INTRODUCTIONA syllabus is an outline and summary of topics to be covered in education or

training courses. It is often said by an exam board which is given duty of

identifying the key aspect and notions that should be imparted to the students. The

syllabus ensures a fair and impartial understanding between the instructor and

students such that there is minimal confusion on policies related to the course

setting clear expectation of materials to be learned etc. In India we generally

follow three types of syllable in addition to the international syllabus IGCSE or IB.

The three other syllabus types in India are

ICSE/ISE

CBSE

STATE SYLLABUS State syllabus is followed by the schools affiliated to individual boards of the states

of India. So unlike CBSE & ICSE state syllabus is different states may vary. The

syllabus followed in the state of Tamil Nadu might be entirely different from the

one followed in Kerala. State board syllabus in each of the state is designed by the

department of the concerned state government that is why there is syllabus change

for every state in India. Each state government looks after educational issues

pertaining to this system. One of the important feature of the state syllabus is that

they try to accommodate even students with lower IQ to complete their schooling

successfully. Although this is a matter of controversy. It helps in popularizing the

education even at the lower strata of the society.

STATE SYLLABUS IN KERALAIn Kerala, the state board of education is controlled by the state council for

educational research and training (SCERT) which works under the department of

education. The board prepares the syllabus for the schools affiliated with it. The

whole schooling structure is divided as follows:

Kindergarten (LKG & UKG -optional)

Lower primary (Standard one to four )

Upper Primary (STD 5-7)

High School (STD 8-10)

Higher Secondary (STD 11 & 12)

Usually the whole system of KG, LP, UP, and it is referred to as high school.

Students completing this courses one to ten with optional KG will be awarded with

the secondary school leaving certificate (SSLC) Based on the results in SSLC,

students are controlled into higher secondary education (HSE). Higher secondary

offers a wide range of subjects according to the candidate’s preference. After

completing HSE students are awarded with HSE certificate which enables them for

university education. The state syllabus follows the directions given by the national

curriculum framework and the Kerala curriculum framework. The syllabus tries to

overcome the undemocratic power structures followed in the classrooms. Passive

listening was one of the demerits of the prevailing system. So recently there was an

effort to correct this and encourage active participation. Thus the construction of

knowledge and its social dimensions become complementary. The topics and

contents included in the syllabus are current are relevant

Absence of a vision of universal humanism.

Lack of human resource development.

Lack of understanding of the specificity of cultural identity and its need to

develop freely.

Inability to see agriculture as a part of our culture

Lack of scientific approach to health and public health

Important of nationalism, self-sufficiency, cultural identity, democratic

rights etc…

The importance of ensuring a social system that taps human energy for

sustainable development.

The syllabus also follows all the aims of educations. Nationalism, Social

Justice, Awareness on environment, Citizenship, awareness of ones right

etc…..

The state syllabi also gives importance to the educational

technology. There are a number of endeavors like e-learning, IT @ School,

ANTS (Animation Training for Students) etc…. So it can be seen that the

curriculum framework is formulated based on the social issues. The learning

process gives importance to the psychology of the students. The syllabus

also gives importance to the concept formation. An equal importance is

given to the three domains and their development. Thus construction of

knowledge becomes complementary with the holistic development of the

child.

Thus in total state syllabus follows every possible ways

of empowering the child undoubtedly the state syllabus is relevant and

useful if it is implemented in the correct way.
