Cleethorpes Golf Club has recently

registered as an HSBC Golf Roots

Centre. What is a Golf

Roots Centre I hear

you ask (hopefully!)?

HSBC Golf Roots is

the Golf Foundation’s

national programme

that gives children and

young people the

opportunity to

experience golf and

the benefits it has to offer.

Being a Golf Roots Centre

allows us, as a club, to

deliver HSBC Golf Roots

projects and to access

grants to deliver projects

for young people.

An important aspect of

being a Golf Roots

Centre is the facility

to be able to run the

Junior Golf

Passport scheme.

This is a national

structured learning

programme for

children aged 6 to 12

years and is

endorsed by the

PGA. The idea is that

under the guidance

of our PGA

professional, Robin

Goodway,

involvement in the

programme will help

to transform

complete beginners

into junior golfers

ready for regular play

and ultimately golf club membership.

The programme has three levels: START -

it’s all about fun; LEARN - a bit more

technical instruction; and PLAY - apply

learning to the golf course. Each child

registered on the programme will receive a

record of achievement booklet to track

their progress and access to an interactive

website with areas for the coach, child and

the child and includes quizzes

and games for the children as

well as much more. Each child

will receive certificates of

achievement and wrist bands to

denote their progression. The

programme is delivered using

session plans and game cards.

Most of all the Junior Passport is

aimed to give children fun whilst

learning the game of golf and

being fully interactive on the

practice area, golf course and

website.

Free taster sessions have been

offered to some local primary

schools with the aim of

encouraging the children to try

part in the Passport to Golf

The programme is in its

infancy and the hope is it

expands to increase the

number of children playing golf

as they are the future of our

great game.

Cleethorpes Golf Club has

also signed up to the HSBC

junior activity, yet

to be decided,

which will take

place during The

14th and 17th

July. It is hoped to follow the

example of tennis and the

‘Wimbledon effect’ to

generate extra public interest

in golf on the back of The

youngsters in to the game.

As well as youngsters it is also important

to introduce the game of golf to adults,

GET IN TO GOLF -

Professionals’ round-upWell summer conditions finally seem to

be upon us, giving the club and

ourselves a much needed feel good

factor! With the shop fully refurbished

we have had great comments, apart

from the ongoing issues in using the

new ticketing solution we have

subscribed to. Short term we have

price lists up in A4 format to assist you.

Particularly well received has been the

shoe wall, with a great selection for

you to browse over. Taylor Made M2

woods are clear favourites right now in

wood sales, closely followed by the

Ping G series. Irons are still seeing

Ping I and G series most popular.

As ever Flightscope fitting with Alex is

the best way to choose and right now

our club sales partners, Ping, Taylor

Made and Titleist are sponsoring a free

fitting and follow on half hour lesson

when you spend £299 or more in a

single transaction. Pop in for details.

Please support the upcoming events

such as Invitation day on 4 June, Pro

Am on 24 June and the Captain’s Am

Am on 26 June. Any new members not

sure where these entries need to be

pop in to see Rob, Alex or myself for

advice.

Playing wise I am really enjoying more

golf through the challenge matches

taking place with Captain Dave Reid

against any who fancy their chances.

£10 is paid into the Captains’ fund by

the losing pair, and the list (on the

outside of the men’s locker door).still

has spaces. To date we have won 2

and lost 1!!!

We in the shop hope the better

weather brings out your best golf, but

as ever if you need fine tuning our

lesson plans are here to help.

Cheers Paul

Monday 18 April saw

the Senior Ladies’

Section celebrate its

26th birthday. Ten

ladies played for the

Birthday Cup which

was won by Anne

Poultney with Brenda

Guyll as runner up.

The cup was

presented to Anne by

Pat Williams who had

gifted it to the Senior

Ladies’ Section. Pat

also kindly supplied

the prizes together with some raffle

prizes.After the

competition, 26

ladies enjoyed a

lovely buffet.

Present at the buffet

were three ladies

who had attended

the inaugural

meeting of the

section in 1990:

Mary Shorter, the

original Lady

President of the

section Kath

Stones, and Dot

Singleton with a

combined age of 280!

Chipping on to the green from the fast growing grassaround the greens can prove tricky. The trick is to get theclubface steeply into the ball toavoid any grass getting betweenclubface and ball. Use a 56specialist wedge, play the ballmore to the right foot ( for righthanded players ) but keep theweight leaning to the left. Let yourhands ‘pick’ the club up steeplyand on a straight line, and thenhold the clubface open throughimpact. The club should feel it ismoving in a fast chopping action.Don’t forget the ball will alwaysrun out more from long grass, especially when wet.

3 - GET IN TO CLEETHORPES GOLF

What a start to the new season we have

had. We have cancelled two midweek

competitions in April and postponed both

the Bill Brown Rosebowl and the Seddon

Cup due to water logging .

Well hopefully that is the bad news over

with. The season started in earnest on

Saturday 7th April with the first Cup

competition of the year, namely the

Moody Cup. Congratulations to Simon

Thomas on leading the way with an

excellent Net 66 (Gross 75) won on

count back from Jack Evans also with a

Net 66 (Gross 72).

Postponed competitions will be

rescheduled for later in the season.

Dates of competitions can be found in

the 2016 fixture book. Details can also

be found on the club website

(www.cleethorpesgolfclub.com) in the

diary on the home and member pages.

Reminder – Please see the Knock Out

draw sheets in the men’s locker room.

Deadline dates for each round are

shown on the sheets. Please adhere

to those dates – we don’t want anyone

eliminated because they left it too

late.

Up to date handicaps can be found on

the club’s website. You can also check

your handicap by using

www.howdidido.co.uk

I would also like to remind members that

the first Invitation Day for the men is on

Saturday 4 June 2016. We have decided

to change the format this year. The

competition will be a betterball stableford

with a maximum handicap of 24 and an

allowance of 9/10. Entries are being

taken in the pro shop. Last year’s

numbers were disappointing so please

give it some thought and invite someone

from another club to come and play our

course.

Although it is a bit of a way off but I

would like to remind members that the

Mens Captain’s Day will be held on

Saturday 6 August. Look out for notices

and let’s support Dave.

One or Two reminders:

* Tie resolution – Please note we are

reverting to count-back should there be

ties in competitions this summer.

* The fourball betterball allowance has

been increased from 75% to 90% for

both stroke-play and match-play.

* The competition standard scratch now

includes category 4 players (20.5 – 28.0

handicaps).

* In order to win a qualifying competition

you must have an active CONGU

handicap – denoted with a ‘c’ on the

handicap register.

* It is the player’s responsibility to return

all qualifying competition cards to the

committee and make such computer

entries as may be required. This

includes ‘No Returns’. In the past some

competitors have thought it unnecessary

to enter their score card if they have a

‘No Return’ – this is not the case. You

must enter your score in the terminal or

if you are unable to do so please put

your card through the letterbox in the

secretary’s office. This would be greatly

appreciated by those trying to finalise

the Competition.

* Members are reminded that on

competition days competitors and

non-competitors must play in either twos

or three balls unless directed otherwise.

Four balls are not allowed on

competition days (except when midweek

medals and stablefords are being

played).

Men’s Comps and Handicaps

Course maintenanceAs this is published I believe we may be moving towards

something like spring or dare I even say, summer, weather.

The winter has been one of the longest ever experienced. Whilst

up until Christmas it remained mild and reasonably dry, the turn of

the year brought cool weather with constant periods of heavy

rainfall.

Obviously there is only so much rain that a site like ours can take

and whilst every effort is made to stay open, there are times when

course closure is necessary.

Going forward into Spring the course is certainly benefitting from

the restrictions imposed during the winter in the form of white

lines, ropes and winter tees meaning that areas that were worn

due to winter play in previous years now have good grass

coverage. Hopefully all members will see the benefits of these

winter restrictions, despite the inconveniences that they can

cause.

Our main focus this winter has been the planting of almost 700

trees donated by the tree fund. So far they have benefitted from

all the recent rainfall and I am pleased to say that almost every

tree is coming into life, some having already nearly doubled in

height! It would be appreciated if all golfers follow the rules posted

in the clubhouse regarding the trees, in order to give them the

best possible chance of survival.

The flush of spring outfield growth is now upon us and we are

working hard to keep on top of all the grass cutting. This is a

difficult time as manpower and machinery limitations mean areas

cannot be cut as often as they need to. Certain areas of the

course also grow quicker and thicker than others which can give

the appearance of not being mown, when they actually have.

The greens are currently providing good firm surfaces to play on.

However due to the cold, wet April they are roughly 3-4 weeks

behind the condition where they should be now. We have carried

out a lot of beneficial work with our new “thatchaway” vertical

cutting units in the past month. This has helped remove lots of the

flat lying coarse grass from the greens surfaces. However, the

poor weather has slowed recovery, leading to some thinning out

of the grass in places. This will soon recover with some consistent

warm weather.

Our management of the long rough is going to be different this

year. After cutting and collecting it for the first time in many years,

we are going to spray it to remove weeds and thin out the coarser

grass. The areas will be kept mown at a manageable height so

that it may still be possible to find balls in there, but still be a

hazard to play out of. It will take a few years of work to get the

areas looking exactly how we want them to.

Somehow over a year has passed since my arrival. I would like to

thank everyone for their kind words and positive feedback in this

time. Whilst it is not always possible to please everyone all the

time and get things right straightaway, our aim is always the

continuing improvement of the golf course.

Many thanks. Steve Beverly, Head Greenkeeper

The Eddie Soulfinger evening went extremely well and we hope to see

his return in the future should members so wish.

and meet new members. The dates are in the fixture book - watch out

for team sheets on the social board.

The Millennium Cup will be played on Monday 29th August.

their fireworks with a Halloween theme on Sunday 30th October. Food

will be available on the day.

The sale of New Year’s Eve tickets will be on Friday 18th November

for those wishing to attend. There will be an optional curry meal on

sale for those wishing to make an evening of it.

Keep an eye out for posters and emails with more information on all

social events nearer the time.

Finally, Chairman, Liz Stones, has still been receiving complaints

from members about slow play... She would like to remind members

that if they lose ground on the players in front they should be

courteous and let any golfers waiting behind them through and not

leave them waiting.
