• Aravind Eye Hospital was founded in 1976, by Dr. G. Venkataswamy

• Eleven bed hospital manned by 4 medical officers

• Today, it is one of the largest facilities in the world for eye care.

Genesis• 45 Million blinds worldwide• 12 Million blinds in India• 95% are due to cataract related blindness• World’s largest Blind population is in India• 80% of the blindness is easily curable and

• There are now 5 Arvind eye hospitals in south India

• They are all self sustaining and together they serve over 1.4 million patients each year

• At Arvind every paitent who pays covers cost for those who can not.

• Because of their high numbers revenue from paying patients covers free services and also results in surplus.

• Community outreach programmes which take eye care service to the doorstep of the community

• Screening camps, and IT enabled Vision Centres in rural areas

• Patients requiring surgery are brought to the Hospital

• Patients receive food, lodging, treatment and return transport free of charge

Making Eye care affordable through Product innovation

• Aurolab was established in 1992 to address high cost of opthalmic supplies

• Price of lense (IOL) brought down from $100 to $2 making the surgery affordable

• Today Aurolab exports their products to 120 countries ; 7% market share

• 10 million people see the world through Aurolab’s lenses
