Joseph Palermo2005 ARTV Awards ‘Artist of the Year’

Born on the south side of Pittsburgh during World War II, the son of John Palermo, Gandi Dancer for the Pennsylvania and Lake Erie Railroad, and Perrina Palermo, Opera Singer and housewife, Joseph Palermo enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1958. He subsequently lived in New York and abroad. In the sense of adventure, Palermo is an artist who has been everywhere and done most everything. An undefeated amateur boxer in the Marine Corps, he was honorably discharged out of the service in Spain and spent several months apprenticed as an assistant to Joan Miro.

Back in the U.S. he dealt blackjack for a year in Las Vegas, managed a doo-wop vocal group called the Delcos, and was a professional jazz musician. Rejoining the military, he attended the Ecole des Beaux Arts while serving as an air traffic controller in Paris for three years. He then served a tour in Vietnam and was wounded in action as a member of the 19th Air Commandos.

After leaving the military, he traveled to Africa as a mercenary on a life-saving mission. He then spent ten years living in Spain as a highly respected expatriate artist. Finally he cast his fate in Las Vegas again, soon serving as President and Executive Director of the new Las Vegas Art Museum. In 2003, he co-founded the Henderson Art Association.

Through all this life-flux, Palermo has remained an artist first and foremost, a painter and a sculptor. As an artist, his work has been through many changes, as has his colorful life. Master of many styles, he has floated freely among them, adopting and discarding them in an experimental journey that has now brought him to the innovative frontier of American art.

My Own Mother Teresa In Memory of Teri Roberts

1928 - 2000

My Mom, Teri Roberts, was very crafty and multi-talented. She was a wonderful cook, clothing designer, dancer, English-style horseback rider, writer, and a political campaign activist. She excelled in bookkeeping, too, and headed the tax receiver’s office of Suffolk County, New York!

I was reared using the both sides of my brain, then encouraged to follow my dreams!

Thank you, Mom. You are my inspiration.

“What the World Needs Now” is ArtNow more than ever it is time for the arts to flourish. During the chaos of our 21st century world, it’s vital to keep the arts alive and thriving and it’s up to all of us to do it. For the 2007 ARTV Awards, we welcome fine artists from across the USA, as well as from Europe, Japan, and South America ... and recognize their exceptional talents in the Top 10 categories including oils, acrylics, watercolor, sculpture, mixed media, drawing, new movement/media, and public art installation. There also will be a special award given to the “Artist of the Year.” As the Creator and Executive Producer of the ARTV International Fine Art Awards, I am pleased to be producing our all original, one-time-only production of the 2007 ARTV Awards. Our goal is to create a three-dimen-sional show for TV and a memorable cultural experience for our live event audience that will spotlight these fine artists like never before. The Awards Ceremony also will be taped for television in HD for future broadcast.

I’ve been a long time champion and advocate of the arts. In Las Vegas, I am a major contributor to UNLV’s Fine Art Gallery, and The Las Vegas Art Museum and the NAA. As an international activist and educator, I created art films from Europe to China. My films include documentaries with the BBC and TVUK, including the Anthony Quinn documentary, “Reflections in the Eye, The Final Word” and “Living Famously” in Europe. The 2005 “Premiere ARTV Fine Art Awards” show was hosted by Cheech Marin and aired on NBC/BRAVO! television in March 2007. Distributed around the globe, it is the first fine art awards show ever broadcast to the world. ARTV’s innovative awards show is for and about the Artists. We think it’s about time for fine artists to be recognized similarly to performance artists in the music, televison, and cinema. We welcome you to the 2007 ARTV Fine Art Awards and thank you for your support of fine art and artists. We promise you a memorable evening of wonderful art, live entertainment, and many surprises.

“Words fall short of explaining this rare

technique. One must see the art, feel it, and touch

it in order to truly experience the magic.”

Born and raised in a small town near Frankfort, Germany, Carmen’s career as a Transitional Abstract Artist was influenced by her father, who encouraged her to draw when she was a teen-ager. She refined her craft with formal training at Pasadena City College in California, and re-cently relocated with her son, Amir, to Summerlin in Las Vegas. Carmen’s unique compositions of life, color and art have made their way into the private collections of individuals and businesses from North America to the British West Indies. Her art “takes one on an imaginary journey,” she says, “and no two journeys are alike.” She descibes her art as a “variety of color transitions with each transition represent-ing the essence of color and energy.” Carmen says her vision is to share her art with the global community so that people everywhere can enjoy the same happiness and harmony that she feels from the creation to completion of her heartfelt work.

For more than 25 years, the African American Museum has stood as a cul-tural beacon in Dallas and the Southwestern United States. The Museum was founded in 1974 as a part of Bishop College Library. Since 1979, it has been a private non-profit institution under the auspices of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for African American Art. The Foundation’s board consists of 60 citizens from Texas who represent business, cultural, philanthropic, edu-cation, religious and civic constituencies.

In 1985 Dallas voters approved a $1.2 million city bond issue providing for the construction of a $6.5 million new home for the Museum in Fair Park, a major cultural and entertainment center near the center of the city.

The African American Museum is the only museum in the Southwest-ern United States devoted to the preservation and display of African American artistic, cultural and his-torical materials. It also has one of the largest African American folk art collections in the United States. The Museum incorporates a wide variety of visual art forms and historical documents that portray the African Ameri-can experience in the United States, Southwest, and Dallas.

The African American Museum is dedicated to the research, identification, selection, acquisition, presentation and preservation of visual art forms and historical documents that relate to the life and culture of the African Ameri-can community. The collections of the Museum combined with its related activities serve to assist all people to understand and appreciate the Afri-can American experience. The Museum’s permanent collections include African art; African American fine art; magazine, historical, political and community archives.

The main objective of the Museum is the presentation of meaningful ex-periences for children and adults who would not ordinarily visit a museum. The rich heritage of black art and history is housed in four vaulted galleries, augmented by a research library. Living African American culture is expe-rienced through entertaining and educational programs presented in the theater, studio arts area and classrooms.

The African American Museum is located in historic Fair Park in Dallas, Texas, at the Grand Avenue entrance to the park.

The Premiere ARTVAwards

The Premiere ARTV AWARDS event was held on October 28 & 29th, 2005, in the vibrant city of Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Resort. It was the first ever, red carpet, nationally visible and recognized, visual arts event in America. Host Cheech Marin, famed comic and television actor, gave the show the entertain-ing element that kept the audience totally involved.

The event was an active, artistic ‘show,’ with heavy multi-media presentation, similar to other national events in the recording and movie/TV industries, with live performances, multi-media screens with video presentations showcasing the artists and their works, and recognition of the sponsors backed with musical support and celebrity presenters.

The presentation was in ‘Golden Globe Awards’ style, with live music, song, and dance performances on stage and video screens to enliven the proceedings. There were celebrity presenters of the awards, celeb-rity interviews, music and art sequences, with a Red Carpet like no other!

Artist nominations in various categories were previously announced at a pre-awards press party in New York City on March 4, 2005, and continued each month until June 2005, culminating at the West Coast press party and preview at the Museum of TV and Radio in Beverly Hills, California. Our National Campaign had begun. Further Publicity and advertising in specific art industry magazines brought the awards event to the attention of the North American art world.

MEDIA UNDERGROUND, an award-winning TV/Film Production company, applied their excellent technical production skills to the event with fixed and roaming cameras, special sound capture, and state-of-the-art digital video equipment. ARTV provided event plan-

ning, including fly-ins, reservations, hotel preparation, showroom preparation, including the showroom and celebrity lounge, and planning and production of other events supporting the 2005 ARTV Awards.

The RED CARPET preceding the awards event was a glittering, star-studded affair with a legion of sleek limousines and lots of excitement and surprises. The Sin City Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence made a splashy entrance. VIP host Brandi Williams of TV’s “Ultimate Poker Challenge” greeted celebrities including ARTV Awards host and movie legend Cheech Marin; Alex Quinn, actor and son of actor-artist Anthony Quinn, and Kathleen Quinn, his widow. Glass artist Michael

Art lovers and fine artists from across the nation were in attendance for this historic awards event. Awards nomi-nees came from New York, Texas, California, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Louisiana hoping to win top honors and take home a beautiful carved glass “Muse” statuette created for the ARTV Awards by Michael Ray.

MICHELE BALANMichele Balan is our ARTV Awards host, promising to delight guests with her unique brand of hilarious comedy. One of four finalists on NBC’s 2006 “Last Comic Standing,” she was voted one of the “Top 10 Comics” by Backstage Magazine in 2004. Michele Balan is a brash, New York stand-up comedian who has performed on Comedy Central as well as in top comedy clubs, theatres, festivals and on cruises all over the country. Often told she was naturally funny, the Brooklyn native left a high-paying executive position at a computer company to pursue comedy – and she has been performing ever since.

Michele got her start as a “female female-impersonator,” doing lip sync impressions of Bette Midler. Now people tell her she is like a “Female George Burns with many one-liners.” Michele’s career has taken her from The Improv in Los Angeles to Caroline’s on Broadway in New York City, and from the Montreal “Just For Laughs Festival” to the “Dinah Shore Women’s Weekend.”

Michele has shared the stage with Kathy Najimy, Jennifer Holiday, Taylor Dayne, Harvey Fierstein, Bruce Vilanch and Nell Carter. In 1999 she recorded a CD at The Improv in Los Angeles that features Nell Carter singing a song parody that Michele wrote.Michele recently recorded the critically acclaimed DVD entitled “LIVE, Just Barely” at the famed Joe’s Pub, home to the public theatre and performers such as Joan Rivers, Eartha Kitt and Leslie Gore, for whom she just wrote a comedy segment.

Flery BurseyFlery Bursey wrote his first song, “The Moon is Shining Tonight,” on the Hutchins Jr. high school auditorium piano in the summer of 1963. That set him on a path that would earn him the titles of writer, arranger, producer, conductor, recording artist, author, composer, inventor, nationalist, vocalist, playwright, church organist and gospel minister. And like the kids use to say “he’s all that and a bag of chips.” Flery’s talents have touched the lives of artists such as Marvin Gaye, Mary Wells, Harvey Fuqua, Barry White, and L.J. Reynolds just to name a few. Through the 1960s, the ‘70s, the ‘80s, the ‘90s and into the new millennium, Flery stays ahead of the current trends.

“No one has to tell me if I have a hit,” Flery says. “I’m from the old school and when we write a song, we have to know. That’s what makes us viable as producers.”

Flery is inspired by the music of Bach, Berstine, and Bacharach, and says as one of the “B’s,” he’s following in their footsteps. Like Cole Porter, Flery is also an accomplished lyricist, writing thought provoking lyrics to most of his 100-plus songs. Flery says he loves the “message song” and believes that the world can be changed with love. Flery’s music has been played by orchestras in New York, Detroit, Houston, Los Angles, and most recently at the Orleans showroom in Las Vegas, where he currently resides.

A multi-instrumentalist playing the keyboards, horns, and strings, he has also been one of the vocalists with Lou Ragland’s world famous “Ink Spots” for the past seven years. Where does he get the energy? Who knows. We just know we can look for the name of Flery Bursey to be popping up all over the place for many years to come.

Mission StatementThe Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas Fine Art Program enables our youth to develop their creativity and cultural awareness through knowledge and appreciation of the visual arts, crafts, performing arts and creative writing. Boys & Girls Clubs year-round fine arts program encourages artistic expression through classes, special events and fine art exhibitions. In an era of public education budgetary challenges, the priority for Arts education and appreciation continues to diminish. There is little doubt that young people exposed to the Arts exhibit a higher degree of creative expression and appreciation for the subject matter. In addition, encouraging children to express themselves through the Arts has proven to have psychological and therapeutic benefits as well. Your support will enable us to develop our arts program and reach and impact more of the 21,000 young people we currently serve. For Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas Fine Art Program sponsorship and volunteer information, please contact Heather Estus at (702) 367-2582, ext 223

FRANKI LOVE“All I want to do with music is give it to others ... share my heart and soul,” says Franki Love.

Named the “Female Singer/Songwriter of the Year” at the L.A. Music Awards 2004, Franki’s song, “Shadow” won the “Adult Contemporary Single of the Year” award from the L.A. Music Awards in 2005. The ASCAP, a membership as-sociation of more than 300,000 U.S. composers, songwrit-ers, lyricists, and music publishers, presented Franki with its “Popular Award” 2004-2007.

“Franki Love,” her soulful debut album, is now out and can be purchased at www.FrankiLove.com.

Franki has composed mu-sic for television and film in-cluding a recent project for Tony Kaye, director of “American History X.” A documentary based on Franki and her music “The Franki Love Story” is in development.

Franki, who grew up in New York, but now calls Los Angeles home,

is a classically trained pianist who has been playing the piano since the age of five.

“Never in a million years would I have thought that I would be a singer, Franki says. But after I wrote my first song, there was no turning back. I knew I had found my purpose.”

“It made me realize that I need to share my music with the world. What I love most is writing songs and per-forming them live,” Franki says. To me, there’s nothing better than creating something solely from your heart and sharing that with others.”

Dean RubinoSince his childhood, Dean Rubino has had two passions: art and sports. Over the last decade, he has worked on incorporating both as one. He grabs the viewers by focusing on the action and movement of an athlete. Dean’s use of color and concept has shown unique style, reflecting the energy and excitement on canvas.

At the age of 17, Dean received two honored grants attending SUNY Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. Over the two years, he learned how to sketch the human figure which he uses today.

He moved to Las Vegas and received his degree in Fine Art. It was out west that Dean developed his unique style of painting sports athletes in an impressionistic style. His bright colors of abstract

acrylics are related to Leroy Neiman’s sports paintings that have been seen over the last five decades.

As far back as he could remember he always wanted to become a sports artist. Painting sports figures and capturing great moments on canvas keeps him connected to his favorite teams and athletes of past and present generations. Now at 31, this inspiring artist is on the path to fulfilling his dream.

“There’s nothing more exciting in life than doing what you love.”

MAYNARDNominated in ARTV’s Mixed Media category, artist Lincoln Maynard has spent most of his life amidst the neon of Las Vegas and the west-ern deserts. This environment has molded a perspective that pulls the scale and spectrum of his surround-ings into his current contemporary series of acrylic and mixed media abstracts. Architectural in scope, his work has evolved through ongoing explorations with various mediums and ecologically conscious methods, hence, creating a diverse catalogue of works. His decades spent in theatrical design built an appreciation for cre-ating on an oversized scale while concentrating on the reflection of every detail. His recent series of paintings are environmental designs titled “Rhythms of the Earth.” Other works include textural studies in line, form, and light. Taken as a series or individually, each piece mirrors the whole or a focused part of the objects, atmospheres, architecture, people, and the life that surrounds him.Lincoln Maynard’s work is acquisitioned by both private and corporate collectors. His artwork is continuously on exhibit in various venues.

Sergey was born in St. Petersburg, Russia on January 24, 1969. His creative and artistic talents were recognized early. He was

encouraged to attend art school and began studying art by the age of eight. During that time, Sergey discovered his absolute

love of art. After completing his first few years of school, Sergey knew he wanted to attend one of the most

prestigious art schools in Europe, the “Serovo Art Institute.”

He studied all of the classic forms of art, including European art history, photography, printing processes, sculpture, restoration

methods, and painting everything from still life to portraits.

Sergey’s images reflect his passion for French Impressionism and his love of color. Imagination, fueled by a lifetime of wanderlust,

is the key to his lively landscapes. Energy flows from his paintings with a gentle yet powerful force that is captivated for a lifetime.

His work is exhibited extensively in the United States, several

European galleries, Australia, and in his home country of Russia in

both St. Petersburg and Moscow.
