwork from Gwinnett schools are also a part of the festival.

The Barefoot Gala will kick off the event. Held on Friday, May 4th beginning at 7:00 p.m., this year’s Gala will be titled “Carnevale,” featuring decorations and entertainment with a Caribbean festival fl avor. The Gala will also feature fi ne food, wine and exciting performances, including a premiere work created just for Barefoot by Dance Truck. But it is the silent auction during the Gala that contributes to the second special component of the Barefoot Festival, its Scholarship Program.

The Barefoot in the Park Arts Festival Scholarship Program has awarded over $43,000 to area arts and educational organizations since the festival began. Money made through the Gala’s Silent Auction and other income is put back into the

community to ensure that Gwinnett’s artists and students have what they need to thrive.

Barefoot’s Executive Director Caryn McGarity says, “Our Festival is fun for the many families and individuals who attend. They get to see and do so much! But there is another reason we work so hard to create this exciting event. Giving back to our area arts organizations is one of our primary goals, which we do through our Scholarship Program. As a fellow non-profi t organization, Barefoot in the Park feels the responsibility to support what it also showcases to the community-our arts.”

Motherhood the MusicalMotherhood the Musical ® is the joyous

journey and loving look at the blessings and perils of being a mom. It’s climbing the

emotional mountain only to fi nd that there’s laundry at the top. It’s discovering how powerful your love can be and how quickly your children grow up. It’s helping them fi nd their way and not losing yours. It’s about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears...and all before breakfast. It will remind you that it’s not just about Motherhood ... it’s about you. Jayson Smith returns to the company after performing in “Body Awareness”, and joins cast Jackie Costello and Robert Mello. In true Mamet style, “Speed-the-Plow” is back-stabbingly great fun that will offer Atlanta a compelling night of theatre that you won’t want to miss. For tickets and other info visit: www.pnotheatre.orgSpeed-the-Plow by David MametMarch 29 - April 29, 2012.

the Center for Puppetry arts Presents White Like MeThe Center for Puppetry Arts is proud to

present celebrated political satirist Paul Zaloom and his new piece, White Like Me: a Honky-Dory Puppet Show, a comedy about the changing face of race in America that tackles the gnarly subject of the upcoming de-honky-ization of the United States when white people in America will be what art critic Lucy Lippard once called, “just another other.” Employing toy theater puppetry and ventriloquism, Zaloom explores hidden anxieties among the Caucasian majority, including his own.

White Like Me: a Honky-Dory Puppet Show will be performed for three night only: April 20 to April 22, 2012. The show is restricted to ages 18+ ONLY. To purchase tickets or for more information, please visit: www.puppet.org/perform/whitelikeme.shtml

History can repeat itself. It can also top itself.

It is more than the next 911. It is an articulation, from the ground up, of our vision for the

future of the sports car. 400 immensely powerful horses from a 3.8 liter engine in the

Carrera S. A longer wheelbase for added stability. And a new elevated center console that

reinforces our focus on the driver. Proving once again that despite over 60 years of making

history, it’s making history. Call today to schedule a test drive.

The next Porsche 911. Forever the sports car.
