PRESIDENT'S CORNERGreetings Fellow Shop Owners and Associates!

Happy Car Care Awareness month! Is your shop doing anything in April to promote automotive education? Many shops provide great educational opportunities for their customers and community to be more car care conscious. For example, I know of a repair shop that has a three hour class for teens and one for single ladies to teach the basics from where's the oil dip stick to how to change a tire. Many shops use a newsletter which is another great way to educate your customers and to keep them coming back to you. It's very important for the shop owner to personally communicate with the customer. We all should take time to answer their questions. And, take it a step farther; show them something that they may not know about their car. This personal touch will help strengthen your relationship, and keep them loyal to your shop.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the brown bag session last month. We had a great turn out and great discussions from our loyal members. I know I was challenged, as well as, motivated to try some new ideas. See some of the questions asked and a few of the group answers in the article later in this issue.

Please help me welcome our newest Associates: Hubert Glass Oil, Leah Williams; and Hunter Engineering Co., Brent Livers. They are eager to be an active support to our organization.

RO Writer will be sponsoring our April meeting. Tere Hardin, RO Writer's Senior Manager of Sales will be our special speaker. His expertise is in “Best Practices” for auto repair shops. We will all learn more about better utilizing and motivating our employees. You will see a presentation of the new R. O. Touch tool. I look forward to see each of you at our April 14th meeting.

Have ideas for the association? –Come to the ASA Houston Chapter Board Meeting! The meetings are open and we would love to have you!

March 2014ASA Houston - Shop Talk

Page 4

April 2015

April is National Car Care Month and offers an opportunity for great shops to educate their customers about the vital importance of good

maintenance with the help of an impartial and creditable third party.

The Car Care Council is a recognized national organization that fosters proper maintenance and care for cars. Their Car Care Aware program is a year round effort to promote good care. Their website offers many helpful tools for the consumer and shop to track, understand and promote maintenance.

Each motorist can set up their car, or cars, on a reminder system that will send emails or text messages when a periodic maintenance is due. It is tailored to specific vehicles and models. The user enters their vehicle information and expected annual driving and the program takes care of the rest of it.

The Car Care Council also offers a comprehensive car care guide of more than 60 pages with recommendations for routine care and the reason each is important. This can be downloaded for free by the motorist or shop. It is available in both English and Spanish. The guide takes the motorist through all the areas of maintenance with pictures and diagrams explaining each.

The Car Care Guide can be ordered from the Car Care Council in quantities of 20 for about one buck per copy. They would make a great promotional give away for all new customers or those you want to educate on maintenance. You can also have them custom printed with your company information for just a bit more money but the minimum order for that is 2500.

The Council also post regular articles on topic helpful to

both the motorist and shop. Articles such as, “Don't let your car break your heart and leave you stranded” can motivate a customer to perform preventative care that might otherwise be ignored, or worse, looked upon as just another sales gimmick by the shop. They also publish regular car care tips to help the car owner understand why things are important. Topics such as wipers, gas mileage, preparing for summer or winter driving and many more covered.

The Car Care Council does two big drives each year. October in Fall Car Care Month and April is National Car Care Month. They spend a lot of money promoting these events and getting the word out about car care. As shop owners it could benefit us and our customers to piggy back on that effort.

Materials are available from the website to help you promote a car care event in your shop or to take advantage of the promotion they are already doing. The Car Care Council will help publicize your event if you decide to have one of your own. Currently there are 11 events in Texas listed on the website for April.

Another benefit of the program is that your shop can be listed on the “Shop Finder” located on the website.

It is not often we get to enjoy the efforts of someone else's work but this is a perfect opportunity to do just that.

Change – Is there anything more mysterious? Is there anything more complex? Is there anything more challenging? Is there anything more trying?

Is there anything with equal push back? So many of us fervently desire what we don't possess:

If only I were older.CIf only I were healthy.CIf only I were in college.CIf only my staff did what I wanted them to do.CIf only I made more money.CIf only I could build a new facility.CIf only I could find someone buy my shop.CIf only I had 50K to invest in my business.CIf only my son or daughter would come to work on Ctime.

If only the new generation had the work ethic I have.CIf only my customers were willing to maintain their Ccars.

If only I could have 77 more cars per month. CThe list is as endless as the solar system. There is no

end in sight.

So how do we make all these “if only” items come true? We fear change, the unknown and the possibility of failure or disappointment. Push back causes our knees to buckle and we retreat to the same old way of doing things. Perhaps our frequent yearning for something different often clashes with our fear of change. Simply stated, “We can't experience the new without going through some type of change.”

What is the fuel to fire up our change mechanism? What would make us stretch to make the change? What passion would drive us so change does happen? Perhaps one little three letter word! I bet you guessed it!

“WHY” – The Driving Factor of Change

So what is so magical about the word “why”? It puts your emotions in gear, which drives your actions that create change. If you are unable to define your WHY, then nothing will make the change come true.

Find your WHY and watch change happen.

TIMES OF CHANGE AND WHY by Gary GunnTurn Around Tour

Our meeting for March was our once a year special, ASA's Brown Bag. It was

stimulating with numerous engaging questions and a tossing of great ideas. Here is a sample of some of the questions and ideas posed by our shop owner members and loyal associates:

Do you apply diagnostic to the repair or do you have diagnostic and repair separated?

Majority have separateCWhen allowing diagnostic to Ccount towards repairs you are selling your business and your team short. You take responsibility for the repair unlike automotive parts stores.

How do you handle Preventive Maintenance Inspection and how do you motivate/incentivize your technicians?

Every car, every timeCIf they are not willing perform Cthem on their own, they have no business being part of your team.

How do you prepare your team and customers to be open on Saturdays?

Have your technicians on Crotating schedules so they don't burn out. Majority of technicians do not mind working the extra day every couple weeks.

Just open and tell peopleCHow do you handle financing for your customers? What programs seem to work best?

Money to Go' works for some Cbusinesses

Majority of programs do not Cwork, be wary and do your

homework. Encourage your customer to do their homework too before signing.

Do you pay your technicians to attend training classes?

Majority will pay for Ctransportation, accommodations, and the course itself; however, not for their time.

What training requirements do you require?

Majority of shops do not have Ctraining requirements

Some require technicians to Ccomplete a certain number of training hours per year.

What tools should the garage owner supply?

FAST FIX FROM IDENTIFIX AND DIRECT HITVEHICLE: 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe GLS 2.4L, L4, MFI, DOHC, VIN B, Eng Version Theta II

MILEAGE: 118,244

CUSTOMER CONCERN: The check engine light is on with an Intake Manifold Runner Performance (Bank1) code P200A.

TESTS:

1. Check the resistance of the Variable Charge Motion Actuator (VCMA) motor from terminal 4 to terminal 5. The specification is 3.4 to 4.4Ω at 68 degrees fahrenheit.

2. With the key on, actuate the VCMA motor with a compatible scan tool and confirm the change of VCMA feedback sensor signal and the sound of operation. The specification is about 0.84 volts open and about 4.16 volts closed.

3. If your scan tool will not operate the VCMA motor, backprobe and monitor the VCMA position sensor signal at terminal 2 Black/Orange wire with the key on and apply battery voltage to the motor at terminal 5 Orange wire. Pulse a ground at terminal 4 Pink wire and the position sensor signal voltage should change. Then reverse and apply battery voltage at terminal 4 and pulse a ground at terminal 5 to move it the other way. The specification is about 0.84 volts open and about 4.16 volts closed. The VCMA motor is duty-cycled by the Engine Control Module (ECM) at 50% duty.

4. If the motor is not moving, remove it and verify that the shaft will rotate by hand or if it is stuck in the intake. If it will rotate by hand verify that the motor will operate when not attached to the shaft and if it won't, it has likely failed.

POTENTIAL CAUSES: Upper Intake Manifold Variable Charge Motion Actuator (VCMA)

CONFIRMED FIX: Replaced Variable Charge Motion Actuator (VCMA): Replaced the VCMA and cleaned the intake.

TECH TIPS:

The Variable Charge Motion Actuator (VCMA) adjusts the runner valve to one of two positions, open or closed. The VCMA system tumbles air flow entering into combustion chamber of each cylinder by closing the VCMA valve in cold start conditions. This valve doesn't have mechanical return spring. If the PCM detects that the opened or closed stop position is out of the specified value, it sets P200A.

Mercedes-Benz owns all the tools in Ctheir shops which in turn makes it much more difficult for technicians to leave.

How do you assign oil changes at your shop? Do you rotate them among all your technicians or assign them just to general service personnel?

Assign to general service personnelCAssign to a mechanic. Oil changes are an Copportunity to look under the vehicle and see what else the vehicle may need.

The goal for our monthly meetings is to provide informative and educational speakers and discussions to help our members with the latest technology and practices in meeting their customers' needs. Join us at our next meeting, April 14th, 6:30 at Fratelli's Ristorante.

Hunter's history of innovation began in 1936 when Lee Hunter invented the world's first rapid battery charger. Immediately after WW-II, more groundbreaking inventions followed including the Tune-In on-car

balancer and famous Lite-A-Line alignment system which remained industry standards for decades. In 1969, Hunter introduced the F70 Compute-A-Line, the first successful computerized dynamic wheel aligner. Hunter expanded his technological lead with the watershed introduction of the A111 in 1982, which introduced 4-wheel alignment, graphical adjustment displays and the first electronic database of OE specifications.

Today Hunter alignment systems are used in the R&D and production facilities of virtually every vehicle manufacturer worldwide. Hunter innovation goes well beyond wheel alignment. In 1997 Hunter revolutionized wheel vibration control with the GSP9700 Vibration Control System—a wheel balancer featuring a computer-simulated road test to isolate non-balance-related wheel vibration. For over a decade the GSP9700 has helped customers across around the world eliminate vibration and cancel common complaints.

Lee Hunter's commitment to innovation and shop productivity continues today. Hunter's team of research and development engineers remain focused on the undercar service category to design the most innovative and highest-quality undercar equipment. More than 600 US field representatives and a strong group of domestic and overseas distributors make Hunter Engineering the largest undercar equipment supplier in the world. Everyday this global team follows the principles established by Lee Hunter more than 70 years ago when he first envisioned better, faster ways to service vehicles - ways that the experts said “couldn't be done.”
