South Host Hoops for HopeOn Jan 23, 2015, South Paulding High School hosted their 6th Annual Hoops for
Hope when they hosted East Paulding HS. This event is hosted to bring awarenessto the fight against cancer. In 2013 it was estimated that there were 1,660,290 new
cases of cancer diagnosed and in 2013, there were more than half a million deaths
from cancer. In today’s world it is rare to find someone who has not been touched
by this disease as either a patient, family member or friend and the Spartan family
and Raider families are no exception. Honored that evening was Dr. Kenneth Nye,
who is the father of Head Coach Kelly Nye-Hinkson. Dr. Nye was recently diag-
nosed with prostate cancer and in December 2014, he underwent surgery in Nash-
ville, TN at St. Thomas Hospital. Recently, he and his family received an optimistic
cancer free pathology report, but like most cancer survivors he will continue dili-gent frequent testing to assure the cancer treatment was effective. Dr. Ken and Bar-
bara Nye, his wife, have been great supporters and sponsors of the Girls’ Basketball
program at SPHS since its beginning in 2006. Dr. and Mrs. Nye were on hand to
support Kelly, their daughter, and the entire SPHS Basketball program. SPHS pre-
sented the game ball to Dr. Nye in honor of his support for the SPHS For the Cure
event and to recognize Dr. Nye as a cancer survivor.

“Effort is replenishable. There is no need to save anyof it. Leave every bit you have on the playing field
each day”-Mike Krzyzewski
The older you get the more im-
portant it is to work on your bal-
ancing exercises
No matter what your age, doing exercises
that help you maintain balance will help you
stay on your feet longer. Balance problems
frequently affect older adults, so the sooner
you can incorporate moves like the yoga tree
pose into your routine, the better off you’ll be
down the road. In one study, men who had
suffered strokes participated in twice-weeklyyoga sessions and saw improvements in bal-
ance and endurance. These improvements
motivated them to become more physically
active in their communities. An easy way to
get started: Stand on one foot while brushing
your teeth, switching every time you feel the
need.
