    Our library is proud to have been gifted a number of works of art in many different mediums. The art starts from the moment

    you enter the lobby and continues throughout the building. We hope that this booklet will not only inform

    but also add to your enjoyment of the library.

    This untitled bright brass sculpture is situated on a pedestal in the Library Lobby. It was created by Arthur Schneider in memory of Rebecca Lamb, Youth Librarian and Assistant Director.

    The large bronze sculpture titled Quest is by artist Edward

    Kasprowicz. It is located across from the Circulation Desk, just

    past the Library Lobby, and was a gift to the library in 1989

    The Bears were all hand-crafted by artist Carolyn Vosburg Hall and were a gift to the library by the Friends in celebration of the library’s 20th anniversary in 1984.

    The largest of the Bears is named Cecil and hangs

    from a set of rings. 

    The middle sized bear, named Abercrombie, hangs by his heels from a trapeze bar.

    The smallest of the Bears, named Ebeneezer, is situated on a swing.

    The covered wagon oil painting is located on the back wall of the Local History area. The work is by Detroit artist John S. Coppin, and is signed and dated 1961. This painting was a study for the Man’s Mobility triptych, which is located in the Adam Strohm Hall of the Detroit Public Library.

    This is a large model of the U.S.S. Constitution, located in the Local History area.

    The following items are located in the Local History Area.

    Ellen and Jack Keenan, Local artists and dedicated community volunteers, selected the BTPL for a special project. Together they designed and painted the windows of the Youth Services department to coordinate with the Summer Reading Program themes. For ten summers, hundreds of children and adults were delighted to see the magical Keenan Windows as they entered the building. Below are the original studies for these windows, painted by Jack Keenan in preparation for his and Ellen’s work on the finished, full sized design. Three additional studies may be seen on the following page.

    This is a graphic representation of the large circle of resin panels which is suspended above the Youth Services desk. The work is titled “A Conversation with the Grandkids”. The panels were designed by James Mumby and Tracy Petrella of Fanning Howey, Inc.

    The Feature Wall is located midway down the center of the library, across from the Adult Services Desk.

    This soapstone sculpture, donated in 1979, was a gift from the students and faculty of Vaughan School. It is not currently on display.

    Titled “A Different Alphabet,” this piece of kinetic art is made of silver leaf on Mylar, suspended from a stainless steel armature. A piece of flat, smooth red metal lies flat against the wall on the bottom right section of the work. The entire work measures 4.5 feet high by 16 feet long. Artist: Lynda Cole
