MOTION: To accept Chicago Minutes as noted – Maybee , 2nd Duelllo APPROVED: 16-0-1-3-20 Approved minutes available (WWW LINK ACTION – Al Veeck to post)

5) Chair’s Remarks (15 min.)

a) “Linked In” Polling – Mack Barnhart and Vijay coordination – Air Filtration Systems • One of many items in blog discusses ASHRAE 52.2 problems • Viewed as good way to communicate with the industry • Bob to provide to Vijay and Mack, a list of actions being put in place to

address ASAP. b) Three goal committee objective review

• Republication in 2012 • Planned addenda focus through 2017/narrow issues • Long range planning (research initiatives – 5 year plan)

c) SPLS Roster recommendations for 2012 – current voting status was reviewed per initial roll call. More detail under “New Business” below.

6) Old Business / Committee Reports (20 minutes):

a) Reconfirm email voting since Chicago meeting (Chair not voting on both) • MERV Table Changes 17-1-1-0-20 • OPC Changes 19-1-1-0-20

b) Liquid Paint Overspray reference in Federal register • ACTION - Chair has not done. Will be done by next meeting

c) Initial Efficiency Stamp issue – NAFA inquired about the use of a disclaiming stamp to address the misuse of “Initial MERV Efficiency” – Burkhead reported that he solicited input from the committee by email and sent a response back to NAFA – point was that we do see it as a problem and that it is broader than this one issue. See section b under “New Business” for action plans and resolution • NAFA inquiry and our Response – (ATTACHMENT 3)

d) Publication Public Review – KEY focus now! – Task Group needed?? • Need team to write this:

• Zied, Maybe, Gemma, Justice, Campion, Brodsky • Need to review Title Purpose and Scope

e) Errata summary – Phil Winters (ATTACHMENT 4) • Section 4.2.4 “the perforated diffusion plate…orifice.”

• Phil to change nomenclature to what it says in the drawing above. 7) Task Group Reports and Discussions (1 hour)

a) TG for MERV table changes – finished and voted on (Russ Baldinger) b) TG for OPC particle counter specifications – finished and voted on (Jim Handley)



c) TG for Variation control (newly set up at the last meeting in Chicago) – Christopher Campion reported on his efforts – his initial summation is attached (ATTACHMENT 5) – his comments:

• Volunteers have been solicited and polled for input – written responses from Monroe Britt and Paolo Tronville – summarized below:

• Much “bigger beast” than first thought • Concrete dates by Tuesday to set up schedule • 2 Phases –

Elucidation phase • Collective knowledge of variability

Collection Phase - RTAR process to collect data we need • ACTION – Chris to report back to 52.2 on regular basis between main

meetings • Monroe’s Note’s (ATTACHMENT 6)

Make sure TG addresses use of dew point ASHRAE Dust is wrong – does not meet all applications, actually few Need TC 2.4 Research on dust (Owen) run its course No definition of ASHRAE dust only loading dust (defined in ISO

5957 ref) ID of selector

• Paolo’s Note’s (ATTACHMENT 7) We need to keep the customer in mind, but it is not clear what the

customer wants and who they are. • ACTION - Need to be an application interpretation general consensus in

the room TC 2.4 should do this. • Barney comment– Tack MERV out of the standard and have composite curve

as true data product. • Agreed to move forward with the three approved changes for the next

addendum publication – ACTION - Burkhead to submit now. 1. The MERV Table changes 2. The OPC specification changes 3. The RH range refinement

d) TG for Humidity range changes – finished and voted on (Monroe Britt) but more

discussion requested • Peart – wants more evidence on humidity impact • Vatine – felt that lab to lab variability is exasperated by humidly • Thornburg – we (Camfil-Farr) are cutting lower end out now (30-50) helping

eliminate bounce • Burkhead – Some confusion , this is main duct RH. • Driss – 2 issues – One; RH to reduce variability, and two; effects lower

measurements of E3 • Britt – not seen data and wants more evidence • Go to public review and structure round robin to address these issues.



• MOTION: Peart – Change the RH Main Air Flow range to 50 +- 10 in 4.2.3 Peart, 2nd Maybe • Discussion/Opinions

a. Difficult to keep lab above 40% due to recirculation b. Evidence of lab to lab variation due to RH variability is lacking c. Primary antidotal data shows bounce is primary issue in E3 d. Current range 42.5% +/- 22.5%. Change narrows it up. e. Will this make testing more costly if labs need to add more

equipment to comply? f. Focus on RH entering test duct and where the particles are

generated g. Needs to be near the filter (opposing view) h. What was written by Monroe was testing at Main Air Flow and

particle generator flow all 50% +/- 10% • Friendly Amendment (Peart) – 45+_10 RH at Main Air Flow in 4.2.3 • APPROVED: 14-0-3-3-20

e) TG for Air Density calculation (Monroe Britt)

• No progress to date but ready for review. Will not be included in 2012 revision f) TG for IPA vapor conditioning (Monroe Britt) Mike Corbat – Round Robin status:

• ISO TC 142 WG9 test plan (ATTACHMENT 8)

• Round Robin due at ISO Plenary Meeting in Zurich – September 2012

• There are safety concerns expressed by several members. 8) New Business (75 min)

a) Vijay - input on the linked in Poll findings • His summary of feedback (ATTACHMENT 9) • ACTION - VJ to post back on Linked in giving our update and plan. • User community input

a. Reporting – i. PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 have an informational appendix and user

guide. ii. ISO work is showing the E1, E2 and E3 are coming very close to

lining up b. Measurements & Requirements

i. The standard is required that they be sealed in a duct c. Revisions

i. Opportunity for education ii. Want to see curve

b) Dave Matier Video on cycling and shedding in a test rig. – “critical issue”. Should

this be in the standard or should this be optional, or in a handbook? • ACTION – Bob to request this should be presented to TC 2.4 • ACTION – Bob to put on items to be addressed list.



c) Burkhead - Resolution of “partial test” scenarios – including “IE only” issue from

NAFA • ACTION – Barney to write Interpretation Request, can data taken off a

report, response will then become part of the standard. • ACTION – ask TC 2.4 for instructional use of 52.2 data for guide book.

d) Flat Sheet Testing and conditioning options (Tad’s report – ATTACHMENT 10) • Appendix J conditioning can be performed in flat sheet scenario!

e) Owen - Lab Accreditation on reports • Per earlier discussions, this will be referred to TC 2.4 for report labeling and

interpretation f) Britt – Working list of action items

• Same list as discussed earlier, but suggest test group really look at separating MERV out of 52.2 for 52.3 (just curve) similar to ISO procedures • Add to list for minutes

g) ISO 1680 Thornburg • - 1 classification has been approved as a work item and committee draft (3 yr)

0.3-10 um efficiency and convert to PM1, PM2.5 and PM10 with full test. • - 2 Actual Test Method - out for approval as a new work item vote. If so will start

3 yr clock. Initial draft has been completed (much like 52.2) • - 4 Actual Conditioning test method - out for approval as a new work item vote.

If so will start 3 year clock. • - 3 gravimetric method - has not yet started

h) Voting membership review update (ATTACHMENT 11) • Marianne Lane has given notice of resignation. • NAFA will be corporate member of committee (our first) • Chairs recommendation to include these changes and others • ACTION - Even though it is not required, Bob to provide voting members

with the Chair’s recommendation prior to submittal. If meaningful negative feedback, he will reconsider.
