43 ATC Training Centre Information

• 43 Air School is one of only two Training Organisations to offer ATC Training Courses in South Africa.

• The training centre is managed by Brian van Hout; he is an ex-South African Air Force ATC Instructor.

• The Aerodrome Simulator, the Barlog 360 is the only 360 degree visual Aerodrome Simulator in South Africa and is approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

• 43 Air School now offers Air Traffic Service Assistant (ATSA) and Aerodrome Controller (ADC) qualifications.

• 43 Air School will extend its current Cadet Scheme to include ATC Cadets.

• The Barlog 360 Aerodrome Simulator was developed, constructed and built by a South African company, Barlog Management Systems.

• The simulator build and installation was realised after 5 years of research and development.

Eastern Cape Government

MEC for Transport, Roads and Public Works, Hon Thandiswa Warawu was born of a working class family in the small town of Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. She was instrumental in the establishment of the ANCWL and ANC branches in Ugie. She became the first democratically elected Mayor of Ugie in 1995. She was elected as the Speaker of the Joe Gqabi District Municipality and later became the first female Executive Mayor to lead this municipality. Currently she is the Provincial Treasurer of the ANC in the Eastern Cape, Provincial Deputy Chairperson of the ANCWL and Joe Gqabi regional chairperson of the ANCWL. She was also the deputy chairperson of the South African Local Government Association in the Eastern Cape Province. MEC Marawu has proven to be a true servant of the people and remains strongly attached to the ordinary people on the ground.

Lieutenant General Carlo Gagiano joined the South African Air Force in 1968 and qualified as a pilot on the Air Macchi MB326M in December 1969. During his career he flew the Harvard, Pilatus PC 7, Vampire, F86 Sabre, Mirage III, F1CZ, as well as the Cheetah D and E aircraft.

During 1985 he completed the South African Air Force’s Senior Command and Staff Course and was subsequently appointed as the Officer Commanding 3 Squadron, operating F1CZ aircraft. In 1989 he was appointed as the Officer Commanding 89 Combat Flying School with Cheetah D aircraft. He occupied the post of military attaché in Israel from 1991 to his return to South Africa in January 1994. He completed the South African National Defence Force’s Joint Staff Course in November 1994 and was then transferred to Central Flying School Langebaanweg as the Officer Commanding. After a four-year tour at Langebaanweg, he was transferred to the Air Force HQ in December 1998, promoted to Brigadier General and appointed as Inspector General of the Air Force.

On 1 November 2000 he was promoted to Major General and appointed as Chief Director Operations Development at the Joint Operations Division, responsible for defence capabilities, joint force employment strategy, joint command and control and joint doctrine. After a three-year tour at the Joint Operations Division he was transferred back to the South African Air Force as Chief Director Air Policy and Plans, responsible for Air Force policy, capabilities, strategy and resource allocation. Lieutenant General Gagiano was appointed as Chief of the Air Force with effect of 1 March 2005. Lieutenant General Gagiano is married to Leonie.

Keynote Speakers

ATTIE NIEMANN

Born in Pretoria on 7th November 1961. From a very young age he wanted nothing else but to fly fighters and many a day could be found dreaming about aircraft at local Wonderboom Airport. He says he was very fortunate to be involved in flying from a young age.

He joined the military in 1980 and was selected for SAAF Pilot training where he obtained wings in 1982

and qualified on Harvards and Impala Jet Aircraft. Selected for fighter pilot training and graduated from Impala Operational Conversion Course and soon progressed to Impala Flight Leaders Course where he finished with top honours in 1984. One of only 2 students selected to advance to the much sought after Mirage Operational Conversion (due to the Cheetah project) and in 1985 transferred to 2 Sqn Afb Hoedspruit to commence his Mirage OCC and qualified on Mirage 111 CZ and BZ fighter aircraft and then transferred to Mirage F1CZ at 3 Sqn AFB Waterkloof. Attie flew 21 Operational Combat Missions during the Angolan war. During the 1991 International AAD he was the SAAF solo display pilot on the Mirage F1CZ. He also studied for his SA Commercial and FAA ATP license and later on was fortunate enough to do many a ferry of various types of aircraft from the US and other countries to South Africa.

He studied B Comm. part time at Unisa and with his entrepreneurial spirit soon started his own Construction Company and after selling it, started a successful Aircraft Charter business. In 1998 he sold Streamline Aviation with 24 Aircraft including 4 x Casa235 Aircraft to Imperial through its Aviation Division and joined National Airways & Finance Corporation as a shareholder and was appointed Group Executive Director Operations. Under his leadership NAC expanded its Fixed Wing and Helicopter Charter and International Operations to a large and very successful operation with over 100 aircraft and 300 Aircrew operating in many countries all over the globe. In 2002 he also became a board member of 43 Air School after leading the team that acquired 43 Air School for the NAFCO group. He was instrumental in many of the ambitious projects at 43 during that period including establishment of 43 Advanced Training and 43 has been one of his passions ever since. In 2009 he was appointed Group CEO of 43 Air School.

He is engaged to Lisa and between them they have 3 boys Neil (22), Ruben (15) and Peter -John (10). Flying and owning Vintage and Classic aircraft is but one of his interests and he loves nothing more that sharing an open cockpit in a Stearman with one of the many young students or cadet’s at 43. Soon after taking the helm at 43 he reintroduced the 1943 slogan of “Work Hard Play Hard” although in a slightly updated form of “Work Smart Play Hard”. He says that he was very fortunate in life to be able to mix flying and business and appreciates the privilege of being able to work and learn from the best in aviation and business every day.

Keynote Speakers

MARTIN BANNER

Martin Banner joined National Airways Corporation (NAC) in May 2002 as Chief Executive Officer. A subsidiary of the JSE listed Imperial Holdings, NAC has three core businesses, Aircraft Sales, Maintenance and Flight Operations.

He began his career in sales and marketing in the clothing industry before joining South African Breweries (now SABMiller) as Senior Executive: Brand Marketing between 1987 and 1993. From 1994 to 2002, he owned three private businesses involved in IT, retail and distribution; businesses that were successfully sold to various listed groups by 2002. Having been a customer of NAC since 1995, he was approached to join the company in 2002.

In 1976, Martin graduated from the Infantry Officers School in Oudtshoorn, South Africa and completed his military career as a Captain in the Army Reserves, having served in the Angolan conflict as a company commander.

Martin is a Bachelor of Commerce graduate of the University of South Africa, having majored in Economics, Business Economics and Commercial Law.

RYAN FORRESTER

Ryan Forrester, who has been involved in aviation and asset finance for the last 15 years, is a Director of both Aircraft Finance Corporation & Airborne Insurance Consultants which were founded in 1995. Together with a passion for aircraft and excellent service, Ryan has succeeded in building and maintaining a number of companies that have excellent reputations and offers clients a 360° service.

Ryan attended St Stithians High School in Johannesburg, after matriculating in 1990 he attended the University of Natal in Pietermaritzburg. Ryan travelled abroad and worked with companies such as Bell Helicopters in the USA and JP Morgan / Pinnacle Alliance in London. On returning to South Africa Ryan joined Imperial Bank as their Aviation Marketing & Finance Manager, he then moved on and joined Aviation Finance Solutions before taking the giant leap of forming his first company - Aircraft Finance Corporation in 1995. Today AFC is the largest independent aviation finance brokerage in Africa.

Apart from his aviation interests, Ryan has extended his Director portfolio of companies to include Konika Minolta Touch, AR Finance (Asset and Rental Finance) and Machine Vending Engineering Africa (Pizza-on-the-Fly). Apart from Ryan being a Director of the above mentioned companies he is also a Commercially Rated Pilot with Instrument rating and flies aircraft up to a King Air 200.

Excellence in Aviation Training Integrated ATP (A) and (H) Training Course

43 Air School now provides South Africa’s only SACAA Approved Integrated ATP course for both Fixed Wing and Rotor wing aircraft. In compliance with CATS 61 FCL Appendix 3, our integrated programme offers the most effective route to a professional pilot license.

All students study and write only 11 examinations at the All students study and write only 11 examinations at the theoretical knowledge standard for the Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) versus the traditional examination route requiring 22 exams at three levels. On completion of the 54 week syllabus, the graduate will hold a SACAA Commercial Pilot’s Licence with Instrument Rating (CPL/IR) – which can be referred to as a ‘Frozen ATP’. This allows the straight foallows the straight forward issue of the ATPL qualification as soon as the mandatory minimum flying experience has been achieved.

Applicants for this course do not require previous flying experience. It is what is known as an "ab initio" course - meaning "from the beginning". However, if you already have a PPL, you can join the course once having completed abridgement training. Globally, the Integrated ATP training programme is well respected, as it offers a higher standard of graduate pilot.

• Today the school is one of the largest and most respected flying training establishments in Africa, with an international reputation for providing a highly quality flying training service.

• Courses are approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, and range from basic flying training to integrated “Frozen ATPL (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) level.

• Specialised modules such as aerobatics, MCC (Multi Crew Training), CRM (Crew Resource Management) and Turbine Type Ratings are provided as required.

• The school operates one of the world’s largest Piper Aircraft fleets, with a fleet size in excess of 70 training aircraft, plus it has a Cessna C208B and King Air B200 for more advanced turbine ratings. 43 Air School is also a Piper Authorised Dealer and offer aircraft sales through its aircraft sales division.

• The staff compliment is in excess of 300 people made up of instructors and support staff. With approximately 70 full-time flight and ground instructors, consistency of training is provided.

Full residential facilities for an average student population of 300 cadet pilots are provided at its Port Alfred and Bhisho campuses.

Our residential campuses are very much like a University campus, with halls of residence, restaurant’s, sports and recreation centres, bar, café with Wi-Fi internet access.

43 Air School hold the Aerodrome Operators License for Port Alfred airport, while Bhisho and Lanseria are separately operated. All the airports are licensed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

• Our Lanseria campus is the home of our advanced training school.

• The school is equipped with a Mechtronix FNPT II MCC simulator (credits for King Air 90, 200, 300/350 and Raytheon Beechcraft 1900 aircraft, plus Piper Seneca V) and currently Africa’s only Embraer 120 FNPT II MCC simulator.

• These devices are used for type rating training, proficiency checks and instrument rating renewals.

• Safety is our highest priority. As many as 5000 hours have been flown in a month at 43 Air School. Our dedicated in-house maintenance organisation ensures each of our aircraft is in tip top condition.

Cessna Caravan

Description: The Cessna 208 Caravan is a single turboprop engine, fixed-gear short-haul regional airliner and utility aircraft built in the United States by Cessna. The airplane typically seats nine passengers, with a single person crew, although with a FAR Part 23 waiver, it can seat up to fourteen passengers. The aircraft is also used for cargo feederliner operations.

Engine: Pratt & Whitney PT6A-114A , 505 kW (677 hp).

King Air B200

The Beechcraft Super King Air family is part of a line of twin-turboprop aircraft produced by the Beech Aircraft Corporation (now the Beechcraft Division of Hawker Beechcraft). The King Air line comprises a number of model series that fall into two families: the Model 90 series, Model 100 series (these models comprising the King Air family), Model 200 series and Model 300 series. The latter two models were originally marketed as the “Super King Air” family, but the “Super” was dropped in 1996.

Bell 206

Manufacturer: Bell HelicopterModel: Bell 206 JetRangerDescription: The Bell 206 is a family of two-bladed, single- or twin-engine helicopters, manufactured by Bell Helicopter at its Mirabel, Quebec plant. Originally developed as the Bell YOH-4 for the United States Army’s Light Observation Helicopter program, the 206 failed to be selected. Bell redesigned the airframe and successfully marketed the aircraft commercially as the five-place Bell 206A JetRanger. The new design was eventually selected by the Army as the OH-58 Kiowa. Bell also developed a seven-place LongRanger, which was later offered with a twin-engine option as the TwinRanger, while Tridair Helicopters offers a similar conversion of the LongRanger called the Gemini ST. The ICAO-assigned model designation “B06” is used on flight plans for the JetRanger and LongRanger, and the designation “B06T” is used for the twin-engine TwinRangers.
