—Dear Colleagues,
On behalf of ASOHNS I extend an invitation and a very warm welcome to you, and your partners and families if possible, to attend our 68th Annual Scientific Meeting in Perth in 2018.
The ASOHNS ASM is renowned for delivering excellent opportunities for continued learning and development and peer interaction for our members, trainees and visitors.
We are confident the 2018 meeting will continue to uphold the high standard of our previous ASMs.
With so many rapid advances in medicine - particularly within our specialty - the meeting’s theme “Brave New World” is especially appropriate.
And while the program will focus on applying innovation to our practices, we expect the program’s content and structure to continue its approach in combining much-needed practical, “how to do it” information alongside updates on the latest techniques and developments in our specialty.
Apart from gaining increased theoretical knowledge, we know that one of the key benefits of attending these meetings is the chance to meet face-to-face with our friends and colleagues. Breakfast sessions and satellite meetings, together with social functions, will offer more relaxed and interactive opportunities for increasing skills and exchanging information and ideas.
For visitors travelling from interstate and overseas, we encourage you to bring your partners and families and extend your stay. Perth is a beautiful, dynamic and friendly city and the capital of Australia’s largest state, Western Australia, whose land area is as large as France, Spain, Germany and Scandinavia combined.
While it is one of the newest cities in the world, Perth is the gateway to some of the oldest, most diverse and visually dramatic landscapes on Earth. Well worth taking some family time out to explore and enjoy.
I look forward to welcoming you all to the ASOHNS ASM 2018.

—Dear Colleagues,
Preparations are well underway for the 68th Annual Scientific Meeting of ASOHNS to be held in Perth in March 2018.
The organising committee have finalised a list of eminent international speakers and I am delighted to invite you to Perth for this meeting.
The Australian surgical community is addressing challenges relating to behaviour and culture. There have also been exciting developments within our specialty that reflect our desire for continuing improvement and application of innovation to the benefit of our patients. All this is reflected in the theme of our meeting: “Brave New World”.
It will be held in the recently refurbished Crown Perth Convention Centre situated on the banks of Perth’s Swan River, offering an attractive and pleasing environment in close proximity to the modern CBD area.
I hope you will be able to attend the meeting and perhaps extend your stay for a holiday to visit some fascinating and beautiful areas in the Western Australia state. At that time of year, the early autumn weather will be balmy and pleasant.
I look forward to welcoming you to Perth.

Professor Daniele MarchioniProfessor in OtolaryngologyDirector of the Specialty School in Otorhinolaryngology of the University of VeronaDirector of Operative Unit of Otolaryngology of VeronaPresident and Director of the Speech Therapy Degree of the University of VeronaItaly
Professor Daniele Marchioni graduated in Otolaryngology at the University of Modena (Italy) and specialises in microscopic and exclusive endoscopic surgery in the areas of the skull base and ear; and is also responsible for cancer surgery of the head and neck.
He has performed more than 6,000 surgical operations, in particular high complexity procedures performed in teams for the treatment of skull base pathology, middle ear endoscopic surgery and acoustic neuromas, endoscopic treatments for diseases of the anterior skull base with extra and intracranial extension, and complex surgical treatments for cancer of the head and neck cancers.
He is a founding member of ‘IWGEES (International Working Group for Endoscopic Ear Surgery) and collaborates with leading international hospital and university structures.
Professor Marchioni trained at Ospedaliero-University of Modena, where he developed the surgical anatomy and physiology concepts underpinning existing approaches to exclusive transcanalar middle and inner ear endoscopy. These concepts have been published in the prestigious journal of otology and these studies have initiated numerous practical courses for the teaching of endoscopic technique around the world.
Thanks to several years of study and numerous anatomical and dissector studies performed at numerous foreign prestigious universities, Professor Marchioni with Professor Presutti has encoded the transpromontoriale minimally invasive approach for the treatment of acoustic neuromas localized at the level of the internal auditory canal and the endoscopic transcanalar approach to lateral skull base.
Professor Marchioni codified the first totally endoscopic approach for the treatment of acoustic neuromas and for tumours of the facial nerve. He performed the first cochlear implant for the treatment of endoscopic assisted profound hearing loss in middle ear malformation syndromes, codifying the way of endoscopic suprameatale.
He published the first international book on the endoscopic treatment of ear disease and acoustic neuromas and lateral skull base.
Professor Marchioni is a teacher and faculty at several international centers and holds workshops in many countries (USA, Brazil, Japan, Scotland, Singapore, India, UAE, Australia, Turkey and many others) to spread the endoscopic technique in ear surgery and the lateral skull base.

Shopping
Perth City offers a whirlwind of shopping experiences, open seven days of the week. From unique designer goods to major department stores the city’s rich mix of retail outlets encompasses the latest in fashion, style and technology. The Murray and Hay Street Malls are particularly popular as pedestrian only streets where you’ll discover a treasure trove of fashion, jewellery and accessories.
The city’s upmarket West End is where international fashion houses and labels have made their home in Perth. On the beautiful heritage streetscape of King Street follow the Fashion Walk of Fame and visit some of the same brand stores found on Rodeo Drive and the Champs-Élysées. Further down towards Wellington Street, independent boutiques and fashion houses offer unique items of clothing.
Wesley Quarter is a fabulous new addition to the chic West End, tucked in behind the gothic style Wesley Church, built in the mid 1800’s. The glamorous shopping precinct is a superb example of old meets new. Your West End wardrobe can include designer luggage, shoes, handbags, jewellery and, of course, designer clothing.
Canning Vale hosts Western Australia’s largest undercover market on Sundays, with room for more than 1,000 stalls selling a vast variety of new and second-hand goods changing hands including furniture, clothing, fashion accessories, books, war memorabilia, compact discs, toys and gifts. A selection of food stalls offers everything from hot dogs to fairy floss. A minimal entry fee is charged.

Fremantle
Just 30 minutes south of Perth, the bustling, dynamic port city of Fremantle has long been renowned for its rich history, charm and modern culture. Fremantle’s streets buzz with the song of buskers, the sidewalks fill with a wild collection of art and music floats out from trendy cafés and bars. It’s considered one of the easiest cities in the world to explore by foot or bike.
With its rich heritage, Fremantle is definitely the place for a genuine historical experience. You won’t want to pass up a tour of the Fremantle Prison, Roundhouse and Maritime Museum, and, if that’s not quite enough for one day, you might also like to visit the Shipwreck Museum and Army Museum of Western Australia.
