Adding and Subtracting with Negatives

Adding and subtracting negatives is how many you take away or equal to.

Adding and subtracting negatives

Grouping one tile that’s both

+ and – = 0

Subtract – into a + will equal a + and + into a – will equal a

-

Add – into – will equal a – and -into a + will equal a +

5 + (-2)= take away -2 to 5

and it will equal 3

If you add a 8 + -9 it will equal a -1

1. The addition problem of a number can be representative as shaded boxes or unshaded boxes.

2. Group the two – tiles eith the other two + tiles since you took away both tiles you’ll end up + or – number.

3. For example lets take -3 + -3 if we take three shaded tiles we will have three more shaded tiles and it’ll equal -6 shaded tiles EX: 6 + -8 = -2 because you took away 6 unshaded boxes and you left off with 2 shaded boxes.
