Service Management

Service Management is a customer-focused approach to service delivery which crosses organizational boundaries

In the age of cloud computing and the coming age of Internet of Things (IoT), Service Management must be easily extensible, integratedand highly automated in order to continue to meet the needs of the business and respond to technological changes and advances

CONFIGMGRASSET MGMT BASICS

STARTSWITH DISCOVERY

CLIENTMGMT ONLY

INTUNEADDS EMM DATA

The richest asset data comes with the ConfigMgr client.

Intune integration and network discovery enable data acquisition for network and mobile devices, as well as network printers

You need to know what can be managed• Active Directory

discovery most common

• Network Discovery has it’s place

Rich management capabilities come with the client • Limited

management of non-client assets

• Numerousmethods to install the client

Enterprise mobilitymanagement (EMM) through Intune• Richer mobile

device data vs ActiveSync

• Not really an agent

• Integrated mgmt experience

Management Capabilities for Windows, Linux, Network and Mobile Devices

User Device Affinity Hardware Inventory Software Inventory

Associate user and device For all client-managed devices (Windows and *NIX) Only for Windows clients

Requires client for Windows devices Requires Intune for mobile devices

“Installed Applications” comes aspart of hardware inventory for *NIX

and mobile devices

Happens automatically for mobile devices with Intune

You can augment ConfigMgr discovery with the Registry to MOF Tool (Reg2Mof). More on this in the 2nd half of our session.

CONFIGMGRASSET MGMT BASICS

Once the client agent has been installed, you can really manage the asset• Asset Intelligence data

(Windows clients only)

• Software metering data (Windows clients only)

Many additional great client management features in Configuration Manager:

Not covered in this presentation as we’re only talking asset management

CONFIGMGRASSET MGMT DETAILS

User Device Affinity

• Important to tie user to device

• Lets you see device and software owners and users

Hardware Inventory

• The core component of asset management

• Collects a large set of attributes by default

• Includes data from Add/ Remove Programs for application inventory

• Fairly easy to extend (for WMI and Registry attributes)

Software Inventory

• Provides very little benefit for application inventory

• Seldom used anymore (no default scan rules in Configuration Manager 2012)

CONFIGMGRASSET MGMT LIMITATIONS

Configuration Manager is great for the basics. However it does not provide any advanced asset management capabilities, such as:

• True-up reporting, license blocking

License Management

• Is only as good as its database and detection method (methods for app detection keep changing)

• Suites versus individual Office products• CPU licensed products

Software Normalization

Page 14: Asset Management: Extending Configuration Manager with Cireson

1414

CONFIGMGRASSET MGMT LIMITATIONS

No financial dataContracts, vendors, purchase orders, cost centers, etc.

No real asset location identificationDoes provide IP subnets, but few know the IP subnet locations

Can only manipulate the data via one consoleAnd then only limited manipulation available – most discovered or inventoried and not configurable

Additional limitations of Configuration Manager asset management

• Software Metering Rules are easy to create • Metering data can be leveraged to:

– Automatically populate ConfigMgr collections

– Drive removal of software from computers where it’s unused

• Great raw data for quantifying software license needs

• Duplicate titles in software catalog limit utility of this data
