2020 Commemorative Program 88th Annual Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music

Media Release March 13, 2020 The Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music (GCKFM)

All classes of the 2020 Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music are cancelled.

This difficult decision was reached by the Board of Directors after discussions concerning the effects of low registration numbers due to the labour dispute plus the closure of schools from March 14 to April 5. The Board recognizes the importance of limiting public exposure currently. Maintaining recommended public health practices can help to ease the burden on our health care system and protect our vulnerable citizens.

We remain indebted to the many groups and individuals that make the Festival a success for our many registrants.

We wish to thank the Kiwanis Club of Owen Sound, the Meaford Kiwanis Club, Tamming Law, Markale IDA/Flesherton Pharmacy, Bayshore Broadcasting and all our registrants, volunteers, advertisers, venues, contractors, sponsors and donors for their ongoing support. We applaud teachers, adjudicators, participants, and organizers for their continued efforts to make the Festival a success, year after year.

We welcome donations of any kind to offset expenses incurred in setting up the Festival.

The GCKFM will be contacting all stakeholders about how to proceed with the process of arranging the remaining business of this year as well as possible additional projects for the future.

Why this Commemorative Program? As the Festival Coordinator, I’ve come to know many of our participants, parents, teachers, adjudicators, venues, advertisers, sponsors, contractors, etc.

The program was almost complete and ready to be sent to the printer when the entire festival was cancelled on Friday, March 13, 2020.

While I busied myself with cancelling everything I’d set up, I couldn’t help but marvel at the number of students who had signed up, practiced, and perhaps even perfected their pieces.

This Commemorative Program is in our participants’ honour. Thank you to all who stood by the festival during these strange days.

- Karen Kyle, Festival Coordinator

2020 Commemorative Program 88th Annual Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music

Message from our Festival Chair

“Music can change the world”

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 88th Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music. Once again, musical performances will be presented in Owen Sound and Meaford in various settings and styles. Whether you are an entrant, a teacher/mentor, parent or audience member, you will see musicians at all levels pursue excellence and gain performance experience during our Festival.

The support and efforts of groups and individuals make our festival a success. Thank you to the Kiwanis Clubs of Owen Sound and Meaford

for their ongoing co-sponsorship. We thank Tamming Law and Bayshore Broadcasting Mix 106.5 as well as all other sponsors and donors for their financial support. The work of the Festival Board, Festival Coordinator and instructors who guide our efforts and planning are greatly appreciated as well. Thanks to our volunteers who assist in many ways.

We are grateful for the use of space provided in venues for Festival classes. This allows participants to perform in settings that are appropriate for their discipline and adjudication.

The Festival acknowledges the expertise and dedication our adjudicators exhibit in working with us; their valuable input informs various aspects of our musical journeys.

Finally, we applaud the dedication and perseverance of our entrants. The Festival is often a special event in the lives of those who have participated in it. Skills learned in experiences like this can be applied to other occupations and situations in life. We are proud to be part of the social development of the competitors.

Beethoven is credited with saying that “Music can change the world.” So, let your music ring out and see where it takes you!

I hope you enjoy the 2020 Grey County Kiwanis Festival of Music!
