Gregor The Overlander

!   Plot

In Gregor The Overlander the author started the book in reality and gradually moved into fantasy when Gregor and his little sister Boots fall into the air duct in the laundry room. They ended up landing in a world of talking animals. There were rats, bats, cockroaches, and spiders to name a few. Most of the story takes place in the underground world with these huge talking animals. Gregor and his sister find their dad whom had disappeared two years ago. He also had fallen into the air duct. At the end of the story the author brings the characters back to reality when they finally make out of the underground world and enter their apartment in New York city.

!   Setting

The author does a great job in allowing the reader to be able to visualize the setting of the story. For example when the author describes Regalia. “The buildings were a lovely misty gray, which gave them a dreamlike quality.” It mentions how the buildings seem as if they had been grown instead of made by humans. “Thousands of torches were placed strategically so that a soft, dusky light illuminated the entire city.” The way the author described the city makes the reader visualize how it looks.

Skulduggery Pleasant

!   Plot

The author starts the story when a well known author dies while writing the last chapter to his book. After the funeral his niece Stephanie encounters Skulduggery at her dead uncle’s house. Skulduggery comes to her rescue and that’s when she realizes he is a skeleton and not a human being. This where the author moves the story into fantasy. Throughout the story Stephanie and Skulduggery fight the evil Serpine.

!   Style

The author places a vivid picture of what Skulduggery looks like when Stephanie is describing what she sees when Skulduggery takes off his hat and scarf. “With his sunglasses gone and his scarf hanging down, there was no denying the fact that he had no flesh, he had no skin, he had no eyes, and he had no face. All he had was a skull for a head.” After reading this the reader can foretell that the story just turned to fantasy.

Rapunzel’s Revenge

!   Theme

The author shows the theme of Rapunzel’s Revenge by showing how good always defeats evil. Rapunzel does what ever it takes to free her mother form Mother Gothel. She doesn’t give up and sacrifices her own life to free her biological mother whom she has only met once. At the end Rapunzel defeats Mother Gothel and everybody lives happy.

!   Character

In the beginning of the story Rapunzel is a young girl who carefree. As the story goes on we see how her character changes. Because of the situation she is in her character grows into a fearless young girl who will do anything to make things right. She fights for what she believes in.

The Graveyard Book

!   Plot

The author starts The Graveyard Book in reality when a man named Jack kills an entire family with the exception of a toddler boy who crawls into the graveyard and is taken in by ghosts. This is were the author slowly goes from reality to fiction. The story is about the life of this toddler as he grows up in the graveyard. Fourteen years have passed and Jack is looking for Nobody (the toddler) to finish his work by killing him. At the end of the book Nobody slowly looses his ability to see ghosts and is given money to start his new life else where.

!   Character

The main character of this story is the toddler, Nobody Owens. He just a toddler when he is taken in by the ghosts and we see how he grows through out the story and becomes a young adult. He is out to find out what happened to his family. Scarlett meets Jay Frost and realizes that he lives where Bod used to live when his family was killed. That’s when Bod meets Jay and finds out that Jay is Jack the person who killed his family.

Book’Em, Dog Man

!   Plot

In fantasy the plot often involves quest to vanquish villains. In Book’Em, Dog Man the villain Petey is out to make everyone dumb. Dog Man goes on a quest to demolish Petey. You can clearly see the plot the author was making when writing this story.

Book”Em, Dog Man

!   Theme

The theme of Book”EM, Dog Man is how good beats evil. Petey, the villain is out to make the world dumb. Dog Man goes on a quest to vanquish Petey and succeeds.
