All Saints Church News

Dear Friends,

Jesus Christ – yesterday, today & tomorrow - caterpillar, chrysalis & butterfly.

There was once a caterpillar who was feeling a little overwhelmed. He was long

and brown and had little sticky hairs coming out of his body on all sides. He found it

difficult to move. Life was quite dangerous, especially when birds came and tried to

eat him. They tried to destroy him and prevent him living and growing into what he

was meant to be. Other creatures tried to crush him because they thought he might

be poisonous.

One day he knew it was time to go to a special place, he climbed a tree and he

wove a kind of case around himself and appeared to hibernate. He hung there for

quite some time. He was even uglier than before but at least the birds seemed to

ignore him. Then after a while he broke out of his case and developed into a

beautiful butterfly. So beautiful that no one recognised him. Now he would move

around and pollinate flowers and enable other life to reproduce, grow and develop.

The Easter story of resurrection is not an easy one to understand but sometimes

theology needs to be put to one side and natures simple examples used. The Easter

Story is one of life, death and resurrection but more important than the

chronological events, is the struggle. Just as the caterpillar would not have become

the butterfly without struggling out of, and time spent in, the unpleasant crystallise

stage - Jesus Christ would not have been able to atone for our sins had he not

gone through the pain, torture and anguish of the cross. His rebirth, just as that of

the butterfly, was miraculous but also key to the spiritual development of the human

race.

There are of course many metaphorical holes one could pick in this analogy, but just

pause and consider your own “yesterday, today & tomorrow”. Can you go through,

or are you already going through a kind of resurrection? We often talk about a

change of life style, changing the pace we live at, downsizing – all those things that

we try and do to find what is missing in our lives – things which might give us better

quality time with those we love. Spend some quality time with God during March

and then look in the mirror and see how your appearance has changed.

Happy Easter!
