1 MODERN INTERPRETATIONS OF HISTORIC DESIGNS V DESIGNS FROM THE HASTINGS NEEDLE WORK COMPANY ARTS CHALLENGE 2017 Dakota County Historical Society announces a juried art show based on embroidery designs from the Hastings Needle Work Company. Started in 1888 by Alice and Florence LeDuc, Hastings Needle Work produced unique embroidery pieces for their clients from 1888 to the mid-1920s. Over 1,200 patterns have survived, showing a broad variety of design styles and subjects: florals, dragons, birds, Indian designs, geometrical combinations, and curvilinear designs. The patterns are housed in the collections of the Minnesota Historical Society, the City of Hastings’ Pioneer Room, and the Dakota County Historical Society. To highlight the diversity of designs, 15 of the designs are featured in this packet. More can be found online on dakotahistory.org and at the following link: http://search.mnhs.org/index.php?q=hastings+needlework. Although the designs were originally intended for embroidery, participants are invited to use the artistic media of their choice. The theme for this national show is modern interpretations of historic designs. Entries will be evaluated on quality, creativity and interpretation of the pattern(s), aesthetics and workmanship, and quality of digital image. Acceptance or rejection for display will be based on the scores each piece receives. ENTRIES Entrants may use any media to interpret their chosen designs. This may include but is not limited to: hand or machine embroidery, wool felting, rug hooking, quilting, wood carving, collage, clothing design, beadwork, painting or mixed media. You may use more than one design in your interpretation. The designs may be manipulated, as long as they are easily recognized as deriving from one of the original designs. Each individual is allowed to enter up to six (6) pieces.
